Equinox gym membership overview

With multiple locations throughout the United States, each location will offer its own amenities.  Some may have a pool and hot tub, whereas another location may have a sauna.  As for classes, all locations will have a limited number of group classes available, and members will either need to book the classes online via their app or simply walk in if the class requires it.   These classes include dance, kickboxing, studio cycling, pilates, spinning and yoga, to name a few, but new classes are added all the time.  For instance, at the time of this publishing, they added a pure strength and Firestarter(TM) class.

In addition, each gym will include state-of-the-art cardio equipment, free weights, a childcare center and juice bars.

New members often receive a free training session, some guest passes, a fitness assessment and/or a short massage.  This will all depend on the current new member promotion being held at the time.

What are the extra costs?

A fixed locker and laundry service is available for an additional $700~ per year.

Spa services, which can include facials, massages, waxings, teeth whitening, eyelash extensions and/or microdermabrasions, will be an additional cost for all members.  The Business Insider posted a screenshot of the spa prices at a local Equinox gym in New York City, with prices ranging from $76 for a 25-minute deep tissue massage to as much as $151 for a 60-minute massage.

With members having to sign a one-year contract, a cancellation fee will apply if you cancel before your contract ends  According to members who did cancel, this fee can often be in the $200 range.

Private personal training costs need to be budgeted for if you plan on hiring one.

Tips to know:

Ice-cold, eucalyptus-infused towels are located throughout the gym to wipe off sweat and cool off after a workout.

How can I save money?

The initiation fee, according to most members, is always discounted or even can be lowered if you haggle with a representative when signing up.  While the monthly rates are often set in stone, it doesn’t hurt to try to see if you can get some wiggle room on the initiation fees.

The gym, as you may read online, is quite expensive when compared to other gyms in the area.  Is it worth it?  It’s really up to you to decide.  If you do go gym hunting, however, be forewarned, this gym will more than likely be the most expensive option.

SherSheGoes.com recommends waiting until late January or early February, a time when the company runs the best promotions.

Check with your employer as some companies do offer discounts to the gym.  You can also check with the gym to see if they acknowledge your employer as well.

Decide what you need.  As you can see in our table, there are multiple membership options.  If you know you will only use one location, then it makes sense to sign up for the home club only membership.

Many locations do offer a free trial membership to see if it’s a gym worth joining.
