How Much Does a McDonalds Filet-o-Fish Cost?

Written by:  Howmuchisit.org Staff

The Filet-O-Fish sandwich is a sandwich often overlooked on the McDonald’s menu.

Created by Lou Green in 1962, the first franchise owner in Cincinnati, it beat out the pineapple and cheese “burger,” Ray Kroc once envisioned as a regular on the menu.  When it debuted, it only cost $0.29.

Tips to know:

For the best tasting Filet-O-Fish sandwich, Clark.com recommends ordering a sandwich without cheese to know 100 percent it was assembled after placing the order.  If you want the cheese, however, ask for a cook-to-order sandwich. Even though it may take up to five minutes to cook, you can be assured it will be hot and fresh.

The filet-of-fish sandwich is topped with tartar sauce, a half slice of American cheese, and a Marine Stewardship Council-certified Alaskan Pollock fish patty on a steamed bun.  Using the same recipe since 1961, a full slice of cheese is considered to be as an upgrade.

How can I save money?

Keep an eye out for special promotions going on at McDonald’s as coupons can commonly be found on the official phone app, online or even in the local paper. Oftentimes, for example, they will have deals where the filet-of-fish sandwich is part of a 2 for $3 or 2 for $5 special with another sandwich.  During lent, the most popular time for McDonald’s to sell the sandwich, 2 for $4 deals can often be found.

My Husband and I went to our local McDonalds after shopping, and ordered 4 fish sandwiches, 2 small fries, and 1 medium shamrock shake. Our Bill came to $25.26. we were shocked. Thought it had to be wrong. We did not order a combo meal. Still shocked that the bill was so much. Won’t do that again. It is Lent and we eat fish on Friday, and at the price we paid, we could have gone to a restaurant and got 2 full fish fries. My husband didn’t want the receipt, and I wish I had it. I still may go to our McDonalds and check the prices.

Can’t understand how 3 fish-filet, one large fry, one large shake, and 2 apple pies could be that much. By the price on computer.. fry 1.89, shake 2.99, pies .99 each. That’s around $7 which makes the fish-filet $5.00 each???????????????? Won’t ever do that again.
