The Shiba Inu, native to Japan, was originally bred as a hunting partner and is known to have a high intelligence compared to other dogs.  This was a result of its natural strong prey drive which can be rooted back to the ancient breeds.  The Shiba has a double coat and can resemble a huskie with less fur.

How much does a Shiba Inu cost?

On average, the Shiba is going to range from $800 to as much as $2,300 for an AKC registered purebred.  This cost will all depend on the quality, gender, breeder, geographical location and inclusions, but remember:  price isn’t an indicator of quality.  A dog from an extremely good lineage will often cost more than $1,200, while a dog that comes from a backyard breeder with little or no paperwork can cost less than $800.

For example, at the time of this writing, PuppyFind.com, an online pet classified website had close to 200 listings, with the average price ranging from $800 to $1,300.  Here, most breeders would include the vaccines and a deworming.

Upon researching the official AKC Marketplace, we had found most reputable breeders on this website sold AKC quality Shiba Inus for $1,400 to $2,000.

Current Shiba Inu dog owners talked about what they aid on this shibainuforum.org forum thread.  Here, owners paid anywhere from $850 for an AKC champion bloodline to about $1,200.

What is going to be included in the adoption fee?

A reputable breeder should include up-to-date vaccinations, a health checkup by a licensed vet, a health guarantee, and if shipped, a travel crate.

Breeders may also include the spay/neuter, microchip and/or a starter kit with coupons and starter food.

AKC certified breeders will often take it one step further and offer a lifetime health and temperament guarantee.  They should also test the puppies for hips, eyes, PRA and cardio, along with the parents, sharing the results of both.

What are the extra costs?

While the dog is known to be very intelligent, obedience training, as with any dog, is still highly recommended.  It should start at a younger age, and at a minimum, they should learn the basics of sit, stay and lay down.  Being that these dogs are high in energy, it’s important to consider professional training in its first few weeks of ownership.

Due to the heavy coats, a professional monthly grooming session is recommended.

Recurring costs, as with any pet, will include the food, shelter, accessories, toys and routine/surprise vet visits.  A dog of this size should cost about $600 to $800 per year when healthy and much more when a sickness arises.

Tips to know

Males tend to measure 14 to 17 inches, while females will be slightly smaller, measuring 13 to 15.5 inches.  The average weight will be in the 20 to 30-pound range.

Its coat will be a thicker double cost which remains stiff and straight.  The undercoat will be softer and thick to the touch.  The coat is easy to groom and should be done weekly to remove any loose or dead hair to keep shedding at a minimum.  Common coat colors include black/tan, cream and red.

The Shiba Inu is known to be very intelligent, playful, lively, alert and can make a wonderful guard dog in some situations, which can lead to excessive barking if not controlled.

If healthy, the lifespan can range from 12 to 16 years.

To ensure you’re adopting from a reputable breeder, it’s best to adopt from a breeder that’s endorsed by the AKC or the Shiba Inu Club of America.  These ethical breeders typically show their dogs at shows and abide by strict breeding guidelines.  A good breeder should let you look at the home where the puppy was raised and should have a strict return policy.  You should also be able to see the parents on site. If the breeder seems like they just want your money, then it’s best to look elsewhere.

The dog is not recommended in close corridors, so it’s best to avoid smaller apartment and condo situations.  Regular exercise and average sized yards are highly recommended for the breed.  With this closed yard, however, make sure the fence is at least six to eight feet tall as they are known to jump over or dig under a fence to escape.

Those who own this breed often think of it more like a cat than a dog due to its independence.  These dogs don’t mind being on their own and don’t have the motivation to please their owners like other dogs do.

Due to their hunting instincts, some, depending on their personal temperaments, can be aggressive toward other dogs or animals.

The Shiba Inu has a unique scream that can be heard here.

How can I save money?

Before paying close to a thousand dollars at a breeder who’s more than likely in it for the money, highly consider looking at a local rescue that specializes with this breed or even consider the local Humane Society.  While you may not find this particular breed, per se, you may be able to find another breed that closely resembles the Shiba Inu.  Adopting is a wonderful way to support local organizations and help dogs truly in need.  For example, you could find a Shiba Inu Husky mix or Shiba Inu Corgi mix.

Shopping cart overview

Shopping carts can be made of metal, plastic, or can be a combination of the two.

A shopping cart consists of several parts.  This includes the main body in which the bulk of the items can be placed.  Some of them even have a small foldable basket in case customers would like to separate certain types of grocery items or even allow a small child to sit.  Most importantly, shopping carts have four wheels, with two that swivel in the front, making it easy for them to be pushed around.

Most companies also offer a warranty for the shopping carts that they sell.  For a certain period, the product will be covered for any damage that may occur, usually up to a year.

What are the extra costs?

Shopping carts can get broken due to extensive use, leading to either a service fee or additional charges for a new one.

For personalization and branding, shopping parts can also have logos installed on them.

Tips to know:

Why is the cart so expensive?  According to this Science Channel video, it’s due to the 75 yards of galvanized steel covered in Teflon that’s able to withstand crashes up to 30 miles per hour.

Tips to know:

Professionals who shine shoes can often shine more than a shoe.  Ashineandco.com, for instance, will clean, condition and restore anything made of leather, including a purse, luggage, jacket, wallet and briefcase.

How can I save money?

How Much Does the Shingles Vaccine Cost?

Shingles, also known as Herpes Zoster,  is a result of chickenpox that has not been completely eliminated from the body.  The most common symptom of shingles is a painful and blistery skin rash, and the shingles vaccine is a way to prevent this disease.

How much does the shingles vaccine cost?

The cost of the shingles vaccine will depend on where you get it from and your geographical location.

On average, this vaccine is going to cost anywhere from $150 to as much as $175 per Shingrix vaccine without insurance.  Since this is deemed medically necessary, most health insurance providers will cover this vaccination and you should only be responsible for your co-pay and deductible.  Because all health insurance plans are different, be sure to check with your provider to know what you will have to be responsible for.  Even with a deductible, Consumer Reports found the average patient still paid $100 to $190 after the insurance, such as Medicare, kicked in.

RetailerCost
Costco$197 to $215 (saw multiple reports according to research)
CVS$235
Rite Aid$259
Safeway$225
Sam's Club$181
Walgreens$235
Walmart$233

NOTE:  These are prices we had found when researching certain pharmacies/retailers and should offer a ballpark.  It’s best to call ahead of time to confirm these prices as most will offer a quote over the phone.

Shingles vaccine overview

It should be noted that the vaccine is more effective for people aged 60 and older.  The vaccine can prevent any occurrences of the disease after initial manifestation, which can result in a less painful shingles rash should it appear, but keep in mind this vaccination is not 100% effective as it only reduces the risk by about 51 percent, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The vaccine will be a one-time shot and will help prevent the shingles virus.

The vaccination is readily available at local pharmacies, doctor’s offices and health departments.

What are the extra costs?

If you receive this vaccination at your local doctor’s office, then an office examination fee may be applied on top of the vaccine, often increasing the price by more than $100.  This will all depend on the doctor office fees.

A booster shot could be required in the future; this will all depend on the patient’s situation.

Tips to know:

The new vaccine, Shingrix, is recommended for healthy adults 50 and over, according to the CDC.  Even if you received Zostavax in the past, the CDC still recommends it for anyone who had chicken pox and/or shingles.

Even though no serious side effects have been identified, common side effects associated with the vaccine can include redness, swelling, itching or headaches.

Medicare often covers this vaccination but will be considered as a prescription drug under Medicare Part D and Medicare Advantage plans.  Some of these plans, depending on which one you’re on, will pay less out of pocket than others.  Medicare B won’t cover the procedure.

The drug isn’t recommended for those who have a weakened immune system, have active tuberculosis or are trying to become pregnant.

Remember, you can’t get shingles unless you had the chicken pox already.  More than 90 percent of Americans today have had the chicken pox.

Those who have a reaction to gelatin, have AIDS, take steroids or have cancer should avoid this vaccine.

In 2018, the FDA approved the new shingles vaccine, Shingrix.  The CDC now recommends this vaccine over the previous one, Zostavax.

How can I save money?

Patients who are covered by insurance can expect a reduced cost for the vaccine.  Ask your insurance provider regarding this matter to ensure that you get the maximum coverage that they can provide.  If you don’t have a health insurance policy, check eHealthInsurance.com for a low-cost policy quote in your area.

Make sure that the doctor that you visit for consultation is the same doctor that will administer the vaccine.  The doctor can include the administration of the vaccine with the consultation fees, which can help you save a few hundred dollars.

For those who meet certain income requirements, many local health departments can provide this vaccination at a deeply discounted price.  If possible, talk with your local health department to see what kind of discount for which you may be eligible.  Merck Helps, a patient assistance program, can also help those who are experiencing financial hardships by offering low-cost vaccines.

The Affordable Care Act requires health plans to cover vaccines recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, including the shingles vaccine.  Although the insurance policies on the exchange will cover this vaccine, you may still incur other service charges when you had the vaccine administered.

As you can see from the table mentioned above, there will be some pricing discrepancies between the pharmacies.  Call up a few pharmacies to confirm the prices to see who’s offering the lowest rate.

How Much Does Shaving Teeth Cost?

Save up to 60% off with discounted dental plans. Get your quote now >>

Shaving the teeth, also referred to as dental contouring, interproximal reduction or an enameloplasty, is the process of removing a small amount of enamel from the tooth.  This cosmetic procedure will alter the length and/or shape of the tooth, and the overall goal is to narrow the teeth.  According to everyday health, even a few millimeters in the right places can greatly improve the appearance of your teeth.

This procedure is often recommended to those who want to either make a tiny tooth adjustment or improve the look of a few teeth.  According to most dentists, this procedure is commonly done on teeth that are slightly crooked or when one tooth may stick out more than another.

How much does shaving teeth cost?

The cost of shaving teeth will depend on the dentist performing the procedure, the geographical location, the complexity of the situation and amount of teeth that need to be shaved.  On average, this procedure can range anywhere from $70 to as much as $250 per tooth without insurance.

Everyday Health says this is an inexpensive way to improve the look of your teeth, often costing $50 to $300 per tooth, depending on the amount of work that needs to be done.  If this defect was caused by an accident, for instance, then there’s a good chance your dental policy may cover the procedure.

Shaving teeth overview

This procedure is commonly done to narrow the teeth, fix tooth crowding or fix teeth with a width discrepancy.   Shaving teeth, most of the time, is commonly done to close the gap between the teeth, which sometimes happen when braces are put on.

Shaving can be performed by either using a dental drill used to trim the teeth or it can be done by hand, where the dentist uses diamond coated strips that are worked back and forth between the teeth.  The method the dentist will choose all depends on the amount of enamel that needs to be trimmed off.  Animated-teeth.com says if it’s a small amount that needs to be removed, usually .3mm or less, then the dentist will often use their hands, but if it’s a larger reduction, a drill will more than likely be used.

What are the extra costs?

Before the procedure, dental x-rays may be taken to make sure your teeth are healthy enough for the procedure.  Some offices may tie the x-ray costs into the procedure, while others may charge this separately.  Dental x-rays are commonly $50 to $100 extra, depending on the number of x-rays required.

During the procedure, the dentist will mark your teeth with a specialized highlighter to show you the areas that need to be resculpted.  A sanded instrument will then be used to eliminate imperfections on the tooth, essentially “shaving” it.  Finally, the tooth will be smoothed out and polished.

Shaving your teeth is often the stepping stone to other procedures in the future.  Other procedures such as veneers, crown lengthening, and tooth whitening is often performed months after once the patient can afford it.

Touch-up work may be required, depending on your situation.

Tips to know:

Because only the enamel is removed, the process tends to be painless and no anesthesia is required.  Depending on the method the dentist uses, it will either feel like a slight tug between the teeth or a slight vibration of a drill.

Removing minor overlaps and imperfections can help lower the risk of decay or gum disease.

How can I save money?

You may want to check with your insurance company to see if they can provide coverage for the service.  They may be able to provide full or partial coverage for the service if it’s deemed medically necessary.  You might only be responsible for the deductible or copay.  If you don’t have insurance, DentalPlans.com offers dental plans that can help you save up to 60% on your visits to local dentists, acting like an insurance policy.

In some cases, this can actually be the most inexpensive option to consider.  For example, if a few of your teeth had an imperfect look, the dentist could perform this procedure, preventing you from getting costly braces in the future.

At the time of writing this guide, PuppyFind.com, an online classified website that connects dog breeders with buyers, had a bit more than 100 listings ranging from $500 to $950.  Most breeders, at least the listings we glanced at, offered current vaccinations, registration paperwork, a health guarantee and a veterinarian examination.

What is going to be included in the adoption fee?

A reputable breeder should always include registration paperwork, a health guarantee, a health checkup by a licensed vet, up-to-date vaccinations and a travel crate if it’s going to be shipped.  The dog may also be microchipped and/or spay/neutered.

What are the extra costs?

Recurring costs, as with any pet, will need to be factored in.  This will include the daily food, water, accessories, toys, shelter and routine/surprise vet visits.  The average dog owner pays anywhere from $650 to $800 per year for a healthy dog.  If the dog were to come down with a serious illness, this price can increase by two or three times the amount, if not more.

The dog needs to be trained firmly, and because of this, it’s highly advisable you sign up for professional obedience classes at a young age to teach it the basics such as sit, stay and lay.  Depending on how many classes you can take, basic starter classes can start at $50 and go up from there.

To prevent irritation inside the dog’s unique folds, its coat should be cleaned and groomed at least weekly.  To avoid these skin problems, it’s best to take it to a groomer at least once per month for a professional cleaning.  Due to these wrinkles, the dog is highly prone to common skin diseases or dermatitis.

If healthy, the dog can live nine to 11 years.

The breed needs a decent amount of exercise and should be taken on a one hour walk at least once per day.  It’s also advisable you avoid the as they usually don’t do well in hot weather.

Burke’s Backyard says this dog isn’t recommended for a first-time dog owner since you need to commit a lot of your time training this breed.  Due to its aggressive tendencies, those who are cable of showing dominance over this dog is highly recommended.

This dog, according to yourpurebredpuppy.com, is great for those who want a sturdily-built dog, a calm nature and one that doesn’t bark much.

How can I save money?

Consider adopting from a local shelter or rescue group.  While you may not be able to find this particular breed, there could be a good chance you find a puppy that looks similar.  Plus, instead of spending thousands on a dog that was bred to be sold, you can help a dog that truly needs a forever home.  For instance, you may be able to find a Shar-Pei Pitbull mix or Shar-Pei lab mix

Sheep overview

Like a dog or cat, the market is flooded with many different varieties, often broken down into the following categories:  wool, meat, dual purpose and triple purpose breeds.  A wool breed, for example, can include the Merino and Rambouillet, while the meat breeds can include the Cheviot, Southdown and Dorse.  A dual purpose breed refers to just that:  It can serve two purposes by providing both wool and meat.  A triple purpose breed can do all three things:  provide milk, wool and meat.

One the market, you won’t necessarily see the term “sheep,” but instead, you will see the following:  lambs, yearlings and ewes.  If it’s less than a year old, it will be referred to as a lamb.  If it’s one to two years old, then it will be considered a yearling.  If it’s older than two years old, then it will be referred to as a ewe.

Reputable breeders/farmers should always provide all paperwork, a health guarantee, up to date vaccinations and will more than likely dock the tails after they are born.

Sheep can be purchased can be purchased at a sale barn, local farmer’s auction or through a reputable purebred breeder; however, according to Countryside Daily, it’s advisable to steer clear of a sale barn since these sheep tend to be the reject, often coming from someone else’s problem.  And as for an auction, this may not be a wise choice since it can be hard to see where the flock came from.  Sheep can also be found on Craigslist, local newspaper ads or simply by searching for a breeder on Google.

What are the extra costs?

Sheep, regardless of which breed you purchase, will need a lot of land to explore and graze as they roam throughout the day.  As a general rule of thumb, plan on having at least one acre per five sheep and 25 square feet of indoor space per animal.  This land should have adequate fencing and shelter to prevent predators, such as roaming dogs and coyotes, from entering their living quarters.

Since sheep don’t do well on their own due to their flocking instinct, it’s highly advisable to purchase more than one.

Sheep commonly eat on hay and/or grain.  Per sheep, plan on spending $5 to $9 per month for the hay and/or another $5 or so for the whole yellow corn grain.  A mineral block or lick is also necessary to provide the trace minerals and salt for their diet.

Just like your pet dogs and cats, a sheep will need vaccinations such as an adult booster.  Worming will need to be factored in as well.  If you do it on your own, it can cost as little as a few dollars, but if you were to hire a mobile vet, the costs could get well into the hundreds.  The same could be said about unexpected illnesses.

Those with larger flocks often purchase a sheepdog such as the Australian sheepdog to protect their herd.  This puppy, on average, can $600 to $800 and won’t include the training necessary to protect the sheep as it grows old.

Tips to know:

Try your best to check out the farm to see how the sheep were raised.  If the farm is organized and neat, then there’s a good chance the breeder takes care of their livestock.  Even if the farm is neat, it’s also important to pay close attention to the sheep you’re looking to adopt.  Does it look healthy?  Does it have any conditions that may be concerning such as a cough or limp?  If you’re unfamiliar with this breeder and plan on purchasing more than one, you may want to hire a veteran to check out the flock before making the purchase.

Mother Earth News recommends putting a bell on your sheep so you can hear them if they were being chased.

How can I save money?

Many farms often offer volume discounts, saving you close to 10 to 30 percent if 10 or more are purchased.

How Much Does Physical Therapy Cost?

Physical therapy is a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialty that promotes mobility, function, diagnosis, prognosis and physical intervention, and it’s often recommended if you’re feeling a nagging pain or some stiffness in your joints.  Whatever the problem may be, a physical therapist will be able to treat these muscle and joint problems with a detailed exercise regime.

How much does physical therapy cost?

The cost of physical therapy depends on the number of sessions needed, the physical therapist, the type of session, insurance and the geographical location.  On average, a session, after the initial consult has been completed, can range anywhere from $60 to as much as $250 without insurance, but most insurance plans will cover physical therapy as long as it is deemed medically necessary.  If covered, you will be responsible for your co-pays/deductibles.  Most people who are insured reported paying $10 to $85 after their insurance kicked in.

GuideDoc.com says the costs will depend on the services you receive, the type of therapy required and which treatments are allowed under your insurance policy.  The average Medicare allowable for services, for instance, is $26 to $30 per weighted procedure, bringing the total cost to around $100.

As for the grand total, it will be hard to say how many sessions you will need since every situation will be unique in its own way.  WebMD, for instance, interviewed a physical therapist and they said six to 12 sessions commonly treat most ailments.  With this number, you could plan on spending a total $360 to more than $3,000 without insurance.

Benchmark Physical Therapy, a popular physical therapy chain, for example, charges about $150 per average session, according to some visitors to their Facebook page.

Since there are so many services offered within a physical therapist office, the costs can vary.  We did some research and were able to find out what some popular services cost.  The prices mentioned below are for those who don’t have insurance.

Physical therapy overview

The first session will usually last 45 to 60 minutes and will be referred to as the assessment.  During this assessment, the physical therapist will perform an exam and create a list of the problems you have. During this detailed exam, a strength test will be performed to determine which muscles are working at a normal capacity and a range of motion test will be performed as well to see which muscles are able to move naturally. With this report, he or she will then be able to create a treatment plan that you will be able to follow every time you come into the facility.

After the assessment, the frequency of your sessions will depend on the patient and the problem being treated.

What are the extra costs?

Before you can even start sessions, an initial consultation, as stated above, is necessary to find out what the best treatment plan will be.  During this consult, the physical therapist will be able to identify what needs to be done in order to treat the specific ailment.  This initial consult can cost up to $175.

Tips to know

Some evidence, according to WebMD, says physical therapy can be more effective than back pain surgery; however, bypassing the surgery altogether doesn’t mean you will see a cure.

Health insurance can be very complex when it comes down to physical therapy sessions, so before you start your sessions, make sure you have everything in line with your insurer.  For example, if your therapist doesn’t think these sessions are necessary for a certain health condition, then there’s a good chance the insurance company won’t cover it.  Also, some insurance companies won’t cover if you don’t work with a professional inside their network.

How can I save money?

Before using your health insurance plan, refer to the fine print for more information.  What you may find out is that some policies will require a referral before they accept your claim or may limit the number of sessions you can go to.  Private insurance plans, Medicare, Medicaid, Worker’s Compensation and even automotive liability insurance will cover physical therapy appointments.

Some physical therapists may offer discounts for those who purchase their sessions in bulk.  For example, if you were to buy five or 10 sessions at once, then you could save up to 20 percent or more.  Commonly, these discounts are available for those who don’t have insurance.

How much does it cost to rent a photo booth?

The cost of a photo booth will depend on the number of hours needed, the type of photo booth, add-ons, geographical location and company offering the booth.  On average, renting a photo booth can range anywhere from $600 to $1,300 for two to four hours, with additional hours costing upwards of $100 per hour.  According to our research, we had found most people, commonly brides, paid about $1,000 to $1,200 for four hours with unlimited photos.  Most companies that rent a photo booth will have packages available and won’t charge by the hour.

The Mad Mochi Photo Booth company, for instance, lists their prices on their website.  Depending on the package you choose, it can range anywhere from as little as $549 for a photo studio for two hours to as much as $899 for the classic enclosed photo booth for up to four hours.

According to a few members on WeddingWire, they paid anywhere from $1,200 for four to six hours with some extras to $1,000 for unlimited pictures for four hours.

Phhhoto booth, a social photo booth that can create animated GIFs for your party, takes a different approach when compared to the traditional booths.  The price, however, is much higher.  According to the company, the pricing starts at $5,000 and this will include the setup, custom watermark, web gallery, sharing to social media, attendance and tear down.

Photo booth rental overview

There are two common types of photo booths available:  an enclosed photo booth, similar to the one you would see at a mall or theme park, or an open-air booth that requires a tripod and a white backdrop.  This type of setup would often include props and an assistant to help take the pictures as people enter the staging area.  The booths, if self serve, are relatively easy to operate:  Simply enter with the props, press a button and the photo, usually a 4×6 or 2×6, will be ready in less than a minute on average.

From most of the packages we saw online, it often includes free delivery within 25 miles, unlimited photos for up to a certain time period, setup/breakdown, an on-site attendant and liability insurance.   These packages will require a two to four+ hour commitment.

What are the extra costs?

The photos taken in the photo booth will often be saved on a storage device, and some companies sometimes offer a scrapbook where all of the photos taken during the event will be printed for an additional price, while others may include the scrapbook with the estimates mentioned above.  A photo guest album, if requested, could cost an additional $50 to $100.  The same could be said for those who want a DVD.

Personalized photo strips from the event can cost another $30 to $60.

Custom backdrops, outside of what the company offers, can be an additional $100 to $350, depending on what you’re looking for.  The same can be said about props.  If you were to need more or larger props, this could be an additional cost to consider.

A custom guestbook station, where guests can decorate and create their own book, can cost an additional $50 to $100 for the supplies and setup.

Some high tech companies often allow you to share these photos instantly on social media live for a small fee, usually $50 to $150.

A travel fee may apply if the company has to travel outside of their radius, usually 25 to 50 miles or more.  If outside of the radius, this can be an additional $3 per mile traveled.

Packages are often allotted for a certain amount of time.  If you were to go over this time limit, then an hourly charge can apply, usually around $100 to $200 per hour.

Tips to know:

Most companies charge by the hour regardless of the number of pictures that will be taken.  You will be able to take as many pictures as you want as long as the shots were taken within the specified time.

How can I save money?

The best way to save money is to compare rates between at least three companies.  While most companies offer their pricing on their website, some may require you call to obtain a quote.

As you can see, renting a photo booth can be quite expensive.  To save money, consider creating your own DIY photo booth as seen here.

Some people have had luck searching Groupon for local photo booth rental deals.

Saturdays will always be the most expensive day of the week.  If you can, try rent on a Friday or another day of the week.  Doing so can help you save 20 percent or more.

Schools, non-profits and some government organizations are often entitled to discounts, so it doesn’t hurt to ask.
