As a generic (Celecoxib) is available, health insurance companies will only cover the generic version, not the branded Celebrex tablet, as is the case with any generic prescription medications on the market, with the average co-pay reported to be $12 to $150. To be certain, however, talk with your local pharmacy, look up the drug costs via the insurance company’s database online and/or call the health insurance company to know what you will be responsible for. With any prescription, your local pharmacy will always prescribe the generic version, even if the brand name is written unless your doctor otherwise states on the prescription pad.
How to save on Celebrex
Coupon via Pfizer: Pfizer, the official manufacturer of the drug, offers a savings card on its official website for the branded medication. If you qualify, as per the company’s guidelines, then you can receive the medicine for as little as $4 per 30-day fill. To see if you’re eligible, you can either be insured via a private policy or not insured at all, you’re 18 or older and you do not have prescription coverage in the state of Massachusetts. For more information, you can follow this link to fill out an application to see if you do qualify.
Assistance: Aside from the traditional state and federally funded program, there are third-party patient assistance programs available which can help with the prescription costs as long as you meet the eligibility requirements. The HealthWell Foundation, for example, helps cover this drug and will award up to $12,000 for families who meet up to 500% of the Federal Poverty Level.
Prescription Coupons: Just like a health insurance policy, online prescription coupons via third-party websites, such as GoodRX.com, can help you save up 80%. Available for anyone, it works just like health insurance — all you have to do is find the prescription drug you need, the pharmacy you want to use, and with that information, you print out the free coupon and present it at your local pharmacy just like you would your insurance card. If going this route, however, you will not be able to combine your health insurance plan with it; you can either use one or another.
Ask about alternatives: Meloxicam, which can cost as little as $5 a month, works in a similar way but can be much cheaper. Talk with your doctor to see if any alternatives could work for your current situation.
Celebrex overview
Celebrex is an anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), specifically a COX-2 inhibitor, designed to help treat mild to moderate pain due to the symptoms caused by arthritis, such as swelling, joint pain, stiffness and/or inflammation. This medication is not designed to cure arthritis; rather, it will help you, similar to a way ibuprofen will help with pain. As long as you take, it will continue to help reduce the pain felt.
Dosages greatly vary by patients, but for most adults, it will depend on the reason why you’re taking the medication. For acute pain, adults often take two 200 milligram tablets a day, for rheumatoid arthritis it’s 100 to 200 milligrams two times a day, and while for ankylosing spondylitis or osteoarthritis, only one 200 milligram tablet is taken once a day. Always follow your doctor’s orders and the directions on the label; never take too much, too little or change your dosage without first consulting with your doctor.
The medication is taken orally and best taken with food to decrease the chances of a stomach ache. It’s also advisable you take with a full glass of water and avoid laying down for at least 10 minutes after taking.
Celebrex side effects
Stomach or an upset stomach may occur as one of the most common side effects, but other side effects, albeit rare, are known to exist as well, including a rise in blood pressure, headaches, kidney problems, a difficult time swallowing, symptoms of heart failure and in some extremely rare cases, it could cause a serious and sometimes fatal liver disease or allergic reaction. If you feel any side effects you’re not comfortable with, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately. This is not a full list of side effects; for a full list, we highly recommend you refer to this FDA guide.
