The average American Christmas tree retails for $30 to more than $150, but did you know some cities spend MILLIONS to decorate and put up a tree? If you don’t believe it, here are 10 trees that cost more than one million dollars.
10. Sofitel St James Hotel in London – $55,000
Sofitel St James is one of the most luxurious hotels in London. In 2010, they joined forces with Baccarat crystal house and the Louis XIII Grand-Champagne to crown a Christmas tree which was valued to be over $55,000. Among its striking features were the 200 miniature handmade bottles fashioned by Baccarat themselves before being filled up with the champagne, Cognac.
9. City Centre in Hong Kong – $1.4 million
In 2010, Hong Kong decided to light up the holidays with a 90 foot Christmas tree. The tree featured over 20 million Swarovski crystals and 200 other ornaments.
8. The Soo Kee Jewelery Store Christmas Tree in Singapore – $1.5 million
This 20 foot tree was decorated with 3,762 beads made purely from crystal, 500 lights and diamonds totaling more than 900 carats. Cumulatively, it was estimated to cost about US $1.55 million and had a total weight of over 6,600 pounds.
7. Ginza Tanaka Jewellery in Japan – $1.6 million
This Christmas tree was a 24-carat gold luxury tree and was displayed at the Ganza Tanaka Shop in Osaka in 2008. It was decorated with over 240 diamonds and pearls, weighing less than 46 pounds. At the time of its display, it was valued at about US $1.6 million.
6. Queen Victoria Building in Australia – $1.6 million
In 2008, Australia shook the world with a Christmas tree that was more than four stories tall. The tree was decorated with 8,000 baubles, 40,000 lights, 400 bows and 1,500 Swarovski crystals. This was not unusual for Australia given that the queen Victoria Building is known to be the home of large Christmas trees every year.
5. Train Station 2006 Berlin Christmas Tree – $1.6 million
Back in 2006, Germany displayed a magnificent Christmas tree at Berlin’s central station, ideally a strategic place so that it could be enjoyed by everyone regardless of their social and financial status. The tree was clad in about 40,000 Swarovski crystals.
4. Takashimaya Store in China – $1.8 million
In 2008, this 15-inch tree was covered in 400 diamonds bought from Australia and South Africa and was sold with a teddy bear bearing a matching necklace.
3. Steve Quick Jeweler’s Christmas tree – $1.8 million
This Christmas tree was decorated with 18 carats of gold and a sprinkling of about 200 carats of diamonds, which made it look like snow.
2. Shogo Kariyazaki in Japan – $2 million
Orchestrated by the flower arrangement artist, Shogo Kariyazaki, this Japanese jewelery store created one of the most expensive Christmas trees in 2011. The tree featured a pure gold sapling, which at that time, was valued at $2 million. The eight foot tree was decorated with hearts, ribbons and flowers all made from gold.
1. The Emirate Palace Hotel Christmas Tree in Abu Dhabi – $11.4 million
We all know how opulent Abu Dhabi is. In 2010, the Emirates Palace Hotel decided to break the record by unveiling an $11.4 million Christmas tree. The tree measured 13 feet tall and was decorated with deluxe jewellery from the Style Gallery, which included emeralds, pearls, diamonds, sapphires and a collection of other exquisite stones.
