How Much Does an Echocardiogram Cost?

An echocardiogram, often referred to as an “echo,” is an end-product image generated through a healthcare procedure known as an echocardiography.  With the purpose of producing a graphic outline of the heart’s movement, an echocardiography utilizes the technology in an ultrasound to examine the heart and surrounding cardiovascular system for impairment and malfunctions.

In the course of the procedure, high-frequency sound waves, commonly known as ultrasounds, provide pictures of the heart’s valves and chambers.  The ultrasound images show blood circulation all throughout.

How much does an echocardiogram cost?

Generally, a standard echocardiogram in the United States may cost $800 to $2,500, depending on what’s covered.  Theses are prices for those without any health insurance policy.  For those with a health insurance policy, you will be responsible for your co-pay.  Blue Cross, for example, says you should be prepared to pay $75 to $225 with this insurance plan.

An echocardiogram is frequently combined with a doppler ultrasound and a color doppler to evaluate the blood flow across the heart’s valves.  An echo with a doppler will usually cost $500 to $800 extra.

A transesophageal echocardiogram can cost anywhere from $1,000 to $1,700 and possibly more due to prescriptions used for anesthesia.  This process will be required if the standard echocardiogram doesn’t show enough images of the heart.

A transthoracic echocardiogram will range anywhere from $1,000 to $1,500.

Because this procedure is deemed to be medically necessary, count on your health insurance to cover this policy.  For those who have health insurance, plan on being responsible for the deductibles and co-pays.

iTriageHealth says the average in-network cost is about $414, while the out-of-network cost is $2,305.

Echocardiogram overview

The cost estimates above will include the echocardiography, the generated results, analysis and the final diagnosis by the doctor.  This may differ depending on your situation, however, since all facilities will have its own billing policies.

During the procedure, a clear gel will be placed near the chest and abdomen area.  Using a hand-held device, known as a transducer, will send sound waves from your body to a machine nearby.  Creating a moving image of the heart, the technologist will be able to see the valves, chambers and the pumping action.  The procedure will usually take no longer than five minutes.

This process will be painless and won’t expose you to any radiation.

As stated above, if a doctor isn’t able to view enough images of the heart, he or she will order a transesophageal echocardiogram, which is known as TEE.  During this procedure, a flexible tube will be guided down your throat into your esophagus.  Once inside, it will take pictures of your heart.

If a stress test is required, the hospital may ask you to not eat for several hours before the procedure begins and you will be required to run on a treadmill for a few minutes to measure your heart at its full capacity.

What are the extra costs?

There will be a separate charge for a cardiologist to read your test.  The reading fee is probably anywhere from $200 to $300.  The results of the echocardiogram can be read and evaluated by an expert cardiologist only.  At times, you might be told that you need to pay an additional cost towards a radiologist fee.

A pulmonary function test is around $300 to $500.  A doctor has to read this as well, which is an extra charge.

Medications are often used during some procedures.  For example, during a transesophageal echocardiogram, intravenous injections are given in order to tell the difference between the tissue and blood,  This makes it easier to read the images.

Tips to know

Doctors will order an echocardiogram is they feel your heart murmur is strong or they are finding out your disease is getting worse.

Chances are you will need someone to drive you home after the procedure, so make sure you have this transporation setup ahead of time to avoid additional stress.

How can I save money?

Whether you’re an inpatient or outpatient, the tests are more expensive when you have them done at the hospital rather than at a doctor’s office.  If you get the echocardiogram test done from a hospital, expect to pay at least 20%-30% more.

A hospital located in the finest area of the city is likely to charge more than one located on the outskirts.

If you meet certain income requirements, certain hospitals may be able to work with you.  They can set up financial assistance or even monthly bill plans.

For those who don’t have a health insurance plan, it may be time to consider one.  Websites, such as eHealthInsurance.com, provide great comparison tools to help you find the best insurance policy for your family.

How Much Does an Echocardiogram for a Cat Cost?

Although there are numerous causes of heart murmurs in cats, the most common feline cardiac disease is cardiomyopathy.  This disease affects the heart muscle and, over time, triggers it to enlarge, causing damage and becoming less proficient at pumping blood.  During a physical exam, a veterinarian will listen intently to your cat’s heart with an amplified stethoscope, and he or she will then try to determine the cause of the murmur in order to provide enhanced treatment.

A cardiac ultrasound, known as an echocardiogram, or an “echo,” is needed to exclude progressive heart disease. It quantifies the heart’s wall thickness and determines the chamber sizes.  It can also identify motion to study the heart’s capability to circulate blood. Most cardiac problems in cats can be cured if detected prematurely.

How much does an echocardiogram for a cat cost?

The cost of an ultrasound depends on the veterinarian, the extent of the procedure and whether it is done in a veterinary office or an animal hospital.  On average, a feline cardiac ultrasound can cost $100 to $500.  This won’t include additional x-rays and the office fee.  In all, the total will be about $350 to $600.

TheCatPractice.com says a chest x-ray could cost $250 and the echocardiogram can cost an additional $350.

Echocardiogram for a cat overview

Included in the cost estimates will be the cardiac ultrasound, the generated results, analysis, and a final diagnosis made by the vet.

During this procedure, the vet will be able to examine the cat’s internal organs.  This non-invasive test is commonly used to look into organs such as the heart and reproductive organs.  An echocardiogram is often prescribed when an x-ray may spot something, but the vet can’t look more in depth.   The chest hair may need to be clipped, depending on the hair length.

For most problems, a vet will recommend an x-ray, ultrasound and the echocardiogram.  The x-ray will be able to show the shape, size and position of the heart, while the ultrasound will allow the vet to see inside the heart.  The echocardiogram can’t examine the lungs, but it will be necessary if the ultrasound and/or x-rays show a suspicion of congenital or acquired heart disease.

Sedation won’t be required and is relatively painless for all cats.

It should take 30 to 60 minutes; however, if the heart valves need to be measured, additional time may be needed.

What are the extra costs?

Most regular veterinarians are not that great with the high-tech echocardiogram interpretations.  Therefore, consulting a cardiologist is a sound idea in order to acquire a diagnosis.  Most vets are quite knowledgeable at managing heart cases once they are diagnosed.  Since people have to travel more than a couple of hours for specialty services, having a veterinary cardiologist at your regular vet clinic is an absolute luxury, but it will not come free.

Most veterinarians will complete an x-ray procedure prior to suggesting an ultrasound.  This will be done after completing a physical examination, and these visits will require an additional fee as well. X-rays can start at $150 and go up from there.

How can I save money?

The American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine suggests calling a number of the neighborhood’s local veterinarians and see what they charge.  Most will be happy to offer you a ballpark estimate over the phone.

Request a pre-test consultation. Your cat may not really need an echo after all.  Most vets will use an echocardiogram as a last resort.

Check with the local Humane Society to see what they charge.  What you’re going to find is that local shelters, such as the Humane Society, will often work with those who can’t afford certain tests, sometimes offering a discount.

If you don’t have a pet insurance policy, highly consider getting one.  Most policies are very affordable and can save you thousands.

How Much Does a Stress Test with Echo Cost?

According to statistics, the leading death-causing illness in the United States is heart disease.  The heart’s main function is pumping blood to the lungs and allowing blood to circulate throughout the human body.  Various heart diseases can incapacitate the heart.

With the availability of advanced technology, doctors today can easily do a heart examination and identify the disease simply by listening to the heartbeat and analyzing blood pressure.  This has become feasible by the very comprehensive echo stress test.

The symptoms most heart patients experience may be minimal, and the heart may appear to be normal in an ECG test; this is because different heart diseases are likely to remain cloaked in our heart to surface only when triggered.  For that reason, a more cutting-edge test is essential to comprehend the heart’s current state.  In order to find out if the heart is in good condition, the echo stress test exposes it to stress.  The heart will be conclusively subjected to artificial stress which helps in determining cardiac fitness.

How much does a stress test with echo cost?

On average, without insurance, an echo stress test can cost $750 to $2,500.

Stress test with echo overview

This test will either be performed in a hospital or physician’s office setting.

A physician will perform this test to find out how much stress a heart is able to manage before developing an abnormal heart rhythm.  The most common form will be via an exercise stress test.   During this test, it will help a physician determine how the heart is acting during the test as it allows the doctor to see how the heart is acting during physical stress instead of a resting rate.

The echo stress test is divided into three parts: the resting echo study, the stress test and repeat echo when the heart is beating quickly.  During the resting portion, sticky patches or electrodes will be attached to the shoulder and chest area.  Laying in various positions, the doctor will pay close attention to the wall movement and record/time various cardiac events.  The exercise portion will consist of running on a treadmill, usually starting at a slower speed/incline and increasing as the time goes on.  This test will stop when you meet your heart’s 85 percent target rate, and while on the treadmill, EKG recordings will be made, along with your blood pressure.  Lastly, the echo portion is immediately repeated once the treadmill stops and will be compared side by side via video.

Once the examination is done, your doctor will analyze the reports.  If the scan indicates abnormal echo stress test results, your doctor will discuss the next course of action.  This will depend on the type of heart disease he has discovered.

A consultation generally comes included as well.  This is your opportunity to discuss your options with your doctor.  He or she will explain all the potential problems, limitations and how to improve your lifestyle.

Doctors will recommend this test to help diagnose an artery disease, heart rhythm problem or an arrhythmia.  It can also help treat many heart disorders such as valvular heart disease.

The entire test should take 90 to 120 minutes.

Tips to know

Providence Health and Services noted treadmill tests can be 60 to 80 percent accurate, while an echo test can be up to 90 percent accurate.

The American College of Cardiology notes that stress tests should only be performed on patients who have peripheral artery disease or diabetics older than 40 years old who have an increased risk of coronary artery disease.

Try to avoid heavy meals at least three to five hours before the procedure.  This can become uncomfortable while running.

How can I save money?

Paying for an echo stress test is really only necessary if you are experiencing warning signs for a possible ailment, if you have a family history of heart disease, or if you are getting older or overweight.  It is sensible to take the test just to be safe since it is the best way to track the pain area in the heart.  If you have chest pain or are unable to respire normally, it is better to get yourself tested rather than suffering from a fatal disease. However, you can’t really put a price tag on a risk for a possible heart attack.  If a specialist recommends you take a stress echo test, then you should do it.  The purpose of this test is to determine heart problems that transpire only with bodily activity.   This way, you and your doctor can find a way to lessen if not eliminate your heart attack risk.  When it comes to cardiovascular health, you should be all ears to medical professionals. Most people would agree that avoiding a heart attack is worth virtually any financial expense.  Your doctor will recommend a stress echo test only if you have a suspiciously problematic heart.

How Much Does Rack and Pinion Repair Cost?

The rack and pinion, which is a part of the power steering, may fail after few years of use.  If you sense the steering is not as good as it was before, there may be a leak in the rack and pinion.

Rack and Pinion Steering” (CC BY 2.0) by Ryan Frost

How much does the typical rack and pinion replacement cost?

The price of the repair can be anywhere from $350 to $1,800, depending on the cost of the new rack and pinion, the car’s make/model, and the time spent by the mechanic to do the repair.  With additional repairs added in, such as a tire alignment, the bills can be between $500 and $1,500 for most car owners.

As for the parts, it can range anywhere from $150 to $400, on average.  This can all depend on where it’s purchased and the car’s make and model.

We were able to call a few franchises in our local area (Arizona) and asked them to offer us a ballpark for certain models.  Here’s what we found out they would charge:

Make and ModelCost
Buick Enclave$650 to $1,100
Dodge RAM$450 to $1,100
Ford Explorer$450 to $1,000
Ford Focus$400 to $800
Honda Accord$650 to $1,300
Honda Civic$600 to $1,100
Kia Sedona$450 to $1,000
Toyota Corolla$750 to $1,300
Toyota Sienna$400 to $1,000

Rack and pinion replacement overview

During the repair process, the mechanic will start by making sure the steering column is locked.  This can be done by using a belt to keep it in place.  The front tires will then be removed and the universal joint coupler will be removed.  From there, the power steering lines will be disconnected from the rack, and the tie rod ends, which help keep the rack together, will be removed.  The rack and pinion brushing brackets and assembly will be completely removed and a newer unit will be installed in its place.  Once installed, the power steering fluid will be replaced and the tires will be realigned.

The average job should take two to three hours.

What are the extra costs?

Sway bar and the bushings may have to be replaced and this can be an additional $150 to $200.

Some shops are going to charge additional shop fees and a local sales tax on top of the repair bill.

After a rack and pinion repair has been done, most mechanics will want to perform an alignment.  Some may include the alignment with the bill while others may not.  See: “How much does a wheel alignment cost?”

Like the alignment, a power steering flush may be necessary.  A flush can often start at $50, depending on the mechanic’s pricing policy.  This may or may not be included in the original estimate.

Tips to know:

If you find the steering is jerky or it’s hard to maneuver, there’s a good chance this part has gone bad.  Other symptoms may include a reduced ability to turn or a lot of noise when turning the wheel.  Most drivers are able to feel a difference as they turn in opposite direction.  If you feel any of these symptoms, you will want to get it checked out immediately as you wouldn’t want it to fail when driving.

The problem with replacing the rack and pinion is that the price can get rather high.  If you drive an older car, be sure to analyze the price.  You may find that it’s best to junk the car and proceed to purchase a newer car.

When purchasing a part or using a mechanic, always make sure that the labor and parts come with a limited warranty.  That way, if a problem does arise, you will be able to fix it.

If you’re unsure the rack and pinion caused the problem, you may want to ask the mechanic to show you the part after the job has been performed.  By doing this, you can usually be able to detect the damage rather easily.

How can I save money?

If the problem in the rack and pinion can be resolved without replacing it, you can save money since you will not need to buy a new one.  This is usually only possible if you check the parts regularly and when the leak is found early.

Try to steer clear of the dealerships.  They often will try to tack on tune-ups, oil changes and other unnecessary jobs.  It’s best to talk with at least three certified mechanics in your local area to get the best pricing possible.

Some people often think repairing the rack and pinion can be a cheaper route to go.  This often isn’t the case.  Since rebuilding can take a lot more time and a lot more risk is involved with the seals, mechanics will almost always recommend replacing it.  If they do, it’s probably best to do so.

How Much Does a Rack of Lamb Cost?

A rack of lamb is a special cut of lamb people usually serve for special occasions.  What makes it an extraordinary food is the way it is cut and garnished.  The whole rack will consist six or seven rib chops, and the meat is tender and fine flavored with different herbs and flavor enhancers.  The food presentation really captures the eye of your guests with its bone that serves as a handle for each of the chops.

How much does a rack of lamb cost?

The cost of the rack of lamb depends on the cost of living in your area and, of course, the quality of the meat.   On average, it will cost about $15 to $24 per pound.  The price of the rack of lamb depends on the weight of the pack.  Therefore, a pack may cost you anywhere from $80 to $350.

For example,  Costco offers rack of lamb that is already vacuumed sealed and prepared for around $14 per pound.

Rack of lamb overview

Usually, a rack of lamb with six to eight chops, which is good for 2 to 4 people, weighs three to four pounds.  It will be French roast and ready to broil.  It can also be boned, semi-boned or boneless.  The pack also includes instructions on how to prepare the dish.

Rack of lamb is often found at local wholesale clubs, grocery stores during holidays and even local farmer markets.  The availability will depend on your geographical location.

Most rack of lamb on the market can often be harvest from lambs three to six months old, but this will depend on the distributor.  A good farmer won’t pasture their lambs to prevent parasite infections.  They will also feed them non-GMO grains such as whole oats and/or barley.  All farmers/distributors will be different in how they raise their lambs.

A rack of lamb can be cooked in a variety of ways; however, the most common way is by roasting.  This recipe, along with this one, offers some great ideas for those who want to cook a rack for the first time.

What are the extra costs?

In addition to the meat, vegetables and other garnishes can enhance the look and add royalty to the dish.  These will not be included.  You can buy carrots, parsnips, and potatoes and cut them into long strips; you can also garnish it with red pepper strips and other colorful vegetables.  There are many lamb recipe books on the market that can help you think of ideas.

Some grocery stores or butchers may offer a pre-packaged deal that not only includes the rack of lamb, but it also includes additional items such as the spices and vegetables.  This rack of lamb can then be put into the oven for a quick, easy recipe.

How can I save money?

Buying the rack of lamb in greater quantity can save you money.  Butchers are often more than willing to offer discounts if you buy in bulk.

With any meat, it will go on sale quite often.  Anything less than $10 per pound is often considered a good deal.

How Much Does an Acting Agent Cost?

An acting agent, sometimes referred to as a “talent agent” or even a “booking agent,” is someone who helps an actor find a job in the acting industry.  Other industries, such as film directing or music, can sign the same type of agent.  This agent will generally take a certain percentage of the pay for each job.   The cost of one is going to greatly vary on many factors.

How much does an acting agent cost?

Most acting agents won’t charge a fee upfront.  Instead, they are going to take a percentage of your overall pay for each gig/job.  The average agent fee is going to vary anywhere from 10% to 25%.  For example, if you landed a job for $5,000, the agent may take $500 to $1,250 of that.  Most reputable agents won’t charge any upfront fees.  A good agent should also avoid selling you photos, unnecessary services or for classes.

A child actor agent is going to be comparable to an adult acting agent.  They typically can take up to 25%.  The average is usually around 10%.

Since most agents only take a certain percentage of your pay, it’s essential to research any company that requires an upfront payment.  This is generally the sign of a scam to come.

Acting agent overview

An agent is going to supply you with advice, find auditions for you, set up appointments, help with legal matters and consult with you regarding what’s best for your career.  Keep in mind that many agents only work with actors who are experienced.  Failing to have the proper experience may result in a hard time finding an agent.  Beyond these tasks, your acting agent will also represent you, the actor, as a representative.

Agents should help you find auditions for many different categories such as commercials, TV shows, movies and others.  They generally have connections that most of the general public doesn’t have.

Talent agents, in most states, such as California and New York, must be registered with the state.  Most states will publicize these lists, and if they aren’t on it, they won’t be registered.  Check your local state laws, and if the state requires the agency to be registered, it’s important for it to be registered.

What are the extra costs?

Some auditions the agent sends you to may require an appropriate wardrobe in order to perform the part.  You can usually find this information well ahead of time.

There are classes where agents can show up in groups.  These classes can cost anywhere from a $50 to as much as $500.  During these classes, a potential actor will act out scenes in front of my industry agents that are looking to pick up new clients.

Tips to know:

There are three ways an acting agent is going to be able to find an actor.  These can be either by a recommendation by another person within the entertainment industry, via an interview or even through a photo that was received through the mail.

Press kits are one of the main ways actors are found.  It’s best that some money goes into a press kit to make it look as professional as possible.

Be very wary of “classes” that cost money which “claim” agents will be in the crowd.  These classes can be very expensive and won’t guarantee anything.  Before signing up, it’s best to look for a guarantee of some sort to ensure that these agents will show up.

A good agent will be very picky about who they represent.  If they accept you without asking a lot of questions, they may be more interested in signing people up to push them toward expensive services.

In California, it’s illegal for agents to charge actors money upfront.

How can I save money?

Acting agents generally work with those who are experienced.  Shop around for an agent, and be sure to get the appropriate referrals.  By doing so, you’re going to be able to find one that works for you and doesn’t take the most out of your paycheck.

Consider finding the auditions yourself.  This will allow you to audition; if you get the job, you can keep 100% of your pay.  An article on backstage.com recommends you go this route because it helps you learn the business.

How Much Do Acting Classes Cost?

For those who wish to begin a career in acting, classes may be necessary.  These classes will help you learn the ways of the industry, the different techniques of acting and other skills to help you succeed in your acting career.

How much do acting classes cost?

Paying for a private tutor will cost more than simply taking a class.  If you’re looking for a more intimate approach where you will be the only student in the class, a professional acting coach may charge anywhere from $50 to $250 per hour.  Some may charge more if they have to travel to your home.

Many local community colleges, as well as parks and recreation programs, hold sessions on a weekly basis for a certain time period.  On average, these novice sessions can vary anywhere from $25 to $100 per class or $150 to $500 for the average 8-week session.

In a hot acting city, such as Los Angeles, acting classes are going to be more in demand and readily available.  Average classes in an in-demand city may cost $250 to $650 per month.  This will all depend on the school.  All in all, plan on budgeting at least $250 to $500 per month for a once-per-week class.

For example, the Young Actor’s Studio currently charges around $200 a month for one three-hour class per week.

Actingcareerstartup.com tells us the average acting class can cost $250 to $375 per month.

As for colleges, our table below shows you the top acting colleges, along with the annual tuition fees.  Remember, tuition won’t include any supplies or books.

SchoolAnnual Tuition
Boston University School of Theatre$53,000
California Institute of the Arts$48,000
Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama$54,000
New York University, Tisch School of the Arts$59,000
SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Theatre Arts$5,000 (in state residents)
Syracuse University School of Drama$50,000
The Juilliard School, Drama Division$46,000
University of Minnesota, Department of Theatre Arts & Dance$21,000 (in state)
University of North Carolina School of the Arts$16,000 (in state)

Acting classes overview

Most acting classes will be lead by a professional who has either acted for money or knows a lot about the industry.  He or she will share techniques, advice, and stage-acting scenarios as a class.  Classes can be broken down into sections as shown below.

Some classes may include books, videos, and other materials that are included as part of their tuition.  Your results may vary, so be sure to consult with the school before signing up.

Types of acting classes

Auditioning – This is often a private class where you will be prepped for an upcoming audition.  Since each audition can be unique, this may not work in a group setting.

Body/Movement – Moving is a large part of acting, and this can teach you movements actors may need to learn.

Cold Reading – During this class, students will be handed a piece of paper and as a group, you will read it together.  This will help for those who plan on auditioning in the future since most auditions don’t offer a script ahead of time.

Commercial – Designed for those who want to play the part in a commercial since it will often be different than a television or movie role.  Students will interact with fake products and practice selling.

Improv – A scene will be set and the actors must play the part, similar to the television show, Whose line is it anyway?

On-Camera – These classes will allow you to act out a scene and an acting teacher will offer feedback.

Scene Study – During this class, you may view an acting scene or witness one live.  You will learn certain techniques being used and will also be asked to analyze it.

Vocal – A class designed for those who want to work on Broadway.  This class can help with your vocals and/or breathing strategies.

Voice Over – Voice overs can occur in commercials, animated movies or other projects needing a “voice over.”  These classes can help work with your voice and how it can be portrayed.

What are the extra costs?

Aside from the acting classes, a registration fee may apply.

If there are workshops or field trips, additional fees may apply.

Classroom material, such as study guides, test booklets, and “acting” clothing, may be required to purchase.

How can I save money?

Don’t sign up with the first school that you come across.  Be sure to compare at least three to five different schools.  Websites, such as ActingSchools.com, can help you find a school in your local area.

Consider learning acting techniques on your own.  YouTube, Amazon and many other various resources online can teach you how to act for free.  Most acting auditions won’t require any sort of certification or degree.

Always research the school before signing up with one.  If you think about it, any person can claim they are an “actor.”    It’s best to research the teacher’s credentials to see what they have accomplished in the past.

How Much Does a PADI Certification Cost?

Provided by the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI), this certification can be obtained at any PADI-approved dive center or resort.  Training will feature three phases: Knowledge Development, Confined Water Dives, and Open Water Dives. The certification requires candidates to pass all three levels of tests in order to become certified.

How much does a PADI certification cost?

The PADI certification courses will cost about $250 to $500, and the training will usually last two to four days.  This should include the course and the pool work.  If you were to take the book portion, it could be less than $150; however, you would still have to pay for the pool portion.  The pool portion will all depend on where you go, but it could cost an average of $200.

Private lessons tend to be three to four times the amount mentioned.

According to PADI, the prices for scuba diving certification can vary depending on location, class size, and other factors.

The Scuba Shop, an education center located in Mesa, Arizona, charges $525 for the entire open water course, according to the official website.

PADI certification overview

The tuition costs will cover the tuition, the pool time and classroom time.  Most centers should also include the use of regulators, buoyancy control device, the tanks and weight belts.

Becoming a scuba diver will require you pass all three phases:  the knowledge development, confined water dives and open water dives.  During the knowledge development phase,  you will learn the basic principles such as how to choose the right gear, underwater signals, diving procedures and what to consider when planning your dive.  This phase will be taught using the PADI Open Water Diver Touch™ on your tablet, online with PADI eLearning® or via a paper-based manual.  In the end, you will take a final exam.  During the confined water dives, you will focus on diving and learn the basic skills needed in a confined swimming pool.  Here, you will learn about setting up your gear, how to enter the water, how to get water out of your mask, buoyancy control, safety and basic navigation.  Once comfortable, you will go on to your final phase, the open water dive.  Your last phase, the open water dive, will be in the open water.  Here, your instructor will make you perform four dives, usually over a two to three day period.  You will get the explore the underwater work and apply all the skills you learned in your first two phases.

All courses will be flexible and will work on your own schedule, but if you’re aggressive enough, you can be certified within four to five days.

Once certified, your certification won’t expire.  However, it is recommended you take scuba review classes occasionally.

What are the extra costs?

Additional scuba gear

You need to purchase personal scuba gear such as the mask, snorkel, wetsuit and fins. You can rent from the PADI center or you may buy your own.  Scuba gear can cost up to $1,500, and this will include everything from the goggles to the wetsuit.  This price can vary, though, depending on which items you purchase.  You can spend as little or as much as you want.  Before you start your sessions, you will be asked to have the following:  a mask, snorkel, fins, underwater compass, whistle and octopus container.  For the open water dives, you will need a wetsuit, regulator with computer, buoyancy compensator, a hood, gloves and two tanks.  All centers will vary, however.  Before the class starts, they should be able to provide you with a checklist.  Refer to the picture below to see what most schools will recommend.

Rental tanks

If you are on a tight budget, you don’t have to go to the beach to dive. Rental tanks can cost $10 to $22.

Additional study materials (depends on the school)

Before signing up, know about any other additional costs.  This can include study materials, boat fees and certification fees.

Tips to know:

Make sure you’re healthy enough to dive.  Read this medical statement, and if you feel you can’t perform any of these activities, the training may not be worth it.  If you do check yes on any options and want to proceed, you must get clearance from your doctor.

The minimum age to dive is 10 years old.  Students, who are younger than 15, will earn the PADI Junior Open Water Diver certification.  Upon reaching 15, they will be able to upgrade.

In order to go into the open water, you must be able to swim at least 200 meters nonstop or 300 meters with all your gear on.  You must also be able to tread water for 10  minutes.

Use the official PADI search to find a qualified dive shop in your area.

How deep can you scuba dive?   The limit is about 130 feet; however, while training, you won’t go deeper than 40 feet.

How can I save money?

Training packages from different PADI centers may vary due to some factors.  Be sure to find the best value while keeping your training level in mind.  To save money, you may consider fewer training days since these days may have smaller fees.

Instead of renting or buying the scuba diving gear needed, consider borrowing from someone you know who also dives.

Before committing to thousands of dollars worth of equipment, rent or buy the basics first to make sure you’re interested.  Many people find after three to four dives that it isn’t something worth pursuing.

Look for sites that offer discounts for early booking and reservations.  Many websites are going to allow students to register on their website.

If you live in a busy area, consider talking with a handful of instructors.  While many will list the prices on the website, many don’t.  Be sure to talk with at least three instructors to ensure you’re getting the best price possible.

Some centers may offer discounts to groups and government/military officials.

If an older violin has broken down, don’t get it repaired just yet.  You may find that it’s cheaper to invest in a new one rather than fix the one that you have now.

A used violin can often sound better than a new.  Many teachers have stated that a used violin will often be “broken”  or “played” in.  As they are played, they do start to sound a lot better.  If purchasing used, though, just make sure that you’re buying from a reputable dealer.

Local violin shops are more than happy to discuss potential violin purchases.  Bring them in a picture or a potential description of a used violin you’re looking to buy.  For a small fee, they will be more than happy to discuss the value and if it’s worth the investment.

What is the difference between a violin and a fiddle?

This is a popular question that often arises online.  While the answer may be nothing.  A fiddle is typically played with folk/traditional genres, while a violin play composition-based genres.  There are some differences, however.  The name “fiddle” and “violin” refer to the non-changeable parts of the instrument, and many fiddlers will prefer a different setup to a violin.  This setup may include the strings, tuners and the bridge.  Another difference may be the strings.  While five-string fiddles do exist, there are others with different arrangements on the market; however, your standard fiddle will have four strings.  All in all, a fiddle is a nickname for a violin.

Shopping for a violin:

Examine the violin before purchasing.  Since the body is made of wood, it’s important to see how it’s been affected by the environment.  Check for cracks or water damage.  It’s also important to inspect the wood for any type of curling.

Try to find a reputable music shop that will help you with a setup.  Many shops will just rely on a warehouse to help with this.  This is something that you would want to avoid.

There are many ways to purchase a violin.  A local music shop, website or mail order company can all offer a great selection.  When choosing one, try to test it out in person.  Also, it doesn’t hurt to consider a purchase in person.  That way, you can ask questions and have a contact just in case something happens in the future.

How can I save money?

Used violins can be purchased through Amazon or your local music store.  Be careful of the condition when purchasing these since sometimes, buying a used violin could more expensive than simply buying a new one.  By purchasing used, you can save up to 50 percent.  Remember, purchasing a used violin can be a good thing.

If you are unsure about you or your child’s commitment to playing the violin, one can be rented while learning how to play.  Rentals will usually just require a monthly commitment.  If you plan on renting, try to find a program that allows you to place a portion of your money toward an initial purchase in the long run.

Don’t spend too little on a violin.  Experts will tell you that any violin under $200 usually isn’t worth the purchase.

The average life expectancy for a Dalmatian is 10 to 12 years.

As for the dalmatian temperament, owners describe their dogs as independent, dominant and intelligent.  Because of this, this breed isn’t recommended for first-time dog owners.

Dalmatian dogs are known to be rather active, and because of this, they are going to require a lot of physical exercises.  This dog won’t be ideal for a smaller setting such as an apartment.  While it is active, it won’t be hyper when compared to other breeds.  Originally, this breed was designed to run close to 25 miles per day with a horse and carriage, and this trait has stuck with them ever since.  If they don’t receive adequate exercise, they can get quite destructive if they become too bored.

Since a dalmatian tends to stay in the puppy stage longer, it’s best to start obedience classes as soon as possible.  Most experts will also recommend that chew toys are handed out early as well to sway them from chewing on items such as furniture and shoes.

This breed is susceptible to illnesses such as kidney disorders, epilepsy, allergies and deafness.

Are dalmatians deaf?  This is a question you may see arise.  While more than 70 percent can hear just fine, deafness is a serious problem for this breed as the remaining 30 percent can’t hear or are hard of hearing.  They are inflicted with this problem due to spotted pattern and breeding can lead to a lack of mature melanocytes.  Dogs with larger patches tend to have healthier hearing abilities.

Try checking several rescue shelters.  Shelter adoption fees can be less than $100, and 99 percent of the time, the first set of vaccinations should be included.  Most should be spayed or neutered as well.
