An embryo transfer is a procedure done to multiply the number of cattle to expand either the herd or meet market demands. It can also be done if a farmer wants to use the best bulls for their best cows.  This makes it easier for cattle herders to double the number of cattle they can produce since most females will only produce one calf per year.

An embryo transfer, if done correctly, can produce up to 10 or more calves per year from their prized cows, profit from increased sales and even extend the life of some older cows.

How much does an embryo transfer in cattle cost?

On average, the costs can range anywhere from $300 to $600 per recipient when everything is factored in, with $200 to $500 of that for the flush and another $30 to $75 to transfer the embryo.  This price, most of the time, is going to widely vary depending on where you live, the number of embryos being harvested and professional you choose.

Agtech, for example, lists its prices on its website.  According to the pricing list, the donor flush costs will be $200 per donor collected, while each transferable embryo produced with another would cost $28.  This price, however, can change due to the ever-changing drug and supply costs and will not include the semen or management costs.

Members on CattleToday.com talked about this question, and they said it could, on average, cost anywhere from $400 for the flush to about $50 for the transfer.  Then, on top of this fee, you will have to consider the drugs, semen and even boarding.  Another member said she was billed $173 for a bottle of Lutalyse, a bottle of Mutimin and one embryo transplanted.  They had said if you’re paying close to $400, it better be from an outstanding cow.

Ovagenix.com says, today, the prices for a cow embryo transfer can be $125 to $150 per embryo, and centers can be $400 to $700 higher for a high-quality cow.

Transferring the embryo, according to the Cattle Network, will require two components:  The first component will generate and flush the embryo from the donor female and transfer each embryo into a different female that will gestate and give birth to that fetus.  These two components, however, don’t have to be done by the same producers.  The end result can then be produced so that someone else can purchase them and transfer into his or her females.  Selection will be the most important decision since a donor female will need a superior genetic history to demand a high price on the market.  This ideal genetic history will have a regular estrous cycle, beginning at a younger age and will routinely conceive no more than two breedings, free of disease.

Basically, the donor cow will be inseminated three to four times, and seven days afterward, the uterus will be rinsed out to extract the embryos.  During the flushing, a Controlled Intravaginal Drug Release will be inserted to help the cow produce a hormone that makes it think it’s pregnant.  Following this, injections will be administered to cause the cow to cycle.  After all the injections have been done, the Controlled Intravaginal Drug Release will be removed and the cow will be monitored until they show signs of being in heat.  Once in heat, the cow will be inseminated a few times, and about a week later, the embryo will be flushed, isolated, frozen and then inserted in a cow in the future.

On average, a donor cow can produce about six embryos per flush, but it will greatly vary based on the cow’s age, environmental factors and semen being used.

After the flush, donor cows will show heat anywhere from one to two weeks afterward.

What are the extra costs?

Freezing, if necessary, can be an additional $40 to $65 and another $50 to $100 to thaw and transfer.

Mileage, if the professional has to travel to your location, will often charge by the mile, unless specified in the original quote.  This is often $1 to $2 per mile.  If, for some reason, a qualified professional isn’t available within your area, then you may have to ship your cow to a center or consider the shipping fees if the center allows it.

As noted above, the price quote mentioned will not include the drugs, semen and boarding if required.  Drugs alone can cost about $200 per donor.

The more qualified a donor is, the more you may have to pay for the flush/transfer.

If a cow has a history of calving problems, then an ultrasound may be required to dismiss the possibility of a problem and/or to determine the best time to flush.

Tips to know:

A donor cow, in order to be flushed, on average, should be at least 60 days postpartum before starting or 70 to 100 days into lactation for a dairy cow.

How Much Does EMDR Therapy Cost?

EMDR therapy, short for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a type of psychotherapy developed by Francine Shapiro.  This procedure is used to treat trauma that is induced by negative life events such as abuse, addiction, anxiety, anger management, depression, phobias, PSTD, stress, trauma and more.

Originally, it was thought that eye movement had an effect on unpleasant thoughts, but today, research has told us otherwise.  After successful treatment, negative beliefs have been reformulated, anxiety symptoms have been reduced and negative beliefs can have slowly dissipated.

How much does EMDR therapy cost?

Generally, the price will come down to the number of sessions needed, where you live and professional who is doing the therapy.  On average, plan on spending anywhere from $100 to $250 per hour/session, and each session, on average, should last upwards of one to two hours.  Keep in mind that multiple sessions will be required, and each session will be a separate charge, bringing the total to $800 to $2,000, on average, to see desirable results; however, each person will be very different, so, for instance, someone may find a few sessions can seem like it’s working, whereas someone else may need multiple sessions to see a difference.  If further issues arise while sessions are being performed, especially if it’s a complex one, then it could take months or even years to see any progress.  Some therapists will charge per session, while others will charge by the hour.

Dr. Faith Cohen, according to her website, says the average 90-minute session in Boulder, Colorado, is about $150 to $250.

EMDR therapy overview

During the average session, you will focus on disturbing material in brief doses while focusing on an external stimulus such as a hand tapping or an audio stimulation.  This, in turn, according to Dr. Faith Cohen, will use a protocol incorporating three main components:  First, the past events often set a pattern for continued dysfunction by making new assertions with adaptive information.  Secondly, the current circumstances you’re facing will bring about distress, which helps the therapist target it and help desensitize it.  Lastly, the imaginative future events will then be targeted to help you gather new skills to fight and adapt.

EMDR will, again, depend on the patient’s situation.  According to research, EMDR has been shown to be effective in sessions ranging anywhere from three to more than 10.  As stated above, the more complex the situation can be, such as childhood trauma or neglect, the more sessions you probably will need.   Regardless, this shouldn’t be seen as a one-session cure.

EMDR is broken down into eight sessions…

During the first session, the therapist will learn about your history, take an assessment of your memories, experiences and explain how the upcoming phases will work by creating a detailed treatment plan.

The second phase will teach you how to reduce stress by showing you certain techniques and ensuring you have multiple ways to deal with your stress.  These techniques, in turn, can be used in between sessions at home.

Phases three through six, once a target is identified, will be processed by using the EMDR techniques.  This, according to EMDR, will involve identifying the vivid visual images related to a memory, a negative belief about yourself and related emotions and body sensations.  In addition, you will be asked to identify a positive belief to help reduce the distress when thinking of a negative image.

Phase seven will involve closure, and your therapist will ask you to keep a log throughout the week to document any problems that may arise.  It can also help serve as a reminder of the activities you have learned throughout the session.

Lastly, the last phase — phase eight — will take a look at how far you have progressed.  The treatment plan will process all historical events, current indicients which may illicit stress and future events which may trigger responses.

If considering this type of therapy, be sure your practitioner is certified.  A certified practitioner, who often invest 28 hours of training, will be deeply invested and will understand the new techniques in EMDR.  In addition, Martin Cohen says a certified EMDR practitioner will utilize it regularly and can have more real-time experiences because of it.

EMDR therapy side effects may include distressing memories emerging, a high level of emotion and/or dreams or feeling emerging after sessions have been performed.

How Much Does Anesthesia Cost?

Anesthesia is used to control pain during a surgical procedure and will help control your heart rate, blood flow and blood pressure.  When administered, anesthesia will help relax you, block the pain, make you forgetful and/or make you unconscious for the surgical procedure.

How much does anesthesia cost?

On average, the cost of anesthesia without any sort of insurance will vary anywhere from as little as $200 if a local anesthesia is administered at a doctor’s office for a simple procedure to as much as $3,500 for a complex surgery at a regional hospital.  The costs, in the end, will depend on where you live, the hospital/doctor’s office and the procedure you undergo.

To put things in perspective, anesthesia will be charged based on the “units” required, and each unit will last for about 15 minutes.  Units can vary anywhere from $50 to $70.   The more complex a surgery is, the more units it will require.  For instance, a bypass surgery could take up to 20 units while getting your wisdom teeth removed can take less than six.

If you have health insurance, there is a fairly good chance that your policy will cover a majority of the cost of anesthesia as long as the procedure is deemed medically necessary.  You should only be responsible for your deductible or copay.

Divifersied Professionals wrote about the costs of anesthesia and said the costs really come down to this formula:  (Base Units + Modifying Units + Time) x Conversion Factor = Anesthesia cost.  The article notes the time, complexity of the surgery and the general health of the patient will be a pricing factor as well.  A colonoscopy, for instance, could cost $300, whereas a minor joint surgery could cost $400.

The total anesthesia costs will often include the provider fee and the hospital fee, which covers the cost of the equipment necessary for the procedure, staff, supplies and medications.  General anesthesia, on the other hand, will be calculated on a base unit, as specified above, and the value, again, will be determined by the surgical procedure.  On your bill, you will often see your anesthesia billed by the minute and then converted into units.

Types of anesthesia

General

General anesthesia, the most common type used for surgery, will be administered by either dispersing gas through a mask and/or intravenously.  This allows the patient to feel unconscious during the procedure.

Regional

Regional anesthesia is a numbing agent that is given to the patient, usually in the spine or near a cluster of nerves, causing the body to become numb while the patient remains conscious.  A spinal block, peripheral nerve block and epidural are all examples of a general anesthesia.

Local

Lastly, with a local anesthesia, only the area being focused on during the procedure is numbed to prevent the nerves from sending pain signals to the brain.

Tips to know:

A question that’s often brought up is the difference between IV sedation vs. a general anesthesia.  To clear things up, general anesthesia allows your anesthesia provider to control your breathing with an endotracheal tube, while when under IV sedation, you are breathing on your own.  Talk with your doctor as each anesthesia has its own uses and will depend on how your surgeon and anesthesia provider work together.

Anchors are commonly made from galvanized stainless steel and will have different designs which can be useful for various types of sea vessels and situations.  Smaller boats will have anchors that range anywhere from one to five pounds, while larger boats can anchors that weigh more than 30 to 100 pounds.  Oil rigs and freighters will use anchors that weigh up to 50,000 pounds.

Before you buy an anchor, you will need to do some research and determine the right anchor for the type of boat you will be using it.  You do not want to get something too heavy nor do you want to get something that is too small.  Smaller boats that are smaller than 15 feet, for example, should have an anchor that weighs at least three pounds.

How Much Does an EMG Test Cost?

An EMG test, short for electromyography, is a test performed to evaluate the electrical activity produced by the skeletal muscles.  This test can help identify whether or not a person has a neuromuscular disease or a motor control disorder such as carpal tunnel syndrome or muscular dystrophy.  A routine blood test or x-ray will not be able to identify most of these muscle diseases, and this test will be recommended if a patient is having trouble with his or her muscles and/or nerves.

How much does an EMG test cost?

On average, without any sort of insurance, plan on spending anywhere from $450 to $1,200 per extremity.  As a general rule, the more extremities that need to be tested, the higher the costs will be; however, the price can go down if extremities were bundled during one test.

If you have any insurance, this test will more than likely be covered as long it’sits deemed medically necessary.  If this were the case, you will be responsible for your co-pay, deductible, etc.  Most who are covered by insurance will pay about $10 to $375+ per extremity.

According to one forum member on DISBoards.com, she was billed $1,425 for a wrist EMG test, with her being responsible for $600 of it after insurance kicked in.  Another member on the same forum thread said she was quoted $1,400 f0r her legs and arms.

Members on aboutbfs.com discussed this very question and said it had cost them about $900, but insurance paid for most of it.

In some circumstances, your primary doctor may not be able to perform an EMG test and will refer you to a neurologist or physiatrist.

Most tests are going to take less than 90 minutes to complete per extremities. The nerve conduction part will take longer than the needle portion since the physician will need to take calculations and measurements.

During the test, you will be asked to lay down on a table, next to an EMG machine, and the EMG will evaluate the state of the nerves.  There are two parts of the EMG: the nerve conduction and needle study.  During the test, electrodes will be taped to the skin to help stimulate the nerve and record the response.  The needle exam will be inserted into the targeted muscles to pick up the electrical signals.

The physician who performs your test should be able to read the results for you; however, these results may not be ready right away, so you may have to go back to discuss your test results in the future during a follow-up appointment. Otherwise, the results can be sent to your family doctor.

 What are the extra costs?

If the results can’t be determined at the day of your appointment, then you will need to more than likely schedule a follow-up appointment with your primary doctor to discuss these results.  Even though the physician performing the test can have a general idea of the findings, the full results will contain the calculations and measurements performed after the test.  Therefore, to calculate these calculations and measurements, it can take up to 48 hours to complete, but in some extreme cases, while rare, could take longer.

Tips to know:

According to teleemg.com, there are very few preparations that need to be done on your part.  Unlike other laboratory tests, you won’t need to fast, and you will be able to drive yourself to and from the testing site, so you won’t need a friend or family member to help you.  With few exceptions, you can still continue to take medication unless ordered by your physician.  For example, if you were taking a blood thinner, then the lab would need to know about it before inserting a needle since it may cause bleeding within the muscle.

Does an EMG hurt?  Those who have had the test say there is some discomfort when the needle electrodes are inserted and will feel similar to that of a shot.  You may feel sore for a few days after.

How Much Does an Emission Test Cost?

An emission test is a procedure where a vehicle is subjected to a series of test that will determine if the smog released by a vehicle meets the city standards.  This is necessary to make sure the air does not get polluted.  This is one of the government’s initiatives to clean the air, and those who fail the test won’t be able to get their car registered with the state.

How much does an emission test cost?

Emission testing is done before a vehicle is registered or if it is necessary for other reasons.  The procedure will be done in emission testing center and it can cost differently depending on the state you live in.  Not all states in the United States require this testing.  On average, the cost to have an emission test done is going to vary anywhere from $10 to $30.

For example, in the state of Washington, you can visit Washington Vehicle Emission Check Program as they provide emission testing centers in five counties.  The price, according to the state’s official website, can range anywhere from $15 to $20.

In the state of Connecticut, it can cost $20 to $25.  If you are in Colorado, it can cost anywhere from $15 to $25.

What is going to be included?

During the test, an inspector will use a computer to make sure that your car is up to par with emission standards.   The test will examine the catalytic converter, the exhaust, and evaporative emissions.  The test should take no longer than 20 minutes.  Also, during the test, the inspector will also look for any sort of error code the computer may show.  If any errors are noted, the car will fail the test and all problems will have to be fixed.

All states will have its own requirements in regards to which cars need to be tested.  For example, in Arizona, a car that’s a 1968 model or older will have to be tested.  In Nevada, the car must a 1975 or older.

How Much Does an Emu Bird Cost?

An Emu is very similar to the ostrich and are native to Australia but can also be seen in other countries.  The birds are flightless and can reach up to six feet in height and are capable of running 30 miles per hour.

Emu birds are primarily kept on farms and are used for meat, oil, and/or its leather.  Even though there have been efforts to conserve this animal, there are still emu birds being sold.

How much does an emu bird cost??

Finding an emu bird in the United States, at least according to our research, is extremely hard.  If you’re able to find a seller, chicks, three to four months old, can cost $3,000 to $5,000, but one to seven-day-old chicks, if found, can cost less than $1,000; however, finding a chick younger than a week is very hard to find.

Yearling emus can cost $11,000 to $19,000 for a sexed pair, while a pair older than two can cost even more, often as much as $25,000.  If the pair has been proven to be a good pair and breeds well, then this can be near the top, costing as much as $30,000 to $40,000.

In the end, the costs will come down to who you purchase from, the age of the emu, its breeding qualities, the bird’s quality and where you live.  As you can see, the costs could be as little as $1,000 for a chick to as much as $30,000+ for a pair known to breed exceptionally well.

Overseas, the prices are much lower than that in the United States.  In India, for example, we were able to find hundreds of sellers, selling their chicks for less than $100 and pairs for about $500.  AgriSeek.com, the world’s largest marketplace, has hundreds of listings with most sellers residing in India.

If you’re talking about the meat, not a live bird for farming, then it can cost about $30 per pound, depending on the cut.  Fossil Farms, for example, sells two four-ounce fillets for $20 and $12 for a six-ounce steak.

An emu can grow relatively fast.  In fact, by the time an emu turns three months old, it should be able to peak over a four-foot fence, according to Sugar Maple Emu.  Emus, once matured, can weigh 90 to 150 pounds.

An emu’s temperament, just like any other pet, will depend on the bird.  Most will be docile and won’t attack.  Males, generally, will be friendlier than a female, but again, this isn’t always the case because it varies from bird to bird.  Some birds may peck at shiny objects, while another may want to eat and leave it at that.  Some, if extremely friendly, may allow you to hug them.

What are the extra costs?

A six-foot fence, at a minimum, is highly recommended to safely contain your birds.  This fence, according to the experts, should be made of either a chain link or woven wire.  Inside their fenced in area should be a shelter with several inches of bedding material such as chopped straw.  The cost of installing a fenced in area will really depend on much fencing you need.  If using a professional, plan on spending about $8 to $16 per foot.

Emus feed on a low fiber pellet feed per day.  Unless they are able to graze in a field, the average emu eats close to pounds of feed per day.  If allowed in a pasture, experts recommend no more than 20 emus per acre.  Aside from the low fiber pellet feed, you will need to supplement their feed with vitamins and minerals.

Emus require very little in terms of medical attention.  Owners may opt to vaccinate and deworm.

Tips to know:

Raising a chick from a younger age can make it easier to handle as an adult in the future, but as Sugar Maple Emus recommends, “bonding” with a teenager or adult may create a problem since the emu may want to bond with you, not other emus.

Don’t skimp and install a four or five-foot tall fence as this won’t be tall or strong enough to contain your emu/s.  Due to their heights and rate of speed, most will be able to jump over it with ease.

Emus can run up to 30 miles per hour with their three toes and their kick is said to be strong enough to be fatal to a human.  An ostrich, unlike the emu, will use two toes, which enable it to run up to 40 miles per hour.

How much does embroidery cost?

The price of embroidery will depend on the design you want, the item being embroidered, the professional doing the job, the complexity of the job and geographical location.  On average, plan on spending anywhere from $3 to as much as $15 per small piece such as a simple hat to a t-shirt.  This will usually include anywhere from 1,000 to 5,000 stitches and won’t include the item.

The more stitches you need for a particular piece, the more it will cost. For example, larger logos that take up more space, such as on a jacket back, for example, can cost upwards of $30 to $45 per piece. Again, this won’t include the item.

In most cases, a professional will charge by the number of stitches they need to use, and of course, the larger the job, the more you’re going to pay.  To play it safe, it is best to budget $1 to $2 per 1,000 stitches.  Some retailers may also charge by the letter, and if this were the case, it should cost about $1 to $2 per letter, with most stores asking for a minimum payment before they start the work.

The Embroidery Authority, for example, lists its pricing here.  According to the pricing chart, one to five items would cost $8 each with up to 10,000 stitches.  However, the more items you purchase at once, the lower the price drops.  For instance, if you to purchase more than 500 items, then the price would drop to $3 per item.

Another way a company may charge is simply by a flat rate/job.  Using this method, a company may show an example and what they would charge for it.  For example, it may be something as simple as a polo shirt with a business name in the corner.  A polo, with the embroidery, can cost anywhere from $15 to $22, while a hat, depending on the material it’s made from can cost $12 to $25.

What are the extra costs?

A setup fee, no matter how large or small the job may be, will often be charged.  From what we have seen, this setup fee will be no more than $25 on average; however, some may claim the setup fees are “free,” but these prices will be tied into the overall price.  The setup costs will depend on the complexity of the item.

If the company has to design the logo for you, they will most likely charge a design fee as well.  The price will greatly depend upon the complexity of the job.  A simple font will be much less than designing a graphic.

Embroidery jobs, depending on the job size, can take anywhere from three to five days on average, sometimes more.  Larger jobs can take longer.  If you want to have the job expedited, expect to pay a rush fee.

Orders placed online can often incur delivery fees, especially if you don’t meet the minimum order requirement.  All stores will vary, though.

Embroidery that is done by hand rather than a machine can cost significantly more.  If you want the job done by hand, expect to pay 10 to 15 times more than the rates mentioned above.

Additional colors, if you needed more than one color on an item, can be an additional charge.  Most professionals will charge per color, using the estimates provided above.  For example, if you were to need two different colors and each required 5,000 stitches, then you would be charged 5,000 stitches times two plus the setup fee.

Embroidery is not your only option when personalizing clothing.  You can also consider screen-printing, which can sometimes be cheaper.  Most companies that perform embroidery also perform screen-printing, so you can check both prices and make your decision based on the quotes.

A dog tail amputation procedure is the process of surgically removing part or all of the dog’s tail that’s damaged or diseased beyond salvage.  This can be done for a variety of reasons, but it’s most commonly done when a severe wound, an infection or tumor is present.

This procedure is done to prevent pain and suffering by removing the tail or to help prevent the spread of cancer if a tumor were found.  While considered an extreme situation, it will almost always be the last resort taken by a professional vet.

The tail, which is the end of the dog’s spine, is full of nerves, and if your dog were to injure it, it could cause quite a bit of pain, often calling for an amputation.

How much a dog tail amputation cost?

The cost of a dog tail amputation will depend on the extent of the injury, the vet’s office, inclusions with the bill, the length of the stay, if it’s a partial or full amputation, and the geographical location.  On average, this procedure can vary anywhere from $350 for a partial amputation to as much as $1,100 for a full amputation.

Members talked about this very question on Grey Talk talked about what it would cost to have a dog’s tail partially amputated.  According to the thread, members had paid anywhere from $180 to more than $650.

A certified tech on Just Answer said the costs would vary state by state, but she did mention her clinic amputated a dog’s tail for $600.

Before the vet even considers amputating the tail, he or she will take x-rays and/or bloodwork to confirm their diagnosis.  An x-ray will commonly be done if a tumor is suspected or if the dog was in an accident, for example, while bloodwork will be included as well to make sure the dog can go under a general anesthesia.

This procedure, commonly done at the vet’s office, will require a general anesthesia and an overnight stay.  During the procedure, the hair will be clipped around the site of the amputation, followed by scrubbing the area to sterilize it.  Once sterilized, the surgeon will create a skin incision, dissect the muscle, transect the bones and will repair the tissue that was dissected.  Lastly, the skin will be closed and a dressing/bandage will be applied to prevent infection and the dog from licking at the site.  However, if the entire tail were amputated, then no bandage would be necessary.  For the next few weeks, the dog will have to wear a cone until the sutures are removed.

What are the extra costs?

Bloodwork, x-rays and the pre-operative exam can often be a separate bill, depending on the vet’s billing policy.

In the next 14 days or so, you will have to bring your dog in for a follow-up visit to have their sutures removed and to allow the vet to inspect the incision site to make sure no infections are present.  Some vet offices will tie this follow-up visit into their quotes, whereas other offices may charge separately

After the procedure and/or antibiotics, your dog will have to be on painkillers for the next few weeks.  This shouldn’t cost more than $40 to $50.

Tips to know:

Petful says while tumors, if found in the tail, can lead to a challenging surgery.  Since there’s very little skin around the tail, the larger the tumor is, the harder it can be to work with it.  Because of this, some vets will sacrifice part of the tail.

A bulldog tail can suffer from a condition known as “corkscrew tail,” a situation where the tail will grow inward, creating a deep fold pocket that can get infected if left untreated.  While painkillers can help with the situation, some vets may recommend amputated all or part of the tail.

The dog tail amputation recovery time, depending on your dog’s situation, can take two to three weeks on average, sometimes longer.

On average, this procedure can greatly vary anywhere from $800 to as much as $2,500.   The costs will depend on your vet, where you live, what’s included in the bill and the complexity of the surgery.

Vetary.com, for example, says the average cost for a limb amputation can be in the $700 to $1,000 range.  The costs will depend on whether the dog needs intravenous fluids during the anesthetic and/or special nursing care.

Helping Hands Vet, located in Virginia, lists its prices on its website.  A canine amputation due to cancer, trauma or dislocation can cost $755.

Before the amputation, the vet will first want to perform a full examination to make sure this is the right treatment plan.  Depending on circumstances, it may require blood work, a biopsy and/or an x-ray to confirm the diagnosis.  Blood work, for example, can help determine if the dog has any underlying or concurrent health problems.  A chest x-ray, on the other hand, could determine if a tumor is present and if so, if it spread to the lungs.  If there’s a tumor, then a biopsy will be performed to confirm the diagnosis prior to the amputation.

Amputating a dog’s leg will require general anesthesia and will be commonly done at the vet’s office.  During the procedure, the dog’s hair on the leg will be removed and the area will be scrubbed to make as sterile as possible.  The veterinarian will then create an incision in the leg, dissecting the muscles while transecting the bones.  The remaining tissue will then be repaired and closed at the skin, and the remaining stubbed is usually left undressed.  For the next 10 to 14 days, the dog will have to wear a cone around its head to prevent it from licking or chewing at the surgical site.  The dog will stay overnight to monitor its progress throughout the night.

10 to 14 days later, you will have to bring your dog back to have the sutures removed.  At this time, the vet will also check the sit to make sure there’s no infection, redness or discharge.  Depending on the vet, this follow-up visit may be billed or it may be included in the initial quote.

A prosthetic leg, while optional but highly recommended, can cost anywhere from $200 to $500.

Tips to know:

After recovery, be prepared to set up a quiet room for your dog to allow him or her to rest for the next few days.  Your vet will ask you to closely monitor the dog’s surgical site for any signs of blood, pus, or discharge.

Consider looking for a veterinary teaching hospital in your area as these costs are often up to 50 percent cheaper than your local vet.

If you know for certain your dog needs its leg amputated, call a few vet offices in your area to see if you can receive a ballpark estimate over the phone.  Even if you’re loyal to a vet, it doesn’t hurt to ask since your vet may be able to match or come close to a competitor’s price.
