Camping is a perfect example of an outdoor recreational activity.  Campers usually leave urban areas to enjoy nature and wildlife while spending several days and nights outdoors.  A tent is usually associated with camping since this is the most commonly used shelter as it is easy to build and collapse.  The price for camping varies depending on the geographical location, the type of campground, the time of year, the facilities being offered, the number of people and how you’re going to camp.

How much does camping cost?

On average, basic tent camping is going to cost anywhere from $10 to as much as $35 per night.

A premium RV park and resort, which can be the most expensive option, can cost $55 to $85+ per night.

State parks can be one of the cheaper options and can be as little as paying $80 to $225 for an annual pass or as little as $5 to $35 per night, depending on the location and the time of the year.

We took a look at some of the most popular campsites in the United States and were able to get some price ranges.  These prices, along with the campground name, is listed below.

Changin’ Gears says a primitive camping site with no hookups can cost $3 to $10, while water and electric sites can cost $10 to $30.  Full hook-up websites, the website claims, can cost $15 to $50.

Basic camping sites will include a small patch of land that is numbered and sectioned off.  Sites can be on the lake, in the woods or near other campsites, depending on the size of the campground.

Tent sites may often have a small electrical hookup, but most of the time, it will be a basic site with a picnic table and firepit.  RV and travel trailer sites can have much more.  These sites can have shaded awnings, full electric, water and sewer hookups, cable TV, a fire pit and picnic table.  Depending on the RV/trailer size, these spaces can be designed to drive your rig through or in most cases, it will have to be backed in.

RV parks and resorts, designed solely for RV will be the highest in terms of quality when it comes to camping.  These resorts will have cable TV, Internet access, full hook-ups, laundry and nice restroom setups than most campgrounds.

State parks, like a national park, will have the most basic amenities, but some may have electric and the occasional water hookup.  Most state parks will offer a simple restroom facility, along with a fresh water station and RV dump station.

Another common campground option are state fairgrounds.  Many cities will have fairground RV Parking with or without the basic hookups.

Unless it’s a rustic campground, most will have a restroom equipped with showers and toilets.  Some campgrounds may have a small convenience store with basic necessities.

What are the extra costs?

Adding electricity, water and sewer to the site can add $10 to $40 to the site.

How can I save money?

Free camping is available throughout the United States.  Refer to freecampsites.net to see where you can camp for free.  Oftentimes, a Walmart or casino will allow RV owners to camp for free.  Before you do, however, check with management to see if it’s allowed.  Some rest areas may allow it as well as long as there no signs prohibiting it.

If you plan on staying for more than a week, most campgrounds offer weekly, monthly and semi-annual discounts.

Several discounts apply for those who hold AAA, Good Sam Club and AARP cards.  Active and/or retired military may be able to take advantage of discounts as well.  Always ask before booking your campsite.

As mentioned above, some state parks offer annual passes.  Take advantage of this offer if you plan on camping enough to justify the annual cost.  Since some state parks only require a pass to camp, this is a great way to save.

If you’re older than 62 years old, you can purchase an America the Beautiful Passport for $10, which is good for life and offers access to all national parks.

If you camp a lot, consider joining a discount camping club, such as Camp Club USA and Recreation USA, to save even more.

How Much Does Carpet Padding Cost?

Carpet padding, the pad installed under the carpet before it is installed, can come in many types such as a waffle rubber, foam, rebond, slab rubber, fiber and Berber.  Some companies may charge you an additional fee for the carpet padding or may charge you an upgrade fee if you don’t like the padding they throw in for free.

How much are typical carpet padding prices?

Carpet padding, on average, can cost anywhere from $0.25 to as much as $0.80 per square foot.  When the professional installation is factored in, it’s best to budget another $0.50 to $0.75 per square foot.  The cost will depend on the type (see below), the thickness, density, brand and who you purchase the carpet padding from.

Carpet Captain says for budgeting purposes, it’s best to add $1 per square foot for the padding and the installation job.

Lowe’s carpet padding, for example, cost anywhere from $0.50 to $1.10 per square foot.  Menard’s, on the other hand, has over 30 options and the prices range anywhere from $0.25 to $0.79 per square foot.

Carpet padding overview

This padding will have various thicknesses and densities, and this will vary from one manufacturer to another.  For most residential carpets, 7/16-inches will be the most common choice.  As for the density, it can be as low as three pounds to as high as 10; however, six, seven and eight tend to be the most common choice in a residential setting, while three to five pounds could be found in apartments since it’s cheaper and has to be replaced more often.

Carpet padding usually comes in 150 to 200 square foot rolls.  It will be wrapped as well as rolled to make for easy transportation and delivery.

Types of carpet padding:

Foam

Also known as urethane, this type of pad will be the most inexpensive type on the market and will be very light in weight.  If the store is going to offer you a free option, this is usually the type they are going to give you.  This type of padding will be cheap and won’t be able to tolerate much in terms of traffic.  After a few years, it can start to feel flat and won’t last longer than three to five years.

Prime Urethane Foam

This padding won’t be made of recycled material like a rebond padding; instead, it will be made from a very dense polyurethane.  While it’s designed for a commercial setting, it can be installed in a residential setting due to its durability.

Rebond

This pad will be the most common type, usually found in a residential setting.  It will be made from recycled urethane foam and will have multiple colors.  This padding will be available everywhere and can come in virtually every thickness size available.  The most common density found in the home will be six to 10 pounds.

Specialized

A specialized carpet padding will claim it can eliminate odors or prevent pet accidents.  While these pads can make this “claim,” don’t expect them to follow through as most of these pads haven’t been proven to stop moisture from protecting you from mildew and mold.  Some names you will hear in the “specialized” category will include moisture barrier, odor eating, memory foam and air filtering.

Waffle Rubber

Waffle padding, often referred to as rubber pad, will be an economical choice for those who want to install carpet over a concrete floor.  Introduced in the early 70s, this padding has flexible rubber sheets and a “waffle” pattern on the top.  Waffle padding will be rated in ounces instead of pounds.

Wool or Fiber

Natural wool pads will be used primarily for either commercial or Berber carpet.  This padding is dense and can breathe a lot easier when compared to other types, and because this, it will lose that typical spongy feel most padding will have.  This padding, when installed with Berber carpet, will be designed to support and allow it to wear well with all sorts of traffic.

Tips to know

When purchasing a carpet, always make sure the grade matches the padding.  If you’re going to purchase the carpet that can last you 10 years, then you will want to have a padding that can last you 10 years as well.

While thick carpet padding may sound ideal, it can actually backfire if it’s too thick.  Thicker carpet padding can cause wrinkles in your new carpet and it’s advised you don’t choose anything thicker than 7/16 inches.

Call the carpet company or refer to your warranty’s terms and conditions to make sure you’re purchasing the right thickness.  If you fail to buy the correct padding requirements, you risk voiding your carpet’s warranty.

How can I save money?

Many stores offer free padding with carpet purchases.  Consult with the retailer to see if they have any offers that are available you can take advantage of.

Even if the carpet company doesn’t offer any type of padding, many will be able to include the padding with the purchase if haggling is done.  What most people don’t know is that if you haggle with the price, most retailers will be more than happy to offer some sort of padding for free.

How Much Does a Camshaft Cost?

Depending on the car you drive, it can either have one or two camshafts.  As an integral part of your engine’s mechanical design, this part will be located on either top or the side of the engine, on top of the cylinders.  Vehicle owners will know their camshaft is going bad when they either hear a ticking sound coming from the engine or a grinding noise that doesn’t right.  The most common reason a camshaft will go bad will be either due to a lack of lubrication or it’s a faulty part.

How much does a camshaft cost?

The price of a camshaft will depend on the car you’re driving and the auto repair shop you take it to.  To replace a camshaft in most vehicles with an overhead cam, the cost will be about $700 to $1,300.  Parts, depending on the make and model of the vehicle, can be in the $150 to $300 range.   Foreign camshafts tend to be 2 to 3 times more than an American branded camshaft.

For example, a Honda RSX camshaft can cost anywhere from $325 to $400, while a camshaft for a 2006 Acura, can cost anywhere from $625 to $700.

Toyota says the average part for its vehicles can be anywhere from $110 and $287.

Custom camshafts, which are used to replace stock camshafts so that they can be fitted into high compression for racing engines and chassis, can cost $200 to $578 just for the parts.

High-performance cars can see prices with labor getting close to the $1,500 to $2,000 range.  For example, one forum member on camaro5.com said was quoted $2,300 for a new camshaft in New York City.

10w40.com says to replace a camshaft, the charge will be around $800 on most vehicles that have an overhead cam.

A forum member on lxforums.com was quoted $1,100 at a local mechanic and most said that was a fair price.

Camshaft overview

The camshaft will be made of a thick steel rod which is either milled or attached.  As the shaft turns, the cams will press down on the valves in alternate intervals, according to the engine’s timing.

While the shafts are easy to get to, it’s the disassembly process that can be intensive.  This process will involve taking apart the engine’s timing components such as the belts and the pulleys.  The average repair takes five to more than 12 hours to complete.

A warranty, which is provided by the manufacturer, should be included with the part.

What are the extra costs?

Additional costs will be for the other engine parts that will support the camshaft and engine.  A camshaft position sensor, which may be needed or replaced, can can cost $100 to $350 for the part.

How can I save money?

If the car is new, see if it is still covered under the manufacturer’s warranty.  If it’s covered under warranty and the part is faulty, it may be covered.

How Much Does Calcium Chloride Cost?

Calcium Chloride (CaCl2) is the salt of calcium and chlorine.  This chemical compound often includes brine and is used for refrigerating plants; ice and dust control on roads; and desiccation.  Calcium chloride is hygroscopic in nature and should be kept in tightly sealed airtight containers.

As a desiccant, calcium chloride is used to absorb moisture mainly on the road since it is thrown on the road which makes it hold the dust down.  It will constantly draw moisture, keeping paved roads damp and the dust down.  It’s also known to resist evaporation.

How much does calcium chloride cost?

A pallet of calcium chloride can cost anywhere from $550 to $650, while a single bag can run anywhere from $12 to $25.  Ice melter that is designed to melt the snow and ice in the winter months can cost $10 to $18 per 5 to a 10-pound container.

Calcium chloride used in the food industry is usually sold in a bottle.  Food grade calcium chloride is water soluble and is used in food preparation, such as in the process to obtain firmness of certain vegetables.  A 500g bottle can cost anywhere between $6 and $24.  For instance, at Flinn Scientific, a 500 g lab grade bottle retails for about $6.

Calcium chloride is also sold in a pellet form, which is stored in buckets.  This type can cost $30 to $55 per 50-pound bucket.  For example, the PELADOW brand sells a 50-pound bucket for $30 to $40.  The chloride that commonly comes in pellet form can be a great solution for icy driveways as well as melting snow.

The price of calves depends on the seller, the quality, age, health, breed, geographical location and market conditions.  By the pound, which is the way most farmers charge, plan on spending $0.20 to as much as $1.50 per pound.  Some hard-to-find breeds can be as much as $3.50+ per pound.  With the average calf weighing about 30 to 50 pounds, this will put the average calf in the $37 to $75 range for one that’s younger than a few weeks old.  As they grow older, the prices will go up.

The jersey bull calf, about one week old, can cost anywhere from $20 to $70 each, while a Guernsey bull calf, three to five weeks old, can cost anywhere from $30 to $100.  A baby Holstein calf can cost $50 to $130, on average.

According to this DairyForums.com thread, a forum member had stated that a Holstein Bull Calf cost anywhere from $125 to $175, while a day old calf could be less than $80.  This was in the state of Florida.

One member on CattleToday.com said he paid about $25 to $100 for a few day old calf at a barn or $100 to $125 for holsteins and jerseys.

Be sure to check around the local area as many auctions can have different buyers.  At these auctions, consider connecting with the farmers directly.  By purchasing the calves for a fair price direct can save upwards of 20% since the farmers won’t have to pay the auction fees on their animals.

How Much Does a Pap Smear Cost?

A pap smear test, sometimes referred to as a pap test, is a screening test used to check for pre-cancerous cell changes in the cervix.  This test is recommended every three years for women who are either older than 21 or shortly after their first intercourse session.

How much does a pap smear cost?

A pap smear can cost anywhere from $80 to $200 without insurance. However, if you do have an insurance policy, it will be covered 100 percent of the time since it’s considered a preventative test.  VeryWell.com notes these test will be covered by most insurance policies and there won’t be any out-of-pocket costs.  This is one of the very few preventative services that are performed without a co-pay.

Following conducting a pelvic exam, the doctor will use a scraper or a smaller sized brush to collect a small sample of cervical cells.  These cells will be deposited on a slide and then sent off to a lab for further analysis.  This is a simple and quick test and lab results will be available in two to three weeks.

The test will check for any abnormal cell changes in the cervix, which is the lower part of the uterus.  If these cell changes are left untreated, it can lead to cervical cancer, potentially saving your life.  If caught early enough, the chance of successful treatment for cancer will be relatively high.

What are the extra costs?

Some doctor’s offices will bill the lab fee separately and this bill will come at a later date.

While rare, less than 25 percent of pap smears may show some abnormal results.  If this were the scenario, the doctor may want to run a series of tests or set up an appointment for the future.  These tests could include a biopsy if cancer is suspected or additional testing such as HPV testing for the human papillomavirus.  Having an abnormal pap test won’t mean you necessarily have cervical cancer.

The test can oftentimes show something that isn’t normal, but it can go away over time.  However, to make certain of this, most doctors will recommend another test and/or a future follow-up visit, which can be equivalent to a doctor’s office fee.

Tips to know:

Leading women authorities recommend women start getting these tests routinely, at least every three years, after they turn 21.  At 30, the American Cancer Society says as long as you test for HPV at the same time, you will only need the test every five years.

While some women need these tests more frequently, it should be performed at least every three years.  Women should continue to receive these tests until they turn 65 years old.  As long as women over 65 don’t have any abnormal pap smears within the last 10 years, they will be able to discontinue the tests.  This decision must always be made by the primary physician.

Women who are at a higher risk fo rcervical cancer may be given more pap smears based on their health status.

The test can be uncomfortable and may cause slight bleeding.

Doctors suggest making an appointment 10 to 20 days after the first day of your period.

How can I save money?

There are local Planned Parenthood offices available nationwide and can offer low-cost or free options for those who have a lower income.  The organization will charge based on a sliding income scale.  Local country health departments may offer the test for a discount as well.

Those who are at or below the 250 percent poverty level, you may be able to qualify for the CDC’s National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program.

If you have insurance, it’s more than likely going to be covered 100 percent as long as the doctor is in network.  Most insurance companies will cover this test once per year, but to be certain, talk with your insurance provider to see what your policy includes.

Some doctor offices may have a cash discount for those who don’t have an insurance plan.

If you don’t have insurance, call a few doctor’s offices to see what they charge.  Any reputable office should be able to offer a “ballpark” quote over the phone for just the test.

This test may be covered by Medicaid or Medicare.

College students can check with their school to see if any discounted health services are available.

How Much Does a Papaya Cost?

The Papaya is a fruit that comes from the Carica papaya, which is native to the tropics of the Americas and was first cultivated in Mexico.  In the states, it only grows in Hawaii.  The tree grows rapidly, bearing fruit within three years.  Papayas are very versatile and can be used as a food, cooking aid, and even medicine.  It can also be eaten raw without the seeds.

At a local grocery store, fresh papayas can range anywhere from $2 to $10 each or close to $1 to $2 per pound depending on the time of the season, the size and the grocery store selling it.  Because of its short shelf life, the geographical proximity can affect the pricing quite a bit.  Depending on the type purchased, the average papaya can weigh as much as 10 pounds.

Dried papaya can cost closer to $4 to $7 per pound, depending on the brand and where it’s purchased.

Papaya seeds are also available for planting.  These seeds are sold in packs of 10 and can cost $1 to $3 per pack.

The cost of a papillon puppy will depend on its quality, age, the breeder, geographical location, its registration, and its history.  A papillon puppy, on average, can cost anywhere from $375 to more than $1,500.  If purchasing from a reputable breeder, who includes all of the necessary paperwork, then you should be prepared to spend $750 to as much as $2,000 or more.  Unplanned breeding or litters with a poor bloodline could cost closer to $500 to $1,100.  Rescue groups could cost less than $400 if the dog is older than two years old.

Carfax, Inc. is a web service that supplies consumers a vehicle history report that provides information on the car such as accidents, the owners who have owned the car, flood damage, if it was a lemon, and more.

Most, if not all potential car buyers, use a Carfax report when purchasing a used car.  Not only does it give the potential buyer an idea of what has happened to the car in the past, it gives the buyer a peace of mind.

How much does a Carfax report cost?

According to Carfax.com, one Carfax report can be purchased for $39.99 and five reports can cost $59.99.  For $69.99, you can get unlimited reports for 60 days.  Usually, this report will only need to be purchased if you’re purchasing from a private seller who doesn’t want to buy one for you.

As for dealers, they have reported paying anywhere from as little as $900 to more than $1,500 per month for unlimited reports.  This cost would depend on the number of cars in the inventory.

Carfax overview

For any car built after 1981, Carfax will be able to supply a detailed repair and damage history.  This report will list a number of things about the car’s history that’s associated with the vehicle identification number, commonly referred to as VIN.

Carfax will do a better job show you how many owners it has had in the past.  This can allow you to dig deep and see where the car has been such as dealership or pawn shop.

Most dealerships offer the report for free.  On websites, such as Cars.com and AutoTrader.com, dealers will include a Carfax report for that particular car.  Simply click the link and you will be able to the report at no charge.  If the report isn’t available for the car, ask the dealer if they can offer it and more will be happy to do so.
