There are abandoned mansions all over the world. Some date back to the 15th and 16th century. Many in Europe are being restored and repurposed. Many of the abandoned mansions in the United States can be purchased at a fraction of their value due to foreclosure and their state of disrepair and decay. Other damages due to looters, squatters and vandalism make restoration and renovations a little more costly. Although many of the list cost for properties around the world needs investigation, many of the ones located in the United States have listed values. If you desire to purchase a mansion, the prices are more favorable than you may think.

10.  Carleton Villa – $495,000

Listed for $495,000, located in New York, the Carleton Villa was originally owned by William Wyckoff, the typewriter magnate, as a summer home. The villa is on seven acres and has a gorgeous river view. Owned by General Electric before World War II, the home was slated for demolition and materials given to anyone who wanted them. It would cost millions to restore in addition to the listing price.

A castle in New Hampshire owned by Benjamin Ames Kimball, a railroad tycoon, stands empty and can be purchased for $880,000. It is reportedly haunted.

The Beckett mansion in Los Angeles was used as a haunted house and for movie shootings. It was on the market for $1.1 million and has recently been sold. It is beautiful inside and outside. There is hope that the new owner will be able to restore it to its former grandeur.

7.  Mike Tyson’s Mansion – $1.3 million

In Southington, Ohio and listed for $1.3 million is a manor once owned by Mike Tyson, the former boxing champion.

In Florida, there is a $2 million mansion with cracked windows and bullet holes. Khalil bin Laden, brother of Osama bin Laden, owned this mansion September 11, 2001 during the terrorist attacks.

5.  Houston, Texas – $3.5 million

There is a grandiose listing in Houston, Texas with 70 bedrooms and 46 bathrooms setting on 15 acres. For $3.5 million, the purchaser will get 60,175 square feet of living space.

4.  UC Berkley President Mansion – $2 – $10 million?

Once home to UC Berkley president, the Blake House has been vacant since 2008 and deemed unlivable. The 13,000 square foot home and the 10 acres of gardens surrounding it were once considered executive perks. To make the estate livable again will take a conservative estimated $2 million and upward to $10 million.

There is an abandoned mansion in Malibu repossessed by a bank valued at $14.9 million. It was once owned by a Wells Fargo executive before he was fired.

Huguette Clark, a copper heiress, died in 2011 in a hospital room despite owning three abandoned properties. Her estate included -42 room apartment in Manhattan on Fifth Avenue, a $24 million chateau in Connecticut and a Santa Barbara estate valued at $100 million. Although Bellosguardo in Santa Barbara is soon to be opened to the public, the chateau in Connecticut remains on the market.

The combined value of these mansions is $582 million. One of these mansions, Jersey House is on sale for $67 million. The Bishop Avenue locations are considered a social statement of achievement for many were usually sold to foreign investors during political unrest such as the collapse of the Berlin Wall, the Iranian revolution and Chinese recently.
