How much does dog grooming cost?

Most grooming services offer two basic types: a full-service groom and bath-only groom.  Bath-only grooms may be about 25% cheaper than the prices listed below.

The cost of grooming a small dog breed, such as the Bichon Frise and Maltese, will be between $25-$50.

The cost of grooming a medium dog breed, such as the Labrador Retriever or Chow, will be $50-$70.

The cost of grooming a large breed, such as the poodle or Briard, or a long-haired medium breed, will cost $70-$100.

For example, Hollywood Pet Wash, a professional dog groomer located in Hollywood, California, has prices that range anywhere from $35 to as much as $125.  Small dogs with a cut will cost $45 to $50, while a large dog will cost $65 to $125 with a cut.

Mobile grooming services that come directly to your residence or place of work can cost a little more due to the transportation that they provide.  A mobile service can cost anywhere from $75 to $200.  Again, this can depend on the breed of dog.

According to a member on this ProDogGroomingSupplies.com forum thread, members claimed that they paid anywhere from $20 to $50 for their dog.  The prices greatly vary depending on the dog’s size and the groomer.

Angie’s List members reported paying an average of $53 in 2014.

Dog grooming overview

A bath-only grooming service will usually include brushing out the dog’s coat for around 15 minutes, giving the dog a bath, blow drying the dog’s coat, and cleaning the dog’s ears.  Most groomers also include a ribbon or bandana for looks and possibly some fragrance.

A full-service groom should include all of the services a bath-only groom includes as well as cutting and/or styling the dog’s hair and clipping the dog’s nails.

Some grooming service includes checking the anal glands; others charge extra for this service.

The average grooming session shouldn’t take any longer than 15 to 30 minutes.

Grooming services can be found with private providers and larger pet chains such as PETCO and PetSmart.

What are the extra costs?

Clipping the nails, in addition to a bath-only groom will cost between $7-$15 extra.  If you just need their nails cut, most groomers can do this for you.

Using a medicated shampoo or shampoo specializing in killing fleas will usually cost about $10 extra.

Having your dog’s teeth cleaned at a groomer’s, while not as extensive as the teeth cleaning done by a veterinarian, will cost about $10-$20 more.  See: “How much does dog teeth cleaning cost?

Mobile groomers charge a service fee in addition to the grooming fee.  This is usually $15-$25.

If the dog’s hair is matted or knotted, making it harder for the groomer to perform the job, the cost can range anywhere from $5 to $30 extra.

Customized cuts, such as a mohawk or poodle feet, can cost an extra $5 to $25 depending on the style and dog size.

Dog grooming services can perform other services such as anal gland expression, de-skunking, ear cleaning, tick removal and more.

If a dog isn’t up to date on vaccinations, these will be required before a dog is groomed through a professional.  Vaccines can greatly vary depending on what kind of vaccines they need.

Adding a flea dip can be an additional $5 to $8.

While optional, a tip is appreciated.  This can be $5 to $10, depending on how much you want to pay.

Tips to know:

If taking your dog to the groomer, be sure to consider an ear cleaning.  These cleanings can help prevent fungus, waxy ears and mites.

Consider the weather when grooming your dog.  If the weather is going to be cooler in the upcoming months, it may be ideal to keep a thicker coat.  Most groomers will be able to recommend what they deem necessary.

Make it a habit to groom your dog’s coat once a week.  Since most pet owners only take their animals in once a month, combing will help prevent matting and knot build-up.

When starting up grooming, try your best to keep a regular schedule.  It’s always best to bring your dog into a groomer when it has been walked around the block, ensuring that the dog is calm.

Make sure that your dog’s vaccinations are up to date.  Many reputable groomers won’t see your dog if they don’t have the proper vaccinations.

Factors that influence the price:

The Size

The size of the dog will greatly influence the price of a grooming session.

Condition

Dogs that tend to go to a groomer less will be charged more.  This can be due to the fact that their coats are thicker or the mat under their coat.

Behavior

An aggressive dog tends to cost more than one that is mellow.   Most groomers don’t want to sedate a dog.   Instead, they may not cater to your dog.

How can I save money?

Most grooming shops have some type of loyal customer rewards, such as a free groom after purchasing so many full-service grooms.

Some grooming services have customer referral programs which allow you discounts for every customer you refer to them.

At-home dog grooming can save you money in the long run, but in order to do a good job, you have to have the right tools.  Professional dog clippers, such as the Oster 78004-011, will cost between $40-$150 depending on the features and brand.  Nail clippers come in many different varieties, such as clippers or grinders, and can cost anywhere from $5-$35.  For example, a basic hand-held clipper for nails by Conair will cost $6, while a nail grinder from Oster will cost about $30.  A professional dog brush can cost between $6 and $50 depending on the style, brand, and size.  A normal handheld dog brush from Safari will cost about $13, while a brush like the FURminator will cost $25-$50.

How Much Does a Snow Blower Cost?

Snow blowers, also called snow throwers, can make the winter months much easier.  Shoveling can be strenuous and time-consuming; however, using a gas or electric snow blower can make the job of snow removal much easier.

How much does a snow blower cost?

Snow blowers come in a great variety of sizes, horsepowers, and stages.  Therefore, the price range is quite large.  Snow blowers can cost anywhere from $200 to $1000.  For example, the Greenworks 26032 is a lower-end electric snow blower that is 20 inches wide and will cost about $200.

The Murray 1695537 is gas powered, wider, and will cost around $400.  It is a single-stage snow blower, meaning that it only has one set of blades, that it can clear snow up to one foot in depth, that it provides some momentum but will need to be pushed, and that it cannot be used on gravel or rough surfaces – only smooth paved driveways.

A two-stage snow blower has two sets of blades – one that cuts through the ice and hard snow and one that is smooth to pick up and throw the snow up the chute.  These types of snow blowers do not make any direct contact with the ground and can, therefore, be used on any type of surface.  A two-stage snow blower is usually capable of going in forward and reverse, and can usually clear snow up to almost three feet in depth.  An example of this type of snow blower is the Powerland PDST-32, which will cost about $900.

An electric snow blower will require an outlet as well as an extension cord.  An electric snow blower can cost anywhere from $85 to $600.  The wider the blower is, the more it will cost.

A two-stage snow blower that runs on gasoline can cost anywhere from $299 to $1,400 depending on the brand and size.

BrandPrice Range (from 24 inch  to 33 inch width path)
Ariens$649 to $2,500
Bolens$179 to  $1,200
Craftsman$500 to $1,000
Cub Cadet$700 to $1,800
Honda$600 to $2,500
Husqvarna$800 to $2,000
Simplicity$500 to $2,500
Snow Joe Electric$65 to $300
Toro$400 to $1,500
Troy Bilt$900 to $2,200
Yard Machine$400 to $900

What is going to be included in the estimates above?

All of the batteries, cords, and blades needed to run the machine will be included.

All snow blowers will come with an owner’s manual.

Most snow blowers come with some type of warranty – this depends on the company.

Popular features

An electric starter allows you to plug in your snow blower to start the engine during colder weather.

The intake height may be able to be adjusted to determine how much snow it can take in.

A single-hand operation allows you to make easier adjustments.

The speed controls let you set the machine pace.

Power steering, similar to a car, allows you to turn the snow blower with ease.

Larger tires may offer better traction when maneuvering.  Some may even have dual tires for a better grip.

A remote control chute lets you change the direction of the chute.  A joystick chute, on the other hand, will be manually controlled.

An extended chute allows you to reduce the blowback of snow.

A headlight may be available for visibility at night.

Heated handgrips will warm your hands to make the work more comfortable.

What are the extra costs?

The blades on snow blowers will need to be replaced every few years.  This will cost between $10 and $50 depending on the size and stage of your blower.

Electric snow blowers will need a replacement battery every few years.  These batteries usually cost $30 to $50.

Electric snow blowers are going to require a heavy-duty, outdoor extension cord.  It’s recommended that cords longer than 50 to 100 feet are purchased.  These cords can start at $15.

If using a gas blower or a blower that is powerful and loud, it’s ideal to purchase ear protection to drown out the sound.

Gas blowers will need an oil change every 50 hours of use, and spark plugs will be needed after every 100 hours of use.  Frequently purchased together, this should cost about $25.

When prepping the snow blower for the season, it’s best to use a fuel stabilizer to store it for the off-season.  These stabilizers can cost about $10.

Sheer pins may be needed if you need to replace and/or break one.  These pins can cost about $5 to $10.  According to snowblowersdirect.com, plan on spending about $72.39 per year to maintain your snow blower.

Tips to know:

Always wear tight-fitting clothing when using a snow blower.  Loose fitting clothing has a better chance of getting caught in the blades.

Always wait for the unit to cool down before filling up with gas.  Also, before cleaning it, always wait for it to cool as well.

Don’t purchase a snow blower that is too big.  It’s ideal to purchase a two-stage blower for those that have a driveway wider than 25″.  For an electric blower, consider it for smaller sidewalks and spaces that receive lighter, fluffier snow.

Measure the width of your driveway and make sure you choose the right size.

If you need to use this snow blower on steep terrains, be sure it’s built for this rugged terrain.

Wet and heavy snow can often clog the snow blower’s chutes.  If you live in an area prone to this, it’s ideal to look for a heavyweight blower that can handle this type of situation.

Cold weather can often make your snow blower hard to start and to prevent this, it’s a good idea to purchase a snow blower that allows you to plug the starter into the wall.

Types of snow blowers:

Electric Unit

These units are lightweight, portable and very easy to use.  These units are designed for smaller driveways and spaces,  ideal for a driveway less than 35 feet.  Requiring an outlet, an electric can work on just about any surface besides gravel.

Gas Unit

Powered on gas, these units are more powerful and ideal for larger driveways, longer than 40 feet.  A gas unit is perfect for just about any snowfall range.

Single-Stage

Ideal for up to 12 inches deep and can clear paths up to 22 inches wide.  This unit shouldn’t be used on gravel surfaces.

Two-Stage

One of the biggest units available, a two-stage gas unit is powerful, can clear big paths, easy to start up.  This unit is ideal for larger commercial spaces and for snowfalls that receive more than 12 inches of hard, compact snow.  This type of setup will need a gas and oil combination to start it.

Three-Stage

Ideal for heavy snow and can clear snow up to three feet deep.  Most models can throw snow up to 50 feet and can handle heavier snow and ice.

Cordless

Ideal for lighter snow up to 12 inches.  It is lighter in weight and is known to be more environmentally friendly.

How Much Does a Blood Pressure Monitor Cost?

According to TheBloodPressureCenter.com, a website which provides information and reviews on many different types and brands of blood pressure monitors, “high blood pressure is a major problem today and the biggest difficulty with this serious and often life-threatening condition is that it rarely displays any symptoms at all.”  People who have been diagnosed with chronic high blood pressure must regulate this blood pressure on a daily basis.  For this reason, at-home monitoring machines are available.

How much does a blood pressure monitor cost?

Blood pressure monitors that are manual, meaning that they have a pressure dial that you read while hand-pumping the monitor, can cost anywhere from $20-$50.  For example, LifeSource sells a manual blood pressure monitor for $22.

Blood pressure monitors that are automatic can cost between $40-$100 depending on the features of the machine.  An automatic blood pressure monitor regulates the pressure itself and then displays the results on a digital screen.  Some machines can even store your past results for future reference.  Others are capable of connecting to your computer for printouts and updates.  The Omrom HEM-780 is a great example of an automatic blood pressure monitor.

Some blood pressure monitors can be used around your wrist rather than a cuff around your upper arm.  These types of monitors will cost $20-$70 depending on the brand and features.  Most wrist monitors have an automatic display;  however;  they are not always as accurate as the upper-arm monitors.  An example of a wrist monitor is shown in the Oregon Scientific Talking Monitor which can be purchased for about $45.

Besides the wrist, other blood pressure monitors can also be used via your finger.  A finger blood pressure monitor can cost anywhere from $20 to $75.   Advanced blood pressure monitors that are cuffless can cost upwards of $150.

These monitors can be purchased at just about any local pharmacy or medical equipment retailer.  You won’t need a prescription to purchase one.

All blood pressure monitors will come with instructions for use and interpretation of results.

Most companies offer a warranty with the monitor, usually three to five years.

What are the extra costs?

Most automatic monitors will need a battery replacement.  The cost and frequency depends on the type of battery and how often the monitor gets used.

If you need a child-sized cuff or a larger adult cuff, this can cost an additional $5-$20.

According to heart.org, choose a monitor that has been tested, validated and approved by the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation, the British Hypertension Society and the International Protocol for the Validation of Automated BP Measuring Devices.

Tips to know:

Find a quiet place to take your blood pressure.  This will allow you to hear your heartbeat.

Always make sure that you’re in a relaxed and quiet state.  Also, make sure that you have an empty bladder.  Believe it or not but a full bladder can affect the reading.

Try to wrap the blood pressure monitor directly against the skin.  If there is any clothing in the way, you’ll want to set it aside.

Always sit up straight.  If you have to, be sure to breathe and relax for a few minutes before having your pressure checked.

Try to test it for accuracy before using it.  This can often be done at the local doctor’s office or validated through the manufacturer.

According to doctors, you should be able to place one finger inside the cuff when it’s deflated.  Refer to the packaging to see the size guidelines.

How can I save money?

Used blood pressure monitors can be found through services such as Amazon and eBay.

Consumersearch.com provides reviews and suggestions for your blood pressure monitor needs.

If you’re just curious on what your blood pressure is currently at, most pharmacies have blood pressure monitors right in their lobbies.  Consider using one of these systems to get a reading.  If there are ever any questions, be sure to consult with a professional doctor.

How Much Does It Cost To Send A Package?

Sending packages in the mail, especially during the busy holiday season, can add quite a bit of cost to your expenses.   There are ways to save money, however, and there are many different companies that offer shipping services.

How much does it cost to send a package?

Sending a basic letter or card in the mail will only require one stamp, which costs $0.47.  This price is for letters and cards which weigh up to one ounce.  For every ounce after that, the cost will increase by $0.17.  If you choose to send your card or letter in a larger mailing envelope, it will require two stamps for a total amount of $0.88.  Stamps can be bought in books of twenty or rolls of 100, but there is no discount for buying in bulk;  each stamp will cost $0.47 regardless of how many you purchase.

If you need to send a package, such as a movie or a box of clothes, there are many options.  The United States Postal Service offers the Flat Rate option.  This is a service that allows you to choose a specific size and shape of a box or mailing envelope and then charges one flat rate to ship regardless of the contents of the box.  The supplies for this type of shipping can cost anywhere from $2 to $10, and the shipping itself can cost from $5 to $30 depending on the distance it is being shipped, the weight of the package, and whether you choose Express (usually overnight) or Priority mail (2-8 days).  Shipping with the same flat rate boxes internationally will cost between $25-$50.  The cheapest option through the USPS, however, is via media mail.  This is only available for those who are shipping books, media-CDs, DVDs and videotapes.  Restrictions will apply.

UPS offers other options in shipping such as NextDay Air, 2ndDay Air, and UPS Ground.  These services start at about $8 and increase to about $90 depending on the service selected, the size and shape of the package, and the distance it is to be delivered.

Federal Express offers many different shipping options with time-specific delivery.  For example, First Overnight will be delivered the next day by 8 or 8:30 am.  The cost for this service begins at $46.30 for a 1 pound package delivered up to 150 miles away.  The price increases by $4-$7 per 150-mile delivery increase and increases by $5-$6 per additional pound.  Priority Overnight, which will be delivered by 10:30 am the next day, will start at $21 for one pound within 150 miles; Standard Overnight will be delivered by 3:00 the next day and starts at $18;  2nd Day shipping will start at $12, and Express Saver will start at $10.50.  Each of these will gradually increase as the distance and weight increases, although the increase will not be as large as it is with First Overnight.

What are the extra costs?

If the packaging supplies are not included, you will need to purchase a box or envelope, tape, bubble wrap, etc.

If you are shipping something very valuable, you are allowed to purchase insurance on the package itself.  The price of this varies depending on the contents of the package and whether you want insurance against damage, loss, or both.

Tips to know

All shipping services allow you to track the progress of your delivery online with a package tracking number.  This service is not available with regular mail.

Most delivery services come with a complimentary delivery notification.

Shipping companies allow you the option of printing off your shipping labels and arranging for free pick up at your home.

How can I save money?

The best way to save money on shipping is to plan ahead and ship your package early.  The longer you wait, the more expensive it will be.

Using your own boxes and supplies can save you money;  however, most shipping companies have requirements on what types of boxes can be used as well as restrictions regarding any writing on the box.  Avoid buying boxes from the shippers as this can often be the most expensive option.

If you are going to be shipping multiple packages on a regular basis, each company has some type of loyal customer or frequent user plan that can save you money.

Compare the big three shipping companies:  UPS, USPS and FedEx.

Through USPS, the cheapest option will be via standard post.  This option can take up to eight days for delivery, but it is a good option if you’re not in a hurry.  According to this CSMonitor.com study, they listed some scenarios and the Postal Service undercut its competitors every time.

How Much Do College Textbooks Cost?

Whether purchasing books for college courses, the cost of text books can really add up.  Each class usually requires at least one text book, sometimes two or three.  Being purchased every semester, this means that the cost of textbooks could be an issue at least twice, maybe even four times per year.

How much do college textbooks cost?

The total cost of a textbook at the college level is usually between $30 and $240.  This price depends on the curriculum, your school and the exact textbook.

According to the National Association of College Stores, the average college textbook was $57 for the academic year in 2010.

If you want to get an idea what a book may cost for your particular subject, use the UniversitySupplyStore.com to browse courses and prices.

For example, the curriculum available through McGraw-Hill, a popular curriculum for regular high school classes as well as AP classes, runs between $60 and $100 for a classroom text book.  Their Geometry book is $75.

Another curriculum, such as A Beka Book, is specifically designed for Christian education and can be much cheaper.  For example, their Grammar book is only $15.

The total cost of books at a college level will usually be much higher.  Depending on the number of credits, the price can vary from $200-$1000 per semester.  According to CollegeBoard.com, the national average for college textbooks is $1,137 per year.

most-expensive-textbooks

What are the extra costs?

Many classes require a workbook or lab manual in addition to the actual textbook.  These books are usually cheaper, smaller, and more flimsy.  The reason for this is that they are meant for the student to write in and are not meant to be used by more than one person.  These workbooks and lab manuals are usually around $15-$50.

Optional study guides may be required outside of the book.  These are guides that allow the student to write in them as the classes go on.

Some classes will need some type of computer program to complete as well.  For example, a class on Microsoft Office will require that the student has a computer which runs MS office programs.  This software is usually extra, but can also be purchased at a discount if it is for a class.

Other textbooks may require additional learning material that is used online.  This material can be viewed using a special log-in code.

Tips to know:

Check with your professor or college bookstore to find out what book you’re going to need for your class.  Once you find out what book you’re going to need, always make sure that you check with at least three different comparison sites.  It’s best to get the ISBN to ensure that you have the exact book.

Shop early, and be sure to shop online.  99% of the time, the book is going to be the cheapest online.  If possible, try to buy used.

Why are textbooks so expensive?

Nearly 50% of the costs will go to the publisher and the school bookstore.

New editions are always being released, driving up the prices.  Recent reports showed these new editions were unnecessary.

Publishers will often include CD-ROMs and study guides, driving up the price.

How can I save money?

The best way to save money on textbooks at the high school and college level is simply by buying each textbook used.  It is very important, however, that you match the exact ISBN of the required textbook so that you get the correct version, especially since each textbook has many different issues and volumes.

Used textbooks can be purchased through sites such as Amazon.com and AbeBooks.com.  These websites offer discounts of 20%-80% off original prices;  these new prices will be determined by the demand for the book as well as the condition of the book.  Your bookstore on the college campus may have used books available as well.

eBook versions are becoming more and more popular these days and can cost significantly less.  These books can be viewed on eBook readers such as the Kindle, Nook, etc.

Sometimes you may find that renting a book can be a lot cheaper than actually buying the book.    Popular book renter websites such as BookRenter.com can help you save up to 70%+

Financial aid, grants and loans can help pay for textbooks.

Check with your local school library to see if you can rent the book for free.  Many universities have multiple textbooks available.

Talk with your college professor ahead of time to see if an older version may work.  It’s also a good idea to see how much the book will be used.  Sometimes, these books are recommended by the college and won’t be used much in the classroom.

Don’t forget to look for scholarships.  Many scholarships out there are focused on books and may be able to help.

How Much Do Baby Clothes Cost?

Baby clothes come in a wide variety of styles and sizes.  Most of the time, you will want to purchase a size larger than you baby’s current size so that you can get more use out of each outfit.  Each brand tends to fit differently, so it is best to experiment with a few things before you purchase a large amount of clothing.  Most brands of baby clothing come in sizes by month until the child is 24 months.  After that, sizes begin to be labeled as 2T or 3T and can become more expensive.

For example, a summer outfit with shorts and a tee shirt will cost about $8 and a winter outfit of pants and a long-sleeved tee shirt or a sweatshirt will cost about $16 at a local Target.

One article of clothing that every baby will use a lot is a onesie.  Onesies are great to put under outfits to give the baby a little extra warmth and comfort.  Onesies come in a variety of sizes and colors and can be found in short or long sleeve.  Onesies are usually sold in packages which contain three to five onesies.  These packages will cost between $5-$20 depending on the brand and the style.

Tips to know:

Make sure that you purchase clothes that are comfortable for your baby.  Consider a pair that is easy to put on.  Remember that you’re going to have to change diapers constantly throughout the day.

If your baby is outgrowing clothes, such as a one-piece pajama suit, consider cutting the feet off to extend the longevity of the clothes.  With pants, consider cutting them down to turn them into something such as shorts.

Try to avoid the size 3 to 6 months stage as newborns can outgrow these stages rather fast.

What are the extra costs?

Although shoes aren’t really necessary before a baby can walk, sometimes people choose to have their babies wear shoes for looks.  Most outfits purchased do not include these, and shoes will cost about $15-$50 depending on the brand and style.

Socks are important for babies to keep warm  A package of socks can usually be found for $5 or less.

How can I save money?

There are many people, especially those with only one child, who take good care of their clothing and then decide to sell it when their kids are too big to wear it.  Used baby clothes can be found at local garage sales, mom-to-mom sales, and even at websites such as eBay.

Most children’s stores, such as The Children’s Place, offer programs for loyal customers to receive discounts and coupons as a reward for shopping at their store.

If purchasing online or even in store, consider buying heavily discounted gift cards at Raise.com.

Marriage license overview

To receive a marriage license, applicants will need to bring their IDs, the necessary paperwork, fees, and in some states, a blood test.  This will vary from state to state.  Once you apply for the license, it will either be mailed or can be picked up at the local courthouse, and depending on the state, there may be a waiting period.  From there, you will be married legally by someone in your state and you must have two witnesses sign the license.  Once this is complete, it will be returned to the county clerk’s office and it will be filed.  A few weeks later, you will be able to purchase the certificate from the clerk’s office.

A legal copy of a marriage certificate will generally include the bride and groom’s full names; location and date of the wedding; pastor or official; and the state’s seal.  This seal is usually raised or has some type of security measures to ensure no illegal copies are made.

A keepsake copy of the marriage license can include any information the bride and groom desire, as well as any religious symbols requested.

What are the extra costs?

Ordering marriage certificates online, while convenient, is usually more expensive.  Most services, such as VitalCheck.com, charge a processing fee as well as shipping and handling.
If the marriage certificate is needed in less time than it normally takes, an express fee may be charged (depends on the state).

Most counties will only issue one to two certificates.  If you need more than one certificate, you’re going to find that each additional copy is going to vary.  This certificate can cost anywhere from $5 to $20.

Tips to know:

Be sure to know more about your state’s waiting period.  Most states are going to have a waiting period before a certificate is issued.

Some states are going to require some sort of medical records such as a physical exam.  Other states may also require blood work.

When applying for the certification, it’s important that both bride and groom are present so that the appropriate papers can be signed.

Each state is going to vary with its laws.  Some states may require blood work while others may allow same sex marriages, etc.

Which states require a blood test for a marriage license?

Only a few states require a blood test and a physical exam.  The states that do require a blood test includes the District of Columbia, Mississippi and Montana.

How can I save money?

The best way to save money is to be organized: Applying for your marriage license in a timely manner, as well as in person rather than online, will save you unnecessary fees.

Some states offer discounts to those that take counseling courses ahead of time.  These classes can last up to 12 hours.

How Much Do Pregnancy Tests Cost?

According to WebMD, “Home pregnancy tests can find the presence of a pregnancy hormone (called human chorionic gonadotropin, or hCG) in a sample of urine. High levels of hCG are made during pregnancy, and the home tests have similar results to the pregnancy tests done in most doctor offices if they are used exactly as instructed.”  Home pregnancy tests are usually the first choice for women who think they may be pregnant.  If the home pregnancy test suggests pregnancy, consult your doctor immediately for proper prenatal care.

How much do pregnancy tests cost?

The cost of a pregnancy test will depend on the type, if it’s done at home, the brand and where it’s purchased.  A simple over-the-counter urine test strip can cost $1 to $15, but if a blood test is performed at a local doctor’s office, the costs can $50 to $200 for the test alone, and this won’t include the doctor’s visit.

According to VeryWell.com, an online lab will charge $49 for a pregnancy blood test.

TypePrice Range
Blood Pregnancy Test$50 to $200 (not including doctor bill)
Clearblue Pregnancy Test$7 to $15 (2 pack)
Early Response Pregnancy Test$6 to $12 (2 pack)
EPT Pregnancy Test$7 to $14 (2 pack)
First Response Pregnancy Test$9 to $12 (2 pack)
Planned Parenthood Pregnancy Test$0 to $50+ (based on income sliding scale; includes visit)

Pregnancy test overview

Test strips will come with instructions for use and possibly a cup for urine collection.  Be sure to read the directions to ensure you’re getting accurate results.  Most of the time, you will take the test four days before your period and you will have to pee on a stick for about five seconds.  Two lines will mean pregnant, while one line means you’re not.  Digital tests, on the other hand, will either say “pregnant” or “not pregnant.”

A home pregnancy test will work by measuring the hCG in your urine.  Once you conceive, it can take up to 14 days for hCG to show up.  If any levels are present, the test will detect it and show a positive result.

A blood test will give the specific hCG levels in your blood.  These blood results can offer your doctor a way to track your number and get a better read on your pregnancy.  These tests can help monitor miscarriages or even multiples.

If you’re not planning on taking a pregnancy test at the local doctor’s office, it can be found at local drug, grocery stores or in bulk with retailers such as Amazon.com.

What are the extra costs?

Some pregnancy tests are sold in combination packs with ovulation tests.  These tests help women determine when is the best time to try to get pregnant.  Combination packs will be more expensive but can be useful if you are trying to get pregnant.

If you’re finding that the at home tests aren’t working well, a doctor’s test may be required in order to get an accurate result.  Heading to the doctor’s office will result in an office exam and test fee that can start at $75 without insurance.

Tips to know:

Always take your pregnancy test first thing the morning.  Make sure that it’s the first time you’re going to the bathroom for the day.  The reason you’ll want to do this is because you’ll have the high hCG levels, which detect your pregnancy.

Each pregnancy test is going to greatly vary.  What you’re going to want to make sure you do is read the directions on the back of the label as they are all going to greatly vary.

The more accurate test you can receive is a pregnancy test at your local doctor’s office.

If you ever have any questions in regards to the pregnancy test, always make sure that you call the number on the back of the box to get the appropriate answers.

Taking medication, such as some fertility drugs, may affect the test.

How soon after conception can I test?  Most packages claim  you can take the test three to four days before your period was due; however, most experts recommend you take the test one week after your period was supposed to start.

How accurate are home pregnancy tests?

According to the Mayo Clinic, most tests claim to be 99 percent accurate; however, some studies state that some tests may not be sensitive enough to diagnose pregnancy who nearly missed their period.  The Mayo Clinic recommends you wait at least one week after your last period before taking the test.

What can cause a false positive pregnancy test?

One of the most common reasons is due to using the test improperly.  Failing to abide by the directions can lead to false positives.

Failing to read the test within the timeframe specified in the directions can show false positive results.  Over time, it’s not unusual for the lines to appear as evaporation occurs.  As long as you read the results during the proper time frame, there shouldn’t be an issue.

If the test is expired, it can often yield false results.

Testing too early can lead to a “chemical pregnancy.”  Fertility experts note that up to 70 percent of conceptions can end in a miscarriage and most don’t even realize it because it happens early in the conception phase.  While it may be tempting to get results, it’s always best to wait at least a week after your first missed period.

Prescriptions, such as Phenothiazine, Anticonvulsants, some diuretic, tranquilizers and Promethazine, can alter the results.  If these drugs contain any hCG, it can affect the reading levels.

For those who are taking urine tests, your urine may be contaminated if you clean the cup with soap beforehand.  Soap and detergent can contaminate the urine sample if you don’t wash all the soap out 100 percent.

How can I save money?

Most brands and stores offer coupons for their products.  Check online and in the weekly ads for discounts.

Consider checking local dollar stores.  Many tests online have shown that dollar store pregnancy tests are just as effective as name brands.

Since you’re going to need more than one test, it may be ideal to purchase a kit that contains more than 1 test.  It’s not uncommon to find tests that carry more than 20 to 50 strips.

Many main brands will commonly have coupons online through either their website or through searches.  Check for coupons before setting out to make a purchase.

How much do soccer goals cost?

The cost of a soccer goal will depend on the materials it’s made of, if it’s portable, what it’s being used for, the size and where it’s purchased.  Since there are goals designed for everyone, the prices can range from as little as $10 for a simple inflatable goal to as much as $3,000+ for a professional goal.    Take a look at our table below to see what you will more than likely pay for a goal.

A small practice goal intended for scrimmage play with no goalie, such as the Infinity Kwik Goal, will cost between $50 and $150 per goal depending on its features.  Some of these goals have pop-up features while others have to be put together and taken apart.  Some goals are weighted in the back to avoid falling over while others are not.

A training goal, such as the Coerver Kwik Goal, is a flat goal that can be used for shooting exercises on two sides.  This allows more shots per player resulting in more experience.  The price of these types of goals can range from $300 to $750 per goal depending on the size.

A youth-sized goal can be purchased for $600 to $1600 per goal.  The sizes range from 4’x6′ to 7’x21′ and get more expensive as they get bigger.

A regulation size goal measures 8’x24′ and can be purchased for $1000-$3000 depending on the brand.  Some of the more expensive goals include wheels for easy movement, weighted posts for stability and thicker posts for durability.  For example, the Evoluion Kwik Goal EVO 1.1 will cost about $2600.

A portable soccer goal that can fold easily or one that is even inflatable can cost anywhere from $30 to $300 depending on the brand.  A pop-up goal can cost anywhere from $20 to $80.  A pop-up goal is similar to a portable version but can fold up into a bag for easy transportation.

Soccer goals that are designed for indoor use can range anywhere from $125 to as much as $800 for a higher end model.  Official goals are going to be more toward the higher end of the price range.

Mini goals designed for children can cost anywhere from $25 to as much as $200, again, depending on the brand.

SoccerGarage.com has a large selection of soccer goals.  Here, a 6’x12′ goal retails for $99 to $300, while a 8′ x 24′ goal retails for $350 to as much as $3,500.

Soccer goals overview

Soccer goals will come in various sizes, shapes and options.  Most will be either constructed of either plastic or metal.  Also, a goal will either have depth or it won’t have depth at all.  A goal without depth is designed with lighter material and is usually found in youth leagues.  A goal with depth will extend about two feet deep and is typically made of a higher-grade material.  This net is often found in your higher leagues.

Goals can either be permanent or portable.  Portable goals will be lighter in weight and can be moved around easier for storage purposes.  These goals tend to be great for training and practice.  Permanent goals will be heavier, more durable, safer and will be installed in the ground with anchors.  These goals tend to hold up during any sort of gameplay and can be found at soccer complexes, schools and stadiums.

The training goals, such as Infinity and Coerver, come with the frame, the net, and any tools necessary to put the goal together.  Some may also come with an owner’s manual.

The youth size or full-size goals include only the frame and instructions for installation.

What are the extra costs?

Extra nets or replacement nets for the training goals will need to be purchased every few years depending on the amount of use it gets.  These nets will cost about $100-$150.

The nets for the youth size or full-size goals will cost between $100 and $400 per net depending on the size as well as the quality and durability of the material.

Net clips will be needed to attach the net to the frame of the goal.

If the goal you purchase is not weighted, sandbags may need to be purchased to help stabilize the goals.

If the goal will be permanent and has to be installed by a professional, additional fees may apply.

Because the frame of the goal is the most important part, and because these frames usually last many years, used goals can be purchased without too much risk of breaking.  Some brands of goals even come with a transferable warranty.  Check services such as Craigslist to look for previously used soccer goals.

If you only need a small net for recreational purposes, one can be made using simple PVC piping that can be purchased through Home Depot and other do-it-yourself stores.

How Much Does it Cost to Rent a Car?

When traveling long distances by car, some people prefer to put the miles and wear-and-tear on someone else’s car rather than their own.

Renting a car can solve this problem.

Renting a car can also be useful when traveling by plane so that you will have a car to drive when you arrive at your destination.

The price of the car you rent will depend on the type of car you wish to rent (sedan, SUV, van, truck, etc.), the duration of the rental, the day of the week and time of the year, and sometimes the miles projected to be put on the car.

How much does it cost to rent a car?

The average car rental price will fall anywhere between $10 to $175 per day.    Your smaller sedans will be closer to the $10 to $30 per day range, while larger 14-passenger vans could cost more than $150.  To get an exact quote for your upcoming rental, we highly recommend CarRentals.com.  This search engine compares all of the top car rental agencies and shows the price of each company on an easy-to-read chart.

Refer to our chart below for the charges we saw.  These were the lowest prices we could find when we did a three-day search through the year.  Remember there are many factors that affect the cost of a rental car such as the demand, the time of year, the type of car, the rental car agency, if it’s an airport location and if premium add-ons are added.

An economy car will cost about $30 to $55 per day, and these tend to be the least expensive and smallest car available on the lot.

What are the extra costs?

Many car rental services offer insurance that covers the car in case of an accident.  This insurance can cost an additional $10 to $30 per day, and when you sign up, you will avoid all liabilities related to the car, provided you’re not guilty of negligence.

Most rental car companies have an extra fee for drivers who are under the age of 25.  This fee varies from company to company, while some companies do not even allow drivers under 25.

If there is any damage done to the interior or exterior of the car, you will be responsible.

Most rental companies require the car to be returned with a full tank of gas unless you prepay before taking the keys.

Renting a car from the airport location can often incur surcharges.

Dropping the car off at a different location can lead to additional charges.

Adding additional items, such as a GPS or car seat, can be another $5 to $25 per day.

With some companies, adding an additional driver can cost extra.

Tips to know:

If you don’t care where you’re going to get the car rental from, consider using aggregator services that allow you to compare rentals all in one place. This will save you time from going from one website to another.

Avoid renting a car at the airport.  Airport locations are going to be the most expensive location.  Look for locations that are 10 to 20 minutes away from the airport.

When renting a car overseas, consider using the foreign version of the car rental agency, rather than the domestic version.

Know about all the fees up front.  If you have any type of travel-related credit card, you may find that the card will cover insurance costs and more.  Talk with your credit card company for more information.  Also, be sure to know your coverage in terms of what is going to be covered by your policy.

Get a breakdown of what the costs are going to be.  Car rental agencies are notorious for having hidden fees and restrictions.  Always get everything in writing.

How can I save money?

Booking your trip in advance is the best way to save money.  The earlier you reserve the car, the cheaper it will be.

Use services such as Priceline to find the best price for you.  You can also name your own price with their unique service.

There are many companies that offer coupons and discounts if you book directly through them instead of through a web service.

Check out the 7 ways to save on a car rental.

How to Find Deals

Look for Specials and Discounts

Most major car rental companies often give specials.  To find these specials, they can be found in many ways.  Some of the most common ways to find these specials include joining their email newsletter or even liking a Facebook fan page.  Most of these specials are going to have restrictions and qualifications, so don’t forget to read the fine print.  Specials can include deals such as free weekend days, a certain dollar amount off or even a group discount.  Besides specials, ask the rental car agencies if they accept AAA, CAA or AARP discounts.

Search for Coupon Codes

Those that have their hearts set on a certain rental car company can often find coupon codes floating around on the Internet.  A great way to find these coupon codes is by using a search engine such as Google.  The trick here is to make sure that the most recent results are used.  By using the most recent results, users can often find the freshest coupon codes that haven’t expired yet.  By using a search such as the company name followed by rental car deals or coupon codes can yield some decent results.

Compare with Aggregators

The Internet is a great place to compare a lot of rental car companies all at once.  Long gone are the days of calling up a travel agent’s office to get the best deal.  Checking rates couldn’t be easier online.  Boot up a car rental comparison website and check the rates for a date.  Browse through the many companies to see who’s offering the best rate at the time.  Before a reservation is placed, be sure to look for special offers and blackout dates.

NOTE:  Just because the car rental prices are cheap on a third-party website, it doesn’t mean that this will be a finalized price.  There are many extra charges to be aware of.  These extra charges can include collision damage waiver fees, fuel charges, taxes, additional driver fees, out-of-state charges, and the list can go on.  It’s important that these charges are known before showing up to a place.

Start Reservations Early

While waiting until the last-minute can often pop up some great deals, it isn’t a guarantee.  Start bargain hunting as soon as possible to make sure that plenty of time is available to find that deal.  Those that want to be advanced with their search are encouraged to keep notes and rental car information to keep track of the deals.

Avoid Airports

Car rental agencies that are located within the airport often charge 20 to 30 percent more than those located five miles away.  If traveling to a popular city that has rental car companies outside of the airport, highly consider taking a taxi to this site and not book through the site within the airport.
