Registration or license fees according to local city and county guidelines.

Early socialization and training is recommended, and to help with this process, obedience classes are recommended.  It’s also been said this breed is hard to housetrain.  At a minimum, it’s best to crate train and teach the basic commands such as sit, stay and lie down.

A regular brushing and professional clipping is necessary to prevent tangling and matting.    The shedding will really come down to the genetics.  A poodle’s coat, for instance, won’t shed, while a Cavalier will have moderate shedding.

The breed is known to have four common color combinations:  black and tan; a tricolor, which consists of red, white and black; ruby red; and Blenheim, which is a combination of red and white.

Life expectancy is said to be 12 to 15 years.

These are very affectionate lapdogs that love to have attention.  Most can adapt to any surroundings around them and prefer to have some sort of human interaction.  It’s best that these dogs aren’t left alone for extended periods of time.

This breed tends to get along with just about anyone that comes their way.  They love to go for walks and get along great with other pets as well.

As for their temperament, they are known to be happy, sweet, gentle, easy going and can make a wonderful companion for any family.

Major health concerns include Mitral Valve Disease, which is known as the number of one killer of Cavalier King Charles.  Up to half of the breed will develop it by five years old and almost all will have it by age 10.  Other conditions include hip dysplasia, loose knee joints, skin conditions and eye diseases.

If left alone for long periods of time, the dog can have separation anxiety, which can lead to excessive barking or growling while away.

Since the dog has the urge to hunt, it won’t be able to be trained while off a leash.

The modern day saint bernards can weigh 150 to more than 250 pounds and measure about 25 to 28 inches tall, with males being about three inches taller on average.

What are the extra costs?

Shipping a dog out of state via an airline can cost anywhere from $150 to $400, depending on the airline and how far it has to travel.

Routine dog maintenance such as dog food, shelter, toys, accessories and routine/unexpected vet visits.  Due to the dog’s size, you will find yourself spending at least three times the amount when compared to a smaller dog.

These dogs tend to shed their coat twice a year, so be sure to brush them on a weekly basis.  Grooming sessions are recommended every month to keep the coat looking healthy and the shedding at a minimum amount.  Refrain from bathing too often since the shampoo can strip the coat of its natural oils.

The dog must be socialized at a younger age due to its size.  While they are easy to train, failing to do so consistently, may lead to unnecessary jumping or improper crate training.  Because of this, experts recommend you sign up your dog for obedience classes to teach them the basics such as sit, heel and stay.  Obedience classes can start at $80 per group of classes.

Tips to know:

Saint Bernards can eat upwards of 12 cups of food a day.

Be sure to train this particular breed as early as possible.  Due to its size, this can be an unsafe dog around children and other humans if not trained correctly.  Most experts state that this dog can be very easy to train as long as they are trained at an early age.

The dog is known to be very loyal, friendly and very powerful.  They are intelligent, and while imposing in size, they are known to be mild mannered.

Separation anxiety is fairly common for this breed.  Those who leave the house often may find the dog will either bark or howl while away.

They are able to get along well with both children and other pets.

All larger breeds, including the saint bernard, suffer from hip dysplasia, heart disease, tumors and skin conditions.  They can also suffer from bloat due to their deep chests.

It’s known to drool and never believe a breeder who claims they have a “dry mouth” saint bernard.

Its life span can range from eight to 10 years, depending on its lifestyle and health.

It’s recognized by the ACA, ACR, AKC ANKC, APRI, CKC, DRA, FCI, KCGB, NAPR, NKC NZKC and UKC.

A long walk each day is recommended in terms of exercise and will do relatively find in a smaller yard.  They have a lower tolerance for hot weather as they tend to snore and wheeze when temperatures are too high.

The AKC says this is the 50th most popular dog breed as of 2017.

This is the dog breed from the movie, Beethoven.

If you don’t mind an older dog, consider checking local shelters or a specialized st bernard rescue group.

How Much Does a Sailboat Cost?

Unlike a boat a sailboat is propelled by the wind in its sails rather than a motor; however, many sailboats have motors in case of no winds or an emergency.  Most sailboats vary in size, and some of the most common sized sailboats are 17, 18, 25, 26 and 27 feet long.

How much does a sailboat cost?

On average, a smaller sailboat can cost as little as $1,500, while a larger sailboat with all the bells and whistles can easily surpass the $400,000 price tag; however, most used purchases should be within the $1,000 to $11,000 range.  Like purchasing a big-ticket item, such as a car or home, it’s going to be hard to give a price since so many variables are involved.   The costs will depend on the brand, its condition, the length, the inclusions and the seller.    For brand new sailboats, plan on adding 30 to 50% on top of the price listed above.  ChicagoNow.com says about two percent of all new boats being sold are sailboats and 90 percent of the boats sold will be less than 26 feet in length.

For example, a smaller 14-foot inflatable sailboat can retail for $2,300 to $2,500, while a 17-foot sailboat can cost $3,000 to $23,000 used.  An 18-foot sailboat can cost anywhere from $5,000 to as much as $47,000 used.

Larger sailboats, 26 feet long or larger, can cost anywhere from $7,500 to as much as $85,000.

Sailboats longer than 36 feet can cost anywhere from $27,000 to as much as $215,000 or more.

SailMentor.com says the most common type of sailboat for sale in Vancouver, Canada is the Catalina 27.  This particular model, if found in good condition, can retail for about $10,000 used.

We took a look at random Craigslist ads across the country and were able to come up with the “average” cost of used boats, noted in our table below:

LengthPrice Average
12 to 15 feet$200 to $5,000
16 to 20 feet$1,000 to $6,900
21 to 26 feet$3,000 to $6,000
27 to 30 feet$5,000 to $12,000

What are the extra costs?

A trailer is going to be required to transport the sailboat from one point to another, and the truck or car that you are going to use to transport it must also have a tow package in order to tow it.  However, this is optional as a sailboat can be stored at a marina year around if the weather permits.  Annual storage, depending on the marina, can be close to $2,000 per year.

Boat registration will be required according to local state and country laws.

Boater’s insurance can cost one to two percent of the boat’s value per year.

Marina moorage or docking dues will be required in order to store your sailboat overnight.  Most city ordinances will not allow you to store your boat in your yard due to the size.   Moorage fees will be charged by the foot and length of your boat, costing about $5 to $15 per foot.

Ongoing maintenance down the road, just like a car, will need to be budgeted for. This can include gasoline if using the motor and routine maintenance.  For example, every two to three years, a new coat of bottom paint will have to be applied.  Captain Gino says you should be prepared to spend about 10 percent of your boat’s value on maintenance every year.

A navigation system is highly recommended and won’t come with the initial purchase most of the time.  A good sailboat navigation system can cost $200 to $1,000+

How can I save money?

Purchasing a used sailboat is the way to go.  Not only are you going to get a great deal, saving up to 60% or more, you’re going to find that if you purchase a newer boat, it’s going to lose its value almost instantly when pulled off the lot.  Check sites such as CraigslisteBay or specialized classified websites, such as Sailboatlistings.com or YachtWorld, that focus on sailboats for used sailboat deals.

If you know of someone else who may want to purchase a sailboat, consider going in on it used to bring down the costs.

If you don’t want to invest in a sailboat but would like to take one out on the water from time to time, consider joining a local sailing club or co-op.  These clubs offer many sailing options and allow you take it out by reservation.

How Much Does Parasailing Cost?

Parasailing, like paragliding, is a recreational activity where a person is towed behind a vehicle, usually is a speedboat, while they are attached to a parasail or a specially designed parachute.  Like flying a kite with a fishing pole, parasailing will use a hydraulic winch that slowly reels you from the flight deck into the air, up to 1,200 feet.  As the ride ends, you will slowly be reeled back to the deck.

How much does parasailing cost?

On average, parasailing can cost anywhere from $25 to as much as $150 per person.  The session on average lasts anywhere from 8 to 15 minutes and some can take up to three people at a time.

For example, PerdidokeyParasail.net offers parasailing for one to three people parasailing at the same time.  They can be taken anywhere from 400 feet to 800 feet, and the prices range anywhere from $50 to $190.

ParasailDestin.com, a company located in Destin, Florida,  offers rides for $25 to $60.  Customers can go up to 800 feet and up to three people at a time.

We looked up parasailing companies in some of the world’s most touristy areas.  Listed in our table below are what some companies charged in that area.

CityPrice Range
Cape Cod, MA$100
Cape May, NJ$70
Clearwater Beach, FL$69 for 800 feet or $79 for 1000 feet
Cocoa Beach, FL$90 for double or $140 for triple
Ft. Myers Beach, FL$50 to $90 per person, depending on length.
Marco Island, FL$75
Marina Del Rey, CA$85 to $95 per person
Myrtle Beach, SC$65 to $85
Ocean City, NJ$75 for 12 minutes
Panama City Beach< FL$50, $70 and $80 for up to four miles.
Pensacola Beach, FL$90
Virginia Beach, VA$85
Walt Disney World$200 for 2

What are the extra costs?

For those who don’t want to go up in the air but would rather watch from the boat, there may be a small $5 to $20 fee.

Some parasailing companies can take up to 50 pictures for an additional fee, usually around $20 to $40.  The same can be said about high definition videos, which can be a bit more, seeing a dedicated person will have to film the entire time.  Combining the two can often lead to a discount.

Tips to know:

When you’re set to parasail, most will launch you around 500 to 800 feet above the water and will commonly travel about four miles.  Depending on the options, some will allow you to touch your feet on the water while parasailing and can handle up to six people at once.  The time is going to greatly vary depending on the company policy, but most rides will be 30 to 45 minutes long.

Make sure the company you’re signing up with is certified by the US Coast Guard and are insured as well.  Ask the company how long they have been parasailing, particularly the captain.

When parasailing, companies will ask you either bring a bathing suit during the warmer months or something a bit warmer during the colder seasons.  Regardless of what you wear, always make sure it’s loose and comfortable.  It also doesn’t hurt to bring a pair of sunglasses and sunscreen.

Be sure to know the weight requirements before paying online.  Most companies will ask you weigh at least 130 pounds and no more than 330 to 350 pounds.

How can I save money?

Try to find friends that will join you in the activity.  Most, if not all companies, that provide this activity offer discounts for groups.

In touristy areas, check for coupons and offers to see who is offering the best deal in town.  It also doesn’t hurt to look on daily deal websites such as Living Social or Groupon.  If you find a company that you like, go to their official website or Facebook page to see if they have any active promotions.

How Much Do Paragliding Lessons Cost?

Paragliding, known as the simplest form of human flight, is a type of recreational and competitive flying sport where the pilot sits on a harness suspended below a parachute or a fabric wing.  It’s non-motorized and requires the flyer to launch by their feet.

Those who want to become a certified paraglider will have to attend a training program that helps them prepare to perform the activity properly.

How much do paragliding lessons cost?

In order to paraglide on your own, lessons and classes will need to be taken in order to become certified as a pilot.  Most lessons are going to range anywhere from $200 for a simple two-day introductory course to as much as $2,300 for the complete P-2 training/certification course.  Once a P-2 certification is acquired, a pilot can fly without instructor supervision.

A P3 course, which is an optional course paragliders take after the P-2, can cost about $2,000 to $2,500.

Most instructors will highly recommend taking a two-day introductory course to give you a taste of this activity.  If you like what you see, then you will be able to fly on your own, with the help from an instructor on the ground, using a radio, in as little as two days.

For example, ParaGliding.us provides different types of paragliding lessons.  They offer a 2-day introductory course, as well as P2 certification course, which is needed to become a certified pilot.  These courses, depending on the classes you sign up for, can cost $350 to $1,650.

Type of CourseAverage Price
1 day course (8 hours)$200 to $350
2 day introductory course$350 to $550
Clinics$400 to $800
Tours$1,800 to $2,500
P2 Certification$1,600 to $2,500
P3 Certification$1,600 to $2,500
Private Lesson$300 to $500 per 4-hour class

Paragliding lessons overview

The basics of paragliding will be learned through the first lessons.  This will include the basics of launching, turning and landing.  Known to be easy to learn, students are often able to perform these activities on their own within the first few days while an instructor communicates with them from the ground.  A beginner area is often used and is referred to as a training hill.  After the basics, which are often taught during the two-day intro period, the student will be able to progress to the Para 2 certification course, which will teach the student about meteorology and different flying techniques and safety procedures.

The training time will all depend on how often the student attends the courses and how they absorb the material.  A student who shows up every day and understands the concepts can graduate in little as two weeks, while a student who only attends classes on weekends and has a harder time understanding can take up to three months to complete.  During the first two days, students will be able to fly solo with instructor supervision; however, in order to acquire all of the skills needed to fly, the Para 2 certification course, which takes up to seven days and about 25 high flights, will be required to be able to paraglide on your own.  The USHGA has a mandated amount of ground school time, flights and flying days before you can be certified.

Paragliding p3 requirements, which is an additional certification a student can obtain after he or she obtains their P2, require the student has a P2 certification, 20 hours of solo air time, 20 flying days and a minimum of 90 flights.

What are the extra costs?

New paragliding gear, according to Paracrane.com, can cost $5,000 for new gear or about $3,000 for used gear that is still in flyable condition.  A new paraglider harness, for example, can cost about $3,000 to $4,000, while a two-way radio and variometer, which tells you how fast you’re going, can cost an additional $500.  Do keep in mind that if you do fly a lot, you will have to replace your paraglider harness every five years due to the harmful UV light from the sun.  Common paraglide equipment purchased includes paragliders, paragliding harnesses, reserve parachutes, variometers, helmets and accessories such as a backpack, paraglider bag and/or UV protector to protect the paraglider when not in use.

Training outside of the classroom may be necessary in order to log miles in the air.  Some classrooms may include this time, while others will charge extra for the equipment rental and time.

Tips to know:

When looking for a school, make sure that the instructor is certified by the United States Hang Gliding Association.  Make sure that you check the ratings of this particular professor with the organization.  The highest rating, according to parasoftparagliding.com, is Advanced Tandem Instructor.   For more information, you can call 719-632-8300.

Be sure to inquire and ask about the student to teacher ratio.  It’s best to get into a class that will be able to give you a lot of one-on-one attention.  Most classes shouldn’t have more than four people.

See what the lessons are going to entail.  Most lesson planners are going to have a full outline of what the student is going to learn.

Check the safety rating of the school and know how many students they have taught in the past.

Under Federal Aviation Regulations Section 103, paragliders are regulated; however, they don’t need a license to operate, seeing it’s a self-regulated sport.  Because of this, the United States Hang Gliding Association makes sure pilots and instructors adhere to the guidelines of the USHCA.

The longest hang gliding flight on record is 474.7 miles.

Paraglider vs hang glider

This is a question often brought up, and while similar, there are some differences as noted below:

The first key difference is the shape.  A hang glider will consist of a sailcloth stretched over a metal frame, while a paraglider simply has a harness suspended underneath a fabric wing.

A paraglider is known to manager easier than a hang glider since paraglider pilots will change their direction and pitch by gently pulling on the paragliding cords that connect to the canopy.  With hang gliding, the pilot will have their body strapped to the glider and will have to manage their direction by using their body weight.

Hang gliders can reach higher speeds when compared to a paraglider, creating a different experience when comparing the two.  A hang glider can reach speeds up to 100 miles per hour, while a hang glider can cap out at about 35 miles per hour.

A hang glider is known to be more durable since it’s made from a thicker dacron material, resulting in less fading; it can last up to 10 years if taken care of properly.  A paraglider, on the other hand, is made from a nylon which can suffer from UV damage faster than that of a hang glider, lasting about five years on average.

As for landing zones, paragliders can land relatively easy since they will come in at slow speeds and won’t need a lot of space to land.  While landing a hang glider can be easy, they will still need more space due to the advanced wings.

How can I save money?

If you are serious about paragliding, consider taking an introductory course to get a feel for what paragliding is all about.  If you don’t like it, you will only be out a few hundred dollars rather than a few thousand.

Some schools will offer a discount if you purchase the equipment through them.

Schools may offer a discount if more than one student signs up for the class.

How Much Does Cayenne Pepper Cost?

Cayenne pepper is a type of spice, also known as Guinea spice, used as a flavoring in food and for medicinal purposes.  The most popular form of the cayenne pepper is its powdered form.  This pepper is generally dried and grounded up into a powder.

The term “Cayenne” is often referred to as a ground pepper, but it’s actually a type of chile pepper that can grow up to 12 inches long, belonging to the Capscium Annum family.  This pepper is long, thin and has a pungent taste.

How much do cayenne peppers cost?

Fresh cayenne peppers can be extremely hard to find, but depending on your geographical location, some may be available online via Craigslist or at local farmers markets for about $1 each.

Cayenne pepper, as a spice, can cost about $1 to $5 per one to three-ounce jar commonly found at a local grocery store.  For example, Walmart sells an eight-ounce container of McCormick ground cayenne pepper for $6.

Buying bulk can cost about $2 to $4 per four ounces or $5 to $8 per pound.  Spices INC, for example, sells a five-pound bulk bag for about $20.

Dried cayenne peppers can cost about $7 to $11 per four ounces if purchased online.  It could be cheaper if it were purchased locally.

Cayenne pepper pills, designed as a supplement, can cost $3 to $6 per 100 capsules, depending on the brand.

Cayenne peppers overview

Cayenne pepper can be either used as a supplement or as a spice in various food dishes and can be purchased fresh, powdered or dried.  Dried peppers are ideal for creating a spicy drink, sauce or adding a kick to meat, eggs, vegetables or nuts.  These peppers will be available year round.

Most spices will come in one, two or five-ounce containers, and sellers may also sell in bulk, commonly coming in one, five, 10 and 20 pounds containers.

This pepper measures 30,000 to 50,000 units on the Scoville scale.

Cayenne pepper is high in vitamins, riboflavin, potassium, and manganese.

Tips to know:

To grow these peppers properly, it’s important to have well-drained soil with very little nitrogen.  If the soil has a lot of nitrogen, it can make the plant too lush, preventing the peppers from growing.

When you want to plant these peppers, consider growing them six weeks ahead of time in a smaller pot.  Grow them indoors and plant them after the last frost of the season.  It’s going to take up to 90 days to bear peppers on the plant.

Cayenne pepper is said to be a great remedy for heartburn and peptic ulcers.

Every once and awhile, make sure that you keep the leaves of the plants clean.  You don’t want to keep soil on the leaves as you’ll find that the leaves can’t get the appropriate sun if the soil is present on the leaves.

These peppers will be the hottest when ripe red.  In the store, look for a raw pepper that has a bright red color and healthy stem.  Also, pay close attention to the body and avoid any that have mold, spots or a spoiled tip.  Be patient and harvest these plants when ripe to get the most flavor.

Cayenne pepper vs. a red pepper:  What’s the difference?  A red pepper can be referred to as any variety of pepper that’s red; however, a cayenne pepper will be a specific type.  Red pepper is often crushed and sold as a blend of spices.  A cayenne pepper is known for its slightly smoky flavor and moderate spiciness, while a red pepper can be milder.

It’s always best to buy these peppers fresh as some sellers may mix a poorer herb when drying.

These peppers will stay fresh for up to one week as long as refrigerated.

How much does a cavity filling cost?

The cost will depend on the material being used, the tooth (front or back), how many surfaces, the geographical location and the dentist.

A single amalgam filling, which is made from a metal material, can cost $75 to $175 per surface without insurance.  Two to three surfaces can bring the total closer to $200 to $300.

Tooth-colored resin fillings can cost $150 to $275 per surface and closer to $400 if two or more surfaces are done at once.  Typically, those who have dental insurance will find it covers close to 50 to 75 percent of the costs; however, this will all depend on the policy.

Porcelain fillings, often referred to as a gold-cast filling, can be the most expensive option since they have to be custom ordered.  These fillings can be up to 10 times more than a traditional amalgam or resin filling, costing close to $1,000 to $3,500 or more.

Your Dentistry Guide says the average amalgam filling can cost $110 to $200 per filling, while a resin-based filling can cost $135 to $240 per filling.

The procedure

A basic cavity filling will remove the decayed part of the tooth and refilling it with one of the filling materials mentioned above.

Using a local anesthetic, the tooth will be isolated, and the dentist will either use a hand drill or laser to remove the decay on the surface.  Once removed, a liner will be used to reduce the sensitivity and will be made from a copalite or dycal.

During a routine filling, as long as nerves aren’t exposed, the filling will be filled, depending on the patient’s choice, after the liner has been filled.  If a composite filling is used, it will require an extra step to match the color to the tooth.

Once bonded, the dentist will use a bonding agent and a blue light to harden it within seconds.  When complete, the dentist will shape the filling to make sure the bite is right.

Types of cavity fillings

Amalgam

Known as a silver filling, an amalgam filling will be made of metal and have been used for years.  This filling will be made from a mixture of silver, tin and other materials and is known to be extremely durable since it’s made of metal.  Unlike a composite material, it will be noticeable since it will have a silver color.  However, one of the downsides is that some people worry if the metal in the mouth, particularly mercury, can be harmful.

Composite

A composite filling will match your tooth’s natural color and may be made from either acrylic, ceramic or plastic.  This type of filling will be great for the front teeth since it will be able to match the natural color, almost appearing as if it isn’t there.  However, these fillings can be costlier than an amalgam filling and can be discolored over time if the patient drinks coffee, tea or similar substances.

What are the extra costs?

Before a cavity is filled, a dentist, especially if you’re a new patient, will want to perform an oral exam, cleaning and take x-rays.  Depending on the dentist and if you’re a new patient, the costs could be as little as $20 to more than $250.

A hard to reach tooth, such as the back molars or an impacted tooth, could cost 20 percent more.  Other complications could increase the price as well.

If the cavity goes too deep and exposes a nerve, a root canal may be recommended/required.

How can I save money?

If you have a dental insurance policy or a discount plan, then the costs will be lower since these plans will often cover the procedure.

If you’re happy with your dentist, still consider getting prices from other offices.  If you find another office is 20 percent lower, bring it up to your dentist to see if they are able to match the price.

Consider a dental school if you’re tight on funds.  While a student will be working with you, they will always be shadowed by an experienced dentist.  Going to a dental school can be one of the lowest cost providers in any geographical area.

Check out local daily deal websites, such as Groupon, to see if any dentist offices are offering a deal.  Since this is a competitive field, many dentist offices offer low-cost deals to lure in new patients.

Highly consider a dental discount plan.  These plans can have an annual fee, usually less than $200, and can knock up to 60 percent off your bill.

Even if you don’t have insurance, it doesn’t mean you can’t save.  Ask your dentist if they are willing to give you a discount if you were to pay the bill in cash.

How Much Does Parotidectomy Surgery Cost?

A parotidectomy is a major surgical procedure that removes the parotid gland,  a salivary gland located near the ear.  This procedure is performed if there is a mass contained within the parotid gland that is abnormal and problematic. These masses are due to benign tumors that are generally painless and can move around easily when manipulated.  Even though these masses may be harmless at first, this procedure must be performed since some of the masses can potentially become cancerous.  The price for a parotidectomy depends on the hospital fees, the surgeon, the inclusions in the bill and geographical location.

How much does a parotidectomy cost?

On average, the salivary gland removal or parotidectomy can cost anywhere from $8,500 to $14,600 without insurance.  The cost usually involves physician, hospital, anesthesia services, and a two to four day hospital day.  The fee, depending on the hospital’s billing policy, should include the hospital stay and surgeon fees.

A member of Patients Forum said she paid a total of $10,000 when everything was factored in.  This included the room and board, medicine, supplies, lab work, recovery room, EKG, physician fees and anesthesiologist charge.

Parotidectomy overview

Before the surgery is even considered, your family doctor will refer you to an ENT specialist to examine the lump.  During this exam, they may recommend removing it just by feeling or may require blood work, a biopsy, a CT scan and/or x-rays to confirm the diagnosis.  While most of these tumors will be benign, some could be malignant, and most will play it safe and will remove it.

During this procedure, the parotid gland will be removed.  Under a general anesthesia, a cut will be made in the front of the ear, usually under the earlobe, and this incision will be made from the earlobe down to the side of the neck to expose the parotid gland.  Once this incision has been made, the part of the parotid gland will be removed.

Depending on the location of the mass, the surgery can take two to three hours to perform.  For instance, if the mass is located below the ear, the surgery could be much shorter than if it were located near the eye and further away from the ear.  According to fauquierent.net, the surgery will take so long because the process involves highly technical microdissection tools as well as facial nerve monitoring.  It isn’t as simple as creating an incision and removing the mass.  Since the nerve that makes the face moves goes through the parotid gland, the surgeon must take the extra steps to protect it.  If he or she fails to do so, a patient may be unable to close their eyes, smile or even make a facial impression.

The recovery period for this particular surgery will take up to two months to heal properly.

What are the extra costs?

Lab work before the procedure, such as a CT scan, biopsy and bloodwork, may be billed separately.

For most hospital stays, outside bills can come from other sources such as the anesthesiologist and doctor.

Follow up appointments will be necessary to make sure the surgery is healing according to plan.  Most doctors will state that it will take upwards of four months to see a full recovery of the removal.  These follow-up appointments may be included in the initial charges, but others may charge extra fees.

Prescriptions will be needed during the healing process.

Tips to know

After the procedure, some patients may feel a stiffness feel in the neck or shoulder area, but it should go away after a few weeks by applying a special skin cream.

Major risks for the surgery may include facial paralysis if the facial nerve isn’t protected during the procedure.  Other risks may include infection and bleeding.

Once the operation is complete, the skin around the neck may become sweaty, especially when eating.  While it may seem troublesome, it can be treated with a simple roll-on antiperspirant.

When choosing any surgeon, find out how many procedures they have performed and how long they have been practicing after their residency.  If you don’t feel comfortable with the answers, it doesn’t hurt to get a second or even third opinion.

How can I save money?

Always check with your insurance provider to see if they can cover part of the cost for the procedure.  As long as it’s deemed medically necessary and the hospital is in network, you should be responsible for your co-pay and deductible.

If you don’t have insurance, be sure to haggle with your hospital.  Reputable hospitals will be more than happy to knock a certain percentage off your bill, especially if you are able to pay cash up front.

How Much Does Caviar Cost?

Caviar, globally known as a luxury food, holds the record as the world’s most expensive food.  It’s the lightly salted, processed eggs of the sturgeon fish, commonly from the Beluga variety.  Since Iran and Russia quit taking wild sturgeon from the Caspian sea, most caviar bought today will come from a farm.

Although people associate all fish eggs as caviar, this isn’t true.  The only true caviar will be harvested from the sturgeon.  If it’s harvested from any different fish, it will be referred to as roe.  As stated on our table of costs below, there are many species which produce a high-quality roe such as whitefish, trout and salmon.

How much does caviar cost?

On average, caviar can cost anywhere from $50 to $3000 per ounce, depending on the species, the quality, rarity, time of year and geographical location.  As noted above, a true caviar is harvested from a sturgeon and there are 26 species on the market, four of which are the most popular:  the Beluga, Osetra, Sevruga and Sterlet.

Refer to the table below for the most common species of caviar and roe, along with the price range.

Alternatives, such as Sturgeon roe, the most common caviar found at local restaurants, and commonly listed as beluga caviar, can cost $200 to $300 per ounce.  Another alternative — the Paddlefish — is a non-sturgeon and can start at $25 to $50 per ounce.

According to the Food Republic, one of the most expensive caviar comes from a 60 to 100-year-old Iranian beluga sturgeon, which sold for close to $1,000 per ounce.

Serious Eats says you should be prepared to spend $50 to $75 for one ounce (30 grams), but the prices can get astronomically high.

Types of caviar

Amur

Known as the Acipenser Schrencki, this caviar comes from the Amur River in China, and is known for its waxy-like shell/finish and unique flavor.

Kaluga

Extremely rare, the Kaluga sturgeon, often referred to as the River Beluga, is closely related to its cousin, the Great Belusa.  It’s extra large in size and will have a milder taste.  This type was banned in 2014 in the United States and is no longer imported.

Osetra

Osetra is slightly smaller than the Beluga and can require up to 10 years before its mature and able to produce eggs.  It offers a medium to large gain and can be lighter to dark in color.

Pacific Sturgeon

Also referred to as the White Sturgeon, this medium to larger sized eggs will have a lighter gray or charcoal colors, offering a milder flavor.

Sevruga

This is the smallest of the Caspian caviar.  Extremely fragile, this caviar will be medium to dark gray and is known to possess a strong quality.

Shovelnose Sturgeon

Also referred to as the Hackleback, the Shovelnose sturgeon is a smaller jet-black, budget-friendly caviar, rich in flavor.

Siberian Sturgeon

Originating from Baerii, this caviar has a deep black color and is small to medium in size.  This is another budget-friendly caviar that offers an excellent flavor.

Sterlet

The Sterlet sturgeon is similar to the Sevruga, but the size and appearance will be different, offering a cleaner finish.

Caviar overview

Caviar can come in two forms:  pasteurized and unpasteurized.  Pasteurizing will slow down the spoilage, similar to how it works with milk, but most food connoisseurs say it can affect the taste and texture.  The eggs will be removed from the sturgeon and soaked in a salt water bring to help preserve the fragile eggs; it can also help enhance the flavors.

There are no regulations when it comes to labeling caviar; however, many retailers may label as imperial, royal, presidential or prestige.  As for quantities, some retailers may sell 1, 3.5 or 6.5-ounce containers, while others offer containers in grams.

What color is caviar? Eggs can range from a gray to a lighter purple/blackish color, and the paler the color is, the higher the price can be since this determines how old the fish was.

Even though it’s a cured fish, it can still be stored for up to two weeks in a refrigerator as long as it remains chilled.  However, it’s always best to consume as soon as possible once the tin is opened.

Caviar is high in cholesterol and salt.  One tablespoon is known to have 42 calories, close to three grams of fat and 250 mg of sodium.

What are the extra costs?

Experts recommend using a pearl or bone spoon instead of metal to preserve the flavor.

Tips to know:

Since 2005, Beluga caviar has been illegal in the United States since it’s deemed an endangered species.  This is considered as one in high demand since it can live for more than 150 years and weigh close to one ton.

Those who have tried it note it for its subtle, buttery and salty taste, while others say a higher quality caviar should never taste salty.   Like a fine wine, the taste of caviar will depend on the region it comes from.

If purchasing local, insist that you’re able to sample it from the tin you’re buying.  That way, you know exactly what you’re getting yourself into.  Also, be careful when buying caviar online and always research who you’re buying from before doing so.  If the prices sound too good to be true, then it probably is.

Most caviar will come from the Caspian Sea, which is bordered by Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Russia and Iran.

How to serve caviar

When serving and eating caviar, experts recommend serving it on a plain base, such as a buckwheat blini and never use metal as this can give an “off” taste.  Instead, use a pearl or bone spoon to keep the flavor intact.

Plain crackers, a challah bread or toasted brioche, along with a dollop of caviar, can be a wonderful experience.

Serve caviar in its glass jar on crushed ice and take out of the refrigerator at least 15 minutes before it’s being served.
