Out of all sinks in the home, the kitchen usually comes in as the winner.

Whether it is rinsing the dishes before throwing them in the dishwasher or simply washing your hands, the faucet, unfortunately, will not last forever, and whether you want to change it due to cosmetic reasons or due to a repair, it will come at a cost.

How much does it cost to install a kitchen faucet?

The costs to install a new or existing kitchen faucet will depend on the professional you hire, the type of faucet, the current setup and your geographical region.

If your job is pretty straightforward and only requires a simple swap, then the costs are often in the $115 to $225 range, but for a more complex situation which involves adjusting the water lines and/or making other modifications, then the costs could be in the $275 to $400+ range.  Since most plumbers will charge by the hour, not as a flat rate, be prepared to spend about an average of $75 per hour each hour they are there.  With the average install taking close to 90 minutes or more, even the quickest install will still be billed at the shop’s minimum rate.

While on the surface, the job can look easy, there are some problems that could arise which could make the job harder for the contractor.  For example, rust, a problem often persisting in older faucets, could make it harder to remove, sometimes leaving a contractor no choice but to saw off the older faucet or even calling in another plumber for an additional hand.

Most plumbers will be able to offer you a quote over the phone or even via email if you simply need a swap, and if you want to find the best deal via the most experienced plumbers in your area, then we recommend HomeAdvisor.com to receive multiple quotes for free.  With this tool, you can explain the job and contractors will contact you, for free, with a price.  This is a nice way to save time and only receive quotes from those who are licensed, insured and qualified to perform the job.

TypeCost
Pull-Down$50 to $275
Pull-Out$50 to $275
Pot Filler$100 to $600
Bar/Prep$125 to $300
High or Low Arc$50 to $350

The factors affecting the price

The condition:  A rusted out faucet and/or even one with broken parts will be much harder to remove than one in good condition.  Due to the time involved removing an older faucet and/or the chances of damaging the plumbing lines, a plumber will often charge more as most faucets install jobs are charged by the hour.

Location:  A simple swap and replace will be much less than a faucet that needs to be installed for the first time.

Counter and sink:  If you’re installing a new faucet and the counter and/or sink needs some sort of modification, then some adjustments will need to be made.  Again, charging by the hour, this could increase the costs of the install.  To save on this, it’s best to choose a faucet which fits your exact sink to cut down the costs.

The type of faucet:  Not all faucets are created equal, and in the kitchen, there are a variety of types available, including a pull-down, pot filler, pull-out, bar and high or low arc sink.  As kitchen faucet models tend to be the largest option and often have the most features, this, again, can increase the labor time.

Upgrades:  If you need any upgrades, such as a filtration system or even lighting, for example, this can be another cost to think about.

Additional parts:  A good plumber, when installing your new faucet, will want to replace most of the connecting parts, such as the connectors and mountings.  While these parts are relatively cheap, it could add another $10 to $20 to your total bill if you agree to have them replaced.

Plumbing:  Older plumbing, during the install, may be recommended to be upgraded or changed in case of a leak which wasn’t due to the faucet itself.

Geographical location:  Of course, as with any professional service, your local cost of living will greatly dictate the hourly rates.  A metropolitan city could be up to 40 percent more than a middle of the road town.

How to save money

Replacing a faucet is relatively straightforward and will not require much effort or tools as long as your faucet is in good shape.  These videos on YouTube, for instance, will show you exactly how it’s done, and if done correctly, it should only take two to three hours to perform.

The plumbing industry is quite competitive, and because of this, you can often take advantage of great Groupon deals or even daily deals on Angie’s List.  Before purchasing the coupon, though, just make sure you’re dealing with a reputable and highly reviewed contractor and always make sure you read the fine print to know what you’re getting with the coupon.

In some cases, the big-box retailers, such as Lowe’s and Home Depot, do offer install deals from time to time.
