Goat cheese, often referred to as Chèvre, has always been considered as one of the healthiest cheeses in the world.  It comes with the privilege of being one of the few products that are made from goat’s milk.  After much research, it has been found that goat cheese comes with the least amount of fat, a high source of calcium and the best metabolic benefits.   In addition, eating goat cheese may prevent blood clots and motivate the body to produce healthier enzymes.

How much does goat cheese cost?

On average, goat cheese at your local grocery store is going to cost anywhere from $1 to $4 per ounce.   By the pound, it can be in the $13 to $22 per pound range. The costs will really depend on the quantity, the type, the brand, where you purchase it and the current market conditions.

DRUNKEN GOAT® cheese, for example, can be close to $20 per pound.  This popular type of goat cheese is a semi-firm pasteurized cheese blended with a Doble Pasta red wine.

For instance, a mild and creamy pound of goat cheese can retail for $8, while a gift box filled with three pounds can retail for $60 or more.

At Trader Joe’s, a one-ounce container of fresh Wisconsin goats’ milk retails for close to $2.49., for example, offers a variety of cheese that ranges anywhere from $10 to as much as $20 per pound.

Goat cheese is best known for its distinct white color and flavor and is known to come in many shapes such as a cone, wheel, disc or button.  Selections can range anywhere from a milder taste to a pungent, crumbly disc.  In most stores, it will be sold fresh; however, you can also find it prepared with herbs, pepper and/or olive oil.

Goat cheese is more than just a goat cheese as there are a few varieties on the market, including aged, tomme style, blue, brie, cheddar and gouda.  However, because the cheese isn’t made from a true cow’s milk, it will be known as an “imitation.”

When compared to cow’s milk, goat cheese is known to have less fat, fewer calories, and cholesterol.  When compared to cream cheese, it even has more calcium.

As per the Wisconsin Cheeseman, it can be hard to describe the taste of goat cheese, but those who can explain it, say it has a tart and earthy flavor which can taste slightly different than a cow’s based cheese product.

What are the extra costs?

Due to the sensitivity of this cheese, you may have to pay an expedited fee if you were to order it online.  Depending on the retailer, this could be an additional $10 to $20.

Tips to know:

If goat cheese is exposed to the air for too long, it can dry out, making it lose its flavor fast.  Always keep it wrapped tightly in a plastic wrap or zip-style bag inside a refrigerator when not using.  If stored properly, goat cheese can last two to three months.

Whole Foods recommends pairing goat cheese with a young red or white wine.  The grocery store chain also recommends a few recipes such as stuffed peppers, pizza, rolls, baked chicken or crumbled goat cheese asparagus.

How can I save money?

As with any cheese, the more you purchase at once, the more you should be able to save.  At Costco, for example, a two-pack 10-ounce package retails for about $7.
