How Much Does Replacing Piston Rings Cost?

The piston ring is a split type ring that fits outside the diameter of a piston inside the engine.  The main function of a piston ring is to help seal the combustion chamber, support a heat transfer from the piston to the engine, and regulate the engine’s oil consumption.  As time goes on, the piston ring can often wear out, needing to be replaced.  If this is the case, a mechanic will often need to be called in order to resolve the problem.

How much does it cost to replace piston rings?

The cost to replace piston rings can depend on a number of factors.  This can include the make and model of a car, the type of engine, and the condition of the engine.  On average, a mechanic can charge anywhere from $1,800 to as much as $3,500+ to replace a worn out piston ring/s.  Even though the piston rings are cheap, almost all of the costs will be in the labor involved since it can sometimes take longer than 10 hours to pull apart the engine and put it back together again.

For those who want to complete the job themselves, piston rings will come in a complete set, often retailing for $75 to as much as $200; again, depending on the factors mentioned earlier.   At AutoZone, for example, a sealed power piston ring set retails for about $40 to $80.  Keep in mind these prices are for the rings and no additional parts that may be necessary to complete the job.

On the forum thread on ModdedMustangs.com, a forum member claimed it will cost around $1,500 to disassemble the motor, around $500 to pull out the piston heads, and another $700 or so to tear down the motor and rebuild it, bringing the total costs close to $2,700 at their local mechanic.

Someone on Car Talk said they were quoted $2,300 to replace the piston rings, resurface the valves and replace the valve seals.

A member on GM-Trucks.com said his service advisor at a local dealership quoted him $3,500 to replace the piston rings in his truck.

Replacing piston rings overview

Before the mechanic considers replacing the piston rings, they will first run a compression test to make sure the rings are the problem.  Oftentimes, a valve seal can share similar symptoms as that of a piston ring, so this is why it’s important to run the test to see where the problem is truly coming from.    During a compression test, the mechanic will open the spark plug, fill the cylinder with oil, remove the EFI fuse and crank the engine.  If the test appears to be good or considered average, then there’s a good chance it’s the piston rings; however, if the test is below average, there could be a problem with the valve seals.

Replacing the piston rings can be a rather complex process, and in some cases, it may not be possible due to the micro finish on the cylinder bores since it won’t “seat” well.  The mechanic will have to completely disassemble the car’s engine, recondition the car’s cylinders, and then reassemble all the parts.  This is a very labor intensive project, often taking 10+ hours to completely resolve the problem.  At $85 to $100 per hour, this alone could be $850+ in labor costs.

What are the extra costs?

The piston rings can be just a part of the problem.  A mechanic may also recommend other parts of the engine be replaced such as the pistons and/or gaskets, for example.  In fact, there could be times where the mechanic will just outright recommend a new or rebuilt engine altogether as it will be a cheaper route to take.

Tips to know:

If your engine misfires, you see smoke from the exhaust, there’s not enough accelerating power or you’re noticing excessive oil consumption, then this could be a sign your piston rings are going bad.  Excessive oil consumption, for example, could be caused by the sludge buildup near the oil control rings.  While some special cleaners can sometimes resolve the issue by cleaning the rings, this isn’t always the case.

Usually, when the piston rings start to wear, there’s a good chance other parts within the engine are going to fail soon or later.

How can I save money?

Talk with a mechanic before replacing the piston heads.  More often than not, some may recommend that you replace the entire motor rather than just the piston heads because there will be times when replacing the piston rings won’t resolve the problem.  Even though replacing the engine may sound pricey, it can be a cheaper alternative.  If a piston ring is worn or broken it can’t be repaired.  To do the job right, you may have to install new pistons, along with the rings and newer bearings.

If you are going to hire a mechanic, try getting a few quotes over the phone.  Simply tell them the make and model of your car, the condition of the engine, and what needs to be done if you understand the problem.  While some may want to see it in person, many will be happy to give you a ballpark estimate over the phone.

Piranha overview

Depending on the type of piranha, most can often grow as large as 18 inches; however, the average size is around five to seven inches.  The lifespan, as long as healthy, can live up to seven years.

You can usually find a piranha for sale, if it’s legal in your area, either at a local aquarium/fish store, online via specialized breeders or even on eBay.  If it’s illegal, most reputable aquariums won’t ship it to your state.

What are the extra costs?

An aquarium will be required in order to properly store your fish.  An aquarium can widely vary depending upon what kind and size you need.  The average tank can start at $500 to as much as $5,000 for a customized tank.   Plan on budgeting at least $500 to $2,000 for the tank.  An aquarium for piranhas, at a minimum, should be at least four to five feet wide and two feet deep.  Aquariumfish.net recommends an exterior power filter with a bio wheel and a one-fourth inch of gravel on the surface.  The water temperature should be 75 to 80 degrees.

A piranha’s diet will vary depending on what you are going to feed one.  The average diet can include meats such as shrimp, bloodworms, or even dried meat pellets.  As they grow older, they will eat on chunks of beef and/or fish.  It is best to budget $25 to $75 per fish, per month.

Purchasing a fish online can often lead to higher shipping costs.  If you are going to purchase a fish online, the shipping fees can start at $5 and go up from there.

Since these fish tend to do better in schools, it’s recommended you purchase three to five at a time.

Tips to know:

While these fish have a reputation of being bloodthirsty, they are often shy when placed in a tank.  The only time you will more than likely see action is when they are placed in groups and are feeding.  Ask yourself why you want to purchase one?  Remember that if you’re looking for some great action, you’re probably looking in the wrong place.

Some states regulate and even prohibit owning this type of fish.  Be sure to check your local laws before considering a purchase.  For example, they can’t be bred, sold or distributed in California.

Piranhas will do better in water with a lower pH than the average aquarium.

How can I save money?

Since piranhas often do better in groups, it is best to purchase more than one.  Most pet stores will often sell them in groups that range anywhere from five to as much as ten at a time.  The more you purchase at once, the more you should be able to save.

Kiwi can be eaten on its own, mixed with juice, baked or prepared as a side garnish for an entree.

Tips to know:

Kiwis can be used as a garnish to add your favorite drink or even as a great addition to any fruit salad.  You can also preserve kiwis to exponentially increases its flavor.

After cutting, be sure to eat immediately since a kiwi has a special enzyme that’s known to have tenderizing effects.  These effects can soften the kiwi as it sits.

When you choose a kiwi, look for unwrinkled and unblemished skins.  A good kiwi will have a rough and fuzzy feel to it.  If it doesn’t yield any pressure when you touch it, then it’s best to allow it to ripen at room temperature away from the sun.

Store them at room temperature away from other fruits since they will ripen quickly.

Healthline.com says a kiwi fruit can offer many benefits, including treating asthma, aiding digestion, boosting the immune system, managing blood pressure, reducing blood clotting and protecting against vision loss.

Not all kiwis will be fuzzy as there are some varieties such as the golden and smooth bronze kiwi has non-fuzzy surface.

How can I save money?

Buying in bulk is often the easiest way to save money.  As stated above, your warehouse stores, such as Costco and Sam’s Club, will often have the cheapest prices.

How Much Does Limestone Cost?

Limestone is a type of rock that is used extensively in different industries such as construction and as animal feed.  Aside from these basic uses, limestone is also used in mines where it provides illumination and reduces the amount of cold dust stirred by the different activities held within the mine.  Cement is probably the most famous byproduct of limestone, but most of the time, limestone is purchased for landscaping or a home improvement project.

How much does limestone cost per ton?

Because limestone is so readily available, the cost can be quite low.  It is pretty inexpensive and can cost next to nothing to purchase and use.  The price will simply depend on the amount of limestone that you will purchase as well as the company you’re purchasing from.  The cost of limestone will depend on the amount purchased, quality, type, if delivery is involved, geographical location and where it’s purchased from.  On average, plan on spending anywhere from $10 to as much as $55 per ton.

Ohio Mulch, for example, lists its prices online and charges $43.99 per ton.

Young’s Sand and Gravel, another landscaping supplier, lists its prices on its website as well.  According to the price list, all limestone, with the exception of #8 will cost $20 per ton.

Limestone overview

Limestone, when purchased from a local landscaping supplier, is often used as a stone for either drainage or for a driveway.  As mentioned above, it has other uses as well.  This stone will have a gray-white color and is roughly the size of a quarter.  Some suppliers may crush it into smaller sizes with corners and edges, while others will leave it as is in its natural form, which is similar to that of a round pebble.,

Common sizes available include # 10 screenings [Powder to 1/4″], #8 [3/8″], #57 [3/4″ to 1″], #4 [1-1/2″ to 2-1/2″], #411 [#57 and #10 mixed] and #304 [#4 and #10 mixed].  #57 is recommended as a base for concrete or asphalt, or as a base underneath a deck.  #411 will be commonly used for a retaining wall or when installing paving stones.   Three-Z, Inc. says the smaller the stone will be, the smoother the finish is.  Also, the softer the area you’re working with is, the larger the stone you will want to start with as you add additional layers of smaller stone.

What are the extra costs?

The cost to deliver the limestone depends on the distance traveled and the amount of limestone that will be purchased.  On average, delivery can start from $100 and go up from there depending upon how much stone has to be delivered.  Some companies may include the delivery if you purchase a minimum amount.

Landscaping and labor costs, if needed, can be another cost to budget for.  The average landscaper will charge anywhere between $15 to $35 per hour.

How can I save money?

Many landscape suppliers will offer a bulk discount if you purchase a certain amount.  For example, some retailers may knock 10 to 20 percent off if you were to buy five tons or more.

How Much Does a Miniature Pinscher Cost?

The Miniature Pinscher, often referred to as the King of the Toys, is a smaller toy dog breed that originated in Germany and is part of the International Kennel Club. This dog is often confused with the miniature Doberman because of the many similarities.  It has been said that this breed is a cross between the Dachshund and the Greyhound, and have been created to closely mimic the Doberman Pinscher, even though it’s not.

With a well-balanced, compact body, this Pinscher can stand as high as 10 inches and can weigh up to 10 pounds.

The cost of a Miniature Pinscher can vary depending upon the breeder selling it, the age of the dog, quality, its heritage, inclusions and geographical location.

How much does a Miniature Pinscher cost?

On average, a Miniature Pinscher puppy can cost anywhere from $600 to as much as $1,550.    From our research, dogs that weren’t registered with the AKC would be in the $500 to $900 range, while dogs with AKC paperwork would be in the $1,300 to $1,600 range.

Older dogs, if found at a local shelter or rescue group, can cost less than $300.

At the time of this writing, there were close to 150 classified listings on PuppyFind.com, an online puppy classified website.  Here, the prices ranged anywhere from as little as $600 to more than $1,300.  Most of the ads we looked at included the registration paperwork, up-to-date vaccinations, a veterinarian exam, health certificate and health guarantee.

On the various listings on the official AKC Marketplace, the costs from licensed AKC breeders were in the $1,500 range.

What is going to be included in the adoption fee?

A reputable breeder will include a health guarantee, a health checkup from a licensed veterinarian, up-to-date vaccinations and some may include a microchip, spay/neuter and small starter kit with the essentials to start taking care of your new puppy.  If the dog is going to be shipped through an airline, an airline approved shipping crate with be included.

Depending on the breeder, many opt to dock the tail, remove the side dew claws and pin back the ears.

What are the extra costs?

Shipping a dog via an airline can often cost $100 to $350 depending upon the airline.  However, since these dogs are relatively easy to find across the United States, shipping won’t be necessary most of the time.

Microchipping a dog can cost $20 to $60.

Recurring costs such as dog food, accessories, toys, and routine/surprise vet bills need to be budgeted for.

With any breed, obedience classes are highly recommended to teach the dog the basics of sit, stay and lie down.  At a minimum, consider taking professional puppy classes to help house and crate train your puppy.  Considered to be a brilliant breed, the right amount of training can help the puppy thrive.

Tips to know:

The Miniature Pinscher is alert, loyal and extremely playful.  At a young age, this puppy will require a lot of socialization in order to do well around children and/or strangers.

Its temperament, according to Next Day Pets, is known to be inquisitive, quite vigorous and very headstrong.

The coat’s sleek hair will be short in size and will come in either a clear red, stag red, black, rust, chocolate or a mix of both.  The most commonly seen colors will be either red or a black and rust mix.

The Miniature Pinscher, weighing less than 10 pounds, will be compact in size with a muscular build.  As in the picture above, it will have darker eyes, upright ears and may be cropped, depending on the breeder.  The muzzle will be medium in length, and the tail will be docked; again, depending on the breeder’s preference.

When it comes to grooming, it’s known as a very low maintenance breed; however, it’s advisable you wipe down its coat with a wet cloth to remove any excess hair.

Although the dog can do well in an apartment or a smaller setting, it will still need a half hour or so of daily exercise outside.  A few short walks per day will usually be sufficient enough.

This breed is prone to common health problems such as progressive retinal atrophy, a common disorder that may cause blindness, and joint problems.

How can I save money?

As you can see above, a puppy can be thousands of dollars to get started.  Consider going to a local adoption center to see if you can find a puppy that closely resembles this breed.  For example, you could find a popular mix such as a Miniature Pinscher Chihuahua or miniature Pinscher Dachshund.  While it may not be a Miniature Pinscher, it can still be just as loveable.  Plus, you’re helping the local rescue centers, not the breeders in it for the profits.

How Much Does a Gingivectomy Cost?

Over time, gum disease will cause your gums to become loose and eventually form pockets between the teeth and gums.  These pockets will become a safe haven for bacteria, and if the pocket becomes too deep, it can lead to tooth loss.  Unfortunately, gums affected by periodontal disease won’t reattach to the teeth and surgery is often necessary to correct the problem if antibiotics or a root planing and scaling don’t work.

A gingivectomy is a surgical procedure that removes the diseased gum tissues, reducing the pocket size and slowing down the gum disease.  It can also be used in correlation with a cosmetic procedure to help reshape and/or re-contour the outer surface of the gums.  This procedure will be absolutely necessary if you want to retain a healthy smile.

How much does a gingivectomy cost?

The estimated cost of a Gingivectomy will depend on the dentist, the procedure being used (traditional or laser), the geographical location and the condition of the gums.  On average, a Gingivectomy procedure can cost $200 to $350 per tooth or around $450 to $900 per quadrant in the mouth.  To have the gums repaired inside the whole mouth, the costs can range from $1,800 to as much as $5,000 without any sort of dental insurance.

Gingivectomy overview

This procedure is often done by a periodontist or an oral surgeon inside of a dentist office. Prior to the surgery, scaling and root planing is often performed to remove any excess bacteria and tartar from below the gum lines.  Typically, this procedure will only require a local anesthesia to numb the gums and a scalpel will be used to remove any gum disease.  A less invasive procedure via a laser gingivectomy can minimize the pain and healing process by using the same approach the scalpel does.  The goal of this surgery is to stop your gum disease from spreading, but it’s important to make healthy choices afterward to ensure the disease doesn’t progress.

The entire procedure will take less than a few hours to perform.

Following the procedure, a dressing will be placed over the gums to protect them for up to 10 days.  It’s important to follow your dentist’s post-surgery guidelines to avoid damaging your gums.  During this time, you will be limited to softer foods and can only drink fluids while the dressing is in place.

What are the extra costs?

Before the dentist performs the procedure, he or she will first check the condition of the teeth and check out the condition of your gums via an x-ray and oral examination.  A periodontic diagnosis examination may have to be performed as well to be certain what procedure is needed and how extensive the damage is.  The cost to have these tests done can cost anywhere from $350 to $400.

Tips to know:

1800dentist.com says the procedure itself isn’t painful, but you may feel some slight discomfort after the procedure has been performed.  Bleeding gums will be normal after the procedure, but as with any procedure, a risk of infection may be present.

Today, a gingivectomy can be used more than just for treating gum disease.  It can also be used as a preventative measure to remove excess gum tissue or combined with a gingivoplasty, a cosmetic procedure done to help treat uneven gums.

A dressing will be applied for up to 10 days, but it may take up to three months to see a complete healing of the affected tissues.

Gum disease, even if you have the procedure done, can progress if you don’t brush or floss regularly after the surgery.

Fiandaca Periodontics has a few gingivectomy before and after pictures to see what your gums could look like after the procedure is complete.

How can I save money?

Consider attending a local dental school to save money.  These students have had extensive training and there will be a licensed professional observing the whole procedure the entire time.

You can also save money if you have dental insurance.  You can check with your dental insurance provider for coverage for the procedure.  If you do not have a dental insurance policy, consider using services such as eHealthInsurance.com to find one.

DentalPlans.com works with thousands of dentists throughout the United States.  Similar to a health insurance policy, these discounted plans could save you hundreds, if not thousands, on just about any dental procedure.

Semi-private lessons, often with less than three people or so will cost about $40 to $90 per session, per person, depending on the studio, equipment being used and the geographical location.

Private lessons will be the costliest, cost upwards of $50 to $150 per one-hour session.

Club Pilates, for example, offers an unlimited monthly membership for about $135.

Coe Dynamics, a Pilates studio locate din Manhattan Beach, lists its prices on its website.  A new client special, for instance, will cost $155 for three private sessions.  The monthly class membership, which allows for one class per day, will cost $249 per month.  The more months you purchase at once, the more you can save.  The six-month membership would cost $199 per month instead of $249.

Some gyms such as Lifetime Fitness often offer Pilate classes free of charge to its gym members. The classes, according to our research, were often for the mat-type classes only.   Equinox, a popular club that offers these types of classes charges around $29 for a group session and close to $100 for a private session.

On this Yelp.com thread, for example, members talked about the prices they paid.  According to the thread, they had paid anywhere from $100 for a private class to as little as $30 for a Pilates reformer class.

FusePilates.com talks about why pilates is so expensive.  For starters, an instructor will often invest $4,000 in training to get where they are  This won’t include the additional certifications.  Secondly, the equipment at a higher-end Pilates studio can well exceed $3,000.  Multiply this by 10 machines and you’re already at $30,000.  Add in additional gadgets and equipment and the prices will be in the six figures.

Pilates overview

Classes can often be done one-on-one or with two to four other close friends.  If the class is done in a group setting, it can often include more than 10 people.  The average session can last 30 to 50 minutes.

There are two popular ways to do Pilates:  either via a mat or via equipment.  If you were to use a mat, this type of class will have an instructor in the front of the classroom, demonstrating exercises on ways to use your body weight as resistance.  These classes are often found at local gyms and will be the cheapest option.  The second type — via equipment — will use Pilate equipment and will be done in larger groups, usually 10 to 20 people per class.  Like the mat-type classes, a certified instructor will sue the equipment in front of the class and guide the class along the way.

What are the extra costs?

Depending on the level of the class, some equipment may be necessary such as a yoga mat, exercise ball, flex band and/or wrist weights.  Comfortable clothing, just like any other exercise class, will be highly recommended as well.

How can I save money?

If you love doing Pilates, consider signing up for package deals.  The more sessions you purchase in advance, the more you will be able to save.  Most studios often allow you to purchase up to 10 sessions in advanced.

Some courses may offer a slight discount to senior citizens, military veterans or students.

Check out Groupon or other daily deal websites to see if any studio offers are available.  If so, you may be able to try a free class or even save up to 90 percent.

If you do not have the money for a class, consider doing the class at home.  There are many DVDs that can be purchased online for less than $30 and even equipment that doesn’t cost much.  For example, a fitness band and exercise ball can work with most workouts.

As you can see, private classes will always be the most expensive route.  Unless you need it for rehabilitation purposes or want to learn the art at first, consider taking group classes to save the most money.  Also, mat classes will always be cheaper than an equipment class.

Drop-in classes will always be more than a class you signed up for.  While dropping in on a class may seemconvenientt, it may cost 10 to 20 percent more.

How much does ginger cost?

Ginger is usually sold in bulk, and the price will depend on the amount of ginger purchased and where you’re purchasing it from.  On average, fresh root ginger can cost anywhere from $3 to $15 per pound.  Smaller ginger seasonings can cost about $1.50 to $3 per ounce.

Ginger overview

Ginger has several uses that make it a unique addition to any dish.  It is spicy and stimulating to the palate but can taste sweet at the same time.  Ginger is often pickled in vinegar, added to baked goods or cooked as a raw ingredient.  If it is boiled, it can create something known as a ginger tisane, which honey is often added to.  It can also be made into a candy or wine.

Ginger is known to have many anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds such as caffeic acid, curcumin, salicylate and capsaicin.  100 grams of ginger has 17 grams of carbs, 2 grams of dietary fiber, 1.82 grams of protein, 1.7 grams of sugar and 13 mg of sodium.

Fresh ginger can be purchased at local farmers’ markets, online via Amazon or at most local grocery store produce departments.  It should be available year round.

Tips to know:

Ginger serves several purposes and is considered a very versatile type of spice.  Ginger is often used in oriental cuisines adding that much-needed spice and stimulation to the food.

Medical News Today says ginger is known to decrease the risk of obesity, heart disease and diabetes.  It can also help with digestive issues, nausea, pain reduction and inflammation.

For maximum freshness, store ginger in a cool and dry place.  If refrigerated, it can last up to two weeks; however, if frozen, it can last up to three months.  The best way to store fresh ginger, according to thekitchn.com, is either by storing it in the refrigerator wrapped in a paper towel or soaking it in a bottle of sherry.  Another method is simply by storing a whole, unpeeled ginger root in a resealable plastic bag with all of the air pushed out.

When choosing ginger in person, look for a mature root with smoother skin.  Melissas.com recommends avoiding wrinkled skin as it may indicate the root is dry and will be older.  A good root will have a fresh fragrance and will be spicy to the taste.

Fresh ginger can be substituted for ground ginger at a ratio of six to one.

How can I save money?

Ginger does have a long shelf life as long as you store it at room temperature.  However, do not buy too much ginger at one time if you only use it sparingly.  Buy just the appropriate amount of ginger that you need to make sure that it does not spoil.

There are two ways a catering company is going to charge when it comes to a pig roast: you will either be charged per person or one flat fee, no matter the number of guests.  Those who charge a flat rate will often tell you how many people they are going to be able to feed ahead of time. For companies that charge on a per-person basis, the cost will fall between $9 and $17 per person.  The more people that a catering company has to cook for, the less you will have to pay per person.  Note that there is often a minimum rate.

For example, the catering company, ThePigKahuna.com, charges $14.00 for parties under 99 people, with a minimum of 50 people.  If the party has 100 to 175 people, the rate can go down to $12.50 per person.

Andrew’s BBQ, located in Tempe, Arizona, charges $14.95 per person for a whole pineapple smoked pig.  This price is based on 100 guests.

Flat rate catering companies will often charge anywhere from $650 to as much as $2,000 per pig.  This will include the cooking, preparing the food, and the cleanup process.

For those who want to cook the pig on their own, a slaughtered pig can often be picked up at a local farm for about $200 to $500.

Pig roast overview

With a professional catering service, the pig will be delivered to an event a few hours ahead of time since it can often take upwards of eight hours to roast.  ThePigKahuna.com, for instance, says it can take up to nine hours to roast a pig.

Upon arrival, the pig will continue to roast on an open-air rotisserie style roaster until it is done; once done, it will be cut and served accordingly.  If there are any other side dishes, these will be set up as well.   The catering company, if you choose one, should include all of the equipment necessary to roast the pig, plus the serving dishes necessary to serve.  The host, depending on the caterer’s policy, may need to supply the tables, plates, chairs, cutlery, etc.

All the necessary settings such as plates, napkins and tableware will be provided, just like any other caterer.

What are the extra costs?

Many catering companies will often offer side dishes for the meal.  These dishes can include salads, fruits, cole slaw,  baked beans, cornbread, vegetables, rice, and chicken.  Each item can vary anywhere from $1 to $6 per dish, per person.

The current market conditions can often affect the price of the pig.  Plan on spending anywhere from $1.20 to as much as $2 per pound for the pig alone.

Most catering companies will deliver and set up within a certain radius.  If the delivery is outside the radius, additional fees can apply.

Cleaning fees can apply as some catering companies will only setup, serve and leave.  If a company does charge an additional cleaning fee, this can range anywhere from $50 to $100 extra.

If you are going to cook the pig on your own, a pig roaster or roasting box will be recommended.  Many local shops can rent one out for as little as $50 to $150 for the day.

Any additional staff required for larger-than-average events can cost an extra $20 to $35 per hour.

Tips to know:

Catering companies can be rather busy during the peak seasons.  If possible, try to book a pig roast as soon as possible to ensure that your date has been reserved.

While some catering companies do not do this, some can offer samples.  Try to sample a taste of their food before deciding on one.

On average, one pig can feed 100 to 125 people.

How can I save money?

There is a good chance that you will be able to find many catering companies in your area that can provide this service.  Consider talking with at least three companies to ensure that you are getting the best deal.

What are the extra costs?

Many breeders will only sell to those who purchase pigeons in bulk, and the minimum that has to be purchased can vary anywhere from four to eight birds.  Check the seller’s policy before considering a purchase.

Since there is a rather good chance that a pigeon breeder will be outside of your hometown, shipping fees may apply.  Common shipping fees for a bird can start at $75 and go up from there.  On top of the shipping fees, a shipping container/box fee can apply as well.

Most reputable breeders will include a health certificate, and if the bird is not up to date with its shots, additional vaccination fees can apply.  Aside from vaccinations, future medication and/or vet visits need to be factored in as well.

To properly house your pigeons at your home, a loft of a coop is required.  Depending on the number of birds that you have, a loft can start at $300 and go up depending on the construction and where it’s purchased from.  Food, depending on the number of birds you house, can cost upwards of $10 to $20 per month to feed a few birds.

Tips to know:

If you are going to have the birds shipped, make sure that you get some sort of pet insurance.  That way, if something does arise in the first 90 days of having the bird, you can get your money back in case something happens.

Try to see how long the breeder has been in business.  Higher quality birds are often bred with the right mix.  Failing to breed the birds properly can often lead to a bird that does not stay healthy.

If you decide to have pigeons, you should stick with those that have been bred; most wild pigeons tend to carry diseases.

How can I save money?

Most breeders have their inventory available online.  If possible, attempt to adopt a bird near your home so that you can save on shipping costs.  If this is not possible, check with at least three different breeders online to ensure that you are getting the best deal you can.

Consider looking for birds at the end of a shipping season.  Many breeders often have fire sales in order to get rid of birds during the seasons in which they cannot ship them.

With most breeders, the more pigeons you purchase at once, the more you can save with bulk discounts.
