How Much Does a Sand Hills Golf Club Membership Cost?

Written by:  Howmuchisit.org Staff

Located in Mullen, Nebraska, this private golf club was designed by the famous golf architect team of Crenshaw and Bill Corre, who created an 8,000-acre ranch in tiny Mullen into a golfing oasis. Corre and Crenshaw studied the land for two years and created several sketches of the 136 different holes before choosing the final 18 holes for which they had only 3,000 cubic yards of soil and sand during construction.

Considered as an instant golf classic upon its completion, the Sand Hills golf club is regarded as the most celebrated course in the Midwest, drawing membership from across the globe. The club’s membership includes mostly national members and spread all over the country and perhaps globally as well. The club has less than 200 members.

How much does it cost to join the Sand Hills Golf Club?

With a long waiting list, memberships are said to be in mid to high five figures annually, and the costs will greatly depend on the type of membership.  Being extremely private, it was hard to find information online.  The club, from what we researched, although not confirmed, currently has a waiting list.

Sand Hills Golf Club overview

The golf course, a 7,089 yard, par 71 course, was designed in 1995.  To see the course in pictures, nowonthetee.blogspot.com talked about his experience and included multiple pictures.  This blog post on top100golf.blogspot.com offers pictures and a review as well.

Aside from the course, the club offers a practice putting green, club rentals, a driving range, showers, locker rooms, snack bar, restaurant on site, a bar and fully stocked pro shop.

What are the extra costs?

Guest fees cost $195 with an additional $20 for a cart, and these fees apply to members/guests who don’t have golf privileges.

Tips to know:

The golf club is a private golf course with an “accompanied by a member” policy.  All guests require a sponsorship by a member.

Accolades include Golf Digest’s Best New Private Course in 1995, the 100 Greatest Golf Courses in 2016 by Golf Digest, and the #1 Best Modern Course by GolfWeek.

The club’s golf course sits on a sprawling, remote and obscure 19,600 square-mile area in north-central Nebraska called the Sand Hills, which is the biggest expanse of sand dunes in America.

The links-style golf course is hilly, but not hard to walk. There are many natural and man-made bunkers; however, there are no water hazards, trees or out-of-bounds stakes on the course.  The greens are undulating and fast, with varying sizes from small to very large.

The Sand Hills golf club is isolated and laid out in the middle of Mullen — a town with less than 500 residents and more than five hours away from the nearest major airports -Denver and Omaha.

Some online sources mention that the club is closed for eight months each year and many members are also members of upscale country clubs in different states.  Here, the golf season lasts from June 1 to September 30 of each year.

Members have the opportunity to be included in the Nebraska Golf Association.

It has been rumored that non-members can play during non-peak times if you write the club a letter.  If approved, it is said the costs are around $225 per round and non-members can only do this once in their lifetime.
