How much does dorsal hump removal cost?

The cost will all depend on where you live, the doctor performing the procedure, the complexity, your personal situation, the time spent, and where you live.  Without insurance and so many factors, the costs, from what we had researched, were inside the $4,500 to $10,500 range.

According to the doctor responses on  Realself.com, for instance, most stated the price for nose hump removal surgery would be around $5,000 to as high as $8,000 without insurance.

On Drsimoni.com, they state that their prices for their operation for a nose job would be around $7,500 to $8,000.

Since this often deemed a cosmetic procedure, medical insurance will not usually cover it.  However, if this surgery is being done for a medical reason, such as trauma to the face, it is best to talk with your insurance company to get more information.

The estimates above should, at a minimum, include the following: operating room, the anesthesia, and the surgeon’s fee for performing the surgery.

Dorsal hump removal overview

Before the surgery is even considered, most doctors will want to use computer imaging to demonstrate what a hump removal can do in your situation.  Since each individual is different, one may need very little surgery, while another may need their cartilage trimmed.

Lamparti Plastic Surgery, for instance, says some humps are limited due to the upper bony portion of the bridge, whereas other people may have excess cartilage.

The basic approach that most doctors will use for nose hump removal is what’s known as an “open approach.”  This is a process where the hump reduction is done laterally or from the side of the nose.  The separation then happens from the upper laterals and the septum.

After the initial incision and separation, the prominence of the dorsal hump is reduced to the desired size in terms of the picture you have chosen or have discussed prior.  This is usually done by simply shaving away the bone until the desired shape has been achieved.  Nasal bones are then reshaped according to the open area.  Some people often consider the reshaping as the act that is similar to breaking the bones, and in fact, the nose, often times, has to be fractured to create a normal bridge.  Incisions are then placed with the tiniest sutures possible to make the area less noticeable.

If the nose hump removal surgery is done as a result of trauma to the face or an accident, it may need to be done using different procedures.

What the extra costs?

Medications for pain and to prevent infection are normally considered additional costs that you should expect after the procedure.

All clinics will have their own billing practices.  Some include a majority of the fees in the quoted price, while others bill things, such as anesthesia, the use of the operating room, hospital, and surgeon fees, separately.  Be sure to receive an itemized bill ahead of time to know what you will be responsible for.

Tips to know:

After the surgery, the nose will be very tender and you will most likely experience bruising on your nose and under your eyes for the following eyes.

How can I save money?

Technically, cosmetic surgery is not included in the coverage of most health care providers.  However, if you are lucky enough to find a surgeon that will do it for other purposes other than beautifying your face, then you may be in luck.  For example, if you need sinus surgery, some surgeons can work on the hump after they work on the sinuses.

Most doctors will offer a free consultation.  If you have a handful in your area within driving distance, then it’s best to get as many opinions and quotes as possible.  When receiving the quote, always make sure you get an itemized list to know exactly what you’re getting with the quote.  Some doctors, for example, won’t include the facility fee or anesthesia.  If you can’t pay the bill in full, then be sure to let the staff know to see if they can help with payment plans or offer financing options.  When choosing one, always make sure they are board certified.
