In 1921, a group of members from the New York Athletic Club, who wanted to play golf, came up with the idea of building a golf course. When the athletic club was not responsive to their idea, the group eventually left the athletic club and moved on with their plan of building a course. They bought 280 acres of land property in Mamaroneck and hired noted golf architect A.W. Tillinghast for the ‘man-sized golf course’ they wanted.

Sources online, although not confirmed, claim the initiation fees can be as high as $200,000, and annual dues are within the $15,000 to $20,000 range ($1,250+ a month). The costs of joining the Winged Foot Golf Club, as with any country club, will greatly depend on the type of membership you sign up for. The Winged Foot Golf Club, however, is a private club and membership is by invitation only.
The New York Post claimed the initiation fees can be anywhere from $35,000 to $150,000 and the waiting list is as long as 10 years.

The Winged Foot opened for play in 1923 with two 18-hole championship courses: the East and the West course. Both courses are considered great artistic works of Tillinghast and regarded as two of the best layouts in golf’s golden age of architecture.
Members have full access to the two golf courses, the clubhouse, the Grille, locker rooms, services and other privileges of the club.

Winged Foot is also known as a “player’s club” because many of the club’s professional instructors became pro players and a few emerged as champions in golf tournaments. The winner of the 1941 Masters and US Open was Craig Harmon; he was the club’s golf professional from 1939 to 1945. Another club pro, Claude Harmon, was the winner of the Masters in 1948. Moreover, previous club pro assistants, Jackie Burke Jr., won the 1956 Masters, and Dave Marr was a 1965 PGA champion. Many of the club pros moved on to win major events later in their careers.
Aside from the club’s respected guest list, Winged Foot has an impressively dignified clubhouse made of brick, stone and slate. The stones were selected from the tons of rocks blasted during the construction of both courses. Word got around that the Duke of Windsor, who was a regular visitor at the club, often felt homesick as the clubhouse reminded him of his English home and the palace. The club’s front entrance is guarded by Leo the Lion, a sculpted sentry that stands under the front porch. The trademark color of blue-and-white extended roofing that shades the terrace creates a majestic ambiance that the structure would last well through the years as long as the game of golf remains.
The club does not have a tee time and prefers it this way since members believe that playing must not be bounded by the clock.
