How Much Do Before and After School Programs Cost?

After school programs provide an opportunity to children to continue the learning process after the normal hours of school.  These programs also allow parents who work extra time a child care option since most schools dismiss around 3:00 p.m. and the average person works until 5:00 p.m. or later.  Defined by the AfterSchoolAlliance.org, these programs can be defined as any program that provides child care for elementary and middle school youth when they are not in school and parents aren’t home.

After school programs can be defined as any activity offered by an organization that invites the youth to participate outside of the traditional programs offered at the school.  The programs can be held inside a school building or elsewhere in the community.

How much do before- and after-school programs cost?

A lot of public schools offer both before and after school programs for their students, with fees ranging anywhere from $100 to $550 per month.  These costs can be dependent upon where you live, your family’s income, the hours of operation and the activities provided by the program.  Some programs may charge by the hour, which can be anywhere from $5 to $9, whereas others may charge by the day and/or week.  Daily rates can be in the $10 to $20 rates, while weekly rates can be $120 to $170.  However, in some higher cost of living areas, these costs could be more.  Refer to our table below to see what some parents paid in the United States.

If the program isn’t operated by the school district, it can often be subcontracted to an outside source such as the YMCA.  If this were the case, then the costs could be anywhere from $250 to $600 or more per month, again, depending on the factors mentioned earlier.  This cost estimate is often for programs that last until six p.m. after school gets out.  Aside from the YMCA, local churches, for-profit daycare centers and boys and girls clubs may offer these programs as well.

For example, the Gilbert, Arizona, school district offers an after-school program for $14.75 per day or $62.70 per week.

For-profit daycares or schools can often pick up or drop your child off with their personal shuttle, offering similar programs to the typical daycare.  These costs can range anywhere from $200 to $600, depending on the geographical location, the school you choose and the activities provided.

According to some forum members on ProTeacher.net, some parents replied to the costs of aftercare programs and said they paid anywhere from $3 per 15 minutes to as much as $486 per week at the local YMCA.

Geographical AreaCost
New Hampshire$12 per day or $30 on non-school day
Delaware$125 per week
Arkansas$45 per week or $8.75 per day
Alabama$5 per day
Louisiana$16 per day for both before/after or $12 for either
Nevada$80 per week
Pennsylvania$17 per day for both before/after
California$16 per day
Oregon$35 per week
Michigan$400 for whole school year
Ohio$40 per week

Before- and after-school programs overview

Most after-school programs, regardless of which option you choose, will be supervised by a staff member/s and will either operate as a daycare service or may provide specialized activities such as sports, games, projects, music or movies.  Some may also offer a quiet room where students can study and get their homework done for the day.  The Living Experience, for instance, breaks down their schedule:  At 3 p.m., the student arrives, receives a snack, gets homework assistance, and by 5:45, it will be time for pickup.

School programs that begin before school usually open at 6 a.m. and after-school programs will be open until 6 p.m.

Before and after school programs often last two to three hours, depending on the times and school policy.

What are the extra costs?

A one-time registration fee may apply at the beginning of the school year, usually no more than $50.

Some organizations will offer transportation to pick up the kids from and to the location of the facility, but there may be an additional charge, usually no more than $50 per month.

Most schools will ask that you pick up your student at a certain time, and if you were to show up after this designated time, then you may be charged a late fee, usually about $1 to $5 per minute.

Some programs may be available while the school is on holiday break.  If you needed your child to attend during these breaks, most programs, according to our research, increase their rates by two or three times the amount.

If the school has a half day, the costs for that day can increase.

How can I save money?

If you sign up for an after-school program through the child’s current school, you may be eligible for a student discount.

If programs are available through your public school district, you may be eligible if you meet certain income requirements.

Sibling discounts can be available to those who have more than one child attending the program.  Oftentimes, this can be as much as 25 percent off the tuition.

How Much Does an African Grey Parrot Cost?

The African Grey Parrot is known to be one of the most intelligent birds available today.  This bird earns this title since it can perform different sounds such as imitating the calls of other several species.  Moreover, there is one African Gray Parrot breed, in particular, that possesses the ability to associate simple human words with meanings.  There even was one that was able to have a vocabulary of over 950 words and could use these to create simple phrases.

How much does an African Gray Parrot cost?

On average, the African Gray Parrot can cost anywhere from $500 to $2,500, and this is going to depend on the parrot’s age, its appearance, abilities and who you’re purchasing it from.  A younger bird will often be $700 or more, according to our research, while older parrots can commonly be found in the $500 to $850 range.  Compared to other parrot species, the African Grey tends to be on the higher side because of its intelligence and ability to mimic so many vocabulary words.  Baby birds are ideal for those are experienced with bird handling and know how to train the bird as it grows older, while an older bird may be more suitable for someone who doesn’t have a whole lot of experience.

Refer to our chart below to see what some breeders in the United States were charging.

This PetEducation.com article claims the average African Grey Parrot can cost $1,000 to $1,500.

Geographical LocationCost
Roanoke, VA$1,500
Tampa, FL$1,600
Coupeville, WA$2,200
Malabar, FL$600
Grand Rapids, MI$2,400
Indiantown, FL$1,600
Glendale, AZ$1,800
Fort Morgan, CO$1,500

African Gray Parrot overview

There are two places you can adopt this bird:  either online or at a local pet store.  Purchasing a bird in a local pet store is ideal since you’re able to closely examine the bird, see its color, size and other features.  In contrast, purchasing online may bring some disadvantages since you’re not able to see the bird if you’re purchasing from someone who lives hundreds of miles away.  However, if you don’t live near a pet store that doesn’t carry this bird, which is often pretty common, then you may have no choice but to purchase from an online breeder.

A breeder, most of the time, will have the bird fully weaned and hand raised before they put it up for adoption; however, if this were not the case, then it should be noted in the description.

There are two popular African Grey Parrots:  the Congo and Timneh.  The Congo African Grey can grow 12 to 14 inches tall, whereas the Timneh African Grey can grow nine to 11 inches tall.  Most of these birds will be predominately grey, with some white around the eyes and shorter red/black tail feathers.  Both are native to West and Central Africa, and while in the wild, they live in flocks ranging from smaller families to groups larger than 100.

In size, the Congo will often have a larger body build, wings and shoulders when compared to the Timneh, but most of the time, it can be hard to distinguish a difference from a distance.

The bird is known to be relatively shy around strangers and can commonly bond to one person.  Known to be extremely intelligent, it is considered to be the best bird to mimic words.

A healthy African Grey parrot can live from 50 to 80 years.

What are the extra costs?

Its diet will consist of a 70 percent high-quality pellet diet, 25 percent vegetables (greens and corn) and 5 percent fruit.  Plan on budgeting at least $30 to $45 per month for food alone.

A cage is absolutely necessary, and the larger the cage is, the better it will be for your bird.  This cage should be large, strong, sturdy and should have plenty of toys to keep it entertained.  Whether it’s buying a second-hand cage or a brand new one, plan on spending at least $200 to $400 for a decent sized cage.  Cleaners and disinfectants are also necessary to keep the living quarters clean.

Toys and perches inside the cage are highly recommended to keep the bird entertained.  These toys can help keep their brains stimulated and can allow them to use their natural instincts to forage for food throughout the day.  When choosing a toy, make sure it’s sturdy since their beaks can turn a piece of wood into dust.

Sexing, if you don’t know the gender, can be done and can be accomplished by an endoscopy or DNA sexing procedure.

If the bird has to be shipped via an airline, this could be an additional $250 to $450, depending on the airline and distance traveled.

Pet insurance and routine/surprised vet bills need to be factored in.  If your bird were to sustain an injury, a simple surgery could cost hundreds of dollars if you didn’t have a health insurance policy.

Since this bird needs attention constantly, you can’t leave it at home for days without any human interaction.  Unless you’re able to find an experienced caregiver, then you should be prepared to carry around your parrot in a travel carrier you can take from one point to another.  These carriers are also ideal if you’re looking to take your bird to a vet visit.

Tips to know:

These birds won’t start talking until they are one or two years old, but don’t be surprised if some take longer.  In fact, according to FeatherMe.com, some birds will never talk through their lifetime.  According to some, the Congo African Grey has been known to learn new words quicker than the Timneh.

The parrot should be located away from direct sun, air conditioning and all heat sources.

These birds need at least four to five hours of interaction per day to avoid becoming bored.  If they don’t receive enough attention, they may acquire a mental illness if not stimulated; it can also lead to feather plucking, phobias, mutilation or aggression.  If you don’t have the time to dedicate to this bird daily, then it may be best to think of another pet.

According to The World of African Grey, these birds can be very noisy, often starting as early as the morning when they wake up since it’s programmed in their natural instincts.  In the wild, they often make these noises in the morning to alert the flock and let them know their territory is safe.  If you do live in an apartment or condo where the noise level should be kept at a minimum, then these noises could cause a problem.

How can I save money?

Consider looking for an owner looking to re-home their bird or even a rescue center in your area that specializes with these birds.  Oftentimes, you can adopt a bird with all of the necessary supplies for a few hundred dollars.  When doing so, though, make sure you’re buying from someone you trust and always make sure there’s some sort of guarantee if the bird were to have a health problem.

How Much Does Wedding Dress Cleaning Cost?

Cleaning a wedding dress is similar to cleaning normal clothing; however, additional care is required due to the nature of the fabric used when making the dress.

The wedding dress is one of the many items used during a wedding that is considered a treasure by the couple, and some people wonder what to do with the wedding dress after the wedding.  Some may sell their dress, while others may store it, but before they do so, they will have it professionally cleaned.

The cost of cleaning a wedding dress depends on the material it’s made from, where you live and the cleaner.

Dress” (CC BY 2.0) by nicolafchild

How much does a wedding dress cleaning cost?

On average, a professional wedding dress cleaning can vary anywhere from $85 locally to as much as $250 if you were to use an online service.  Most dry cleaners and online preservation companies will charge a flat rate, and if any additional costs were involved, then it could be due to a stubborn stain such as grass or dirt.

If you were to want the dress cleaned and preserved, then the costs could be closer to $500 to $750, again, depending on the company, the insurance involved, accessories and how you want the dress preserved.  For instance, AffordablePreservation.com proclaims if the dress were to be preserved in a quality acid-free chest, then you should expect to pay around $200 to $600.  For a premium service, then the costs could inch closer to $1,000.

For example, Bridal Kare International, a company that offers wedding dress cleaning and preservation, charges $129, plus a $18 shipping fee.

Forum members on WeddingBee.com said they had paid anywhere from $150 to $200 to have their wedding dress dry cleaned and preserved inside a window box.

According to EverAfterGuide.net, you should expect to pay around $100 if you were to use a higher-end company, but this for a basic cleaning.  The website claims if you were to have oil stains or it’s overly elaborate, then the costs could be more than $200.

Wedding dress cleaning overview

When it comes to cleaning your wedding dress, you will have a few options:  For starters, you can store your dress until you’re ready to clean it, attempt to clean it on your own following a DIY method, take it to a local dry cleaner or use an online wedding dress preservation company.  The best time, regardless of which option you choose, is right after your wedding day.  This way, you risk the chance of staining or ruining it in storage.

Using an online preservation company, for instance, will require you to ship the wedding dress in a shipping box provided by the company.  Your gown will then be shipped to the facility, cleaned and shipped back in a preservation box, allowing you to store it where you wish.

Dry cleaning, depending on the method you choose, can take anywhere from a few days if you were to use a local dry cleaner to as long as 30 days if you were to ship it to an online company.  The time can also depend on the layers in the dress, how busy the dry cleaner is and if shipping is involved.

Solvents used to clean a wedding dress

If choosing a local dry cleaner, the following solvents may be used to clean it:  Greenearth, Exxon DF-2000, a Stoddard solvent or Perchloroethylene.

Greenearth

Greenearth, for instance, is a solvent is silicone based and is ideal for beaded dresses; however, it won’t be as good when removing stains.

Exxon DF-2000

Exxon DF-2000 is petroleum-based and is excellent at treating beads and sequins.  Similar to Greenearth, this cleaner is the number one choice by experts and dry cleaners across the United States.

Stoddard solvent

A Stoddard solvent, which is similar to Exxon DF-2000, is also petroleum-based, but unlike Exxon, it’s not used as much anymore.  Due to strip malls and fire codes restricting this cleaner, many professionals opt for the safer alternatives.

Perchloroethylene

Lastly, Perchloroethylene is the most common stain remover at most dry cleaners.  This solvent is ideal for degreasing, and if the dress is made from silk, rayon or acetate, there’s a good chance the cleaner will use this to remove stubborn stains.  Because of the environmental impacts, your local state laws will dictate which solvents can be used.

What are the extra costs?

The shipping costs may not be included in the estimates included above.  If not, these shipping fees can be anywhere between $15 and $45.

Adding additional keepsakes from your wedding day, such as the veil, shoes and purse, for instance, can be preserved for an additional fee.  Some, however, may include this free of charge, so it’s best to check the contract ahead of time to see what’s included.  If not, plan on paying an additional $20 to $50 per item.

Dry cleaners will often bag your wedding dress after the procedure but may be able to upgrade to a window/shadow acid-free box for an additional $25 to $75.

Adding a touch of personalization, such as adding a picture or date to your box, could increase the cost.  Personalizing often increases the price by $25 to $50, depending on the complexity.

Tips to know:

While it may be tempting to clean the dress on your own, it’s important to know that silk and other sensitive materials won’t respond well to the over-the-counter laundry detergent you probably use.  If you fail to clean the dress properly, according to WeddingGownPreservationKit.com, you can damage the delicate material.  Another material such as polyester organza should be used with caution as well as this material can lose its “crispiness” when hand pressing the material.

Bleach, one of the harshest chemicals we know, should never be used on a dress in any circumstances.

When choosing a local dry cleaner, ask them how the dry cleaning will be performed.  Some dry cleaners will be able to perform the cleaning on site, while others may ship it off to a third-party vendor since most local companies won’t have the right equipment to perform the job properly.  If they do ship it off to another company, then it’s best to skip the dry cleaner and find a similar company to save on the markup costs.

Always ask about the warranty before you pay your invoice.  If a dry cleaner stands behind their work, then they will be more than happy to offer a warranty, usually 90 days to one year long.

For the best results, Heritage Gown recommends a dry cleaner that uses a virgin solvent.  This type of solvent won’t be recycled like other solvents, causing that dry cleaning smell.

Carefully read the label on the dress to make sure the right chemicals are used; for example, some gowns will state dry clean only with petroleum-based solvent.  As mentioned above, Exxon DF 200 and Stoddard will be petroleum based.

How can I save money?

Shop around if you’re going to use an online service or even a local dry cleaner.  You’re going to find that some may vary by as much as a hundred dollars, even if they use the same exact service.

How Much Does a Well Inspection Cost?

Need a pro near you? Get multiple quotes for free online. Get your quote now >>

A well inspection is a process where an inspector comes in to evaluate the condition of the water well and provide suggestions and solutions if any issues are found.  This inspection can either be done during a home inspection or can be done at the homeowner’s request and is highly recommended since you can’t simply look at the well and determine if it’s in good shape.

Well inspectors use a variety of techniques and equipment to complete the job and the cost will depend on the well site, where you live and company performing the job.

How much does a well inspection cost?

On average, the cost of a well inspection can be anywhere between $45 to $150 per hour, and the average job will take upwards of one to three hours.  From our research, most of the well inspection companies we researched had charged $325 to $600 total to inspect a well.  If you were to combine the tests and add water, the well and the septic system, then the total costs could be around $450 to $650 total.

Pacific Northwest Inspections, a company that offers well inspection services, usually finishes the job in one to two hours.  On their website, they state the basic package can cost anywhere from $450 to $625, depending on the complexity of the job.

Well inspection overview

During the well inspection, the inspector will collect water samples and send it off to a state certified lab.  At this lab, they will test for coliform, e-Coli bacteria, arsenic and nitrates, and additional testing can be done for a fee if a homeowner requests it.

Aside from the laboratory results, the inspector will visually inspect the well to make sure it up to code standards.  During this inspection, he or she will inspect the setback distances, the casing height above the grade, the thickness, its condition and will look at the well cap to ensure the seals, vents, overflows, gaskets and screens are all in good condition.  Red flags, during this inspection, can include rust on the pressure tank, low pressure levels, faulty gauges, strange noises, cloudy water and/or vibrations come from the supply pipes.

Lastly, the well’s pump will be inspected to make sure it’s operating properly and the amount of water the well can produce will be examined as well.

Most jobs take an average of two to three hours to perform and lab testing, if ordered, can take up to a few weeks to receive the results back, depending on who you use.

What are the extra costs?

Sometimes, the well inspection will only include the visual inspection and to make sure the well is working according to code.  If you wanted to have your water tested at a lab, then some inspectors may charge an additional $100 to $150 for this service; however, most inspectors will include this and tie it into the estimates mentioned above.

If you have a well, then there’s a good chance you will have a septic system as well.  If this were the case, most inspectors will want to test this as well.  If you were to have both the well and septic system tested at once, then it could cost about $100 more than the estimates mentioned above; however, if you were to have your septic system tested on its own in the future, then this could be as much as a well inspection, usually around $300 to $450.

If the company has to travel outside of their radius, then a travel surcharge may be charged, which is usually $1 to $2 per mile.

Tips to know:

While some home inspectors may think they are the “jack of all trades,” it’s often best to hire an inspector who specializes in wells.  These inspectors will often have the right experience, knowledge and training.  When choosing one, first see if your state requires a well inspector to be licensed; if so, then ask to see this license before you hire.  Secondly, get at least three references to make sure the inspector has some experience.  Lastly, ask them what kind of equipment they are using in order to get the job done.

If you don’t know where to begin your search, consider talking with the neighbors who may have a well.

How can I save money?

Most companies will recommend getting your water, well and septic tank tested at the same time.  If you were to combine these tests, it often adds $50 to $150 to the total.

How Much Does a Weimaraner Dog Cost?

The Weimaraner dog is a breed long used by royalty for hunting large game animals such as boar, bears and deer, but over time, these dogs were also used to hunt smaller animals such as rabbits.

Weimaraner breeds have a very elegant look and are very athletic in appearance.  A male Weimaraner can stand between 25 and 27 inches while females stand at least two inches shorter.  They are not heavy dogs and usually appear very muscular.  The price of a Weimaraner dog depends on the age, gender, quality and breeder offering the dog for adoption.

Puppies by emarquetti, on Flickr
Puppies” (CC BY-SA 2.0) by  emarquetti

How much does a Weimaraner dog cost?

On average, this particular breed can cost anywhere from $650 to as much as $1,200.   Most AKC registered breeders, according to our research, would list their puppies for $850 to $1,100.

Blue River Weimaraners says the price for their dogs will be $1,200 regardless of the color and the sex.  For an additional cost, the website notes the puppies will be registered with the AKC and NAVHDA and the puppies will be microchipped.

Owyheestar Weimaraners, another breeder we had found online near the Idaho border, stated most of their puppies would cost about $1,150, but the longhair pups could cost $1,250.

What is going to be included in the adoption fee?

A reputable breeder should include limited registration papers, a health checkup from a licensed veterinarian, up-to-date vaccinations and a travel crate if it’s going to be shipped.  Depending on the breeder or rescue group, they may also include the spay/neutering, microchip and a small starter pack that includes samples of food and coupons.  Also, this breed, when compared to others, will often have their tails docked and dew claws removed when first born.  Most breeders won’t allow you to let you take the puppies home until six to eight weeks old.

What are the extra costs?

Shipping the dog through an airline can start at $150.  This will all depend on the airline, the size of the dog and where it’s going to be shipped.  One listing we found, for instance, said they would ship for $350 to anywhere in the United States.

Don’t forget about the recurring costs such as food, toys, shelters, accessories and routine/surprise vet visits.  A healthy dog, on average, can cost around $900 per year, but if the dog were to come down with a serious illness, this cost could be much higher.

Behavioral training, according to PuppyFind.com, is strongly recommended.  If you don’t have the time to do it yourself or plan on hiring a professional, plan on budgeting for obedience classes, which can start at $75 and go up from there.  These dogs have been known to suffer from aggressive behavior if not trained or separation anxiety if left alone for long periods of time.

Many breeders will include limited registration, which means the future dogs can’t be registered with the AKC; however, if you were to want a full AKC registration, then this could be an additional $200 to $400, depending on the breeder.

Tips to know:

Before you can adopt a puppy, a reputable breeder will first have you fill out an application and sometimes visit your home to see where the dogs will be residing.  Upon approval, you may be able to take the dogs home that day if available or you may be placed on a waiting list until the next litter is available.  If this were the case, a non-refundable deposit, usually $100 to $300, will be required to secure your spot.

Those who have owned the breed have said the dog is known to get along with other household pets and younger children; however, due to its high energy level, it’s often not recommended for younger children.  Being territorial, it may be aggressive toward strangers depending on how well it has been trained.

Loyal, friendly, intelligent and energetic.  These are all words that can describe the Weimaraner’s character.  It’s sometimes referred to as the “dog with a human brain” because it can actually solve some fairly complex problems.  They can be very needy, but as long as trained, they can be a joy to be around.

Its long, silky coat is known to be hard and smooth to the touch, and its gray color can range from a beige to a flesh tone.

Weighing anywhere from 40 to 90 pounds, the dog is also known for its docked tail, gray nose, long ears and slopped webbed feet.

This dog will daily exercise due to its hunting instincts, so it’s best to consider a larger yard where it can roam and job freely.  Those who have owned this dog often refer to its endless amount of energy, so if you’re not prepared to offer it exercise, then it may be wise to think about another breed.

The breed requires few grooming needs and will only require a rubber brushing once per week to keep a clean appearance.

It’s highly recommended you choose a reputable breeder who is recognized by the AKC.

The breed is known to life-threatening illnesses such as bloat, joint and bone problems, bleeding disorders, cancer and some eye diseases.

How can I save money?

One way that you can save is by adopting a pet.  Since there are usually no costs involved when you adopt, it is a sure way to save hundreds of dollars; however, do keep in mind that finding the breed that you want can be tricky, but it doesn’t hurt because you may find one that looks similar to the breed.  For example, this breed is often mixed with the Blue Heeler, Chocolate Lab, Husky, Pitbull, German Shorthair, Doberman and the Vizla.   You may be able to find a Weimaraner rescue group that only works with these breeds.

How Much Does a Wedding Singer Cost?

Wedding singers are talented individuals who perform different types of songs, either solo or with a band to back them up.  The cost of wedding singer will depend on the singer, the geographical location, if travel is required and the number of songs to be performed.

How much does a wedding singer cost?

On average, the cost of wedding singer will be either priced per song or they will be priced per hour.  The cost can range anywhere from $30 to $200 per song or can range from $60 to as much as $500 or more per hour, depending on the popularity, the number of singers and demand.  This is the price per singer, so if you were to need a duo or trio, then it’s safe to double or triple these costs.  From our research, however, it seems most paid $150 to $300 for their singer, but it can be much higher if the singer is in demand or is famous, etc.

Alexis Wong, a professional wedding singer, performs during the processional part of the wedding only.  She has several songs you can choose from her rates start at $200 to $300.

According to a forum member on WeddingBee.com, she said she had paid $750 for the cocktail hour and the ceremony combined, and this was for a grand total of four songs during the ceremony.  On another forum thread at WeddingWire.com, someone said she was quoted $550 for a duo, while another said she was quoted $275 for a two-hour session.

On HarmonyCentral.com, a former wedding singer chimed in and said he used to charge $150 for the ceremony, and for this price, he would provide classical music before the ceremony and a processional during the ceremony.

Now if you’re talking a famous celebrity, then, of course, the costs can be much higher.  Justin Timberlake, Madonna and Taylor Swift, for instance, could demand as much as $1 million, while Creed could perform for $100,000.  This is according to this Priceonomics graphic using Degy Entertainment numbers.

Wedding singer overview

Before the wedding starts, you will be able to consult with the singer and discuss what you’re looking for.  He or she will be able to show you what the music is going to sound like as well as give you a small sample of how it would sound live.  From there, you can figure out the songs being played, how long they will be played for and when they will be at the venue.

The estimate mentioned above should include the actual performance, the setup and all of the necessary equipment to perform their job such as the sheet music and stands.

A keepsake CD may be provided as a souvenir a few weeks after the wedding was performed.

What are the extra costs?

Travel charges may be added if the location is outside of their radius.

Tips are often given after the performance, usually about 15 to 20 percent of the total.

In the estimates above, some may include the rehearsal, while others may charge an additional fee to show up.

If you’re asking a singer to learn a new song, then he or she may charge an hourly fee to practice.

Tips to know:

Most wedding singers often provide samples of their work posted on their website, giving you the opportunity to listen to them before you contact them.  Don’t always judge entirely on the recording, however, as the live performance can often sound much better.

For every one hour, plan on the singer taking a 15-minute break.

If you don’t know where to look for a singer, consider using the free Gigmasters.com database.

How can I save money?

The church where the wedding will be held may be able to provide a choir during the ceremony.

Check with a local music school to see if any talented students are available for hire.

Saturday nights often tend to be the most expensive time to hire just about anyone or anything for your wedding.  If at all possible, consider having your wedding on a Friday night to cut down on the costs.

Purple Panther Tattoos, another professional studio located in Hollywood, notes a simple wedding band tattoo can cost anywhere from $60 to $200.

The Knot says a wedding tattoo can cost anywhere between $50 to $2,000, even for the most complex design.

Wedding band tattoo overview

Before the process begins, the artist will meet with the couple, or in some case, the individual who wants the band.  He or she will be able to draw up a drawing rendering on what it’s going to look like on your hand, and this can either be customized or simply from a design you may have found online or in a book at the studio.  The entire process, including the tattoo, shouldn’t take any more than two to three hours.  Designing, depending on the complexity, should take about an hour or so since the area is so small.

While an artist can put just about anything on your finger, the most popular designs include Celtic rings, simple line designs, letters and simple shapes such as a heart.

What are the extra costs?

An ointment/lubricant cream will be required after the tattoo has been completed and is highly recommended to keep the healing layer of the skin moisturized.  This may be included in the quote or could cost a few extra dollars. This ointment will have to be applied for the next couple days to prevent an infection from occurring.  It’s so important to follow the aftercare instructions to avoid your tattoo from drying out.  This also means using a fragrance-free moisturizer afterward and avoiding any contact for a few days after.

Due to the fading, plan on having the tattoo touched up every five to seven years.

Tips to know

According to some experts, the skin on your finger is known to be thin, and because of this, it’s not ideal for a wedding band tattoo.  Since the underside of the finger won’t hold ink for long, some may only have the tops of their finger tattooed, not around the entire finger.  In fact, what you may find is that some artists may avoid doing them altogether based on the fading issue alone.  The Alternative Bride says that if you want to avoid fading, it’s best to choose a darker ink or a simple design.

If you’re not sure if you would like a tattoo on your finger, consider a henna tattoo first to see if it looks good.  A henna tattoo can greatly resemble a real tattoo but will disappear after a few weeks.

Trends always change, so if you’re thinking about getting a new tattoo, make sure it may be relevant 20 years from now.  People who often get a wedding ring tattoo will either get their significant other’s initials engraved or will get a simple dark brand wrapped around their finger.  No matter which design you choose, try to stick to a simple shape or line to avoid a “blurry” appearance.

Blue and black tends to be the most popular color since they don’t fade as fast as others.

You don’t need to choose a design at a tattoo studio as most talented artists will be able to put anything they see on paper onto your finger.  Consider using Pinterest, Google Images or blog posts such as this one for inspiration.

According to Bustle, a finger tattoo, regardless of where you’re getting it tattooed, is going to hurt.  Since your fingers are full of nerves and the skin lays on the knuckle and bone, this area won’t have as much fat when compared to other parts of your body.  With no fat, there will be, unfortunately, no cushion to support the needle.  After it’s done, plan on having a sore finger for up to a week before it feels normal again.

For most tattoos, artists recommend keeping it simple if you want to get one.  In general, line art and letters will look good, but most will advise you to steer clear of images and designs since the ink can break apart of even bleed, making it hard to distinguish what the image actually is.

How can I save money?

Some tattoo establishments offer unique promos to attract new customers.  Yelp and their official website may list current promotions you could take advantage of.  You could also ask family or friends for a recommendation.  Regardless of who you choose, always make sure they have experience with ring tattoos, not just any tattoos, and always take a glance at their portfolio of their work to see what they are capable of doing.  Never feel pressured to get a tattoo or choose one based on the price.

How Much Do Wedding Cupcakes Cost?

Wedding cupcakes can either be served with the wedding cake or can replace the wedding cake entirely.  Wedding tradition is constantly changing and this is just one of many aspects of a wedding that can vary.  Wedding cupcakes can look like a wedding cake since the cupcakes are usually placed on pedestals of different shapes and sizes as seen in the picture below.

There are several advantages when using wedding cupcakes compared to the traditional wedding cake.  For starters, there will be a variety of flavors that can be served since each one is made individually, and the second advantage is that there is no need to slice.  Guests will simply be able to go up to the table, grab one and walk back to their seats.

The costs of wedding cupcakes depend on the number of cupcakes needed, the bakery being used, the flavor, the decorating options and geographical location.

Venison overview

Venison is either going to be found at local butchers who specialize in game animals or online.  Depending on the butcher, the venison may either be farmed or wild.  If wild, it will be a truly wild deer that was able to roam free, either hunted by the company or sold from someone else’s hunt.  If it were farmed, then it will be raised in a larger fenced in the environment, similar to the cattle you see on larger farms.  Depending on the state and regulations, certain rules will have to be followed in order to be sold.  For example, Broken Arrow Ranch says the deer on their farm must be at least three years old, naturally raised, able to graze freely in natural conditions and no growth hormones or steroids may be administered.

Most butchers online, unless noted, will sell their product frozen that’s vacuum sealed and meets USDA standards.

Deer, according to OutdoorLife, will be leaner and will have a “wilder” taste than cattle.  Three ounces of venison, according to the website, will contain 134 calories, 3 grams of total fat and 26 grams of protein.  It also has advantages in riboflavin, iron, niacin and vitamin B6.

What are the extra costs?

If you purchase the venison online, most may charge a minimum shipping fee; however, it may be waived if you meet a certain spending requirement.

Tips to know

If ordering online, you may find that most will have a minimum order, usually two to 10 pounds at a time.  Refer to the terms before committing to a purchase.

Venison vs beef

Venison, no matter where you purchase, it should always be natural and organic, even if purchased from a game farm.  Beef, on the other hand, can be natural and organic; however, some companies may inject chemicals, hormones or even antibiotic injections.

When hunting, according to this GoodGameHunting.com infographic, the costs can be $0.95 per pound for 80 pounds of edible meat, whereas the average cost of beef can be $4.23 per pound, making venison 78 percent cheaper.

Venison, as we discussed above, will have less cholesterol and is very low in saturated fat, making it a leaner and wilder animal than cattle.  It’s also rich in vitamins B6, B2, B3, B12 and iron.  Compared to beef, it’s also higher in protein and has fewer calories, with venison having 134 calories per three ounces, while beef has 247.  According to the Mayo Clinic, eating three ounces of either meat will pose no risk to your health.

One debate with venison, according to some experts, is the compound known as L-carnitine, which is found in both beef and venison.  L-carnitine has been linked to heart disease because the human stomach will break down this compound to produce trimethylamine N-oxide, the compound linked to heart and artery damage.

According to taste tests, venison seems to win most of the time due to its better taste, safety regulations and because some choose it as an ethical choice.

Even though the cost of beef is on the rise, retail beef can often be purchased for as little as $1 per pound, making it much cheaper than venison.

How can I save money?

The more you purchase at once, the more you may be able to save.  For example, a one-pound package of grounded meat could cost $8 per pound, but if you were to purchase a 10-pound package, you may only pay $6.50 per pound.

How Much Does a Veterinary Visit Cost?

A veterinary visit is similar to regular doctor’s visit, expect, it’s for your pet, of course. Some visits to the veterinarian are for regular checkups, while others may be for a specific illness or symptom if the animal is sick.  Regardless of what the reason is, you should always bring your pet to the vet if you recently adopted it or once per year to maintain your pet’s overall health.

The cost of a veterinary visit will depend on the reason for the visit, the vet clinic, complexity of the case, type of animal and where you live.

How much does a veterinary visit cost?

The cost to visit a veterinary alone without any type of procedures done can range anywhere from $35 to $65 per visit.  If you were to take your pet to a specialist or an emergency vet that’s opened 24 hours per day, then the costs can be closer to $125 to $250 for the visit alone.

PetCarRx says the office visit alone can average $45 to $55 and will depend on the geographical location and where you live.

According to Petmd.com, the main reason your vet visit will be so expensive will be due to the geographical location.  A vet in New York City, for example, will be much cheaper than one in the middle of nowhere.

Members on City-data.com said they pay anywhere from $48 to close to $100 for a complete first visit exam.

Veterinary visit overview

During any routine appointment, the office will usually do the following:

  1. Take the animal’s weight
  2. Listen to the heart
  3. Take the temperature
  4. Examine the eyes, nose, feet, and ears
  5. Examine the skin and the coat
  6. Look inside the mouth and at the teeth
  7. They may want to examine the feces, depending on the reason you’re bringing the pet in for
  8. Lastly, they will want to discuss the pet’s history, if you have had any problems since the last visit and if there are any concerns you would like to discuss.  If you were to go home with any medications or an upcoming surgery and/or treatment were needed in the future, then they can discuss this as well.

What are the extra costs?

The estimate mentioned above will include the office visit only and won’t include any other testing.  Vaccines, for example, can cost $15 to $25 each, depending on the vaccination needed.  This is often common for new puppies or kittens.  Other popular tests such as a heartworm test and fecal exam can all cost $25 to $50 per test.

Other tests, while not as common as the vaccines and fecal exam, can include a geriatric screening ($80 to $150), dental cleaning ($75 to $450), allergy test ($150 to $300) and/or surgery ($250+) for a specific issue.

Some of these additional tests will reoccur annually, while other procedures will be done only as needed.

House calls, where the vet comes to your home to perform the checkup, can cost $80 to $150, plus a mileage fee if they have to travel outside their radius.

Tips to know:

Don’t settle on the first office you come across; instead, visit the office in person unannounced and speak with the staff.  How do they respond?  Are they friendly?  It’s also ideal to pay close attention to the cleanliness and organization of the clinic.

Don’t wait until the last minute to book your veterinarian appointment, especially if it’s an emergency.  Good vets, on average, could have a wait time of up to a week.

How can I save money?

Get a regular veterinarian.  This will guarantee the vet will have an understanding of the pet’s medical history and may even lead to discounts.  Follow-up visits, for instance, can be much cheaper than the initial visit.

Consider getting pet insurance.  While this will cost a small monthly fee, it may save you money in the future if your pet ever needs any major medical attention.

Be aware of low prices you may receive over the phone or even see on the website.  These low prices can often get you in the door but will try to tack on unnecessary tests to bring up the costs.  Always ask the vet what you’re going to get with the price.

If you’re bringing your pet into the vet’s office for the first time, consider looking for packages.  These packages are designed to include the office visit, vaccine boosters and other tests depending on the pet’s age.

Larger vet chains, such as Banfield, often offer coupons for free exams or even discounted services for first-time customers.
