How Much Does Toothpaste Cost?

Written by:  Howmuchisit.org Staff

Toothpaste is probably the most important part of dental care, and it’s recommended that you brush your teeth twice a day in order to maintain healthy teeth.

Brushing your teeth is necessary for many reasons.

First, it can help prevent tooth decay and gum disease.  While gum disease may not seem to be a big issue, it has recently been linked to heart disease.  Tooth decay, commonly caused by the sugar and other ingredients found in the food we eat each day, can cause plaque to build up on the teeth.  This plaque is removed when the teeth are brushed properly.

How much does toothpaste cost?

On average, a tube of toothpaste is usually going to cost anywhere from $1 to as much as $5 per four to six ounce tub.  The costs really come down to the brand, the type of ingredients being used, and the size of the tube.

Walmart, for example, offers a wide array of toothpaste products ranging from $1.50 to $4, depending on factors such as brand, size and packaging.

Higher end toothpaste, such as a product containing all-natural, plant-derived ingredients, can cost $8 while one with natural ingredients like sodium bicarbonate costs $5.

There is also toothpaste specifically formulated for kids.  This toothpaste is safe to be swallowed for children who have not yet learned to spit.  This will come in kid-friendly flavors such as bubble gum.  Children’s toothpaste will cost from $1 to $5 per tube.

Toothpaste overview

Toothpaste products can either be in a gel, powder or paste form.  Many of them also come in different sizes, from less than an ounce to seven ounces.

In addition to 20 to 42 percent water, most toothpaste will be made from a variety of components, including abrasives, fluoride, and detergents.  Other components may include an antibacterial agent, flavorants and remineralizers.  If it’s considered a herbal/organic toothpaste, such as the Tom’s of Maine brand, then the ingredients may include baking soda, aloe, eucalyptus oil, myrrh, plant extract (strawberry extract), and/or essential oils.  Organic toothpaste usually won’t contain any fluoride or sodium lauryl sulfate.

What are the extra costs?

Of course, in order to use the toothpaste, you are going to need a toothbrush.  Toothbrushes can come in many varieties with different shapes and strengths.  They can also be electric or manual.

Along with brushing, dentists recommend that you floss twice a day.

Tips to know:

Dental professionals recommend choosing a variety of toothpaste that contains fluoride and has the seal of the American Dental Association.

Choose toothpaste that contains natural components and fewer chemicals.  Be sure to check the label for the list of ingredients.

How can I save money?

Buy directly from the manufacturer.  Some toothpaste makers offer significant discounts through the use of coupons provided to customers who shop at their online site.

Purchase toothpaste products at drugstores rather than at grocery stores.  There are a number of drugstores that often put various toothpaste products on sale to attract customers to their store.  They usually offer these items for anywhere from 75% to 90% less than those in grocery stores.

Take advantage of printable coupons offered online by store chains.  They can often be used on top of discounts offered in their physical stores.

Buy in volume.  Many manufacturers and dealers sell toothpaste at prices 30% lower when purchased in bulk.

When buying online, look for products with free shipping offers.

Consider making your own toothpaste.  According to DIYNatural.com, all you will need is baking soda, sea salt and peppermint extract.  When done right, it can cost as little as $0.63 per five ounces.

Check out the local dollar stores as they often have name brand packages from top companies.
