How Much Does a Fan Belt Replacement Cost?

A fan belt is an essential component of any vehicle.  These belts are made of flexible material that connects the engine components such as the cooling fan to the alternator and crankshaft pulley.  These belts rotate when the engine is running, and if you fail to have your fan belt replacement, your car’s engine, alternator, air conditioner and other systems could be impacted, leading to higher auto repairs.

When the fan belt starts to squeak, this could be a warning for failure.  There are many kinds of fan belts that include serpentine fan belts, v-belts, and toothed belts; however, most cars today will use a single serpentine belt as opposed to the v-belt.

How much does a fan belt replacement cost?

The cost of fan belt will depend on the type and where it’s purchased from.  Serpentine belts, for example, can range anywhere from $8 to $50.  V-belts can cost around $8 to $30, but some can cost more than $50. Toothed fan belts can cost anywhere from $6 to $20.  This is the price for the belts only, but most of the time, there’s a good chance you’re spending less than $30 for a belt.

If you were to factor in the professional installation at a local mechanic or dealership, it could cost an additional $40 to $150.  Since these belts can be installed fast, most shops will charge their minimum fee.  With the part included, plan on spending about $80 to $200 to have a new belt installed.

Dealerships can charge anywhere from $75 to as much as $200 for an authentic branded belt.  For example, a user stated that they paid upwards of $120 at their local Nissan dealership for a belt.

Fan belt overview

As noted in the introduction, there are a few common fan belts:  a serpentine belt, v-belt and toothed timing belt.  A serpentine belt is the most common and controls almost every function in the car.  A V-belt, also referred to as a fan belt, will perform the same functions as a serpentine.  Lastly, a toothed timing belt can drive the water, oil pumps and other components.

Belts are extremely simple to install and you’re going to more than likely pay the shop’s minimum fee.  Most belts can be installed in less than 20 minutes.

The process, again, is extremely simple.  A mechanic will simply inspect the belts for any cracks, and if any are found, the belt will simply be removed and a new one will be installed.  Each car will have different parts that may be blocking the access to the fan belt.  The mechanic, at the same time, should inspect the pulleys, seals and bearing for any damage as well.

The belt, which can be referred to as a drive belt, will often be made of a rubber material.  This belt is responsible for connecting the engine to the alternator, air conditioner, power steering and other important components.

What are the extra costs?

A mechanic may often recommend getting other components installed at the same time.  This can include a water pump, tensioner and engine seals.  A water pump, which is driven by the timing belt, can cost $100 to $800. A fan belt tensioner will provide the force to keep the belt tight and can be an additional $75 to $100.  Lastly, the seals can prolong the engine life

Tips to know

Most fan belts are made to last about 75,000 miles or five years, whichever one comes first.  Most mechanics recommend you replace it every 30,000 to 40,000 miles.  Even if you don’t drive a lot, the heat can wear down on the rubber, breaking it down.  The teeth of the belt, over time, can wear away as well.  As the belt ages, it can also develop cracks or the rubber can peel off the belt, creating a “frayed” look.

Warranties are usually included when purchasing fan belts.  Be sure to read the warranty information to see how long it is covered.  It can be anywhere from 90 days to a lifetime.

You will know your belt is going bad when you’re finding it hard to steer the steering wheel or you hear noises when you make sharp turns.  Other signs may include an engine that overheats or an illuminated battery warning light.

If replacing the belt on your own, refer to the part number on the side of the belt.  By performing a search, you should be able to find an identical part to replace it with.

A failing belt will lead to the valves and pistons to not be in sync with one another.  When this happens, the pistons and internal walls of the cylinders can become damaged.  In the worst case scenario, the camshaft can become damaged as well.

Today, most cars have one belt known as the serpentine belt, but some cars may have more than one belt, but overall, the serpentine belt will do most of the work.

How can I save money?

In order not save on the shipping fee, it is much better to purchase the item at a local auto parts store.

To free you from the installation cost, ask a friend to do it or try to do it by yourself if you can.  Check some tutorials online to find out how it can be done.  Most say it’s a fairly simple DIY project.

How Much Does It Cost to Rent a Banquet Hall?

A banquet hall is a large room designed to hold a reception, a party or large social event.  These halls are often located in clubs, hotels or within a restaurant.

How much does it cost to rent a banquet hall?

On average, the cost of renting a banquet hall without any sort of catering or other services is going to range anywhere between $200 and $3,800.   The average banquet hall is $1,244 according to the Bridal Association of America.  The costs will depend on the geographical location, how many people are attending, what you need to be included, the size of the room, setup and the company/hotel/resort offering the hall.

We were able to contact a few hotel chains in our area (Arizona) and were able to get the following prices for 150 people on a Saturday evening.  This was the price to reserve the banquet hall room only.

Hotel ChainCost
Best Western$850
Doubletree$2,000 to $4,000
Golf Resort$500
Hilton$5,000 to $9,000 (talked with two)
Holiday Inn$500 to $1,750 (talked with three)
Radisson$800 to $3,000 (talked with three)
Resort in a higher end area$3,000 ($12,000 option was available)
Westin$3,000
Wyndham$500

What is going to be included in the estimate?

The price mentioned above only covers the rental fee for the banquet hall you booked.

Most banquet halls should include free parking, have an area for a dance floor/DJ as well as a table setup that can accommodate eight to 10 people at each table.

At a minimum, most hotels and companies ask that you rent out the hall for at least four hours.  Each company will have its own minimums, however.

What are the extra costs?

For those who want to have a catering service or use the service within the hall, the catering service is going to start at $8 a person and may be as high as $80 per person.  This will all depend on the food being served and catering company you choose.  If you would like to have an open bar, this will be an extra charge.  This can increase the per-person price by $10-$20.

Every extra hour or amount of extended time can often incur additional costs.

Some halls may charge extra if you need a projector or sound system setup.

Other premium add-ons may include chair upgrades, an open bar, uplighting, extra tables, upgraded linens and security.

A security deposit is going to be needed in order to secure the reservation.  This is going to protect the hall from any damage done.  As long as no damage is done, you will be able to get this deposit back.

If the company doesn’t offer a self-parking option, you may have to hire a valet service at an additional fee.

Tips to know

Pay close attention to the contract to see what fees you will be responsible for.  Sometimes, the pricing will often be listed as “exclusive,” meaning it won’t include the tax or service fees.

How can I save money?

Consider choosing a non-peak time slot to save.  For example, having your event on a Thursday night is much cheaper than having it on a Friday or Saturday night.

One part that can help you reduce the expenses greatly is the food selection.  While deciding on the menu, choose the food items that use easy-to-find ingredients.  It is also usually cheaper to go with the banquet hall’s catering service rather than an outside service.  Also, buffet-style setups can cost a lot less than a plate service.

If you cannot afford a higher-end hall, consider other lower cost alternatives such as a VFW hall or Parks and Recreation Center.  If there’s space, there is a good chance the company may allow you to rent it out.  A VFW hall in Illinois we found online, for example, charges $110 per hour for Friday and Saturday nights.

How Much Does Calamari Cost?

Calamari, also known as “Squid” or “Fried Squid,” is a popular dish that comes from the Mediterranean.  This squid is generally deep fried and is served as an appetizer at many Italian and seafood restaurants.  Many restaurants tend to use their own spices when it comes to deep frying it, so the taste may vary from restaurant to restaurant.  Common sauces that are served with calamari include tartar sauce, cocktail sauce, and signature sauces.  The cost of calamari is going to depend on the restaurant to which you are going, how much you want and the time of the year.

How much does calamari cost?

At most restaurants, this appetizer is going to range anywhere from $5.50 to as much as $18 at your higher end restaurants.  A higher end restaurant in a city, such as New York, will charge a lot more than a franchise-based restaurant in Iowa.  For example, Olive Garden charges around $10 for their calamari appetizer.

Raw calamari steaks will cost anywhere from $6 to $12 per pound.  These can usually be purchased at your local fishing markets or even online.

To purchase calamari rings, the price will vary anywhere from $7 to $15 per pound.  If you decide to purchase online, it will more than likely have to be shipped to your door within 24 hours.

Calamari can also be purchased frozen.  A 32-ounce box can cost $55 to $75, and eight to 18-ounce individual boxes can cost anywhere from $8 to $30 depending on the store you purchase it from.

Calamari overview

Most will pre-pack the squid to ensure that it holds its freshness.  Calamari will generally be shrink-wrapped so that it can be thrown in the freezer to last longer.

Some companies may prep the calamari.  This will include the spices and it should already be battered in a shrink wrap.  All you have to do is throw it in the oven or deep fryer.

The meat is known to be firm, sweet and almost has a nuttier flavor.  Squid, which is where the meat comes from, can size up to 80 feet, but most people will eat from squid less than 12 inches.

Calamari can be bought from online seafood vendors, many grocery store chains, seafood markets and ethnic markets.

What are the extra costs?

Most fish markets online will ship to your home and will typically be at your door within 24 hours.  Shipping costs can vary with most online merchants, especially if you don’t meet the minimum spending requirements.

If you decide to cook a meal at home using Calamari, you will need additional ingredients such as the batter, a deep fryer, spices and a dipping sauce.

Tips to know:

Something such as Calamari can’t be cooked for a long time.  If it’s cooked for too long, it will almost taste like rubber.  Most state that two to three minutes on a high heat is more than enough.  It can also be simmered in a tomato sauce to be paired with pasta.

If you’re going to clean calamari, keep in mind that almost 50 percent of the body can’t be used.  To prepare, the head, viscera, inner cartilage, the fins, skin and beak will all have to be removed.  The only part of the squid that’s edible will be the tentacles and body.

What is calamari?  Calamari is a squid, and it’s usually, but not always, deep fried or battered.  Known as the Italian word for squid, it’s usually made from European squid – a squid found in the Mediterranean, Adriatic sea and some parts of the Atlantic Ocean.

Calamari is usually prepared as an appetizer and is garnished with a lemon and parsley.  Calamari dipping sauces can include marinara, an aioli, tartar sauce or flavored mayonnaise.

What should be included in the purchase?

The prices for farm animals are usually for pick up.  Sellers will only ship orders when buyers meet the minimum order requirement.

Some of the prices may or may not include the registration.

Some sellers may include the up-to-date vaccinations and/or checkups from a local vet depending on the age.  Be sure to get all paperwork if these things are going to be included.  This is good for your records.

Each farm animal will have its own purpose and are often segregated into the following groups:  dairy, poultry, meat producing and transportation.

What are the extra costs?

Transporting the animal from one place to another need to be factored in.  Depending on the animal size, you may need a trailer.

The maintenance and development of the area where the farm animals are to be raised is a large extra cost.  Most of these animals are going to need a larger plot of land that is fenced in.  Housing will also be necessary, and the costs can be as little as a few hundred dollars for a chicken coop to as much as a few hundred thousand for an extravagant barn.  Permits will more than likely have to be pulled as well.

The daily maintenance for the animals such as the food, water, and other accessories.  Each animal is going to greatly vary depending on which one is purchased.

A livestock sitter will be needed for most animals if you plan on being away for more than 12-24 hours.

As with any animals, health conditions may occur, and the same can be said with routine visits.  Vet visits, depending on the type of animal, can greatly vary.  If you’re able to take the animal directly to the vet, the costs can start at $50, but if the vet has to travel to your farm, the costs could be three to four times this amount.  Talk with your vet ahead of time to make sure they will able to handle your animals.

Tips to know

Before committing to any livestock, make sure they are suitable to your climate.  A sheep won’t be happy in a desert-like field.  Also, choose livestock that’s compatible with your physical capabilities.  Don’t adopt an animal if you can’t handle it.

Check your local city/state laws before purchasing an animal.  Some authorities may require you need a special license to handle livestock.  They may also ask your property is zoned for the livestock you plan on keeping.

Pekin ducks, rabbits, chickens, goats, pigs and cows are said to be the best animals to raise when you’re starting out.

Buying in larger quantities will qualify you for discounted prices.  For instance, a duckling that costs $6 can only cost $4.50 when you purchase 25+.

How Much Do Vampire Fang Implants Cost?

Usually, fang implants are for cosmetic purposes, and these implanted fangs are fitted over the original tooth; they can be movable but can also be permanent.  Similar to the plastic ones you see during Halloween, some people spend the money to have the permanent fang look.  This procedure is often catered to those who make unique body modifications.

How much do vampire fang implants cost?

The cost will depend on the type you get and where you get it done.  A synthetic removable type too can cost about $100 for each fang.   To have a permanent set, cosmetic dentists, who perform the procedure, may charge $800 to $2,500 for two fangs, and this is done by filing the teeth down and placing a permanent cap over your tooth.

The most expensive process, which can involve custom made caps, can cost $2,000 to more than $5,000.  These caps can be taken off and will look almost as good, if not better than a permanent solution.

Cheaper fake vampire teeth, designed primarily for Halloween costumes, can cost less than $10.

Dr. Rob Tennet said it will depend on your bite and which type you’re thinking about fangs in the corner or in the middle.

Vampire fangs overview

There are few ways you can get vampire fangs:  via a slip on, permanently or caps.  The most common type will be a slip on.  As the name notes, these fangs simply slip over your teeth and you’re able to take them out whenever you please.  Permanent options, on the other hand, will be made from real dental acrylics.  These teeth will be inserted via a cosmetic dentist and will be adjusted to fit your mouth via a drill.  During this process, your tooth will be filled down enough so the cap can fit on.  Lastly, caps can be either be made from a synthetic material, or it’s customized, it could be made from an acrylic-like material that’s used to fill cavities.  Caps won’t be permanent, as mentioned above.

Implants can come in just about any size; however, experts warn if they are too large, it may interfere with your speech.

The procedure can be done at various cosmetic dentist offices, but do keep in mind many will condone the process and may not agree to it.

Tips to know:

Vampire teeth are for appearance purposes only, and usually, these teeth won’t be sharp enough to puncture the skin.

Since this is considered a cosmetic procedure, most insurance providers won’t cover something such as this.

Those who are a viable candidate will have healthy teeth and a significant amount of bone in the jaw.  Those who have any gum disease or rotting teeth will often have a hard time finding a dentist who will perform the procedure.

Those who have had the procedure done in the past say it can be hard to eat and talk at first; however, as time goes on, you will get adjusted to it.

Side effects may include developing malocclusion, which is overjet of the upper front teeth.  Sores may also pop up in the area where the fangs were implanted.

If getting permanent fangs, don’t forget about the future as you grow old.

How to make vampire teeth

How can I save money?

Many dentists and cosmetic surgeons will give a discount to cash patients.

Consider other options such as slip-on teeth.  These teeth can be temporary and are only going to cost significantly less than actual implants.

If you can’t afford the bill up front, some dentists may allow you to get on a payment plan.

How Much Does a Half Sleeve Tattoo Cost?

Half-sleeve tattoos refer to a tattoo that takes up half the arm, commonly in the region of the entire upper arm from the shoulder to the elbow.  However, some traditional Japanese and tribal “half sleeves” may start on the chest.

Shading added to the sleeve by joestump, on Flickr
Shading added to the sleeve” (CC BY 2.0) by  joestump

How much does a half sleeve tattoo cost?

The price of a half sleeve tattoo will depend on the experience of the artist, how detailed the tattoo design is, the complexity and geographical location.  It is really hard to pinpoint an exact price as each situation is going to be different.  This can be said with any tattoo you plan on getting.  An entire sleeve, on average, can range anywhere from $500 to as much as $3,000 or more.  Again, this is a ballpark and it’s hard to get an accurate quote.

Some tattoo shops will charge by the hour instead of a flat rate, regardless of the design, and these hourly rates can be anywhere from $50 to $200 per hour. On average, a sleeve done all at once may take 10 to 35 hours+, depending on the complexity, colors, and the artist’s speed.  Keep in mind that many people tend to get these types of tattoos over time and not at once.

One member on Reddit.com claimed his half sleeve took 15 hours, and he paid $150 per hour for the job.

NextLuxury.com notes it may cost $500 to $2,000 and most should plan on spending at least five to eight hours to have the job done.

Half sleeve tattoo overview

Half-sleeve tattoos can be pre-designed or can be drafted by using existing tattoos. Pre-planned sleeves commonly entail long hours of tattooing sessions and can even take weeks, months, or years to complete depending on the intricacy of the produced design.  In some instances, a sleeve piece is created when the customer has numerous smaller pieces, making a connection with additional pieces like fillers or perhaps a background.  In the end, a half sleeve should take up half of the arm and will cover the shoulder to the elbow area.

A consultation with the artist is the first step of the process.  The artist is going to help you with your pre-planned design or can help you find something if you are unsure of what you want.

The full design will be included, usually in the traditional black and white color.  While colors can be done, it can be an additional cost.

What are the extra costs?

The more detailed the tattoo is, the higher your price tag is going to be.  This can be especially true if the tattoo is detailed and is hard to create.  Custom made tattoos will always cost more.

If the design you came up with requires many colors,  it will be more expensive than only one or two colors.

The number of sessions needed and the time span of each session is going to affect the price.  Some shops may have a flat fee when visiting, regardless of how long your session is.

Over the years or even after your final session is done, there’s a good chance you will have to come in for a touch-up session.  Some artists may do this for free if you’re a repeat customer, while others will charge a small fee; this is usually a bit less than their hourly rate.

Most artists will ask for a deposit to book your time slot.  This way, if you were to be a no-show, they would keep the deposit for wasting their time.  Of course, if you show up at your time slot, this deposit will be applied to your final bill.  Most deposits will be one hour of their hourly rate.

How can I save money?

Talk with a few artists in your area.  Be sure to focus on their past work, education and cleanliness.  When it comes to any tattoo, you will never want to focus on the cheapest or quickest option because remember, this tattoo will be with you for life and there’s a good chance a lot of people will see it while you’re walking the streets.  A good tattoo will take time and a lot of patience.

Some artists may lower their hourly rate if you schedule sessions in the future.

How Much Does Ganglion Cyst Removal Cost?

A ganglion cyst is an inflammation that emerges around tendons and joints, usually in the hand or near the foot. These cysts contain clear fluid and are most frequently seen around the wrist and even on the fingers.  The mass of this cyst varies over a time period.  Its etiology is currently unknown since these cysts are perceived to be idiopathic or have an undetermined cause.

Ganglion cyst by mor10am, on Flickr
Ganglion cyst” (CC BY 2.0) by mor10am

How much does a ganglion cyst removal cost?

The cost of ganglion cyst removal will vary anywhere from $5,000 to $7,000 if you choose surgery.  The factors that affect the price will include the doctor performing the procedure, the geographical location and the complexity of the removal.  However, most people find these cysts will go away over time, and most likely, you won’t need a medical procedure done.   Close to 40% see their cyst disappear within a week.

If an aspiration is performed, which drains the cyst, the process can cost about $450 to $750.

Ganglion cyst overview

A consultation with a doctor before the surgery is even performed.  Some doctors may shy away from the procedure as they may find that it isn’t necessary.

There are two options when it comes to ganglion cyst removal.  These options include Aspiration and Ganglionectomy. Aspiration is completed with the use of an 18 to 22mL syringe that is injected into the abnormal sac to cart off the fluid substance by suction.  It was found, however, that the aspiration procedure usually incurs a high-level repetition rate, so surgery (also known as a ganglionectomy) is the preferred and suggested treatment.   During this surgical intervention, the surgeon marks the marginal boundaries of the abnormal sac with a scalpel After the sac is cut out and entirely excised, the incision is stitched back and dressed for recovery.  Depending on the situation, most procedures will take 40 to 75 minutes to perform.

The cyst is usually easy to diagnose because they are visible and pliable to the touch.  The location can also determine if it’s a ganglion cyst.

Recovery time can be about one to two weeks, depending on your condition.

What is a ganglion cyst?

These cysts are common lumps often found on the wrist, hand and are adjacent to tendons or joints.  The most common location will be near the top of the wrist or on the palm side the wrist.  It resembles a water balloon and will be filled with a clear liquid.  The cause is unknown but can appear if there’s joint and/or tendon irritation.  These cysts are not considered cancerous and won’t spread to other areas.

What are the extra costs?

A pre-treatment consultation may mean an additional cost, but it is an important step of the process; you need to know if you actually need to undergo the surgery.  Almost one-third to half the cyst will fade away and you need not go through any minor surgical intervention.  It is always best to consult with your doctor as they are going to point you in the right direction on what is best.  During this consultation, a doctor will take x-rays and/or ultrasounds.  These consultations, along with the necessary tests, can cost around $250 to $600+ without any insurance.

A surgery for ganglion cyst removal is advised in cases of larger ganglion cysts; this treatment is generally done with either local or regional anesthesia unless circumstances call for a general anesthesia.  The kind of anesthesia can cost upwards of $2,000 depending on the hospital.

Probable complications can affect the ganglion cyst removal cost.

Possible side effects can include stiffness, hand contractions and/or bending difficulties because of some scar tissue formation.   These side effects may require medication or even some sort of physical therapy.  Complications happen in about 10% of the cases.

A follow-up appointment will be necessary to see the progress.  This is usually about three to four weeks after the procedure.

A wrist brace for a ganglion cyst, if you want one for home treatment, can cost about $7 to $15.

Tips to know

These cysts will contain synovial fluid, often found in the joints and tendons.   Close to 65% of these cysts will occur on the upper surface of the wrist, while around 256 will be on the palm of the hand.  The remaining will occur near the flexor tendon or sole of the foot.

While the cause is unknown, some indications point to trauma or the deterioration of the tissue that lines the joints.

An old adage proclaimed you could hit the cyst with a large book such as the Bible, but even if it were to get rid of the cyst, it can still reappear.  Cysts that consistently reappear often are candidates for a surgical procedure.

These cysts are most likely to occur in adults ages 20 to 50 years old, with males the most likely candidate.

To treat a ganglion cyst with essential oil, consider a blend of lemongrass, oregano, thyme and frankincense.

How long do cysts last?  Each individual will have varying results, but the average is two to eight weeks.

Ganglion cyst symptoms

A bump that appears to change in size.  It will be soft to the touch and won’t be larger than a few centimeters in diameter.

It may go away, only to come back at another time.

Pain may increase with joint motion.

If it’s connected to a tendon, you may feel a sense of weakness.

Ganglion cyst home treatment

Take anti-inflammatory painkillers

Over-the-counter painkiller can help reduce the swelling and manage the pain.  These painkillers may include Advil, Motrin, Aleve and Bayer.

Apply ice

Applying ice can also reduce the swelling and help with the pain.  Consider using a frozen bag of vegetables or an ice pack from your local pharmacy.

Consider usage

Avoid using the troubled area as much as possible.  Theories suggest an overused joint can lead to this type of cyst.

Stabilize

If you feel you can’t avoid using it, consider putting your arm in a splint if this is where the cyst is present.  Stabilizing can help with the movement, leading to less pain.

Massage it

Your cyst is a balloon of liquid, so when you press it, you’re hitting a nerve, causing pain.  Doctors recommend massaging the area to help circulate the area.

How can I save money?

It is known that the cyst’s recurrence rate is high if you chose to undergo an aspiration.  With time, however, the recurrence rate substantially lessens.  Multiple aspiration sessions or treatments mean multiple times you need to pay all the fees.

Talk with your doctor to consider alternative methods to help the cyst since surgery isn’t always deemed necessary.

Consult with your health insurance provider as many providers may cover a procedure such as this one.  This will depend on your plan.

How Much Does ECM Replacement Cost?

The engine control module is a mini computer that controls many of the vehicle’s functions.  The engine computer, or PCM/ECM, manages the performance of the engine, the emissions system, and it controls the transmission, among other things.

How much does an ECM replacement cost?

Usually, a brand new ECM part will cost you around $400 to $2,200.  The labor usually won’t be included in this price tag as this is the price of the part only.  The cost will depend on your car’s make and model, as well as the mechanic you choose if you decide to have it professionally installed.  Fortunately, in some cases, it can be re-programmed and can cost a lot less.  This will all depend on your situation.

A remanufactured ECM can cost you anywhere from $200-$400.  If you choose to go this route, make sure the part comes with a factory warranty or is 100% certified.

If the ECM just has to be reprogrammed and/or analyzed, it can cost $150 to $300. Repairs should always be less than $750.

To have the part installed, add an additional $350 to $1,500 to the prices mentioned above.

Howstuffworks.com says the repair can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars.  It can get expensive if your car’s security system or anything else electronic needs to be modified.

ECM replacement overview

The ECM is considered the “brain” of the car.  It’s going to analyze information to manage and control the engine’s performance.  Coming from different sensors, it will send the data to the ECM.

Some functions will include measuring the air/fuel ration, ignition timing, idle speed and valve timing.  The air/fuel ratio will measure the air/fuel mixture inside the engine’s cylinder during combustion.  Depending on factors, it will automatically inject the right amount of fuel.  The ignition timer will correct spark plug timing and sequencing to prevent knocking.  While the car is in idle, the idle speed will make sure the car isn’t wasting unnecessary fuel while in the idle position.  Lastly, the valve timer will adjust the opening of the valves to allow the right amount of air.

During the ECM procedure, a mechanic will first locate the ECM.  This will vary depending on your car’s make and model, but oftentimes, it will be located in the engine compartment, under the seats or in the floorboards.  The ECM will be held in place by bolts and brackets, and these will be removed so the mechanic is able to disconnect the plugs behind it.  Once free, the memory chip (PROM), if the car has one, will be removed, and a new one will be installed.  The plugs will be reconnected and tested to see if the “check engine” light disappears.

The entire process should take 30 to 60 minutes.

Tips to know

Bring your car into a local auto parts shop as many offer free diagnostic tests for your ECM.  This will let you know whether there is a need to replace or just repair the ECM.

Common symptoms of a faulty ECM may include several unrelated codes, the vehicle may not start properly or the engine is performing poorly without setting codes.  Also, if your check engine light is one and it won’t go off, there’s a good chance there’s a faulty ECM.

Newer cars will have an upgradeable PCM, so be sure to check your owner’s manual to learn how you can upgrade the software.

CarsDirect.com notes that when you take your car in for a repair and/or a diagnosis, make sure they are using the latest software to diagnose your problem.  Most dealerships, especially the one you purchased your car from, will often have the latest technology to check out the problem.

ECM vs. PCM:  What’s the difference?

This is a question often brought up, and the answer is relatively simple.

This is a question often brought up, and the answer is relatively simple.  The ECM is known as the engine control module and can be referred to as ECU as well.  As noted above, this is the computer which will take the incoming sensor data to alter the functioning of the electronic system.   It can gather information from the intake, cooling system, exhaust and internal components to judge the condition of the engine.

The PCM stands for “powertrain control module,” and similar to the ECU, it can control the engine and transmission in one unit to better coordinate the function for better fuel economy.  Most units will contain a separate TCM and ECU, and each one will have its own processor.

How can I save money?

The best way to save money is to get a used ECM from a salvage yard, which can cost you about $200.  This is generally going to be cheaper than your local dealer.  Again, ensure that the ECM is certified so that it does not fail on you too quickly.

There are companies which also offers rebuilt computers that can cost $400 or less.  A great place to check for these is auction sites such as eBay and Craigslist.

It can also save money to buy at nearby stores rather than online stores in order to save on shipping charges.

Look for service providers that offer free installation when you buy an ECM.  Also, check with your car’s warranty.  Something such as this may be covered if it is deemed to be faulty.

Do not decide to replace the ECM right away.  Try going to service providers which may offer repairs to the malfunctioning ECM rather than replace the whole unit.

If you have knowledge on how to install ECM and are capable of doing the installation yourself, this can save you a lot of money as well. However, keep in mind you should have knowledge with circuit boards and can be a very complicated process.

With any car repair, try to get as many quotes as possible.  Most will be able to give you a “ballpark” over the phone if you know for certain it’s your ECM.

How Much Does Gap Insurance Cost?

Gap insurance is a specific type of insurance that ensures the vehicle is paid off after an unforeseen accident, no matter what the remaining balance on the car loan or difference in value may be.

With gap insurance, policyholders can have peace of mind that there will be no financial burden from a vehicle’s total loss.  Gap insurance covers the difference between the value of your car and what you owe on it in case the car is declared a total loss by your insurance company due to fire, flood or storm damage, or if it is stolen.

How much does gap insurance cost?

The value of your vehicle will affect how much you pay for your gap insurance.  Another thing that comes into play is how much you owe on the vehicle. If you have a $30,000 car, but you put $20,000 down on it,  then a $10,000 difference remains.   Usually, you can expect to pay anywhere from $8 to $30 a month extra for your gap insurance.

Gap insurance premiums are roughly 5 to 6 percent of the premium for collision and comprehensive insurance you have on the car.  For example, a $1,400 annual premium with $450 to $550 of that typically for collision and comprehensive, gap insurance would cost anywhere $20 to $30.  The cost will go down along with the cost of collision and comprehensive as the vehicle gets older

If you were to pay the one-time fee, it could cost anywhere from $500 to $800.  For example, CarMax has said to charge about $400 for their gap insurance policy.

We called up and spoke with some representatives from larger companies and most were able to offer a “ballpark.”  Some were able to give averages, while others were able to offer what the most you would probably pay.  As mentioned above, it really depends on the premium and your car’s worth.

Bankrate.com said gap insurance could cost about $20 to $30 per year on a $1,400 annual premium.

According to Carinsurance.com, car insurance companies charge $20 per year, while lenders could charge $500 to $700.

Gap insurance overview

Depending on the policy, gap insurance usually covers accidents and thefts, but all policies are not created equally.  Therefore, it is a good idea to figure out the coverage offered by the insurance company.  Consult with them to ensure that you know what’s going to be covered when you add the gap insurance to your policy.

This insurance will usually pay the difference between your car’s ACV and the remaining balance left on your car’s loan.

Unlike your standard car insurance policy, it won’t come with a deductible attached to it.

These policies can be purchased at the dealership, through a major insurance carrier or independent insurance agent.

Gap insurance can be purchased in two ways:  as a one-time upfront payment or it can be tied into your auto loan.

What are the extra costs?

If you were to tie the gap insurance into your car loan, you will have to pay interest on it.

Tips to know:

If you already own your car and you have a lot of equity built into it, you probably won’t need gap insurance.

For those who either lease a vehicle or even finance for more than 60 months should highly consider something such as gap insurance.

For those who drive more than 20,000 miles annually, or if you are planning on putting less than 20 percent down, it is wise to consider gap insurance.

To know what your car is worth, check the NADA Guide.  If your loan is more than what your car is worth, then you may want to consider a policy.

Most will recommend you avoid purchasing from a dealership since many charges up to $1,000 as a one-time fee.

Gap insurance will only apply to your loan.  Once you pay off your loan, you will no longer need the coverage and you can get a refund if you paid off your loan early.  This can also apply if you were to sell your car early and/or refinance your loan.

State laws vary, but in most, you can purchase this type of policy on a used car.

Institutions generally won’t offer coverage to a private loan through an individual.  It will have to be through a financial institution.

Gap insurance can’t be transferred to another loan.

You can cancel gap insurance if you no longer need it.  Pay attention to the policies and terms to see how you can cancel.

How do I know if I have gap insurance?  If you don’t know if you have gap insurance, there are three things you can do:  you can either contact your insurance company, financial institution or the dealership you purchased from.  If possible, you can also log into your online accounts to view paperwork to see if gap insurance is included.

How can I save money?

Consult with the auto finance company where you obtained your car loan.  Many offer gap insurance for a cheaper premium and sometimes even free.

Look for companies that specialize only in gap insurance.  Review the terms of each policy.  From those insurance companies, compare prices and rates so you are guaranteed to find a good deal.  You need also to take into account the coverage offered.  Generally, as long as you compare at least three companies, you should be assured that you are going to get the best deal possible on your insurance.

How to save on gap insurance

Shop Around

Did you know that the average American can save upwards of $500 just by comparing?  Yes, comparing sounds rather simple but so many people don’t do it.  Take advantage of the Internet, and use car insurance comparison tools.  Set aside a few minutes of your day and get at least three to five quotes.  The kicker here is to make sure that you go directly to the source.  By doing so, you’ll weed out the middleman.

Be Aware of Discounts

Most, if not all car insurance providers offer a variety of discounts.  These discounts include good driver, loyalty, good grades and group discounts.  Don’t be afraid to ask the insurance company about all the discounts that are available.  They will probably ask you a few questions that relate to your personal situation and your car.  With your answers, they will be able to match you up with the best discounts available.  Aside from those discounts, also keep in mind that car insurance companies are more than happy to provide significant discounts to those that combine their other insurance policies such as their homeowner’s policy.

Higher Deductibles

By raising your deductible, this can help bring your premiums down by more than 35 percent.  As you probably know, the deductible will be the amount that you’ll be responsible for in case of an accident.  Increasing your deductible by $100 to $500 can bring your premium down drastically.  Increasing your deductible to as high as $1,000 can bring your premiums down by more than 45 percent.

How Much Do Eclectus Parrots Cost?

The Eclectus Parrot (Eclectus roratus) is native to the Solomon Islands, New Guinea, Northeastern Australia, and the Maluku Islands.  The Eclectus is deemed by many to be the most stunning parrots out of over 350 species.  The Eclectus parrots are not just fine-looking; they are also excellent chatterers, copying countless words, expressions and phrases.  They can even sing songs that are commonly presented to them.  If you happen to have more than one Eclectus parrot, they will speak and sing not only to their owners and human friends but to one another as well.

How much does the Eclectus parrot cost?

There are four commonly available Eclectus subspecies:  the Solomon Island, the Grand, the Red-sided, and the Vosmaeri Eclectus.  On average, this bird is going to range anywhere from $600 to as much as $2,000.  A Solomon Island Eclectus, for example, will cost anywhere from $800 to $2,200.  Overall, this is going to all depend on the breeder, gender, your location, the species, the quality and age of the bird.  Males are said to be 20 to 30 percent more than a female.

An older bird, usually three to five years or more, will generally cost a little less than a younger bird.  Older birds can usually be found for as little as $300.

On BirdsNow.com, a popular online bird classified website, listings can cost anywhere from $800 to a pinch more than $2,000.

What is going to be included in the adoption fee?

Most breeders are going to include the parrot in a smaller travel box, while some breeders may give you a smaller cage just for traveling purposes.

Some breeders may also include a start-up pack that includes food, toys and certain accessories.

Reputable breeders should include certification papers, up to date vaccinations and health records.  This could include the baby hatch certificate and vet health certificate.  Most should include a health guarantee as well.

What are the extra costs?

A large bird cage will cost anywhere from $250 to as much as $1,000.  Generally, the more parrots you have, the more space you are going to need.  Some owners prefer to have one cage for each bird.

Toys are important to keep your pet bird entertained.  Although this is optional, it is highly recommended.  A typical toy can cost anywhere from $5 to $25 for something such as a ball.

Parrots are going to require routine checkups as well as unexpected vet visits.  Vet checkups are going to start at about $65.

A wide variety of food is necessary such as fruits, beans, vegetables, greens, brown rice, legumes and sprouts.  This breed of birds does not do well on all pellet diets or seed diets.  If not kept on a specific low-fat diet, they are prone to fatty liver disease.  Parrotforums.com recommends budgeting $10~ per week for the necessary food.

If the bird needs to be shipped, this can cost about $100 to $300, depending on the distance and option you choose.

A bird first aid kit is recommended in case of an emergency.

Tips to know

The male parrots have a bright green head, bright candy corn-colored beak, and blue or red tail and wing feathers.   The females are red-headed and blue-breasted with black beaks.

If purchasing a young bird, see how they eat.  Are they eating pellets?  Are they water bottle trained?  It’s often a lot easier to buy a trained bird rather than train it at home.   It’s also wise to see how they react with humans.  While it can take years to create a bond, some hand-reared birds don’t react well if taken away from a home they are comfortable with.

Health issues may include nostril discharge, constricted toe syndrome, dull beaks and heavy metal poisoning.

Talk with a few local breeders in your area.

Check local adoption centers or online classified ads as some people may need to get rid of their parrot for various reasons.  This is a great way to get the bird, along with all the of the necessary supplies.
