How Much Does Ricotta Cheese Cost?

Ricotta cheese is an Italian whey cheese produced from either a cow, sheep, goat or even water buffalo.  This cheese is made by thickening the proteins that settle after the casein has been used to create the cheese.  Ricotta will be creamy white and is sweeter in taste when compared to other cheese.  Depending on the brand, the fat content will vary.

How much does ricotta cheese cost?

On average, authentic ricotta cheese in its raw form can range anywhere from $6 to $18 per pound.   The cost to purchase ricotta cheese will often depend on the animal’s milk used (cows, sheep or goats), the brand and where it’s from.

Ricotta impastata, a high quality of ricotta cheese, is often very hard to find as it’s only made in one region in Sicily.  If found, this type can be much more, often in the $30 per pound range.

Ricotta Salata cheese, a pressed, salted, dried and aged variety will be milky-white, firm and will commonly be used for grating.  This type of cheese, for example, can cost about $7 to $14 per pound from reputable retailers.

Ricotta cheese, often found in 16 to 32-ounce plastic containers, commonly in the refrigerated section, will cost $1.50 to $5 per container.  Again, the prices will depend on the brand and where you purchase it.  Walmart’s Great Value brand, for instance, retails for less than $2 per 16-ounces, whereas a name brand, such as Galbani, will be closer to $4 per 32 ounces.

Ricotta cheese overview

Ricotta, in its fresh form, will be creamy white in character, similar to that of cottage cheese, and will have a slightly sweet taste.  Depending on the label and the kind of milk being used, the fat content will change.

Fresh ricotta can go through an additional production process to allow it to have a much longer shelf life.  This can include, according to Wikipedia, baking, smoking or further fermenting it.

Popular ricotta cheese brands include Sorrento, Calabro, Polly-O, Organic Valley, Galbani, Tofutti and White Rose.

Ricotta cheese nutrition

A one cup serving will contain close to 428 calories and 32 grams of fat.  The majority of the fat — close to 20 grams — will come from saturated fat.  Part-skim, however, will have less fat and fewer calories per serving, usually around 339 calories per cup and 19 grams of fat.

One serving will contain 125 milligrams of cholesterol, while part-skim will have 76 milligrams.  A fat-free version has 60 milligrams.

As for carbohydrates and protein, one serving will have 7.5 grams of carbohydrates and 28 grams of protein.

One serving has 206 milligrams of sodium, with part-skim and fat-free varieties containing significantly more, close to 600 milligrams.

Tips to know:

Ricotta can commonly found in dishes, including cheesecakes, cannolis, pasta, calzones, strombolis, pizza, lasagna, manicotti, and ravioli.  BuzzFeed, for instance, lists 13 delicious ways to use it.

How can I save money?

If purchasing in a plastic container, the grocery store brand will, almost always, have the same ingredients and can cost 20 to 30 percent less.

Buying in bulk at a local wholesale club can often bring the costs down quite a bit.  For example, Costco sells a five-pound container for less than $10, effectively bringing the costs down to $0.80 per ounce.

Consider making your own ricotta cheese.  While it sounds difficult, it can be done by using a gallon of milk and heavy cream.  SpringsBargains.com explains how it can be done for a lot less than buying ricotta cheese at the local grocery store.

How Much Does River Rock Cost?

River rock is one of the many rocks you can use to improve the appearance of your garden or landscaping.  River rocks are also a great way to cover up an empty space, act as an alternative for grass or certain areas that may be an eyesore.  River rocks are randomly shaped rocks that come in a variety of color and shades that have a warm and inviting look.

How much does river rock cost?

The price of river rock will depend on the size of the rock, where you live and the retailer you use.  On average, river rocks can cost anywhere from $27 to $37 per ton at a local landscaping supply yard.  This won’t include professional installation or delivery fees.  If priced by the yard, it can be in the $230 to $250 range.

Arizona Trucking and Materials, a landscaping supply company in Arizona, lists its prices on its official website.  According to the pricing list, their salt river rock retails for $37 per ton, with the exception of the river rock in the 6 to 12-inch width range; these rocks are $2 more per ton at $39 per ton.

Now, if you were to purchase it at a local hardware retailer, such as Home Depot, by the bag, it would cost about $5 to $25 per 0.5 cubic feet.  For instance, at the Home Depot, a 0.5 cubic foot bag of Classic Stone medium-sized rocks retails for $25.  This 0.5-cubic foot bag of river rock at Lowe’s retails for $5.

As for the wholesale level, professional landscapers have claimed they have been able to find it for as little as $5 to $17 per ton at a local quarry.

River rock overview

In general, a river rock will count as anything larger than one inch in diameter, but it will exclude natural stones.  If the stone is larger than average, then it may be referred to as a boulder or larger landscaping stone, even if the material is the same.

River rock, if purchased from a local landscaping supplier, will often sort its river rocks by size.  The sizes will often be broken down by a half inch, one to three inches or three to eight inches wide.  Some suppliers may even offer crushed river rock.  Most of the time, even though the rocks will be larger in width, the prices will remain the same.

In addition to the size, rocks will be divided by grade and finish.  The higher the grade, the better the quality will be.  As for the finish, river rock will have a polished or matte look.

River rocks often work best as ground cover, often in areas where mulch is often used since it can be a lot more effective than mulching materials.

What are the extra costs?

Most suppliers will charge a delivery fee if you need it delivered to your door, whereas some may waive this fee if you purchase a minimum amount, usually five tons or more.  From most of the suppliers we looked at, most charge up to $50 to $200 per delivery, depending on the distance they need to travel.

If you need an installer to install the stone for you, then the costs, as a general rule of thumb, should be two to three times the delivery amount.  For example, if you were to spend $250 total on the rocks, then professional installation will be $500 to $750.  To be certain on the costs, use HomeAdvisor.com to receive multiple bids via email for free.  Simply describe the job and licensed professionals can help you out.

Tips to know:

How much river rock do you need?  The amount you need will depend on how deep you want your rock and how large the rocks are.  One ton of one to three-inch rocks one layer deep will cover about 90 square feet, whereas one ton of three to six-inch rocks one layer deep will cover about 60 square feet.  To be certain, ask the supplier you’re working with to make sure you’re purchasing enough.

Be careful if purchasing river rock that’s too small, because, from a distance, it can often look similar to gravel.  If using these rocks as a walkway, try to avoid purchasing rocks that are too big since it can be hard to walk on.  This rock will work best in a patio space, as a walkway or in place of grass.  It can also work well around plants or shrubs since it can act as mulch, preventing weed growth in your landscaping.

How can I save money?

There’s a good chance there will be a few landscaping suppliers in your area.  Check with a few to see what they charge, and if you need it shipped, don’t forget to get the delivery fee as well.

How much does a skateboard cost?

On average, a skateboard can vary anywhere from $20 to as much as $300 per board.  We took a look at the most popular retailers that sell skateboards and included the price average inside the table below.

A professional skateboard, similar to ones you see on TV and in professional tournaments, can run around $100 to $250.  If the skateboard has to be customized, the price can increase substantially.

A skateboard that includes no graphics can run $50 to $110.  Considered a higher quality, skaters can add decals and their own graphics in the future, but most skateboards will come in one solid color.  The only reason they are cheaper is that they lack the graphics;  the quality may still be just as good.

A mid-quality skateboard that is designed for newer skateboarders is going to be within the $40 to $65 range.  This skateboard is not ideal for professional circuits, but good enough to get the job done.

Skateboards designed for children often are the lowest in terms of price.  These boards can range anywhere from $20 to $45.

If you were to build your own skateboard, then plan on spending about $30 to $80 for the deck, $15 for the bearings, $35 for the trucks, $5 for the grip tape and another $30 or so for the wheels.

For example, the highly rated Powell Golden Dragon skateboard retails for $50 to $75, while the PRO Skateboard Complete retails for $24 to $30.

According to a Wikihow.com guide, a longboard can cost $120 to $500 while a classic board can cost upwards of $400.

Members on Reddit.com discussed this question and stated you should be prepared to spend $120 for a quality board.

RetailerAverage Price
Amazon$20 to $65
Target$15 to $60
Vans$25 to $75
Walmart$12 to $50
Zumiez$30 to $85 (only the deck)

Skateboard overview

A skateboard, when purchased from most retailers, will come with the deck, wheels and even graphics.  Graphics can be optional, but if chosen, they will be embedded on the board.

A skateboard deck will come in a variety of widths, including a full size (7.5-inches or larger), mid-size (7.3-inches), mini (7 inches) and micro (6.5 inches).  A full size, for example, will be intended for those who are five feet or taller, whereas a mid-size will be designed for those in the 54 to 60-inch range.

Types of skateboards

Shortboard

A shortboard will be the shortest type and will be designed more for getting air and performing tricks.

Cruiser

A cruiser will have a kicktail, making it easy to maneuver throughout the streets, and will be designed to do just that — cruise around.

Old-school board

An old-school board will have a flat nose, kicktails and will be asymmetrical with a wider nose than other types.  This board sits lower to the ground with larger wheels and will the choice for those who want to ride ramps or pools.

Longboard

Lastly, a longboard will be just that — a longer-than-average skateboard.  This board is designed for downhill racing due to its symmetrical shape.

What are the extra costs?

Adding graphics to an existing skateboard can cost $1 to $10 per decal.  The price of a decal will depend on if you’re purchasing one in stock or need one customized.

While optional, experts may recommend that you set aside a pair of shoes solely for skateboarding.  A good pair of skateboarding shoes will cost around $50 to $100.

If a skateboard deck is purchased on its own, wheels will be an additional cost to consider.

Experts recommend gripping your board before riding to provide that extra “grip.”

Tips to know:

Try your local skate shop as this will give you the opportunity to try the board in person.  It is a great way to get a feel for the board.  A board won’t be a board because sizes will vary.

How can I save money?

To save money, purchase a deck that has no graphics.  Plain colored skateboards will cost a lot less than those with decals and graphics.  Even if you find a skateboard with a nice graphic, keep in mind it will scratch up quite a bit as you ride it.

If you’re serious about skating, professional skaters recommend going to a local skate shop to find a quality board.  Cheaper skateboards, often found at your local retailers, will be made from a cheaper material and can break down quicker because of it.

How Much Does an EKG Cost?

An EKG, also known as an electrocardiogram, is a test that will examine the heart by reading the electrical levels it emits.   This test is often done to see if you’re at risk of heart disease and/or a heart attack.  It’s also recommended for breathing problems, tiredness or unusual sounds coming from the heart.

During the procedure, electrodes are placed on several spots on the body and these electrical impulses will result in lines on pieces of paper or the computer screen.  An EKG is a painless procedure that takes less than 30 minutes to process.  The cost of this test can vary depending on your geographical location, the hospital, and if insurance is involved.

How much does an EKG cost?

An EKG will consist of two parts: the actual test and the reading of the results.  The average EKG cost will be anywhere from $200 to as much as $2,000 without any type of insurance.  The nationwide average, according to our research, is about $800.  With this type of test, hospitals across the United States greatly vary in their pricing, so it’s important to get as many quotes as possible.  Most hospitals can provide a quote over the phone.

If you have health insurance, you will only be responsible for your co-pays or deductibles.  Since all health insurance policies vary, it is best to consult with your health insurance provider to know exactly what is covered.  With insurance, as long as the EKG is deemed medically necessary, will be well within the $100 and $500 range.

Live Science says the costs can greatly vary, ranging anywhere from $137 to $1,200.  This cost range was found when researchers called 20 hospitals in the Philadelphia area and had asked how much the procedure would cost.

EKG overview

Your doctor will order an EKG if he or she suspects you have symptoms of heart disease or you have been experiencing heart pain.  These tests will determine how the heart is working and decide how the problem should be treated.

During the procedure, you will lay flat on a table, and electrodes will be attached to the body.  About 12 to 15 electrodes will then be attached to the chest, arms and legs.  These leads are then attached to an EKG machine; the results will be read tracking any electrical activity.

The test, as long as everything goes according to plan, will last a few minutes.  Often, the doctor may be able to provide the results immediately; however, if the test showed a problem with the heart, another test may be required.

What are the extra costs?

Having a professional read the results of the EKG could be charged separately outside of the test.  Each clinic will have its own policies.  A reading should cost no more than $50 to $100.

If the doctor wants to run a stress test along with the EKG, this could be another $200 to $400~

If the results are abnormal, the doctor may want to repeat the EKG and/or recommend other tests for the near future.  For example, depending on your situation, blood work may be required ahead of time as well.  Depending on the condition, each blood work test could cost $200 or more, but it could be less with insurance fees.

Tips to know:

Before this procedure is done, the office may ask that you shave small areas on your body.  The clinic will provide you with step-by-step instructions on what to do before the procedure begins.

Unlike most tests that have certain food and drink requirements, an EKG does not require any sort of fasting.

Always try to go to a primary care physician if you can.  Emergency rooms can cost almost 50+ percent more than a standard doctor’s office.  Of course, if it is an emergency, you should not question it and should have it done at a local ER.

With so many cardiologists in your area, consider calling a few to see what they charge.  Most offices will be more than happy to provide an estimate over the phone.

How can I save money?

Health insurance, will no doubt, lower the costs.  If you do not have any sort of health insurance policy, consider looking for a policy through eHealthInsurance.com.  Health insurance is not as expensive as many people think.  In fact, some high-deductible policies are less than $150 per month.

Patients who do not have any sort of health insurance will often find that doctor’s offices will provide some sort of discount as long as the bill is paid in full with cash or a credit card; patients can save upwards of 40 percent this way.

Those who meet certain income requirements can find clinics in the area that may provide free services.  Check with local government agencies to see if you qualify.

Like government services, many hospitals are happy to work with patients who meet minimum income requirements.  These hospitals can set up payment plans or offer heavy discounts.

If you can, try to avoid the emergency room or urgent care.  Unless it’s needed RIGHT NOW, a private office will be a lot cheaper.  Remember, any serious condition should be looked at immediately.

How Much Do Akita Puppies Cost?

Originating from Japan, the Akita is known for its double coat that is similar to a Husky dog.  Notable around the globe, this independent dog can be found in many households throughout the world.  Found in dog competitions and shows, the Akita is very smart and is known to grow up to 28 inches tall and can weigh more than 125 pounds.

How much do Akita puppies cost?

The cost of an Akita will greatly depend upon the age, the breeder selling it, the quality of the dog, its bloodline and what’s going to be included with the adoption.  On average, an Akita puppy can cost anywhere from $900 to as much as $1,700.  The typical AKC-registered Akita pup, according to our research, will be in the $1,000 to $1,500 range, and with this price, you should, at a minimum, receive a one-year written health guarantee, AKC paperwork, a guarantee that no health defects will occur in the future and a spay/neuter contract if applicable.  These AKC numbers can be backed up by the classified ads on the official AKC Marketplace.

On the other hand, a dog with no paperwork and no parent testing can often be a lot less, usually in the $500 to $1,000 range.

PuppyFind.com, a popular dog classified website, has close to 300 listings at the time of this writing. Most of the classified ads have prices ranging from as little as $750 to more than $1,900.

Members on Reddit.com discussed the price of an Akita and said it would depend on the testings, paperwork and who you adopt it from.  Most agreed the price will be in the $1,000 range, but much more if you were to have it imported from Japan.

What is going to be included in the adoption fee?

A reputable breeder should include a health checkup by a licensed vet, a health guarantee, up-to-date vaccinations, spay/neutering and/or a microchip.

What are the extra costs?

If the dog has to be shipped overseas or to another state, shipping fees will apply.  These shipping fees can start at $150 and can be as high as $400 if shipped via an airline.

Recurring costs, as with any pet, such as food, routine/surprise vet bills, and supplies.  It’s best to budget at least $50 to $85 per month for a healthy dog and much more if your dog were to come down with a health problem.

Training is highly recommended for any puppy to teach it, at the minimum, the basics of sit, lay down and stay.  Training classes, depending on where you go, can start at $75 and go up from there.

The Akita needs to be brushed weekly to remove any dead hair; if you don’t have any time, then it’s wise to schedule a professional grooming appointment at least once per month.

Tips to know:

If healthy, its lifespan can range anywhere from 9 to 11 years.

As for its temperament, Puppy Find says the dog is known to be brave, smart and requires a lot of human companionship.  The dog doesn’t prefer other dogs around as it can be very territorial and have aggressive tendencies due to its natural instincts.  Only consider other household pets if you’re able to raise the dog at an early age while introducing it to other household pets.

The Akita’s coat is a double coat:  the outer coat will be straight and coarse, while the undercoat will be softer and denser.  Popular colors include red, white and streaked.  It will shed its coat twice per year.

The average Akita will measure 24 to 28 inches high and can weigh upwards of 75 to 120 pounds.  Females will be 20 percent smaller than a male.

The Akita is known to have a lot of stamina, and because of this, it will require a lot of exercise throughout the day.  Not meant for confined spaces such as an apartment or condo, an Akita will do well with daily walks and a fenced in yard.

This breed is prone to hip disorders, eye problems and knee issues.

Akitas are banned in some areas, and some homeowners’ insurance policies may revoke your policy if they were to find out you owned this breed.  Due to the aggressive tendencies, some friends, neighbors and/or family members may be intimidated by the breed.

How can I save money?

Consider checking out your local shelter to see if any dogs are up for adopting that either resembles this breed or if you’re lucky, the breed itself.  Rescue groups and the Humane Society often have adoption fees for less than $200.

How Much Does a Windshield Wiper Motor Replacement Cost?

The windshield wiper motor is the part of the car that makes the windshield wipers work properly.  If it were to fail, the wipers won’t work, which as you could imagine, would cause quite a  few problems when it’s raining or snowing out.

The cost of fixing a wiper motor will depend on the make and model of car and the mechanic fixing the problem.

How much does windshield motor replacement cost?

On average, the entire job, including parts, should cost around $125 to $425 if you were to use a mechanic.  If you were to do it on your own and bypass the mechanic, most parts will cost $50 to $300; however, expect a much higher price if your car were a vintage model.  With the average job taking 0.8 hours, labor should be in the $75 to $115 ballpark, depending on the shop’s hourly rate.

The Auto Parts Warehouse, for example, says you should be prepared to budget $60 to $400+

Car Make and ModelPartsLaborAverage Total
Honda Civic$90$80$170
Ford F-150$130$95$225
Chevy Cruze$100$80$180
Ford Taurus$275$125$400
Toyota Camry$300$100$400
Dodge Caravan$150$100$250

Windshield motor replacement overview

Before the windshield motor is even considered the culprit, the mechanic will first inspect the fuse to make sure it hasn’t blown.  Next, if the fuse is okay, the power to the windshield wiper switch will be checked, followed by the power coming from the switch.  If power is going to switch, but the switch won’t send power back to the motor, then the wiring or switch will need to be replaced.  However, if the switch is sending power, but the motor isn’t running, power at the motor will need to be checked.  If power reaches the motor, but the motor won’t run, then the motor will be the culprit.

During the process, the mechanic will take apart the motor and all the wires connected to the motor will be detached.  Depending on your car, the entire assembly, including the bracket, shaft and windshield spacer, may need to be replaced as well.  Carefully taking apart the motor, it will be removed from the car.  Note that each car will store its motor in different areas.  Some cars have it located near the engine while others are housed near the compartment.  After the windshield motor has been taken out, a new one will replace the old one.  The wires will be connected and it should be ready to go.  The average job takes less than two hours to complete.

What are the extra costs?

Most mechanics may want to replace the wiper blades once the motor has been replaced.  Wiper blades should cost less than $20.

Tips to know:

Before you even consider replacing the motor, make sure the fuse has not blown.  It would be silly to replace a whole motor for $300 when all it actually needed was a $2 fuse.

Always be sure to get the exact motor for your make and model; if not, the part won’t fit.  Pay very close attention to the voltage.  Motors, today, will come either as a 6, 12 or 24-volt.  Search this Amazon car parts search engine to see which parts would work.

Common symptoms of a bad windshield motor may include slow-moving wipers, wipers that do not turn off, wipers operating at one speed and/or wipers unable to stop in its natural position.

How can I save money?

The job can be done fairly easily if you know a little bit about fixing cars.  There are many step-by-step guides on the web that can walk you through the process.  Generally, if you complete the job on your own, you will be able to save at least $100 to $200.

A remanufactured windshield motor can do just as good of a job, but for a fraction of the cost.  If buying a remanufactured part, make sure it comes with a limited warranty.

How Much Do Wigs Cost?

Wigs can be used for a variety of purposes.  A wig can be used for a cancer patient going through chemotherapy, alopecia or someone who is simply looking for a different hairstyle.  Regardless of the situation, the cost of a wig will vary on the type of hair, the brand, hair length, color, hair style, cap size, quality and the store selling it.

How much do wigs cost?

On average, a synthetic wig can cost anywhere from as little as $30 to as much as $400.  A synthetic wig will look and feel like real hair, but it requires less attention than real hair.

A wig made from real hair can cost anywhere from $650 to as much as $2,500.

We researched a handful of retailers online and were able to come up with our own estimates listed in the table below.

Women’s Health says a synthetic wig can cost as little as $3 to as much as $3,000 for a real hair wig.

Oprah’s official website says today, a synthetic wig can start under $100, and if you plan on wearing it every day, it can last up to six months.

Type of WigAverage Price
Synthetic short wig$25 to $300
Synthetic medium wig$25 to $350
Synthetic long wig$50 to $400
Synthetic hand-tied wig$200 to $450
Synthetic lace front wig$100 to $400
Natural short wig$50 to $400
Natural medium length wig$50 to $750+
Natural long wig$100 to $1,500+
Human hair hand-tied wig$800 to $1,500+
Natural lace front wig$200 to $1,000+
Natural monofilament wig$400 to $1,300+
Half wigs$50 to $150
Men wigs$50 to $1,000
Custom$500 to $5,000+

Wigs overview

There are two kinds of wigs on the market:  synthetic and real.  A synthetic wig, almost always, is going to be a lot cheaper than real hair.  These types of wig will come with a set style that you are not able to alter.  Using a sticky adhesive pad, these wigs can stick to your head without slipping, and if taken care of properly, these wigs can last more than a year.

Wigs made from real hair will come from hair that was donated, often from Asia and India.  These wigs can come in many lengths, colors and are able to last more than five years if taken care of properly.  Like your real hair, this wig can be styled and can be treated as if it were your own.  Depending on the type, the washing instructions can vary.

If you already have hair, your hair will be tucked back into a wire cap to flatten it out and create a smoother surface.  A headband with small “teeth” can also be used to keep the wig in place.  If you don’t have hair, a bonded wig, which is made with double-sided tape, will stick in place, causing it not to slip.

Just like a natural hair style, a wig can come in virtually any size, length and/or color.  If you can imagine, you should be able to purchase it

What are the extra costs?

Customized wigs, where you’re able to choose the color and length, can often get into the thousands, especially if you decide to choose a well-known designer.

Some wigs will require a professional cleaning.  Since most wigs cannot be washed in a washing machine, they will have to be taken to a professional cleaner for service.

To maintain your wig, experts recommend placing it on a wig form while not being used.  This helps the hair maintain its shape and prevent it from rubbing against a surface.  A wig form is relatively cheap and should be found for as little as a few dollars.  Maintaining it also involves various beauty materials.  For example, a synthetic wig will need a Woolite-like shampoo and fabric softener as a conditioner.  As for human hair, a moisturizing shampoo and protein-based conditioner will keep the hair soft and hydrated.

A wig, unfortunately, won’t last forever, so plan on replacing it every six to 24 months, depending on how much you use it.

Tips to know:

If going through cancer, check with your local hospital to see if they can recommend any organizations in the area that offer wigs for free to cancer patients.  Also, ask friends or fellow cancer patients in the hospitals.  Referrals are going to be the best way to find quality wigs at a low cost.

If possible, try to pick out your wig before the chemotherapy begins.  You will have more energy and the stylist will be able to see your original color.  This is a great way for the stylist to match your wig with your original look.  BreastCancer.org also recommends cutting your hair short since it will be less traumatic when you start to lose your hair.

Try a wig on in person if possible.  Check out the company’s reviews online and be sure to ask about their return policy if you were to find something wrong with it in the near future.  If you don’t know what kind of wig you want, look online or in a magazine to find a style you like.  A good retailer should be able to help you find a wig that looks similar to what you want.

Try to avoid those that have a liner as this can often cause itching or rashes.

How can I save money?

Some organizations offer wigs to those who meet certain requirements.  These requirements include a certain age and income.

While a real hair wig can cost more, it is going to last up to three times longer; plus, you can alter it as if it were your own hair.  Try to focus more on the quality rather than the price tag.  If you can’t afford it, a synthetic wig can do just fine since it won’t require much in terms of attention and/or care.

Consider going with shorter hair in the beginning.  Shorter hair is not only going to be cheaper, it is going to be a lot easier to manage.

Health insurance companies can cover a portion, if not all, of a wig purchase.  If you do not have a health insurance policy, consider using eHealthInsurance.com to find a health insurance company in your area.

The price of a side of beef usually depends on how much meat is purchased, the butcher you purchase from, geographical location and quality of meat.  On average, a complete side of beef can vary anywhere from $3 to $4.50 per “hanging weight” pound, including the processing.  The hanging weight is considered the weight after the cow has been skinned and “hung.” Some butchers may include everything in this estimate, while some may charge an additional $0.50 to $1.25 per pound to process.

Aside from charging by the hanging weight, some butchers may also charge by the live weight or by the processed weight.

When everything is processed and ready for the freezer, the weight, according to most research we did, will be in the $5 to $9.50 per pound, and most orders will yield more than 125 to 200+ pounds of edible meat.

A member on Reddit.com, for instance, asked if $6 per pound for a side of beef was acceptable, and most agreed it’s the best thing to do when buying meat in bulk.

Wilson Beef Farms, for example, lists its prices on its website.  A split side of beef, according to them, will be sold by the hanging weight, approximately 150 pounds, and this is the weight before the cow is trimmed and cut.   The cost, $4.46 per pound, totals close to $669, with the average customer taking home 100 pounds worth of meat.

frugalupstate.com has an amazing guide showing us what she paid for her side of beef.  She explains what to look out for, how to find it and what you should do to properly store it.  According to her blog post, she paid $3 per pound for the hanging weight and another $0.60 per pound to process.

Monnett Farms, yet another farm that lists its prices on its website, says they charge $5.50 per pound, and a side of beef purchased from them could yield as much as 250 to 300 pounds.

Side of beef overview

The amount of meat that you can get off of a side of beef varies depending on the size of the cow. Usually, a side of beef can weigh anywhere around 100 to 350+ pounds.  The butcher will either charge by the hanging weight, as explained above, or they will charge by the meat it produces.  The weight, as well, can often be hard to estimate.  A side of beef can feed a family of four for close to a year.

The butcher will cut the beef for you and commonly offer what they will include once the side of beef has been processed, or they may ask you specifically what kind of cuts you want to be included.  Butchers will often want you to wait two to three+ weeks before picking up your order or sometimes more if they are in demand.  In most circumstances, the butcher will first want to know if you want any specific cuts, and once the order is confirmed, the cow will either be butchered on site or sent to a third-party, depending on the company policy.  The beef should then be dry-aged before being cut for up to 10 days to help tenderize the meat, but again, this time could vary depending on the butcher’s policy.  After this duration, the meat will be cut, packaged and will be frozen until you’re ready to pick it up, which is usually two to three weeks after you placed your order and put down a deposit.

Common cuts, once processed, can include a chuck roast, chuck steaks, arm roasts, stew beef, short ribs, neck bones for soup, rib steaks, rib roasts, steaks, top roasts, rolled rump roasts, sirloin tip roasts, cube steak and ground beef.

As longed as vacuum sealed properly, it can last 18 to 24 months.

To find a side of beef, talk with your local farmers, a butcher or simply search online to see if any farms list pricing on their website.  LocalHarvest.org is a great option as well as it can connect you with local farmers who are selling beef.

What are the extra costs?

Butchers will either wrap your cuts with butcher paper or vacuum seal.  If the butcher uses butcher paper, then there’s a good chance they will charge extra to vacuum seal your meats.

The cost to ship online or deliver the meat can range anywhere from $20 to $100= depending on the distance as well as the dollar amount of your order.  If you choose to pick it up, this fee can be waived.

Tips to know:

Get your cuts the way you plan on using it.  For example, if you were to use two pounds of ground beef per recipe, then it would be wise to ask for two-pound packages.  Most butchers will be able to do this for you.

Be specific on the cuts you want.  Some butchers may throw away certain parts you may want to use.

Many butchers, according to a member on the Reddit thread mentioned above, said you can get the tongue, liver, heart and bones for free.  Ask before they throw it away as most will be happy to give it to you.

Be prepared for a lot of freezer space.  The average side of beef can fill a freezer four to five feet deep.  Plan on one cubic foot of freezer for every 15 pounds.

How can I save money?

If you have a lot of friends or family members who would like to chip in and get their share, this is a good way to save some money.  If you happen to only purchase choice cuts rather than a variety, you can get a better offer buying the meat separately at your local grocery store.

Instead of purchasing the entire side of beef, consider purchasing the meat by the pound.  Most cuts can vary $2 to $7 per pound depending on many factors.

Buying a side of beef may seem like a costly investment, but when you compare the prices to a grocery store, the quality will not only be higher, but cheaper as well.

How Much Does a Vizsla Cost?

The Vizsla dog breed originated from Hungary and is known as a sporting dog.  One of the smallest types of pointer retrievers today, the Vizsla is great for hunting and is known as a loving family companion dog.

The cost of a Vizsla will depend on the age, the breeder selling it, quality, its parents/bloodline, geographical location and what’s included with the adoption.

How much does a Vizsla cost?

On average, a Vizsla puppy older than six to eight weeks with all of the appropriate paperwork can cost anywhere from $700 to as much as $1,200 based on the factors mentioned above.   However, from time to time, you may be able to find a puppy from a “champion” line of parents going for as high as $1,500 to $2,000+.  Remember that a higher price does not necessarily mean that you are getting a high-quality dog.  Be sure to research the breeder from which you are adopting.  Check out our table below to see what breeders across America were charging.

On a forum thread on the website VizslaForums.com, forum members claimed that you should be able to find a puppy that is less than $1,200.

NextDayPets.com, an online classified ad service for pets, has close to 100+ classified ads at the time of this writing.  On average, the listings range anywhere from $600 to around $1,000.  Most of the breeders we looked at offered registration, up-to-date vaccinations, a vet exam, health certificate and guarantee.

On the official AKC Marketplace, most of the breeders we saw, who listed their prices, often charged $1,300 to $1,500.

Geographical LocationPrice Listed
Billings, MT$1,000
Boston, MA$1,400
Charleston, SC$850
Cleveland, OH$800
Des Moines, IA$900
Detroit, MI$800
Houston, TX$1,200
Minneapolis, MN$1,200
Mobile, AL$900
Orlando, FL$1,000
San Diego, CA$950
Santa Fe, NM$1,600

What is going to be included in the adoption fee?

If the puppy is registered with the AKC, the breeder will provide the appropriate paperwork.

Most reputable breeders will include all the necessary vaccinations, deworming, health records, a health checkup performed by a licensed vet and a written health guarantee.

Some breeders may also include a microchip.

Shelters and local rescues will include startup packages that include starter items such as flea control, sample foods, and coupons.

What are the extra costs?

Obvious recurring costs, as with any pet, in the future need to be considered.  Food, accessories, shelter, vet visits, and the necessary start-up supplies.  It is best to budget about $50+ per month to take care of a healthy dog.  The costs could be much more if the dog were to come down with a disease or costly surgery.

Obedience classes are highly recommended, especially at a younger age.  These classes can start at $75 and go up from there.

Shipping charges can apply if the dog has to be shipped by an airline or via a ground transportation method.  The cost to ship a dog can cost anywhere from $150 to $350, depending on the distance traveled.

Tips to know:

This type of breed, from most of the ads we looked at, will often have their tails and ears docked when born.

Their personality is known to be very active, agile, affectionate and gentle.

Males, on average, will measure 22 to 24 inches tall, while females will measure slightly smaller, 21 to 23 inches tall.  As for weight, males will weigh 55 to 60 pounds, and a female will be, again, slightly smaller at 44 to 55 pounds.

If healthy, a Vizla can live 12 to 14 years.

These dogs are known to be some of the best dogs in terms of training.  Equipped with attractive characteristics, this dog is known to show a lot of devotion to their owners.

These dogs are required to have a great amount of exercise every day.  For that reason, these dogs aren’t recommended for those who live in apartments or condos.  Failing to do so can lead to boredom, which eventually turns into destruction.  If the dog is allowed outside, be sure to supervise at all times.  Due to their hunting nature, it will be in their instincts to want to explore and hunt.

Epilepsy and seizures are major problems found; also occurring are eye disorders, skin diseases and hip and eye disorders.

A Vizsla needs a great amount of companionship and won’t like being left alone for long periods of time.  If so, they can become destructive, bark consistently or chew uncontrollably.  If you work most of the day or are rarely home, then this dog may not be for you.

Does a Vizsla shed?  The dog has a shorter coat than average, and for the most part, they don’t shed. However, in the spring and fall months, they will shed their entire coat

How can I save money?

Try working with a local shelter or non-profit such as the Humane Society.  While most breeders can be reputable, a shelter can offer lower prices since they are not in the business to make a profit.  While rare, if this type of breed can be found at a shelter, it will more than likely be an older dog.  Even if you can’t find this breed, you may be able to find a mix or a dog that closely resembles it.  For instance, the Vizsla Pitbull, Vizsla Lab and Vizsla Boxer mix are commonly found in some shelters.

How Much Does Pizza Dough Cost?

Pizza dough, as you may know, is the most integral part of the whole pizza, even more than the toppings.  No matter what kind of pizza you choose or what toppings you enjoy, every pizza will have a crust made of dough.

Some people consider the crust to be the best part, while others never eat the crust.  Most pizza dough is just like bread, mostly consisting of flour, salt, water, egg, and oil.  Pizza dough is usually kneaded by hand or by a slow speed mixer.

How much does pizza dough cost?

The cost of pizza dough will depend on the quality, brand, if it’s fresh and where it’s being purchased from.  On average, the price for the pizza dough ranges from $2 to $4 per 16-ounce bag.  These are pre-made bags that will only require water.  For instance, the highly rated Betty Crocker Pizza Mix and Pillsbury pizza dough retails for around $1 to $3 at your local grocery store.

At Trader Joe’s, for example, their 16-ounce bag of pizza dough in the refrigerated section retails for $1.29.  It comes in three flavors:  regular, whole wheat and garlic.  Whole Foods also has a pizza dough for a similar price.

A blog post on Recipe.com talked about pizza dough at their local grocery store.  At Safeway, for example, you could purchase a bag of frozen dough for close to $1.70.  Comparing making dough to purchasing it at the store, the verdict, which you may have expected, was to make the dough at home to save money.

A larger purchase, such as a five-pound sack, can cost close to $15 or about $3 per pound.   For restaurants, larger cases, which often hold close to 100 dough balls, will retail for about $1 to $1.35 per ball.

Tips to know:

Pizza dough will be found in the refrigerated section, freezer or baked goods section of the grocery store.  Box mixes will use a power that needs water added to it, while a refrigerated pizza dough, such as the Trader Joe’s mentioned above, will be found wrapped in a clear bag in the refrigerated section.  This type of dough just needs to be brought to room temperature and stretched out for use.  You can also find pizza dough already baked, usually in the pasta/sauce aisles.  This type of dough will be in a clear bag and will be rolled out, ready for the toppings, cheese and sauce.

Pizza dough can be frozen to prolong the shelf life.  If freezing, defrost it for a few hours before you intend to use it.

To store unused dough, slide it into a freezer bag and seal, making sure all of the air is out.  If you have a FoodSaver or vacuum sealer, then this could work as well.  Place it in the freezer and it can last up to three months.  When you’re ready to use it, simply take it out, let it thaw (about 12 hours) to room temperature and enjoy.

How can I save money?

Although several stores carry pizza dough, consider making the dough from scratch.  Many of your dough recipes will only require flour, yeast, sugar and oil.   With these ingredients, you should be able to make your own dough for less than $1.

Store-branded premade pizza dough will almost always be cheaper than the name brand and will contain the same ingredients.
