Bob Mackreth says the average Newfoundland dog can cost you anywhere from $1,000 to $2,000 from a decent breeder.

A few members on Reddit.com claimed they paid anywhere from $650 to as much as $2,000 for their dog.

What is going to be included in the adoption fee?

A reputable breeder should include a health certificate and a guarantee that will protect your investment for up to 90 days.  Also, the breeder should include,  up-to-date vaccinations, a travel crate if shipped and a health exam from a reputable vet.

What are the extra costs?

Due to the size of this dog, these dogs can eat two to three times more than the average dog.  Owners of this dog claim that it can cost more than $1,000 a year to keep this dog healthy just with dog food.  Don’t forget other recurring expenses with any dogs such as vaccinations, heartworm medication, flea repellant, food, accessories and routine/surprise vet visits.

Grooming is highly required for this particular breed, and it is ideal to set aside $75 to $150 per month for professional grooming services.

Purchasing a dog out of state can incur additional travel expenses.  Shipping a dog through an airline can cost $150 to $300 or more.

Puppy training, as with any other breed, is highly encouraged.  Obedience classes, depending on who you choose, can start at $85 per class and go up from there.

Tips to know:

As for its temperament, its known to be gentle, affectionate, devoted and very protective of its family.  Like most dogs, it will slobber and create quite the mess when drinking.   While its size can look intimidating, its deep bark may scare off would-be strangers, but most of the time, they are a little too friendly around those they do not know.

How Much Does CDL Training Cost?

Training for a CDL needs to be taken by individuals who would like to obtain a CDL.  The training program specializes in teaching potential truck drivers the necessary skills and knowledge to properly operate a truck.

There are many different companies that offer the training programs nationwide, and the length of these training classes can range anywhere from four to 10 weeks.

The price for CDL training depends largely on the school that is offering the class, if you’re being sponsored, the geographical area and if any financial aid and/or scholarships are involved.

How much does CDL training cost?

On average, the price for CDL training can average anywhere from $2,000 to $6,500 for the entire course.  Your private schools that are not associated with any trucking company will often cost about $3,000 to $6,000 and will take about eight weeks to complete the program.  Your company-sponsored schools, on the other hand, will be free; however, you will have to sign a contract with the company in order to get your tuition paid for.  If you were to quit before your contract, you would be responsible for the tuition.  Trucking companies that offer CDL training include Swift transportation, Stevens Transport and Schneider National.  For instance, with Swift, their training will cost $3,900, but you will be reimbursed the total costs as long as you work with them for 26 months.

Some schools, according to our research, may even charge on a “per lesson” basis.  For example, CDL College charges $250 for one lesson or $1,500 for the entire local Class A or B course.

Trucking Truth notes that most independent trucking schools will cost about $3,000 to $7,000.

Factors that affect the cost

What kind of level?

There are three types of licenses available:  class A, B and C.  If you were to take a class A training course, you would pay much more than a B or C course.

Type of school:

There are two common types of schools:  the independent schools and corporate schools that are run by the trucking companies.  Just like a college, the costs will depend on which institution you choose.

CDL training overview

The payment for CDL training includes the entire length of the course until it is finished.  The use of the vehicles, as well as the instructors, will be included in the payment, and the average course shouldn’t take any more than four to six weeks on average.

Schools will teach you state and federal regulations and offer hands-on experience to help you become comfortable behind the wheel.  Upon graduating, you should know about the long haul, short haul, local operations, the basics for over-the-road travel, rules, regulations and being prepared for the CDL test.

Upon completion of the class, the student can successfully apply for a CDL license at the local DMV, but before a CDL license is given, most states are going to require that a written test and road test is taken to ensure that all rules and regulations are followed.

What are the extra costs?

An additional cost for CDL training includes the registration fee that you will need to pay when you sign up for the training program.  The price for the registration fee depends on the company and will usually range anywhere from $100 to $150.

Some schools may charge an additional fee for books, uniforms, and medical tests.

Special endorsements can cost extra if not included with the tuition.

Before choosing any school, do a quick search online to see what kind of reputation they have.  What are the other students saying?   Be sure to look at both the good and the bad.

See how much driving time you will get with your training program.  All schools will vary and the best way to learn is by actually driving the truck.

To save money, try to look for a company that will provide the training at a lower cost or even free.  If you’re able to find this type of offer, keep in mind these companies may force you to sign a contract before this training is provided.  If the new hire does not live up to the contract, the training will have to be paid back.

Consider checking with your local community college as most are going to offer these classes for the best rate.

Check with the local school to see if there are any type of financial aid programs available or special funding.  For example, some trucking schools will accept many of the GI Bill programs.

Like college, you don’t need to pay your tuition up front.  Consider signing up for a student loan to help make budgeting easier for the month.

Chances are there are a few independent trucking schools in your area.  Just like comparing colleges, visit at least three to five websites and/or campuses and see what they can offer for you and what they charge.  Don’t focus solely on the money, however.  Pay close attention to their job placement program, their educational materials and the experience of the teachers.

How Much Does a CDL License Cost?

A CDL, or commercial driver’s license, is a type of driver’s license required in the United States for drivers who would like to operate any vehicle that has a gross weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more.  Before you get a CDL, you will need to take a state test to become licensed.  The price for obtaining a CDL can be different depending on the state where you apply.

On average, a CDL license can cost anywhere from $8 to as much as $150 for the license alone.  There three types of licenses: Class A, Class B, and Class C.  The fees listed on the chart below are for the license only, and this will not include any additional fees such as the schooling and skills test.

The fee for getting CDL will include the permit to take the license.  The basic tests such as the skills test, vision test and knowledge test will also be included with the payment for obtaining a CDL.   Some states may require that additional tests are taken.  Once the skills and knowledge test is completed, a grade will be issued, and upon successful completion, a CDL license will be issued.  This license will enable you to operate a commercial vehicle throughout the United States.

On CNN Money, they said the costs will depend on the shelter and the breed of cat you want to adopt.  For example, the kittens will cost more than the adult cats because the kittens will take more time to take care of.  Plus, when people are looking to adopt a cat, they often want to adopt a kitten, not a grown adult.  The article also notes that breed specific rescue groups will charge more than a shelter group that doesn’t focus on a specific breed. On average, fees can be as little as $25 to close to $300.

Before you can even adopt a cat, the adoption agency will ask you to fill out paperwork, which will include personal information, your experience with pets and other crucial information.  With this paperwork, they will then decide if you’re a good fit for the adoption process.

Most shelters today should neuter or spay the cat free of charge, and they do this in hopes of limiting the number of stray cats.  If unsure, be sure to ask the rescue group about what they do to their cats before they are sent out for adoption.  In California, for example, they require pets are spayed or neutered before they leave the shelter.

Customized neon signs can cost anywhere from $200 to as much as $1,500.  Many neon sign manufacturers can add logos, special colors, as well as wording; basically, if you can draw it, it can be converted into a neon sign.  For instance, when researching some customized neon signs, we were quoted about $450 for a basic 18×24-inch sign.  When customizing, a company will ask how many lines you want, which size you want it to be and if you want to include any pictures.

Rare neon signs that are collectibles can commonly reach far into the $1,000 price range.

According to a forum post over on TheNest.com, forum members on this particular thread stated that hemming cost them anywhere from $56 for three pairs of jeans to as much as $10 to $22 for one pair of jeans.

How Much Does Heartworm Treatment Cost?

Heartworm treatment is a procedure that attacks a parasitic roundworm that resides in the pulmonary arterial system, commonly transmitted via a mosquito.  The heartworm is a thread like worm that usually lives in dogs, cats, wolves and other animals, and if left untreated, it can potentially be fatal.  While these worms can also infect humans, it only happens in very rare circumstances.

There are different ways to remove heartworms from the host, but drug treatment is the most common treatment used today.  Other methods include monthly topicals that you apply to the skin and injections that last about six months.

The price for the treatment depends on the type of treatment that will be used to get rid of the heartworms, the weight of the animal, the vet clinic, geographical location and how advanced the situation is.

How much does heartworm treatment cost?

On average, the complete treatment process can cost anywhere from $200 for the assessment and tests to as much as $1,000+ for the full treatment plan.  

The first visit to the vet alone can cost $65 to $95 for just the visit and won’t include any tests.  If a CBC (complete blood count)test is conducted, this can be another $75 to $115.  Chest x-rays can be another $125 to $225, bringing the total close to $300 just for the initial testing and vet visit.

Add in the two to three injections, which can cost about $125 to $250 each, and the total can easily be $600 to $1,000, but some vets may package the treatments into more affordable options.

For example, when doing our research, we had found a woman in Tennessee brought her Great Dane into the vet’s office for heartworm treatment.  After everything was said and done, the final bill was $735.  Also, during our research, we had found a rescue clinic — Mazie’s Mission Rescue Group — that charged $200 to $350 for two injections and post oral medication.

Emancipet, another vet office that posted their rates, said they charged anywhere from $225 to $495, depending on the size of the dog.

Over the counter medication can be purchased online or through pet stores without having to go to the vet’s office.  These tablets can cost anywhere from $15 to $45, but because these are not as effective as a vet treatment, it is best to consult with a professional before administering these drugs.

As for cats, there is no known treatment today, but unlike dogs, cats can often recover on their own without the help of medication.

Heartworm treatment overview

At a minimum, the estimates provided above should include the evaluation exam, the heartworm test, Doxycycline tablets if needed, blood work, pain medication and the injections.

Prior to any treatments, the vet will first want to assess the animal to determine the risk and level and to confirm the heartworm.   During this assessment, they will take blood work to check the organs, x-rays to glance at the heart and lungs, and an ultrasound if they deem the situation is severe.  Based on these tests, the vet will be able to determine how severe the heartworm is and they will be able to create a detailed treatment plan.  Most treatment plans will involve a series of injections, known as Melarsomine; however, if the problem isn’t too severe, they may recommend a course of antibiotics to see if it helps.

Following this injection, the vet will ask you to keep your dog restricted for weeks as the worm dies and breaks off.  Most of the time, the worm will be carried through the blood to the lungs, where it’s eventually reabsorbed by the body.  The entire treatment from start to finish will take 60 days to kill the worms.

Most vets will inject at the time of diagnosis and ask you to wait up to one month before coming back for another two injections, which will be 24 hours apart.  After the final injections, the dog will have to be restricted for up to eight weeks.

What are the extra costs?

Your vet may require follow-up tests/visits that won’t be included in the initial costs.

Medication will be prescribed after the injections have been administered.  This can include Doxycycline, Prednisone and Tramadol. Depending on the weight of your dog, this medication can cost another $40 to $75.

If an extra injection is required, this can add another $150 to $250 to the cost.

Preventative measures need to be taken once the situation improves.  Heartworm preventative medication will cost about $60 to $100 per year, depending on the dog’s weight.

In some extreme cases, the dog may need to stay overnight at the vet offices.  Each stay may be billed separately, depending on the billing policy.

Tips to know

Symptoms may include coughing, the unwillingness to exercise, difficulty breathing, an enlarged abdomen or having no energy.

There are four class types:  1, 2, 3 and 4.  Class one will show very few symptoms with the exception of a cough here and there.  Class two will have mild to moderate symptoms and with an x-ray, the vet will be able to notice changes in the lungs and heart.  Class three will also show heart and lung changes, along with a persistent cough and fatigue after activity.  The worst level – class four – can prevent the blood from flowing the heart because the heartworm is so large, potentially causing a cardiovascular collapse.

Some shelters may recommend the slow kill heartworm treatment, but studies have shown this treatment may not eliminate all the worms, even 18 months after the treatment has been administered.

How can I save money?

Check with local rescues or animal shelters.  Many have great connections with veterinarians that will perform the procedure at a fraction of the cost.

It is best to talk with at least two or three vets before bringing the animal in.  Many vet offices are more than happy to give a quote over the phone.

If you have pet insurance, this procedure may be covered depending on your policy.

A nebulizer machine is a device that administers medication through the air in the form of a mist.  These machines are commonly used to treat asthma, cystic fibrosis, and other respiratory diseases and is often designed to help those who have a hard time breathing.  Using a tube, such as a mouthpiece or a face mask, the liquid medicine will be inhaled directly into the lungs.

The cost of a nebulizer machine will depend on the brand, the features and where it’s purchased.

How much a nebulizer machine cost?

On average, a nebulizer machine can cost anywhere from $20 to $120.  The popular PARI reusable nebulizer, for instance, retails for about $20.

PersonalHealthInsurance.com says the average nebulizer is usually about $50 for the smaller models, but the fancier versions can cost more than $100.

WebMD says most home nebulizers will cost $50 and up, plus the cost of accessories.  They also note portable nebulizers will cost a bit more.

Nebulizer machine overview

There a few different types of nebulizers, but the most widely used version will be known as an atomizer.  This type of nebulizer will use a compressor to operate.  Another common type, known as the ultrasonic nebulizer, will use sound waves to transfer the medication.  These machines will come in virtually all shapes and sizes and some portable units can be even as small as a wallet so you’re able to carry it around with you for the day.  Some are even shaped like an animal, for instance, to accommodate children who use the machine.

Nebulizers can either be charged electrically or via a battery.  Household models, which usually sit on a tabletop, will need to be plugged into an electrical outlet, while a portable version will run on either disposable or rechargeable batteries.

The Neapolitan Mastiff is a larger dog that is known to guard and protect its family because of their instincts.  According to the AKC, these dogs can weigh up to 150 pounds and be as tall as 31 inches.  Females can weigh 20 to 30 pounds less than a male.  Not considered a dog for beginners, these dogs are well socialized but may require a lot of training.

The cost of the Neapolitan Mastiff can be anywhere from $900 to as much as $3,000 based on the factors mentioned above.

Dogs that have a poorly altered tail or a minor fault such as a color spot can cost as little as $600 to $1,000.  With this particular breed, many buyers are fairly strict with the appearance of the dog’s coat.
