How Much Does an HDMI Cable Cost?

An HDMI, or High Definition Multimedia Interface cable, is a compact digital audio and video transmitter of uncompressed digital data.  The HDMI cable is the digital alternative to regular analog standards.  Today, the HDMI cable is used in many digital entertainment devices such as Blu-ray players and video game consoles.  The result is a clearer picture and excellent sound clarity that far exceeds the capabilities of regular analog cables.  The price of the cable depends on the quality, length of the cable and retailer you purchase it from.

How much does an HDMI cable cost?

On average, an HDMI cable can cost anywhere from $2 to as much as $20, depending on the brand, size and where you purchase it.  While there are cables that can be more in the $50 price range, most HDMI cables are going to work the same, so it is essential that you do your homework before spending three to five times more than the industry average.   A larger cable, for example, such as a 100-foot HDMI cable could cost $35 to $65.  Refer to our table below to see what most major retailers are charging.

Another type of cable, such as the micro HDMI to standard HDMI cable, can cost about $5 to $7 per three-foot cable.  Another type — a thin or slim HDMI cable — which is a lot thinner than the average cable, can cost about 30 to 40 percent more.

The longer the cable, the more you are likely going to pay.

MakeUseOf.com says never spend more than $10, and if you do, you have been robbed.  When doing your homework, understand all HDMI cables will work the same.

RetailerAverage Price Found
Amazon$7 for 6-foot AmazonBasics; however, third-party cables for about $3 to $5 can be found.
Best Buy$6 for 6-foot cable
Fry's$5 for 6-foot cable
Home Depot$10 for 12-foot cable
Monoprice$3 per 6-foot cable
NewEgg$3 to $5 for 6-foot cable
Office Depot$12 for 6-foot cable
RadioShack$9 for 6-foot cable
Target$11 for 4-foot cable
Walmart$4 to $8 per 6-foot cable

What is exactly is HDMI?

HDMI stands for High-Definition Multimedia Interface and is an upgrade from the analog cable using a digital signal.  This signal is delivered between the two devices, and as long as the cable isn’t flawed, it should work without fail.  Ever since there was a push for HD televisions, this cable has become the standard way of connecting digital equipment to the TV.

These cables are a “standard,” which means every cable will do the same job, regardless of what you pay.  This isn’t like a car where you’re going to get special features when you pay a pretty penny.  When purchasing, pay close attention to the description or the box to see what kind of cable it is.  For instance, if it says “1.3a,” then it means it can meet the specifications of all HDMI 1.3a cables.

There are four kinds of HDMI cables on the market:  high speed with ethernet, high speed without the ethernet, standard speed with ethernet and standard speed without ethernet.  The standard cables will be able to handle up to 1080i, while the higher speed cables can handle speeds beyond 1080p.  Some newer products, such as the Ethernet-over-HDMI, is a cable designed for equipment, albeit rare, that uses the Ethernet-over-HDMI compatibility.

What are the extra costs?

An HDMI extension cable, if you needed to extend the cable by six feet or so, could cost about $2 to $5 for another three to six feet.

Tips to know

There’s no such thing as an HDMI 1.4 cable or a special cable designed for 3D or television.

The picture quality will always be the same no matter how long your cable is.  Standard lengths include 3, 6, 10, 15 and 25 feet, but there are cables that can be up to 100 feet long.

If you see the term “CL2” or “CL3,” it means it will be coated with a special material so the cable produces less toxic gas if the cable were to catch on fire.

How can I save money?

While all HDMI cables are the same, it doesn’t mean they will work without fail.  Pay close attention to the reviews online to see if any problems arise in the future after a purchase.

Consider staying away from cables that cost more than $50.  Stores such as Best Buy push them because of the higher profit margin, and while the employees may claim that these cables can do more than the regular cables, there will be no difference and you’ll just be wasting your money and giving those employees a bonus.  As noted above, you shouldn’t be spending more than $10 on an HDMI cable.

How Much Does it Cost to Build a Deck?

How much does a deck cost?

On average, pressure treated wood is going to be the cheapest way to go in terms of materials.  Plan on spending anywhere from $3 to as much as $18 per square foot depending on the type of pressure treated wood that is being used.  Refer to our table below for the most popular options, along with what most people are paying on average.

Type of Decking MaterialInstallation Cost (per square foot)
Azek Deck$9 to $13
Azek Deck$7 to $11
Cedar Deck$8 to $11
Composite$22 to $33
Concrete Deck$6 to $10
Genovations Deck$9 to $14
Insul Deck$3 to $5
Polypropylene-Based Decking$7 to $11
Pressure Treated Deck$1.50 to $3
Redwood Deck$18 to $30
Teak Deck$9 to $14
Tropical Hardwood$8 to $13

Common deck materials

Composites and Plastic:  Plastic composite-based wood will require little maintenance and common options include polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride/PVC.

The pros of composite

This material is extremely durable and can’t splinter like wood.

It will be mold proof.

No stain will be required; however, some can contain real wood and it can be stained to your desired color.

The boards will be hollow, allowing you to easily run wires through for lighting.

The cons of composite

Since this is a synthetic material, it won’t accept stain like wood does.

While it is durable and considered to be maintenance free, the price can be three to four times the amount of other materials.

If it were to ding, the board would have to be replaced 100 percent.

The material can retain heat easier, making it uncomfortable for those who live in warmer climates.

Natural Wood:  Wood is the most common option for homeowners due to the affordability and the beauty if offers.  Like composites, wood can come in many varieties, ultimately affecting the price.  Common species include redwood, ipe, a Brazilian hardwood, tigerwood, another Brazilian hardwood, cedar and bamboo.

The pros of natural wood

It will have a natural look and can resist pests.

Some wood, such as cedar, can resist rot, making it great for a wetter climate.

The cons of natural wood

It only has a lifespan of about 15 to 20 years, even if taken care of properly.

To retain its color, it will need to be painted every year.

Due to some of the soft edges, it can get beat up pretty quick.

Pressure Treated Wood:  As stated earlier, pressure-treated wood will be the cheapest option for those on a budget.  This wood, as long as properly sealed every year, can last for quite some time.

The pros of pressure treated wood

This wood is one of the most affordable options.

It can hold up well, lasting up to 40 years if taken care of properly.

It won’t dent and/or scratch easily.

Due to the chemicals inside pressure treated wood, pests won’t be attracted to it.

The cons of pressure treated wood

Some people don’t like the idea of chemicals inside the wood.  If burned, it could release toxic gases, making it hard to get rid of.

What are the extra costs?

Depending on the height, stairs and landings leading down to the ground are going to affect the price tag.  Most contractors are going to charge based on the height of the steps themselves, and on average, a staircase will cost anywhere from $450 to $1,500 depending on the height.

Decorative borders around the outside of the deck, as well as any electrical, ran through the deck for lighting, can be extra depending on what kind of lighting and design is required.  Lights can cost about $30 to $100 per piece, plus another $30 to $50 to install.

Some owners opt to install heaters to provide heat on the cooler nights.  A post heater, which mounts to the wall or hang similar to a table lamp, can cost about $100 to $350.  On the other hand, mister systems can be installed as well for those who live in a cooler climate and can cost around $100 to $250.

Adding seats around the deck can be an option if you want more than patio furniture.  Built-in benches can be an additional $300+ or so.

Additional features, such as flower boxes, benches, privacy wall, and built-in storage bins, will add to the total cost.  Flower boxes and benches, for example, can cost anywhere from $50 to $300 extra per object installed.

While standard railings will be included with a deck quote, special railings made of glass or metal can be added for an additional fee.  Cable deck railing, for example, can cost $1 per linear foot.

Consider the landscaping that will be needed around the deck after the job is performed such as a retaining wall, rocks and grass.  Also, if you want to add stones underneath the deck, many options are available.

Skirting around the deck that covers everything under the deck will run extra.

After the deck is completed, a stain or paint will have to be applied.  Some contractors will include this in the overall quote, while others do not.  The deck will then have to be stained annually to retain its appearance.

Permits will be required for most jobs, and depending on where you live, this can be an additional $50 to $100.

As an added cost, plan on your property taxes going up since the local city/town tax assessor will assume your property value will go up.

Demolishing a deck can add another $1 to $3 per square foot, depending on the size and distance they have to travel to bring in a dumpster.

Home Advisor says you should be prepared to spend extra for the following:  grading, foundation repair, banding, staining, UV blockage, waterproofing, installing corrosion-resistant fasteners, framing, rails and/or installing stairs.

Tips to know:

When getting a deck installed, make sure it’s going to be covered by your homeowner’s insurance policy.

Before hiring any contractor, always make sure they are licensed and insured.  To confirm, check the state’s licensing agency to make sure their license is currently active.

How can I save money?

It is always best to get a quote from at least two to four different contractors in your area to see what they can do for you.  Consider using HomeAdvisor.com to have contractors contact you with quotes for free.

Many deck contractors offer some sort of financing since most know that many pay that amount of money up front.  To take advantage, be sure to ask your contractor to see what kind of options are available.

How Much Does Dog Debarking Surgery Cost?

Debarking a dog is a surgical procedure that many veterinarians perform, often referred to as a cordectomy.  The “official” veterinary medical term for the procedure is ventriculocordectomy.  During this process, the vet will remove the dog’s vocal cords to permanently reduce the volume of their bark.  This process not only has many risks, but it has also been outlawed in countries such as the United Kingdom since many activists find this procedure to be inhumane.  The cost of this procedure is going to greatly depend on the vet performing the procedure and geographical location.

How much does dog debarking surgery cost?

On average, the surgical procedure is going to cost anywhere from $75 to as much as $300.  Keep in mind that many vet offices may not perform the procedure as they find that is highly unnecessary and unethical.  When talking with a vet, they will recommend many other alternatives such as a bark collar.  The Banfield Vet Clinics, for instance, has banned this procedure across its 750+ locations.

According to NoiseHelp.com, the cost will depend on the technique being used, the geographical location and the veterinarian performing the procedure.  All in all, the costs can be anywhere between $50 to $400.

Dog debarking surgery

This procedure is performed through the dog’s mouth under a general anesthesia. Using a biopsy punch or a type of scissor, the vet will then create an incision through the throat and larynx and will remove a small amount of tissue on the dog’s vocal cords.  When this surgery is performed, a dog will still be able to bark – it will simply be quieter.

There are two common procedures performed:  the oral technique and the laryngotomy technique.  The oral technique will be quick, simple and will be performed through the dog’s open mouth, whereas the laryngotomy technique will create an incision in the dog’s neck.  The ultimate goal is to lower the dog’s bark volume.

After the procedure, the dog won’t completely silence the dog, but instead, the sound will be “softer,” usually about half the sound of what it was before.  The dog will still be able to growl, whine, howl and yip.  A newspaper in the past said the sound would be equivalent to someone who may have had laryngitis.

What are the extra costs?

Medication, as well as follow-up appointments, will be recommended when the procedure has been done.  Due to the complexity of this surgery, the dog will more than likely have to stay in the hospital for up to three days.  The follow-up appointments may or may not be included in the initial quote.

Due to the complexity of the surgery, scar tissue can come back causing blockage in the dog’s throat.  If this were to happen, surgery would have to be performed again.

Depending on the vet office, general anesthesia may be charged in addition to the vet examination fee.

Tips to know:

This procedure still allows the dog to communicate, but the dog won’t bark as loud as before.

While other strategies, such as shock collars and debarking devices can work, many find this procedure can lead to more stress for a dog, especially if there are complications.

With a lot of negative things being said about the procedure online, there are some benefits some people often don’t think of such as the dog retaining its way of barking and it won’t be the subject of disapproval, being reprimanded every time it barks outside; this can eventually lead to less stress for a dog.  Lastly, debarking can often allow the dog to explore the outdoors more since it won’t be restrained inside.  The NAIA, for instance, says it isn’t a cruel and barbaric procedure and is simpler than removing testicles or a uterus.

As with any surgery, risks may be involved such as blood loss, infection or as the result of anesthesia.

How can I save money?

This procedure should be the absolute last resort.  In fact, many experts do not recommend it at all.  There are many various barking devices that can train your dog not to bark when it is not supposed to.  Barking devices can cost anywhere from $20 to $100 or more.  Keep in mind that training your dog too much with one certain procedure may cause more stress than normal.  Talk to your vet for more information, and always consider this as a last resort.

Talk with a local obedience class to see what they can do for your dog.  You will find that these classes can teach your dog tricks that will discourage them from barking in the future.

How Much Does Deadbolt Lock Installation Cost?

How much does a deadbolt lock installation cost?

On average, a locksmith is going to charge a service charge minimum no matter what job is performed.  A service charge is going to vary anywhere from $35 to as much as $65, depending on the company.  This will be paid, regardless of what’s being done.

If a deadbolt has already been installed in the past and a new one needs to be installed, a locksmith will generally charge anywhere from $15 to $45 to replace it with a new one.  This won’t include the deadbolt itself.

If a new deadbolt hole has to be installed, the fees can range from $55 to $125.  This job will generally take a handyman or locksmith up to 30 to 60 minutes to complete the job.

If a deadbolt has to be re-keyed and not replaced, the cost can be anywhere from $10 to $25 per door.

Overall, plan on spending anywhere from $75 to $215 for the complete installation process of a deadbolt.

Angie’s List interviewed a locksmith and he stated he would charge $55 for the trip, $35 for a basic deadbolt and another $45 to install on a wood door or $50 for a metal door, bringing the average job to $135 to $145.

Deadbolt installation

A locksmith will be able to recommend deadbolts that meet your budget.  A deadbolt will be installed by either installing a new hole or by replacing the old deadbolt with a new one.

During the job, a locksmith will either install a new hole to fit the new lock or if a hole already exists, a new lock will simply be replaced and installed.  If a hole hasn’t been installed, a new hole will be drilled and cut to size

How Much Does a Certified Check Cost?

A certified check is a check that verifies that there is a sufficient amount of funds in the bank account to complete the transaction.  A certified check is commonly used for transactions such as a down payment on a home, a car purchase or a larger purchase where the funds need to be guaranteed, and unlike a normal check, these checks cannot bounce and will ensure the recipient that the cash will be there.  The cost of a certified check will depend on the amount needed and the bank where the transaction is processed.

How much does a certified check cost?

No matter what bank you use, they are more than likely going to have a service that caters to certified checks.  These transactions are commonly done with the bank teller, and on average, plan on spending anywhere from $0 to $15 for a service fee.  It is not uncommon for a bank to give out a certified check for free to its customers, especially if you’re in a higher tiered customer category.  Refer to our table below to see what popular banks are charging for their certified checks, but do keep in mind that based on our research, we had found most banks only issue cashier’s checks and tend to avoid the certified checks.

Union Bank$10 for customers and $15 for non-customers. Cashier's checks only.
Wells Fargo$10 or free for those with PMA checking.

What is a certified check?

A certified check is going to guarantee the recipient that the funds are available, and this check cannot bounce like a personal check.    This check will be written by the account holder and guaranteed by the bank.  With this type of check, the bank will make sure the account holder has enough funds in his or her account and will also make sure the signature matches up to the one on file.  Also, when the certified check is written, the bank will set this money aside so it can’t be used while the check is active.  The whole point of this check, like a cashier’s check, is to assure the buyer the funds are available.

Under the UCC, the bank and the customer can be held liable for the payment.

Upon some certifications, a bank may impose certain rules such as “void after 60 days.”

How do you get a certified check?  To get a certified check, visit your bank branch in person since most won’t be able to accommodate this request online, although some do.  In person, the bank will certify you have the funds available and will certify the check by stamping the check you wrote out once this and your identity is approved.

What are the extra costs?

If you do not have a bank account with the particular bank you’re looking to get a certified check with, most are going to charge more than those that have a bank account with them.  Be prepared to pay more than those that have an account.

Amounts that are more than $500 are going to have a higher surcharge than those that are less than $500.  The denomination of the check can influence the check fee.

Tips to know

People often wonder what the difference between a certified check and cashier’s check is.  While both are considered an “official check” by the bank and are guaranteed payment, the biggest difference is that with a cashier’s check, the bank will receive the money from the purchaser and then issue a check for that amount, guaranteeing it at face value.  A certified check, on the other hand, will have funds drawn against the bank, not against a personal account, written like a check.  In other words, a cashier’s check is basically paid with cash, while a certified check will hold the funds in an account.

Fraudulent checks are rampant, even with certified checks.  Even though it can be easy to spot some fakes such as grammatical errors or a typo, most criminals can make it very hard to distinguish what’s real and what’s fake.  To make certain, call a bank before cashing or completing a transaction to make sure it’s real, but before you do so, don’t call the number on the check as this can be fake as well.  Instead, obtain the number online and use the official number to play it safe.

Other ways to check for a fake is to match the official bank address with the one on the check, as well as match up to other information such as the phone number and bank spelling.

Banks won’t certify starter checks or line of credit checks.  Be sure to check their policies before proceeding.

How to cash a certified check without a bank account?  If the recipient doesn’t have a bank account to cash this check, they can go to the bank where the check was issued.  As long as they can provide a government I.D. and a thumbprint, the bank will be more than happy to cash it.

How long does it take for a certified check to clear?  Once deposited, it can take up to two days to clear.  According to TD Bank, their policy states the first $5,000 will be available on the first business day.

How can I save money?

Credit Unions are commonly known to have lower rates.

Another place to check for a certified check is the local post office.

Check with your bank before you go to any other bank.  Most banks are more than happy to give you a discounted rate if you are already a customer.

How Much Does Ceiling Fan Installation Cost?

Ceiling fans are not easy to install, especially if you don’t have experience with electrical work.  If you want to hire a professional, the price of one is going to greatly depend on the company, the complexity of the job, as well as the number of fans that need to be installed.

New Ceiling Fan by amboo who?, on Flickr

How much does a ceiling fan install cost?

On average, most electricians are going to charge anywhere from $75 to $220 to install a ceiling fan in an existing lightbox.  If there is a light already in place where you want to place a ceiling fan, the electrician can simply take out the old light and replace it with a fan of your choice.

If the wiring isn’t there and a new junction box needs to be installed, then the prices can go up.  If wiring is needed as well as a new outlet box, the cost can be anywhere from $175 to as much as $350 depending on the complexity of the job such as the height of the ceiling, if you have an attic access and where the wall switch is located.  Don’t be surprised if the quote surpasses this price range if the job was deemed to be too difficult.

Many major home improvement stores such as Home Depot and Lowe’s will run ceiling fan installation specials that can range from $75 to $120 when you purchase a fan through them.  This price will only be good for jobs where a ceiling fan simply needs to be replaced.

According to the website TheHousingForum.com, they claim that it would cost upwards of $150 to have a professional installation done if there was already a light outlet installed.  For those who want to do it yourself, the costs should be within the $100 range.

Ceiling fan install overview

During the job, an electrician will be able to assemble the fans as well as layout the appropriate framework if a new box has to be installed.  He or she will then be able to replace the older light fixture with a new ceiling fan in the area of your choice.  A professional will usually take up to two hours to install one fan; however, it could be a pinch more if they had to run wires.

If the lightbox hasn’t been installed, the contractor will more than likely have to run the wire through the attic access, connecting the wires to a circuit breaker box.

What are the extra costs?

Of course, the ceiling fan will be an additional expense to factor in, and depending on the size, decor, mount type and where you purchase it, the average ceiling fan can cost anywhere from $45 to $85 for the most basic model to as much as $350 for a higher-end ceiling fan made of quality materials with a remote control.

Additional parts may be needed on the job such as electrical boxes or light switches, which can be charged extra.

If you want a remote for your fan, many brands have remotes that are sold separately.  Ceiling fan remotes can cost anywhere from $25 to $60.

If the junction box attached to the ceiling needs to be reinforced or replaced, this may cost an additional $20 to $40 to replace it.

If a lightbox hasn’t been installed and the contractor has to install a new light box and run wires, the costs can be significantly more.

Other complexities, such as no attic access, high ceilings and no local wiring above the ceiling, can add to the total cost.

Most states won’t require a permit if the light is simply being replaced; however, if a light is being added to a newer location, then a new permit may be required, depending on the state you live in.  If required, the permit should cost about $50 to $150.

How can I save money?

Most electricians will cut a deal when you have more than one fan that needs to be installed.  Count on getting all your fans or light fixtures done at once to save the most money.

Consider purchasing your fans through a store such as Home Depot to get a special ceiling fan installation deal.  There are many times when you’ll find these fans not only on sale, but you can also receive rebates for your purchase and more.

If you plan on hiring a professional, consider getting multiple quotes for free from HomeAdvisor.com.  Here, you simply explain your job and licensed and insured contractors will be able to give you an estimate.

Don’t always choose an electrician based on the price.  Always make sure they are licensed, insured and are up to date with their credentials.  In the age of the Internet, most of this information can easily be found by searching your local state’s license database.  Even if they are licensed and insured, look at their reviews to see what other people are saying.

How Much Does a Cease and Desist Letter Cost?

A cease and desist letter, also known as a C&D, is a letter written in order to stop certain activities such as trademark violations, harassment, stalking, slander and more.  The purpose of this letter is to tell the recipient that all activity must be stopped or else legal action may ensue.  While a C&D can be written by any individual, it is highly recommended that a lawyer is brought in to make sure the letter is written properly.  The cost of writing a letter is going to depend on the lawyer, the complexity of the issue, your geographical location, who you’re going after and if the case has to go to court.

How much does a cease and desist letter cost?

Most lawyers are going to charge on an hourly basis, and these hourly rates can range anywhere from $50 to $950 per hour.  For something such as a cease and desist letter, plan on spending $125 to $300 per hour to have a letter written up.

Most cease and desist letters will take up to two to eight hours to write up a letter due to the fact the attorney will have to conduct research for you as well as ensure that you have the right to send one out legally.  It is wise to set aside as much as $750 to $3,500 to complete the entire process; however, if it’s something as simple as “warning” someone, it could be as little as $200 to $400.  Bruce Burdick, an intellectual property law attorney from Illinois, said on Avvo.com that warning a large company, such as Nike or Kodak, could require a different approach than most and could require a different situation.

For example, AllisonTaylor.com states that the generation of a cease and desist letter with their firm can be around $1,200, but again, this is going to depend on the complexity of your situation.

Andra Marie Vaccaro, an intellectual property law attorney from California, says you should be able to spend under $500 if you have all of the necessary paperwork.

Cease and desist letter overview

Most lawyers will be able to consult with you ahead of time to let you know what they can do for you and if they recommend something such as a C&D.  There may be times when a C&D isn’t necessary and the lawyer won’t pursue the case since all attornies have ethical obligations to follow.

If a C&D is necessary, the lawyer will be able to research your case and write up a letter that pinpoints the exact problem, as well as what the recipient can do to resolve the issue.  After the C&D is sent out, the attorney will be able to follow up and keep you updated with the process.

This type of letter is commonly sent out for harassment issues, copyright infringement, trademark infringement and collection agency harassment.

To see what a cease and desist template looks like, the Jux Law Firm has examples on its website.

What are the extra costs?

Calls and emails after the letter is sent out will be charged depending on the time the attorney spent.  Since there is a good chance that the recipient is going to reply, it is best to have your attorney to stay in contact with the party.

If the party fails to respond, an attorney can take the issue one step further taking it to court, which would result in higher fees.

Tips to know

Even though an attorney can write a letter, ask them if it’s going to be effective.  For example, many websites will simply ignore your request and you could be faced with a high bill and no action.

When considering a letter, known what litigation you may ensue, even if this isn’t your goal.  While most people hope the other party caves in when reading the first C&D letter, this isn’t always the case.  Instead, the other party could file a lawsuit against you claiming the letter didn’t compromise of any infringement.

Depending on the situation, other documents may be required to follow through with the process.  For example, an affidavit or license agreement may be required.

While you can write your own cease and desist letter, it is not wise to do so since there are so many legal implications that you may not know about.  BlawgIt.com goes into detail about why you should hire a professional in your area.

Many lawyers will offer a free consultation.  This is your chance to meet with one and discuss your options.  Try to find a reputable lawyer in your area that deals with these type of letters.  If you don’t know where to look for a lawyer, LegalMatch.com offers a service that can connect you with a good lawyer.

How Much Does a Cesarean Section Cost?

A cesarean section, also commonly known as a “c-section,” is a surgical procedure that involves more than one incision in the mother’s abdomen during pregnancy.  A cesarean section is commonly performed when there is more than one baby or there are complications with the pregnancy itself.  While most cesarean sections are recommended by a doctor during a baby delivery, many mothers today plan to schedule one to avoid a natural childbirth.  The cost of a cesarean section will depend on your insurance coverage, location, the hospital, geographical location, what the facility includes in the bill and doctor performing the procedure.

How much does a cesarean section cost?

Without a health insurance policy, a cesarean section can cost anywhere from $13,000 to as much as $32,000.  This is going to greatly depend on the factors mentioned above such as the hospital, your insurance, as well as the surgeon performing the procedure itself.  The reason a C-section will be more than a natural birth is due to the operating room usage, the surgeon and the use of an anesthesiologist.  Also, women who give birth via a C-section also need to stay at the hospital longer, usually three days longer than the average woman who gives a natural birth.

With an insurance policy, it will all depend on co-pays and deductibles.  Since all health insurance policies are different, it is best to call your health insurance company to discuss your benefits as well as what is going to be covered.  On average, those with insurance policies pay anywhere from $350 to $3,500.

Meaghan O’Connel at TheBillFold.com, for example, posted her insurance bill and the total charges were $24,254.

This CNBC article said Los Angeles has the highest C-section costs at $42,530, while the Pittsburgh had the lowest average at $6,891.  The national average, according to the article for a C-section, was $12,232.

What are the extra costs?

Complications, which could prolong the surgery, could increase the costs.

An unstable baby or NICU visit can lead to additional costs for your newborn.

How can I save money?

Consider talking with the hospital beforehand.  Many hospitals are more than happy to set up a payment plan or even offer a discount if you pay in full.  If you offer to pay in full in cash or on a credit card, you could save up to 40 percent, depending on the hospital’s billing department.

If it’s a public hospital and you meet certain income requirements, you may be entitled to certain discounts.

If your doctor is affiliated with more than one hospital, talk with the hospitals ahead of time, especially if you know you’re giving birth via a C-section.  While most hospitals can’t give you an exact estimate, they can do their best to offer a “ballpark” price.

How Much Does a Betta Fish Cost?

Betta fish are a colorful fish that lives in freshwater.  These fish are also known as a “Siamese fighting fish” due to the fact that two Betta fish cannot swim in the same aquarium since males are rather hostile against each other, often resulting in death.  Unlike other fish, a Betta fish generally eats very little and experts recommend that you feed it every other day.  The cost of a Betta fish depends on the type and where you purchase it.

Popular species commonly found at the pet stores include the Veiltail, Elephant Ear Halfmoon, Halfmoon King, Doubletail, Paradise, Crowntail and Halfmoon Plakat.

A Betta fish will always be sold individually, and it is highly recommended that you keep these fish to themselves as you will find that they do not get along with many other species.

Betta fish have a lifespan that varies from 2 to 4 years.

Types of betta fish

Comb Tail

This Betta is produced by crossing the Veil Tail and the Crowntail.  They won’t be as spiky as most, but it will have a pointier appearance.

Crowntail

Known for its spiky tail and fins, these fish can be found at most pet stores due to its uniqueness.

Delta Tail

This is the name for any single tail non-Halfmoon Betta fish.  When the tail has straight caudal edges, but don’t reach 180 degrees, it will be referred to this type of fish.

Double Tail

As you can tell with its name, the tail splits into two equal lobes rather than one.  When both fins flare, it almost creates a single tail.

Feather Tail

Tends to have a ruffled appearance, similar to the Rose mentioned below.

Halfmoon

Known to be very popular, the Halfmoon have a tail shaped just like that — a Halfmoon.

Plakat

Similar to the common Betta, this fish will be more active since they don’t have the elaborate fins to slow them down in the tank.  It also has been said this type has a higher resistance to disease.

Rose Tail

Like the name says, its ruffled fins give it the appearance of a rose petal.

Round Tail

This is a single-tailed Betta that has a round edge and can look very similar to the Halfmoon.  However, when compared to the Halfmoon, the only difference is the “D” shaped caudal.

Spade Tail

These tend to be rather rare, but this fish will have a wider base of the tail and will narrow to a small point, similar to that of a spade.

Super Delta

Similar to the Delta tail mentioned earlier, this tail can extend 160 degrees.

Veil Tail

This is the most common type you will find at a pet store and is known for its tail when it arches up, looking similar to a veil.

What are the extra costs?

A starter kit is highly recommended for a Betta fish.  Due to the size of the box aquarium most stores send you home with, it is ideal to have an aquarium that is closer to one to five gallons; the larger the better.  Starter kits will cost anywhere from $12 to $40 and will commonly come with a filter, tank and the hood. Aside from this aquarium starter kit, it’s also ideal to purchase a filter, substrate, thermometer, plants, a heater and water condition.  Someone on Quora said they paid about $110 to set up their tank, which included live plants, gravel, an air pump, heater and the aquarium kit.

If you’re purchasing the filter separate from the fish tank, plan on spending about $10.  This filter is important because it helps maintain the cleanliness of the water and can keep any deadly disease at bay.

A heater is also important because they need the warm water to thrive, usually 78 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit.  If the tank didn’t have a heater, the fish may develop a disease or even death.  A good heater for a smaller five-gallon tank shouldn’t cost more than $30.

Food should cost no more than $5 per container and should last a few months.  According to betta fish owners, flake food or bloodworms will suffice.

Water conditioner, which can cost about $5, will remove the chlorine and any other toxins that may form in the water.

While optional, these fish tend to enjoy a heating rock, which can cost anywhere from $7 to $20.

Tips to know:

These fish can live upwards of three years and only need a small tank or bowl to survive.  It doesn’t have to be no more than a half gallon and water temperatures should be kept at 78 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit.

It’s best to change the beta fish water at least every week.  If there is a filter present in the fish tank, it’s best to change it every four weeks.

When purchasing a beta fish, make sure that you look for healthier ones.  The healthier fish are going to have a straight spine, no spots and the scales are going to be smoother.

Since these fish are considered low maintenance, it makes for a good fish for beginners.

More than one female can live in a community; however, if doing so, it’s highly recommended they have a good amount of plants to hide in.  Males, on the other hand, should always be kept separate, even from the females because they tend to be aggressive.

How can I save money?

Most of your big box retailers are going to have these fish offered at the same price.  If you want to get a rare Betta that has exotic colors, research a few pet stores in your area to see if they breed them.  Keep in mind that they are rather hard to find due to how rare they are.

Consider looking on Craigslist or even local garage sales to see if anyone is getting rid of their fish tank equipment.  Believe it or not, but this is often a common item found for a bargain price.

How much does a Bengal cat cost?

On average, a Bengal cat can cost anywhere from $800 to more than $4,500 for a show quality cat that has champion parents.  The cost of a Bengal cat is going to depend on the type, quality, age, breeder, as well as where you live.  Breeding show quality Bengal cats can cost $6,000 to more than $8,500 each.  Noted in our table below, we were able to contact a few breeders and inquire about the various colors/patterns found online.  The table shows you what the “average” price may be.

Rising Sun Farm, a reputable Bengal cat breeder located in Minnesota, says a top quality pet can cost $1,000 to $2,000, depending on the coloration and markings, while a top quality breeder can be $3,000 to $4,500.  A silver/snow Bengal cat can cost $1,400 to $2,000, depending on the markings, while a mink quality can be in the $1,200 to $4,500 range.

Prince Royal Bengals note the cost of a Bengal cat will depend on its classification, if you’re buying breeding rights, the age and pedigree.  When all of these factors are considered, the costs for a “pet-quality ” Bengal can be $500 to $1,000.

According to BengalCatsToronto.com, the costs can greatly depend upon the size of the ears, neck, torso, tail, legs, color and patterns.  The costs, when everything is factored in, can be $800 to $3,000.

Type of Bengal CatPrice Average
Black$850 to $1,600
Leopard Print (most common)$800 to $3,500+
Marble$1,400 to $2,800
Silver$1,000 to $2,200
Snow (also referred to as a Seal Lynx Point or Seal Mink)$1,200 to $3,700

What is going to be included in the adoption fee?

Most breeders, before you’re able to bring a cat home, will want a deposit, usually $200 to $500 to secure your cat.  This deposit can be applied to the cat’s total purchase and will be expected once the breeder accepts your contract.  Most Bengal kittens will be able to go home at nine to 13 weeks old.  Breeders will usually wait until the kitten is eating well and is able to use the litter box.

Reputable breeders should include a health check-up report from a licensed vet, a health guarantee, up-to-date shots, registration papers and a travel crate if shipped.  Some breeders may also include the microchipping, an FIV snap blood test, TICA registration if eligible, a starter kit filled with goodies and will spay or neuter the kittens.

What are the extra costs?

Shipping charges via an airline can cost upwards of $250 to $450, depending on the airline and how far the cat has to travel.  If the breeder travels with the cat, which some breeders recommend, the costs can double since you will have to pay for the breeder’s hotel stay and airline ticket.

Some breeders may require you spay or neuter by seven to eight months old.  This will be at your expense and can usually cost about $80 to $150 to have done at a local vet’s office.

Recurring costs have to be thought of such as food, cat litter, accessories, treats, vitamins, medicine and routine/surprise vet visits.  With a healthy cat, plan on budgeting at least $400 to $500 per year.

Tips to know:

Despite the name, this cat isn’t a tiger, nor is it a leopard; instead, it’s considered a domestic cat and won’t need any special licensing if you keep it in the United States.

The coat can come in many colors, ranging from a golden, rusty look to an orangish-sandy look.  The spots, like the coat, can vary in color as well and will come in a rust, cocoa or chocolate brownish color.  Some cats may have a mixture of spot colors, usually bordering the spot color.  The term “rosette,” which you may see from time to time, simply means the cat is a tri-color and the spots will have the outline of a darker color.  The most common colors will be chocolate, cinnamon and charcoal, but you may see brown, silver, blue and snow colors on the market as well.  The black is often referred to as a Melanistic Bengal.

The average Bengal weighs eight to 15 pounds.

These cats tend to be very confident and outgoing, and unlike most other cats, these breeds love to hang around in the water.

If trained properly, these cats can learn how to fetch and can even be walked around the block on a leash if trained properly; however, not all cats enjoy being on a harness and may just sit there.

Unlike other cat breeds, the Bengal cat is known to be very energetic, athletic and smart.  This cat won’t be ideal for those who want a cat that’s quiet and tends to lounge around the house.

The breed was accepted by the International Cat Association in 1991.  It isn’t recognized by the Cat Fanciers Association.

The Bengal cat personality is known to be curious, active and very intelligent.  They demand a lot of interaction, and if left for hours on end, they may get into cabinets or drawers to find items to play with.  They are known to get along with other pets and children, as long as they are trained at a younger age to handle cats carefully.

Bengals are known to be prone to infectious diseases such as feline infectious peritonitis and trichimonas foetus, a disease that can cause diarrhea.

Are Bengal cats hypoallergenic?  Even though they do have dense fur and don’t shed much, they aren’t completely hypoallergenic.  A member on Reddit said the coat is different than that of a domestic cat and it’s considered more a “felt.”  Since everyone is different, the best thing to do is have the breeder come over with the cat for about an hour to see if the allergies kick in.

How can I save money?

While it doesn’t hurt, consider checking out local shelters, such as the Humane Society, or Bengal cat rescue groups to see if they have any cats that resemble a bengal cat or have a retired cat for a fraction of the cost.  They may also have a Bengal mixed kitten available.  Many adult-sized cats can be adopted for less than a few hundred dollars.

Many breeders often have retired Bengal cats for less than $1,500.  These cats are often two to four years old.
