How much does an aloe vera plant cost?

The cost of an aloe vera plant will depend on the size and where it’s being purchased.  On average, plan on spending anywhere from $1 to as much as $30.  A small one-inch to five-inch pot, for example, can cost $1 to $5 at most local nurseries and retailers.  This is the size you will find 99 percent of the time at a local retailer.

Lowe’s, for instance, has an 11-ounce aloe vera plant available in its nursery section for about $4, while IKEA has a similar size for the same price.

From our research, the closer the plant was to the 12 to 17-inch height mark, the more you pay, oftentimes, $20 or so per plant.  These plants can be found online via eBay or at local nurseries.

A seed mix, if you’re looking to plant on your own, can cost about $5 to $10 per 25 seeds.

Looking on Amazon, we had found listings ranging from $10 for a three-inch potted plant to $8 for a packet of 25 seeds.

What are the extra costs?

If the plant doesn’t already come with a pot, it’s recommended you either use a cactus potting soil or potting soil in general to ensure good growth.

While you can fertilize the plant, you don’t need to as they grow well without as long as the proper conditions are met.

Tips to know:

The aloe vera plant can be found at Lowe’s, Home Depot, some retailers, such as Walmart, and your local garden nurseries if you were looking to plant one outdoors.  If you don’t want to purchase in person, you can also find hundreds of listings on eBay or even a wide selection following the Amazon link noted above.

This plant, if planting in your yard, will require full sun and must be spaced, at a minimum, 24 inches apart.   If planting indoors, make sure the plant is near a window, again, for the full sun and the pot has many drainage holes since the plant won’t do well with standing water.  One of the main reasons a plant dies is to due to overwatering or too much standing water.

The aloe vera plant works best in zone 10 and should be avoided in areas where temperatures drop below 30 degrees Fahrenheit.  Since it’s a succulent, it will do best in dryer conditions.

You can pull a leaf off your plant, and when replanted, it will regrow.

If the leaves are starting to curl, it means it needs more water.

How can I save money?

If you need more than one plant, consider purchasing online in bulk or what’s known as “lots” on eBay.  Doing so can bring the costs down.

For those who have the patience, growing a plant from a seed can take time but will be much cheaper than buying the plants already growing.
