How Much Does a CT (CAT) Scan Cost?

A CAT scan, also referred to as a CT SCAN, is a noninvasive medical test that will help your doctor diagnose and treat certain medical conditions such as cancer, infections, trauma, musculoskeletal disorders and cardiovascular disease.  These scans can also help a physician when performing a biopsy.

How much does a CAT scan cost?

On average, a CAT scan cost anywhere from $300 to $2,500 depending on the body part being examined, if dye is required and the urgency of the procedure.  A lower end scan that doesn’t use a dye is going to cost less than a full scan that includes multiple images and dye.

The price is going to rise for each additional body part that is scanned.  For example, if you need to have four to six body parts scanned, such as the pelvis, abdomen, and chest, the price can be in the $3,600 to $6,500 range.  This would be the price for those who don’t have insurance.

Check with your insurance company to see if they will cover a procedure such as this.  As long as it’s deemed medically necessary, the insurance company will more than likely cover it.

Health.com says $146 is a fair price for a CT to measure calcium deposits in your coronary arteries and $1,418 for a whole-body PET (positron emission tomography) scan with CT imaging.

New York, NY$1,900 to $2,300
Philadelphia, PA$1,800 to $2,100
Phoenix, AZ$1,400 to $1,700

Factors that affect the cost:

The number of body parts

The number of body parts that need to be examined can heavily increase the price.

Dye injection

If dye or contrast is involved, plan on spending additional money.

The location

A CAT scan can be done in two different places.  These places include a hospital or outpatient imaging center.  Hospitals will generally cost more than an outpatient center.

Geographical location

Some areas will have more hospitals than others.  Generally, the more hospitals there are, the more competition there will be.

CAT scan overview

A CAT scan will rapidly create pictures of the body allowing the doctors to diagnose problems such as cardiovascular disease, cancer and disorders.  If necessary, a dye is used if they want to further enhance the images of the scan.  This dye will either be injected with a thin prick or if available, it can be swallowed as well.

During the procedure, you may be asked to change into a gown.  Once in the facility, the patient will receive a contrast agent that enhances the images of the blood vessels if required, and once the contrasting agent has been admitted, the patient will be asked to lay flat on a scanner bed.  Next, the table will move into position so the specific area can be scanned.   Depending on how many scans are needed, the machine may pass multiple times.

The procedure should take no more than 45 minutes.  Once completed, results will come within 24 to 48 hours after a radiologist studies the results.

Some hospitals or diagnostic centers include a copy of the films or a CD of the images once the scan has been performed.

What are the extra costs?

Prior to a CAT scan procedure, it is ideally required to have a physician check-up in order to get a prescription and prior explanation regarding the procedure and assessment.

The use of contrast or dye will also cause you to spend more than the usual CAT scan procedure.

During the procedure, the patient may feel nervous or manifest symptoms of claustrophobia that will require the healthcare team to administer medicine for relaxation.

IVs and medication can be prescribed, depending on the patient and the circumstances.

Hospitals are going to cost more than a local clinic, so be sure to shop around before choosing a hospital.

A copy of the film as well as the CD of the MRI are going to more than likely cost extra.  Depending on the  hospital and/or clinic, this may be included.

If the procedure is cancelled within 24 hours, a heavy fee can be applied.  Due to the nature of setting of these machines, most hospitals don’t have the choice but to bill you this late fee.

A cancellation fee can apply if you were to cancel within 48 hours.  Depending on the hospital, this could be as high as $500.

Tips to know:

Doctors will recommend that you limit your drinking before the CT scan, and it’s also recommended that you watch the sugar intake prior to the scan.  Try to leave all metal jewelry at home as this can affect the scan.

If any medications are taken, the facility will more than likely want to know about them.  Be sure to provide them with a list of all medications taken.

When getting a CAT scan, make sure that you know what’s going to be covered.  If possible, get everything in writing.

When the CAT scan is completed, will it come with additional images?

How can I save money?

You need to compare the prices of one facility from another in order to get the best possible price for the procedure.  Since this is a very common procedure, most hospitals should be able to offer a price over the phone.  Highly consider a freestanding facility instead of a hospital as these will be much cheaper.

Verify with your insurance company if your chosen facility for the CAT scan procedure is covered.  When choosing a provider, always make sure they are in network.  Medicare and Medicaid should cover the procedure if deemed medically necessary.  For example, Part B will cover diagnostic non-laboratory tests, including CT scans, but the price will vary for those under Part A.

Consider paying with cash if you don’t have an insurance policy.  Many hospitals will give up to a 70% discount if paying with cash.

Some hospitals may be able to setup payment plans for those who can’t pay in full.  If you meet certain income restrictions, hospitals may even waive a portion of the bill.

How Much Does a Cat Leg Amputation Cost?

A cat leg amputation is performed when a cat either has a disease or a significant leg injury that prevents your cat from walking.

After a leg amputation, cats will surprisingly revert back to their old ways,  sometimes not even knowing a leg is missing since they don’t need to perform fine motor skills.  Most cats will not suffer mentally.

An amputation can be performed on all breeds, no matter what the age is, and the cost of this type of amputation will vary depending on the severity of the issue, the veterinarian performing it, geographical location and if any other tests are required.

How much does a cat leg amputation cost?

On average, expect to pay about $800 to $2,500.  This is generally going to include the initial visit, the x-rays performed to diagnose the problem, tests and the surgery.  If the disease or fracture can be resolved via a simple surgery and no amputation is required, this can cost anywhere from $300 to $1,200.

Someone posted their exact bill on tripawds.com and said, all in all, it cost them a total of $2,200.  This included the exam, x-rays, medicine and surgery.

Cat leg amputation overview

An amputation will be recommended for three reasons:  to remove a tumor, if severe trauma is present or if another repair option is too costly.  If a larger tumor is present, it may be hard for the veterinarian to create an incision; therefore, he or she may have no option but to remove the entire limb.  If trauma is noted, which can include multiple fractures or trauma to the tendons, ligaments or muscles, then this surgical procedure may be recommended as well.  Lastly, some vets may recommend an amputation is the traumatized limbs would be too costly if they were to perform a surgical procedure.

Before the amputation is even considered, a vet will want to take a routine blood work and take x-rays to determine if there’s a fracture or any tumors present.   This will help them find the out the underlying problem and help confirm the diagnosis.  If a larger tumor is present and it can’t be removed via surgery, then an amputation will be performed to remove the limb as well as the tumor to make sure it does not grow back and spread.

A doctor will recommend that a cat’s leg is completely amputated when trauma is noted or cancer is present.  With a tumor, the only way to have it not spread would be through a surgery such as this.

Prior to the surgery, a painkiller or analgesic will be injected into the affected site to help block the pain receptors before the surgery even begins.  With most amputations, the amount the oncologist cuts will depend on where the lesion is located.  The most common area will be near the upper part of the thigh bone, and if this is the case, the muscle will be cut at the site and will be brought over the bone to create a smooth stump appearance.  If it’s above or even around the knee, the amputation will be made closer to the hip joint.  Tumors higher up on the leg may require removing the pelvis.

Following the procedure, most cats will be back to their daily routine within 48 hours.

What are the extra costs?

If cancer is suspected, the vet will want to complete additional tests such as a biopsy, x-rays as well as additional blood work.  This would then be sent off to a lab for further testing, which could take up to a few weeks and could, of course, cost extra.

In addition to the surgery, radiation therapy may be needed for certain limb tumors.

An Elizabethan collar, which is designed to prevent your cat from licking themselves, will be recommended or required to help the wound site heal.

A few follow-up visits will be required to make sure the cat is healing properly.  An office visit fee will generally apply.  10 to 15 days after the surgery, the vet will want to remove the stitches and closely examine the site to make sure it healed properly.

Some veterinarian offices will not include the x-ray fees or lab work that needs to be done.  It’s important to ask to see what’s going to be included in the surgery bill.

Painkillers will be prescribed after the amputation has been performed and will need to be given orally for a few weeks, depending on how the cat heals.

How can I save money?

Explore your options with more than two vets to ensure that you receive the best quote and advice.  Amputation will always be the last resort.

Most clinics can work on a payment plan or recommend a company that may be able to help finance your bill.

How Much Does Catholic School Cost?

Catholic schools are private schools that are part of the Catholic Church.  As of 2013, the church operates the largest non-government related schools system.  Besides the typical curriculum taught in the public sector, the Catholic schools put an emphasis on religion as well.  The cost of tuition for schooling is going to greatly vary depending on the church, the location, and other factors.

How much does catholic school cost?

For an elementary school, the average tuition can range anywhere from $3,200 to $8,000 per pupil per year.

For a secondary education, which includes both middle school and high school, the tuition will be about $5,100 to $16,500 per year.

Christ the King Catholic School in Mesa, Arizona, for instance, charges $4,834 per student and sibling discounts are available.

We looked at a handful of schools across the United States and were able to come up with the averages by either contacting the school or visiting their website.  We left out the names of the school and instead added where the school was located.

Catholic school overview

Catholic schools put an emphasis on religion in their curriculum.  While some require you do not have to be Catholic to attend the school, the high majority of the students are.  For example, one school online states you must be baptized as a Catholic, be registered in the parish and attend the church regularly in order for your child to qualify.

Classroom sizes will range from 20 to 30 students and operate as any other public or private school.  The school is privately funded through donations and tuition fees.

What are the extra costs?

Registration fees will apply to those students who are going new to the school and returning families may have to pay smaller registration fees as well.  These starter fees can range anywhere from $50 to $200.  This application fee is going to be non-refundable and keep in mind that all students don’t get accepted.

Books and other supplies may be required, depending on the classrooms and labs.  Unlike the public sector that is funded by tax dollars, many classrooms rely on the students to provide the material.  This is not always the case as it can vary from school to school.

School uniforms are mandatory in most Catholic Schools and will be an additional expense to consider. See: “How much do school uniforms cost?

If you are going to do extracurricular activities such as sports or clubs, most will have a participation fee.  This could be anywhere from $50 to $200 per sport.

Some schools implement a supply fee to help stock the classrooms with the necessary supplies and textbooks.  Schools may either add this to the overall tuition or may charge it separately.

Tips to know

Most schools will ask parents to volunteer at least 10 to 30 hours per semester.

Close to 30 percent of Catholic schools have waiting lists, so it’s important to register as early as possible or ask ahead of time to see if a waiting list is active.

How can I save money?

Consider talking with an admissions officer about financial aid.  Many schools offer financial aid to help those families that have a harder time affording the tuition.

On top of financial aid, consider looking for scholarships that are available for these types of schools.  For example, 12 states offer more than 18 different voucher/scholarship programs.  11 states offer tax credit scholarships and/or some sort of tax deduction.

Compare at least two schools in the area to see what they have to offer.  Most schools are going to greatly vary with their staff, the building, classes offered, and other things.  If the tuition is cheaper, you may get what you pay for.

Some schools may offer discounts to those that have more than one child attending or for those who are already attending the church itself.  This is also known as a multi-child discount and on average, it can save upwards of 30% on each student.

Members of the local Catholic Church may be able to get discounted tuition.  Check with your church to see what the rules are when registering.

How can I save money?

Consider all different breeds if you plan on having one as a pet.  Each catfish will greatly vary in pricing as some are rare while others are somewhat common.

Check with the local pet shops to see what they have in stock.  It is going to be a lot easier to transport from a local pet shop than to purchase them online and have them shipped to your home.

How Much Do Shipping Containers Cost?

Cargo containers, made from a modular, stackable material, are storage containers that can be used to store different types of product used for trade and shipping.  These containers are designed to handle virtually all elements since they will be stored outside most of the time.

Aside from being served as a way to ship goods via a truck, train or boat, containers are often used on business and home premises.  They can also be shaped by architects to turn them into a home or office.

Multicolored containers” (CC BY 2.0) by  Håkan Dahlström

How much do shipping containers cost?

The price of cargo containers usually depends on the size of container, the amenities inside, condition it’s in and the number you purchase at once.

On average, cargo containers can cost anywhere from $1,500 to as much as $4,500+ for just the container.  Since it’s too expensive to ship the containers back to where it originated from, most will sell after they have been unloaded.  Cargo containers near a popular port will be much cheaper to transport than one that’s not.

A 20-foot container can cost $1,700 to $3,400.  A 40-foot container can cost anywhere from $2,000 to $4,700, while a hi-cube reefer refrigerated container can cost $8,000 to $9,500.  A Conex box, which is often a popular brand purchased online, can cost about $1,500 to $2,500 used for a 20-foot container.

A smaller 10-foot container can sell for as little as $1,500 to as much as $3,400.

A 60-foot x 60-foot steel container, made of a heavy duty BLUFF steel and full-width stiffener for added strength and stability, can cost $1,200 to $1,500.

For example, EquipmentTrader.com lists a 2002 A-plus grade A cargo container for $2,000 to $2,400.

WikiHow claims an as-is container can cost $1,500 and a like-new or a modified container can cost $5,000 to $8,000.

Modified shipping containers, which may have at higher prices, and these containers could have air conditioners, heaters, skylights, vents, fans or fully customized to be livable.  Due to the many customizations, it’s hard to price these because it’s like a home — there are a lot of factors involved.

Shipping container overview

Cargo containers will commonly be 20 or 40 feet long and common heights will include 8.5 and 9.5 feet.  Most will be 8 feet wide, but extra wide containers are available and can measure up to 48 feet in length.

Common names you will see will be either standard, which will have a standard 8.5-foot height, or high cube, which will have a 9.5-foot height.

Most cargo containers are going to be considered a “dry van” with double doors.  Higher-end premium cargo holders can have a refrigeration system to keep the items cool inside the container.

What are the extra costs?

Due to the size, shipping/freight fees will apply.  Based on recent quotes on UShip.com, the average shipping cost was $500 to more than $3,000, depending on the size.

Because of size, bigger lots may be required to store them if you don’t have space.

One way to keep the containers from rusting and in good shape will be with a simple paint job.  While optional, it’s highly recommended you pay with an industrial-based alkyd enamel.

Shipping containers can take a beating as they arrive at its destination, and repairs may be needed upon arrival.  Some common repairs include the doors not shutting properly, the seals breaking, holes on the sides or a flooring issue.  Doors, depending on the size, can cost $300 to $900, while a new lockbox will cost about $50 to $200.  Lockrods and newer handles can cost about $100 per set, while rubber gaskets, which fitted to the container to prevent water damage, can cost about $45.  These are all prices for the parts only and won’t include professional labor.  To have a professional fix the issue, this can be two to three times the amount.

Tips to know

If you’re going to store a container on your property, check with your local city to know the rules/regulations as many have restrictions on what you can and can’t place on your property.

If you plan on storing the container in inclement weather or near the ocean, look for one made from corten steel.  This material can stand up to almost all weather without rusting.

“No shipping label,” a commonly used term on classified ads means the cargo container will have no logos and will be a plain color.

A “cargo worthy” container, another term you may see, means it has been inspected by a cargo surveyor.  A “one trip” container means it has only been shipped one time and will be in close to new.

To see what a container can cost in your area, Western Container Sales offers an easy-to-use cart system, showing you what it would cost for certain sizes.

Before purchasing, try to inspect it in person to check for any signs of damage.  Closely inspect the roof, flooring, doors and walls to see if there are any signs of rust.  Also, make sure the doors closely properly.

When buying used, make sure you play it safe and call the number located on the side to make sure the person selling it to you really owns it.

How can I save money?

Highly consider eBay to find second-hand containers.  This is a great way to save up to 60%.  Another great resource is to check out Craigslist, where you can find local businesses getting rid of old cargo containers either because they have purchased a new one or even because they are going out of business and need to liquidate their company.

If you only need the container for a few months, highly consider renting as this will be the cheapest option.

Bulk purchases can often bring the “per unit” price down.

Always haggle when purchasing.  Since there’s an overload of these containers at most ports, sellers are willing to work out a deal.  If anything, try to get free shipping out of the deal.

How Much Does Catering Cost?

Catering is ideal for those who want to throw a party or event without having to worry about cooking, cleaning up, or doing any of those necessary kitchen chores.  This is not only going to give you more time to enjoy the event, but it also offers your guests a variety of things to eat.

How much are catering prices?

When it comes to catering, there are five popular options:  a full-service catering service, buffet catering service, drop-off catering, wedding catering or corporate lunch catering.

On average, catering can cost anywhere between $8 and $75 per plate.  Most caterers are going to fall between the $10 and $25 per person, but higher end caterers can be as high as $80.  The cost of a caterer is going to greatly depend on the size of the party, the type of food being served, the type of catering and the company.

A full-service catering service, which will do everything from prep the food on the spot to including a staff to help with the event, can cost an average of $51 to $95 per person.  WeddingBee.com members did a poll and more than 47 percent paid $61 or more per person.

A buffet catering service, which will prep the food either on site or in their professional kitchen, will set up the buffet and monitor it as guests use it.  This will be a cheaper option when compared to a full-service option and will cost anywhere from $13 to $28 per person.

A drop-off catering service, which, as the name says, will simply drop off the food and you will be responsible for setting everything up.  The catering service will either deliver the food to you or they may the option to allow you to pick it up on the day of your event.  This type of service can cost $5 to $15 per person.  For example, 12stcatering.com offers a drop-off catering service and charges $4.50 per person for breakfast sandwiches or $8.95 per person for a full continental breakfast.

For a corporate luncheon or meeting, many companies/restaurants can do box lunches or dinners.  These are simple box meals will include something simple such as a sub sandwich and chips.  This type of setup can cost anywhere from $5 to $19 per box.

Local restaurants can create catering packages that can feed up to 20 to 40+ people, and depending on the type of restaurant, the prices will often be close to what you would pay at the restaurant.  A sandwich platter at Subway, for instance, can cost $35 for about nine people.

Members on theknot.com said they have seen quotes as low as $13 per person to more than $80 per person with alcohol being served at weddings.

What are the extra costs?

Caterers generally won’t include items such as drinks or alcoholic beverages.   While some services may be able to include them, it will be added to the plate fees.

Dinnerware and linens could be an additional $1 to $6 per person, depending on the quality.

Most catered food can either be done on the spot or can be picked up from a specific location.  For those who want to have the food delivered, this can cost extra.  More than likely the food will be prepped and served the say of the party/wedding.

Including appetizers and a dessert menu can increase the costs per person.

Corking the wine could incur $1 to $3 fee.

Depending on the service, a tip will be recommended.  While some add it, many expect it if they don’t.  Plan on adding at least 20 percent for a good tip.

If the party goes longer than expected, additional hourly expenses can apply.

Tips to know:

According to the Bridal Association of America, the average catering cost for most wedding ranged anywhere from $80 to $90 per plate.  With drinks, cake and dinner, the average bill for most weddings were between $10,000 and $13,000 for an average of 150 guests.

Always make sure your caterer is licensed by the local county health department.

Ask around for a good referral.  Consider asking the venue, friends/family who were recently married or even searching online.  Always interview at least three to five before making a choice.

How can I save money?

Monday through Thursdays tend to be a caterer’s slow day.  Many companies will be able to give you a discount that could be up to 20 percent if you were willing to work with their schedules.

Meet with the caterer to discuss your options.  Many of them will be more than happy to work out a plan that will meet your budget as long as it’s fair.

The more people that eat at an event, the more you may be able to save per plate.  Most catering companies will put the prices into three groups such as 50 people, 50 to 150 people and 150 or more people.

Choose the least expensive food items.  There’s no reason to choose filet mignon if meatballs are 75 percent less in price.

As you can see, catering can get expensive.  Consider gathering some friends and preparing the meals yourself.

Passing on the appetizers and desserts could cut costs.

Consider purchasing food that’s in season.  Food in season will be cheaper and will taste much better.

How Much Does Cataract Surgery for Dogs Cost?

When a dog’s lens of its eye “clouds” in a white to blue color, it may be time for cataract surgery.  Just like in a human, this surgery will replace the damaged lens with an intraocular lens implant, also known as IOL.

The cataract is the opacity of the lens that prevents the light from reaching the retina, and these cataracts can develop for a variety of reasons.  Cataracts can be caused by a disease, old age, genetics or even trauma to the eye.  They may be present at birth or as they develop, usually between one to three years old.  WebMD.com notes that cataracts are often associated with diabetes.

How much does cataract surgery for a dog cost?

On average, this surgery can range anywhere from $1,400 to as much as $3,900 for both eyes.  The cost of this surgery is going to greatly depend on the veterinary ophthalmologist performing it, the location, as well as the complexity of the situation.  Cataracts are removed by board-certified veterinary ophthalmologists.

The Cornell University Hospital for Animals, for example, explains the entire procedure and charges $3,500, inclusive of the preliminary analysis, ERG and ultrasound scans, hospitalization, medication, surgery, anesthesia, and the operating room.

Cataract surgery for a dog overview

Most vets, before the surgery begins will consult with you to explain what needs to be done prior, during, and after the surgery to ensure that your dog has the best experience possible.  During this consult, they may want to perform a complete physical examination and take two blood tests, one being a complete blood count and the other will be a chemistry panel.  A urinalysis should also be performed to make sure the dog is a suitable candidate and to confirm the diagnosis.

Before the surgery, the vet will perform an electroretinography, known as an ERG and an ultrasound.  The ERG will access the retina, while the ultrasound will be able to look at the retinal detachment.  If the retinal function is deemed to be poor or detached after the ERG, the vet may not perform the surgery.

Three to five days before the surgery begins, the vet will have you administer medication at home, designed to help your dog’s eyes prepare for the surgery.

During the procedure, the dog will be placed under a general anesthesia, and the vet will replace the bad lens with the intraocular lens implant using advanced anesthetic agents and monitoring.  A slight incision will be made in the top corner of the dog’s eye and a small circular portion of the clear lens capsule, which surrounds the cataract, will have the lens fibers removed.  Once these fibers are removed, the artificial lens will be placed inside the lens capsule and the surgical incision, usually less than a half centimeter, will be closed.   The surgery will take about 30 to 45 minutes and the general anesthesia will wear away at 60 minutes.

9 times out of 10, this surgery works, but there is the rare case that the implant does not take.  Most dogs will have to stay at the vet’s office for three to five days to monitor its progress.  The dog should be able to see well about two to three weeks after the surgery has been performed.

After the surgery, the cataract won’t come back because the lens fibers will be removed during the surgery.  In some cases, however, scarring of the capsule surrounding the lens may experience cloudiness.

What are the extra costs?

Depending on the vet’s billing procedure, additional bills may be sent for operating room usage, anesthesia, surgery, ultrasound scans, hospital stays and for the preliminary exam.

After the procedure, the dog will require a combination of pills, eye drops and ointments for up to six weeks after the procedure.  The vet will also want to see the dog at least two times to monitor its progress and remove the eyelid sutures.

The dog will be required to wear either a cone or e-collar, which may or may not be included in the surgical costs.

Tips to know:

The risks, while seen in less than 10 percent of surgeries, can include scar tissue, corneal ulcerations, corneal scarring, glaucoma, retinal detachment, and intraocular infection.  Many vets also warn that an animal can die under general anesthesia.

Dogs that tend to need this surgery include Golden Retrievers, Labradors, German Shepard, and many of the Terriers breed.

A majority of the time, cataracts are present at birth and inherited or acquired — meaning it’s simply in their genes.  Cataracts can also become hereditary and can develop later in life.  Most vets have found that it can develop around 8 years old.

This type of surgery is going to be considered a “quality of life” surgery, not a life-saving surgery, so don’t feel as if you have to get this accomplished in order for your dog to live a longer life.

To date, there are no known medical drops that can successfully get rid of cataracts.

How can I save money?

If you’re getting this surgery done, it’s best to talk with at least two to three different vets to compare prices, opinions and veterinarian skills.  Remember, when it comes to your dog’s health, cheaper is not always better.

How Much Does the NASM Certification Cost?

The National Academy of Sports Medicine, or NASM, is a certification, accredited by the NCCA, personal trainers can acquire to boost their credentials.  On the market, there are three options:  ACE, NASM and ACSM, and most personal trainers prefer this certification because of the recommendations, acceptance by gyms and the course material.  The organization has been around since 1987 and boast more than 100,000 members.

How much does the NASM certification cost?

When signing up for a NASM certification, there are four packages you can choose from on the official website.  Each package will have its own inclusions, which we will talk about below, but for the most part, the self-study option will cost $699; the premium self-study option will cost around $700 to $900; the guided study will cost about $1,000; and the all-inclusive package will cost close to $1,300 to $1,800, depending on the promotion being held.

Attending workshops live can cost $1,500 to more than $2,500.  For example, courses can be held at various Lifetime Fitness facilities across the United States, and like the self-study options, the live workshops will work just like a classroom, where you will show up on a schedule to meet with your instructor.  The average class will meet a total of 15 hours per week.  These courses allow you to work side by side an experienced instructor and even work with real-life clients.

Nicole over at pumpsandiron.com said she went the $699 route because she did good at school and didn’t mind studying on her own.  She also explains first hand what she did and didn’t like about the program.  Julie at PBFingers.com did the same thing and paid $699.  She said the extra $40 was worth it for the pro option since it provided access to study materials. She also goes in depth explaining what you should pay attention to when studying for the exam.

NASM certification overview

As stated above, there are four packages you can purchase from the official NASM website:  the self-study, premium self-study, guided study and all inclusive package.  The self-study option will be the most basic option and will include the CPT exam, textbook, virtual lectures, exercise library, learning modules, client scenarios and quizzes.  As the packages go up in price, more features will be added.  The premium self-study will include two times more material, while the guided study will have a live workshop, one on one help and an exam prep guarantee.  Lastly, the all-inclusive, the most expensive option, will include all of the inclusions mentioned prior and a retest voucher, job guarantee and access to the development program.

When ready to test, the official test must be taken at an official testing center.  On the test, there will be 120 questions and you will have two hours to take the exam.  The exam will cover assessments, exercise techniques, program design, nutrition, client relations, professional responsibility and research questions.

The NASM is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies and is this is known to be heald as the standard for the field.

What are the extra costs?

When you enroll, you must take the exam within 180 days; however, you can pay an additional $75 to extend the limit by 90 days.  If you don’t plan on focusing for next six months, then it’s highly recommended you wait.

Outside of the enrollment fees, many students purchase study guides and/or practice tests.   While the package does include practice tests, some people argue the test doesn’t reflect the actual exam.  Practice tests, if purchased, can cost about $20 to $40.

You must be CPR/AED certified before taking the exam.

If your package doesn’t include a retest voucher and you fail the first time, you will have to pay $199 to take the test again.

Your certification will expire every two years and to be certified, you will have to provide proof of continuing education credits, which can cost about $99 per credit.  The NASM estimates about $400 plus the fee to keep your certification active.

The organization offers other certifications that relate to mixed arts conditioning, golf fitness, women’s fitness, fitness nutrition and youth exercise.

How Much Does Cancer Treatment for Dogs Cost?

Cancer treatment for dogs includes a series of procedures used to treat or remove cancer cells that form over time.  Normally, about 50 percent of all tumors found in dogs are in the skin, while 20 percent are in the mammary glands. 10 percent are found in the alimentary system.

How much does cancer treatment for a dog cost?

The cost of cancer treatment for a dog will depend on so many factors such as the type of cancer, the stage, the severity and the size of the dog if it’s receiving chemotherapy.  There are three common ways to fight cancer:  via chemotherapy, radiation or surgery.  The initial diagnosis with tests, without any treatment, can cost $800 to $2,000.  These high costs will be due to blood work, x-rays and vet visits.

Chemotherapy, which will be a treatment used to attack cancer, just like it would with a human being.  This process will depend on the medication being used, the rounds needed and the size of your dog.  Most dog owners claim they paid anywhere from $5,000 to more than $11,000 for a complete series of chemotherapy treatments, with each treatment costing about $750 to $1,100.

Radiation, another way to fight cancer, will fight tumors that can’t be accessed with surgery because of the complex location.  Radiation will usually be administered two times per week and will be needed for up to five weeks.  Each session will last about 30 minutes and the entire series of radiation can cost $4,500 to close to $8,500.

Surgery, another popular option, will be done if a tumor is present and it can easily be accessed to be removed.  While surgery isn’t going to get rid of the tumor 100 percent of the time, it can prevent it from spreading.  Most doctors will recommend surgery as their first resort and a one-time surgery can cost $2,000 to more than $8,000.

Dogs that have had lymphoma have had total treatment bills that have been in the $16,000 to $25,000 range.

All of the costs mentioned above can greatly vary depending on where you live and the doctor you’re visiting.  While it can be hard to give an estimate over the phone, most vets can give you an “idea” when they are able to assess the situation.

On Dogster.com, one reader shared 10 tips and claimed her overall costs were $10,000.

Dr. David Vail, a veterinary oncologist, says a diagnosis can cost $1,000 to $2,000, while a course of chemotherapy can cost $3,000 to $5,000.  Radiation treatments for nasal and brain tumors can cost $6,000 to $10,000.  He also notes that some types of cancers, such as soft tissue sarcoma, could cost $9,000 once everything is said and done.

Cancer overview

If your vet does suspect cancer, he or she will run a series of tests that usually includes blood work, urine tests, x-rays and a tissue aspirate, which uses a needle to draw a sample from the tumor to be tested.  After these tests are completed, the vet will be able to confirm if cancer is present.

Before a treatment option is even considered after a confirmed diagnosis, a veterinarian will more than likely refer you to a local oncologist, a specialized veterinarian who will be able to create a treatment plan discussing what should be done, the success rate and the recovery period.

What are the extra costs?

Pain medication after all treatment sessions are completed can cost $20 to $150, depending on the medication being prescribed.  For instance, Palladia, a common drug used by dogs, can cost $3.99 for one 10 mg tablet.  To treat a 30-pound dog, for example, three dosages would be needed daily.

Tips to know

Since cancer can come in so many varieties, an oncologist is highly recommended since he or she will have the advanced education to fully discuss your treatment options, the recurrence rates and provide all the necessary treatments to hopefully get your dog healthy again.  CBS News proclaims there are only 300 veterinary oncologists in the United States, so it may be hard to find one in your area.

How can I save money?

If you purchased a pet insurance policy, then they may be able to offer some sort of financial assistance.  This will all depend on your policy and what’s included, so it’s best to talk with them to see what’s covered.  Most of the time, pet insurance policies will only cover accidents and cancer will have to be added as an add-on.  Even if it’s added on, there will still be a maximum they are willing to pay.

Cancer treatment isn’t cheap and to come up with this much money at once can be hard for just about anyone.  Talk with your vet to see if they offer any sort of financial assistance.  Even if they don’t, they may be able to point you in the direction of a company that may be able to offer a low-interest loan.

Search or look in your local area for a charitable group that may be able to help offset these costs.  The Pet Fund is one fund that may be able to help.

Always get at least two to three opinions before agreeing to a surgery.  Many pet owners find that even after the first surgery, a second surgery may be required, and just because one vet is insistent on one treatment, it doesn’t mean there won’t be other options.

Ask for a realistic outcome before investing thousands of dollars.  Even with a successful surgery, your dog, even if the cancer is gone, may only live for another year or so.  If the treatment costs will be north of $2,000, you will have to really sit back and think if the investment is worth it.

Clinical trials may be available if you’re close to a vet school or referral hospital.  These trials may be lower in cost and will help researchers – a win-win.

How Much Does Car Air Conditioning Repair Cost?

A car’s air conditioner will have five main components:  the refrigerant, which is designed to carry the heat; the compressor, which draws in and compresses the refrigerant, moving it along; the condenser, which expels the heat; the expansion valve, which regulates the refrigerant flow; and the evaporator, which will cool down the car by blowing the hot air from the inside of the car across the refrigerant.  Unfortunately, some of these parts can go bad, ultimately forcing your air conditioner to either blow hot air or not work at all.  Since it can be hard for a technician to find out where the leak is coming from, it can take up to an hour or so to know exactly what’s going on.

How much does car air conditioner repair cost?

To determine what repairs are needed, a mechanic will first have to visibly inspect the system to see what’s wrong with.  As stated above, it can take more than an hour to find the exact problem.  Some mechanics, such as Pep Boys, will do it for free with a basic inspection, while others will dig down deep and may charge $50 to $250 to check the hoses, belts and connections.   To do this, the mechanic will pressurize the system using nitrogen to find out where the leak is coming from.

Most problems, which will involve repairing a leak, can be $50 to $225.  According to MSN, 80 percent of air conditioning problems come from a simple leak.  Leaks are able to occur anywhere the refrigerant passes from part to another.  If it isn’t a leak, the common repair can be anywhere from as little as $300 to more than $2,000.

Recharging the old refrigerant is one of the most common repairs and can cost $95 to $255.

Replacing the air conditioner hose could cost $300 to $550, and this repair will often include recharging the freon as well.

A compressor failure, which is the pump that circulates the refrigerant through the system, transferring the heat from the inside to the outside, can cost anywhere from $400 to more than $2,100, depending on the make and model.  If this compressor were to fail, it would have to be replaced.

Contamination is another problem that can occur and this happens when a system is exposed to more than one type of refrigerant.  On the market, there are two common types:  R-12, which is used in older cars, and R-134a, a refrigerant used in all cars since 1994.  If these two refrigerants were combined, it could contaminate the system.  This type of repair would require flushing and recharging the entire system, along with replacing any components that were contaminated.

Car air conditioning repair overview

During most checks, a certified technician will do a system fan level check, they will read the PSI pressure to verify the Freon level, an output temperature check will be performed and the blower fan and the compressor will be examined thoroughly to see if it’s working properly.  Belts and hoses will also be closely inspected to see if any signs of aging or potential failure are present.

To check for leaks, a fluorescent dye will be injected into the system to see if a leak is present.

What are the extra costs?

Vehicles made before 1995 will have to convert from using a CFC-12 refrigerant to an approved substitute.  Depending on the make, model and the age of the vehicle, this can cost anywhere from $200 to more than $700.  While CFC-12 isn’t banned, it’s no longer made because of the effects it has on the ozone layer.

Tips to know

With older cars, once one part goes bad, there’s a good chance other parts are going to go bad at the same time.  So even if you take it in for a repair and have the leak repaired, it doesn’t mean it’s going to work for the next few months without a hitch.  As Lorraine Sommerfeld stated on Driving.ca, she paid $600 to have her air conditioner repaired, but another leak appeared about a week later.

The average car loses 0.3 to 0.6 ounces of refrigerant yearly.

How can I save money?

A/C Pro, a product that you can purchase in most auto supply stores and online, allows you to recharge your air conditioner at home.  This product will cost less than $35 and is a great first step to see if it gets rid of the problem.
