An antique or vintage board, however, could cost more than $300.  The original William Fuld Ouija board, for example, can cost as much as $30 to $180+ used on eBay.

The highest rated Ouija boards on Amazon.com, for instance, retail for about $15 to $25.

At Walmart, for instance, the glow-in-the-dark board retails for close to $70 while a basic board with no frills retails for $20.

A murphy bed, also known as a wall bed or hide-a-bed, is a functional piece of furniture that can convert any room of your home into a bedroom in an instant.

How much does a murphy bed cost?

The cost of a murphy bed will depend on the manufacturer, the size, materials, where you purchase it and if you need it customized.  For most beds that require no customization and can be setup straight out of the box, similar to a computer desk, the costs can range anywhere from as little as $600 to $3,000.  

At Costco, for instance, pre-made wall beds range anywhere from as little as $1,000 to more than $2,800. These beds require no professional installation and act as a bookshelf/drawer when not in use.  The beds on Walmart were in the same price range as well.

However, if you were to want a customized murphy bed, built into the wall, for instance, then the costs could range from $3,000 to $10,000, depending on your needs.  When a bed is customized, you will be able to customize/add lighting, shelving, decorative fronts, crown molding, pull-down tables, cabinetry, sofa and/or nightstands.  Adding a simple painted shelf, for example, could cost as little as $250, whereas a wardrobe cabinet made of a cherry veneer could cost upwards of $4,000.

ValetCustom.com, a company located in California that creates customized murphy beds, claims it can create a customized bed starting $2,900, and this price would include delivery, installation and a $750 retail-value mattress.

California Closets, a popular company that manufactures customized murphy beds, charges anywhere from $3,000 for a simple bed to as much as $20,000 for a customized project with extravagant cabinetry, according to the Denver Post.

How Much Does a Munchkin Cat Cost?

The munchkin cat, sometimes called a magpie for its fondness for shiny things, is known for its very short legs.

This breed, which sprang from a natural genetic mutation, was developed in the 1980s in the United States and named after the short figure characters in the Wizard of Oz.

Other than its shorter-than-average legs, he will resemble any other cat you come across.

How much does a munchkin cat cost?

On average, a Munchkin cat can cost anywhere from $400 and $800, but older cats can often be found at shelters for less than $100.  The costs will depend on the breeder, quality, cat’s history, the coat color, eye colors, coat pattern, geographical location and inclusions with the adoption.  The availability of Munchkin cats may be limited, considering the breed is relatively new.

CatsNow.com, an online cat classified website, had close to 100 listings online, with prices ranging from as little as $300 to more than $1,200.

SweetieKitty.com states the average cost of a kitten is about $425 and the annual cost, on average, can be close to $670.

What is going to be included in the adoption fee?

A reputable breeder should include registration paperwork, up-to-date vaccinations, a health guarantee and a vet exam report from a licensed vet.  If the cat is going to be shipped, a carrier should be included as well.

What are the extra costs?

Always budget for all recurring costs, including starter supplies, food, cat litter, toys, cat sitting and routine/surprise vet visits.  Even a healthy cat can cost $350 to $500 per year.

Finding a show-quality Munchkin cat can be hard, and for that reason, you may need to have it shipped via an airline, which can lead to additional costs.  The average cost to ship a cat via an airline can range anywhere from $150 to $350.

Tips to know:

Usually small to medium in size, with a moderate body type and medium-lush coat, males are slightly larger than their female counterpart, weighing around six to nine pounds.  Common coat colors include white, chocolate, lilac, blue, red and cream, with patterns coming as either pointed, mitted, bicolor or lynx.

Types of mulch

Pebble mulch consists of very small pebbles and is often used for playgrounds or walkways.  It provides great drainage of water.

Rock mulch offers the same benefits of pebble mulch, but it is made of larger rocks.  This is often used for driveways.

Pumice rock, commonly known as lava rock, is very porous has the ability to retain water and is therefore commonly used for flower beds.

Straw mulch is normally used in rustic areas and is used mostly for sidewalks.  Most people say that this is the least useful type of mulch.

Newspaper and cardboard can be used to make mulch, which is a great way to recycle these products.  This mulch is great at suppressing weeds.

How Much Does a Lumbar MRI Cost?

An MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, is a painless, non-invasive, and safe medical procedure that helps physicians identify and treat medical conditions.  It uses a powerful magnetic field and radio waves to come up with a detailed three-dimensional picture of the lumbar spine, which includes the disks, bones, and almost all other internal body structures.  Unlike a CAT scan or CT scan, an MRI does not use radiation.

Sometimes, an MRI is conducted to evaluate the anatomy of the lumbar spine to serve as a guide in the planning for surgery on the spine or to observe the changes in the spine after an operation.  A lumbar MRI may also be used to determine the problem with the back in the first place.

A lumbar spine MRI is helpful when analyzing lower back pain, leg pain, leg tingling, a lower spine injury, signs of cancer or prior to a lower back surgery procedure.

How much does a lumbar MRI cost?

The costs of a lumbar MRI will depend on the hospital/facility, geographical location, if the contrast is needed and if insurance is included.

On average, a lumbar spine MRI is going to cost $500 to $3,000+ without insurance.  However, if you have a health insurance policy, it should be covered.  Be sure to check with your provider to know exactly what your policy is going to be covered.  Those who either want a new policy or are looking for a new one, consider browsing through hundreds of policies for free at eHealthInsurance.com.

We researched a few freestanding centers and hospitals located throughout the United States and were given the following estimates without insurance:

The Healthcare Bluebook, for example, says the average spine MRI, without contrast, can cost $513 to $1,605.

On this Spine-Health.com forum thread, someone asked what they should expect to pay for a lumbar MRI.  According to those who responded, one person was billed $897, while another was billed $3,200 for the MRI and another $823 for the contrast.  Those who had insurance had paid anywhere from $300 to $900.

Prior to the scan, you will be asked to remove any metal objects.  Then, you will lie on a moveable table that slides into the tunnel where the MRI takes place.  If contrast dye were being used, the doctor will inject it via a tube that’s inserted into one of your veins.  If this were the case, you may have to wait up to one hour to allow the contrast to work its way through your bloodstream.  The scan will take 30 to 60 minutes but could take longer depending on the positioning required.

A lumbar MRI will be able to evaluate the cervical bones, muscle, tissue, spinal cord and the lower brain.  It can detect fractures, bone infections, tumors, bulges, disc flattening and if there’s any blockage inside the spinal canal.

After the procedure, you’re free to go home, but if you did take a sedative, then you will have to bring someone along to help you get home.  As for the images, it may take a few hours if the facility was using film, but in most cases, a computer will be used, which in this case, the results can be seen immediately.

It can take up to a week to receive your results.  When available, your doctor will call you to discuss your results either over the phone or in person.

What are the extra costs?

An MRI with contrast will cost up to 30 percent more than one without it.

If you feel claustrophobic or have anxiety before the procedure, then you may be prescribed a mild sedative, which can cost another $150 to $350.

The radiologist’s fee is often not included in the above prices.  If you need a reading by a radiologist, this could be another $100 to $200.

The cost of the MRI does not include the cost of the initial visit to the doctor who ordered the MRI.

Based on the findings of the MRI scan, the physician may issue prescriptions, which are not included in the cost of the MRI examination itself.  You may also need more treatment in the future depending on the results found.

Tips to know:

Some clinics or treatment centers use an open MRI machine with large openings to keep claustrophobic patients comfortable.  If you feel claustrophobic in tighter spaces, then you may want to find a center that uses this type of machine.

The risks, as mentioned by HealthLine.com, are rare, but they do occur.  For example, an MRI can result in problems if you had a pacemaker and/or implanted screws.  Another reaction may be due to the contrast dye.  During some scans, people may find themselves allergic to the contrast.

How can I save money?

For those who don’t have a health insurance policy, be sure to ask about cash discounts or financing options.  In some cases, you could save as much as $500 if you were to pay all of it in full.

Always choose a freestanding facility instead of a hospital as this option will always save you hundreds of dollars.  Most centers will be more than happy to offer you a quote over the phone or even on its website, so it doesn’t hurt to get as many quotes as possible.

How Much Does a Luan Cost?

Luan, generated from the lauan or lawaan tree, is a lightweight wood.  Even though it is not completely accurate, luan is sometimes referred to as a medium-grade Philippine mahogany because it can be finished to look like the more expensive wood.  The luan species of wood is commonly found in the South Pacific rim and Asia, specifically in the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

Luan is sometimes promoted as a solid board or light plywood.  Its surface finish is very smooth, and most often, without defects.  But if ever you notice a slight defect in luan plywood, it can be easily filled and sanded smooth.

How much does luan plywood cost?

Most sheets of luan at a local lumber yard/retailer will be between $7 and $30 per sheet.  The cost will depend on the thickness and the size that needs to be cut.  Most average purchases will be $15 to $20 per sheet or about $0.40 to $0.60 per square foot for a 4’x’8′, 1/4-inch thick board.

According to bestluan.blogspot.com, the cost of a ¼-inch thick piece of Luan plywood is about $15 per sheet.

PlywoodPrice.net says a 1/8-inch thick piece of luan plywood retails for $18 while a 1/4-inch thick piece can cost $21.  3/8-inches and 3/4-inches can be between $55 to $70.

Luan plywood is usually cut in four to eight feet long and can come in a variety of thicknesses, including 1/8, ¼, ½ or ¾ of an inch.

Luan is made of a composite that comes from tropical woods and particle board.  This type of wood is balanced, reducing the warping when installed.  It is flexible, workable and can be reused.  It is also resistant to shrinking, splitting and twisting.

If you need the plywood cut to a specific size, the retailer may charge a small fee.

Uses of luan plywood

Luan can be used as a floor underlayment, which is sandwiched in between the subfloor and the finished flooring. This layer provides additional support to ensure the floor finish is smooth, level and firm. For this reason, Luan plywood is considered an acceptable underlayment material for its resiliency. It often works well with different floor finishes, including carpet, vinyl tiles and hardwood floors.

Luan plywood’s distinct strength can be attributed to the different layers of wood glued together to create a panel. Because it is lightweight and relatively cheap, Luan plywood — particularly those that are 1/8 inch and 1/4 inch thick  — is considered good material for cabinet and furniture backing and drawer sides and bottoms. The thicker 3/4-inch plywood is used for less expensive grade furniture such as tables, chairs, bookshelves and plant boxes.

Both white and red Luan plywood can serve as a solid surface panel for doors with hollow cores. It has been used in the U.S. as a door-facing since the late 1950s, as reported by the nonprofit organization Rainforest  Relief. When red Luan wood is stained, it resembles the surface of the mahogany wood. On the other hand, the white Luan door resembles cherry wood when treated and finished.

Apart from large woodworking projects that can be created from luan plywood, it is also used in making small crafts. The 1/8 inch thick plywood is a popular material for making doll houses and birdhouses. Since it will not split or splinter when cut into smaller pieces, it is also used as backing for picture frames and making miniature woodcrafts.

Tips to know:

Luan plywood is usually pinkish in color, although some materials can appear to have a shade that is more reddish than others.

When cutting luan plywood, do it from the back of the sheet and support it on either side.  Because the board tends to be thin, cutting can become a challenge.

If you intend to make luan board as an underlayment, make sure that the existing subfloor is securely fastened to the floor joists.

If your room is not prone to excessive moisture, consider using luan as an underlayment for vinyl flooring.

You can get cheaper luan panels out of sapwood from the mahogany tree.

If you wish your luan plywood to achieve a high sheen,  apply a dark stain and several coats of a polyurethane clear finish.

Luan is different from mahogany in that it is generally much more grainy than mahogany and second, it does not take on a patina the way mahogany does.

How Much Do Mussels Cost?

Mussels are a type of clam, usually long and wedge shaped, which grow in the ocean, along the shoreline.

How much do mussels cost?

On average, be prepared to pay anywhere from $3 to as much as $6 per pound for fresh mussels.  The costs will fluctuate depending on the time of year and where they are purchased from.

At the time of this writing, top sellers on Amazon.com were selling four-pound bags of mussels for about $50.

Whole Foods, for example, sells mussels for $5 per two pounds.

Wegmans, another popular grocery store chain, sells a two-pound bag for $6.

At our local Costco store, the costs were closer to $13.50 per pound.

As for frozen bags, the prices can be a pinch less, about $5 per two-pound bag.

For example, Walmart sells a two-pound bag of fully cooked mussels from a farm for about $5.

Mussels overview

Most retailers are going to either sell them by the pound or package them into one or two-pound bag.  If purchasing online, a reputable retailer will often package 10 to 20 percent more than the said weight since some can go bad during the shipping process.  In a pound, expect about 20 to 25 mussels, which can feed two to three people, on average.

Mussels can either be purchased frozen or fresh in the seafood department of any grocery store.  They can also be ordered online or via a local fish market.  If purchased frozen, they will already be cleaned, cooked and vacuum sealed.  All you will need to do is open it, boil it for up to 10 minutes and serve with any sauce/ingredients.

Mussels can be harvested straight from the ocean or can be grown at local farms for commercial use.

What are the extra costs?

If ordering online, additional shipping fees may apply.  Due to the sensitivity of the order, most orders will have to arrive on your doorstep within a few days.  Most shipping fees should be no more than $10, but it can be waived if you meet a certain spending requirement.

Tips to know:

If you buy mussels, cook them on the same day because they expire very quickly.

Buy mussels with tightly closed shells.  This means that they are fresh.

If fresh, mussels should smell like salt water.

Before cooking, clean the mussels with fresh water.  Remove any barnacles or weeds that are stuck on the shells.

Soaking the mussels in fresh water will kill them, so it’s best to avoid this to keep them as fresh as possible.

Look for chipped or cracked shells or any opened mussels.  Separate them from the others and throw them out.  These are signs that the mussels are not fresh or safe to eat anymore.

Scrub off any beard found on a mussel.  Usually, the beards are already removed upon purchase, but if this is not the case, remove it by grabbing and pulling it firmly.  If this does not work out, you can use a knife or a scissor to cut the beard.

Do not overcook the mussels because they will become tough and they will shrink.  It will only take a few minutes to cook them.

Although there are many benefits of eating mussels, there are also a few risks.  Mussels have a high risk of carrying bacteria that is common among seafood and should be cooked immediately or purchased pre-cooked and frozen.  Mussels may also contain dangerous algae in their tissues.  Even cooking the mussels in extreme temperatures will not kill these algae.  Luckily, government agencies closely regulate this and will not allow any exposed mussels to be sold.

Mussels have a limited shelf life, and it is highly recommended that they are consumed within 24 to 48 hours.

If you plan to cook the mussels after a few days, store them in the fridge.  Make sure to keep them damp by wrapping either wet newspaper or damp cloth around them.  This will make the mussels last a lot longer, usually up to a week.  If frozen, they can last up to four months as long as stored properly.

Like many other types of meat and seafood, mussels are very high in protein.  However, they are also very low in fat; this makes them even healthier than meats such as beef.

Mussels are very low in calories, only containing about 70 calories per 3 ounces.

The cost of mudjacking will depend on the condition of the surface, the size, where you live and who you hire.  In most cases, a typical residential job will cost about $500 to $1,000.  Generally, your contractor will charge by the square foot and can come to your home to offer a free estimate.  In most cases, be prepared to $4 to $7 per square foot, with companies charging a minimum job fee, which is usually around $150 to $250, depending on how far you’re away from their location.

Mudjacking overview

During the process, contractors will drill two to five-inch holes into the concrete and will then pump a “slurry,” which consists of water, dirt and cement, into the holes, eventually raising the concrete to a leveled surface.  When raised, the holes are then filled with concrete.

The newer holes, even though they are small, won’t match the color of your existing concrete because the newer concrete will be lighter than the original concrete colors.  Over time, however, these patches will darken as it ages.

The process, as long as done properly, can last many years, sometimes even decades.  However, if the ground wasn’t 100 percent compacted and the soil continues to wash beneath, then the soil can wash out, causing the concrete to sink yet again.

A building permit will not be required to complete this job.

American clinics, on average, charge close to $10,000 per treatment, but some clinics have reduced their costs to as little as $7,000, according to Ipscell.com.  While it may seem cheaper to go outside of the United States, this isn’t always the cheapest route, either.  In fact, it can cost as much as $20,000 to more than $100,000 in foreign countries.  The costs, in the end, will depend on the type of stem cell procedure, the doctor’s reputation, the local cost of living and where you go.  To budget, plan on spending $4,000 to $15,000 per treatment.

Stem cell therapy overview

Stem cell therapy refers to a non-invasive procedure where stem cells are harvested from either your own body or a donor’s body and then injected into the damaged portion of your body to help it heal.  Damaged body parts commonly include the elbow, back, hip, knee or wrist.  Unlike the past, when embryonic stem cells of yore were used, today, only adult stem cells are used.
