How Much Does the Country Club of Darien Cost?

The Country Club of Darien can be found along the Long Island Sound shoreline town of Darien, Connecticut, about 45 miles north of New York City.

The Country Club of Darien was founded by Edgar S. Auchincloss, and the property was initially a working farm, which was used as a vacation retreat in the early 1900s. Later in the 1950s, the property became an expensive luxury estate, prompting Mrs. Catherine Auchincloss to expand the estate to meet the changing conditions at that time.

The club was established in August of 1956 with 400 members. After a year, in July of 1957, the first nine holes of the golf course opened for play, with Catherine Auchincloss teeing off the first ball. The members elected a Board of Governors to oversee the operations of the Club, and in 1986, with the purpose of ensuring the continuity of the club even after his death, Mr. Auchincloss made a very nice offer that allowed members to buy the club property. More than thirty years later, the club has gone through changes and renovations to continue to provide its members with excellent athletic and social facilities in Fairfield County.

How much does a Country Club of Darien membership cost?

The cost of a membership, as with most country clubs, will greatly depend on the type of membership you apply for.  With very limited information available, seeing the club is private with its numbers, our research indicated the initiation fees can be in the six figures and the annual dues are well in the low five figures.  The food and beverage minimum, at this time, is unknown.

The club’s 18-hole golf course sits on more than 135 acres, and to tour the course, you can do so via the official website.

Aside from the golf course, the club has a 26 hitting station grass range, a practice putting green, two chipping greens and a small 120-yard driving range. In 2014, the club’s indoor Golf performance Studio was created and equipped with a high definition camera system with the latest motion software and launch monitor to gather data on improving swing performance.  The club offers clinics, lessons, outings and events for members.

The racquet facility includes eight Har-Tru courts and four platform tennis courts. The club offers seasonal clinics and camps, with private and group lessons for members available. The club hosts tennis leagues where members compete. The Paddle hut offers a lounge area with a stone fireplace, a kitchen, an observation deck with a fire pit.

The pool area includes a six-lane pool, diving well and a gated baby pool designed for children younger than five years old.

A fitness center is located on the second floor of the Clubhouse and contains a cardio and weight room.

Dining options include the Pub Room and the very popular Mixed Grill.

What are the extra costs?

Club storage and lockers are additional fees to consider.

Lessons, clinics, and tournaments, available for golf and tennis, for example, can be an additional cost to consider.

Greens fees will apply to guests and members who don’t have golfing privileges.

Tips to know:

The club’s golf course was opened with nine holes in 1957 and was designed by Al Tull. By spring of 1958, the full eighteen holes opened for play. The course went through changes and was later on modernized by golf architect, Dr. Michael Hurdzan, completing it in 2010. It was awarded “The Renovation of the Year Award” by Golf Inc. magazine and rated as one of the finest golf courses in the country.

The club has 350 golf member families, with an overall total of more than 600 families.

The club follows a strict dress code and no cell phone policy inside the club’s premises, except in an enclosed vehicle and some designated areas far from the clubhouse and other facilities.  Be sure to refer to the club’s official dress code policy.

The club offers event venues for different celebrations. The Ballroom with an attached lounge, for example, hosts weddings and large parties, while the Medallion Room has floor to ceiling windows, with a chandelier to add elegance to the room. The second floor has two meeting rooms: the Edgar Auchincloss room, which is good for 24 seated guests, and the Boutique Dining Room, which can seat 14 guests.
