A murphy bed, also known as a wall bed or hide-a-bed, is a functional piece of furniture that can convert any room of your home into a bedroom in an instant.

It is hinged at one end to allow you to store the bed in the wall when it’s not in use.

If you have a small home or apartment, a murphy bed is a great way to utilize the space that you have.

How much does a murphy bed cost?

The cost of a murphy bed will depend on the manufacturer, the size, materials, where you purchase it and if you need it customized.  For most beds that require no customization and can be setup straight out of the box, similar to a computer desk, the costs can range anywhere from as little as $600 to $3,000.

At Costco, for instance, pre-made wall beds range anywhere from as little as $1,000 to more than $2,800. These beds require no professional installation and act as a bookshelf/drawer when not in use.  The beds on Walmart were in the same price range as well.

However, if you were to want a customized murphy bed, built into the wall, for instance, then the costs could range from $3,000 to $10,000, depending on your needs.  When a bed is customized, you will be able to customize/add lighting, shelving, decorative fronts, crown molding, pull-down tables, cabinetry, sofa and/or nightstands.  Adding a simple painted shelf, for example, could cost as little as $250, whereas a wardrobe cabinet made of a cherry veneer could cost upwards of $4,000.

ValetCustom.com, a company located in California that creates customized murphy beds, claims it can create a customized bed starting $2,900, and this price would include delivery, installation and a $750 retail-value mattress.

California Closets, a popular company that manufactures customized murphy beds, charges anywhere from $3,000 for a simple bed to as much as $20,000 for a customized project with extravagant cabinetry, according to the Denver Post.

What are the extra costs?

Due to the size, shipping/delivery fees may apply, depending on the retailer’s policy.

Some murphy beds won’t come with a mattress, and if this was the case, plan on budgeting for a new mattress.  The costs will depend on the size, brand and where it’s purchased.

Tips to know:

A custom wall bed, just like the one in your bedroom, can either come as a twin, queen, king or even as a California king.  These beds, depending on your preferences, can either tilt on its side or vertically.  Beds that tilt on its side are recommended for lower ceilings, whereas a vertical tilt can offer easy access from both sides of the bed.

Many wall beds will sit about 18 inches above the floor, on average, but if customized, it can sit as high as 21 inches, just like a standard bed.

A closed twin murphy bed is 45 ½ inches wide, 81 inches tall and 16 inches deep. When it’s open, it will extend 84 inches out into the room, from the wall to the foot of the bed. A closed full-sized murphy bed cabinet is 59 ½ inches wide, 81 inches tall and 16 inches deep. When it’s open, it will extend 84 inches out into the room, from the wall to the foot of the bed. A closed queen murphy bed cabinet is 65 ½ inches wide, 86 inches tall and 16 inches deep. When it’s open, it extends close to 90 inches out into the room, from the wall to the foot of the bed.

Consider choosing a murphy bed that doesn’t come supplied a mattress.  That way, in the future, when the mattress needs to be replaced, you can swap it for a new one of your choice.
