How Much Does a Tunnel Boring Machine Cost?

A tunnel boring machine, also known as a mole, is a machine having a circular cross section used to dig tunnels and excavate through different soil and rock varieties.  Some tunnel boring machines measure 428.5 feet long and have a trailing support gear measuring 361 feet long, which consist of a 42.3-foot long cutter head and 6 gantries.  While tunnel boring machines are highly useful in drilling, blasting, and construction purposes, they are very expensive to construct, require significant infrastructure, and can be difficult to transport.  Most of the tunnel boring machines used are owned by construction corporations, rental companies, or the city road commissions.  There are tunnel boring machines that are quite small that can be used for small jobs such as making room for an underground piping system, but there are also very large ones that can even dig a tunnel through the floor of the ocean.  The price of the tunnel boring machine will depend on the purpose of the machine, the size you purchase, and the company selling it.
