How Much Does the CEH Certification Cost?

The CEH, known as the Certified Ethical Hacker certification, comes from the EC-Council, and is a type of professional certification provided by the International Council of eCommerce Consultants.

As the name implies, an ethical hacker works using the same methods as a hacker, but their purpose is to find and fix computer security vulnerabilities in a lawful manner.  A certified ethical hacker has obtained the appropriate certification to look for weaknesses in a network through methods used by hackers.

The price for a CEH certification depends on the institution that provides it, but the price is fairly close among all organizations.

How much does the CEH certification cost?

On average, the CEH is going to cost about $50 to become certified.  If you’re a self-study student, you will have to pay another $100 for the eligibility application fee, and along with this, you must also prove two years of information security related work that needs to be endorsed by your current employer.  Test takers unable to prove their work history may be able to substitute it with a relevant educational background.  All cases will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.  This cost can be much higher, often $1,000 to $3,000 more, if you choose an approved training class that lasts five days.  This cost is standard across the world, whether it’s taken in India or the United States.

The website GoCertify.com confirms the price for the CEH certification is about $500.  However, it also states that there are continuing requirements that need to be taken to keep your certification active.

TomsItPro.com says the test is $500 at an EC-Council testing center of $600 at a Pearson VUE testing center.  As noted in our first point, if you were to self-study, you will have to pay an additional $100 if you were to qualify.

CEH overview

All exams will have to be taken at a Prometric or VUE testing center.

The multiple choice exam has 125 questions with a four-hour time limit, and in order to pass, you must score a 70 percent or higher.  The exam is referred to as ID 312-50.

What are the extra costs?

While optional, but highly recommended, tutoring, as well as study materials, to help pass the exam can cost anywhere from $10 to $90 per study guide, depending on the type of book you purchase.  The CEH v9 book, for example, retails for about $40.  Prices for the training courses can be much higher, costing about $3,000 for an instructor-led course or half that if you were to self-study with the approved course materials.  Most tutors, depending on their experience, will charge $35 to $75 per hour.  A five-day CEH training course is highly recommended, and at the end of the course, the exam will be presented.

You should factor in travel expenses if the training center is more than 100 miles away from your home.

Due to technology constantly changing, in order to keep your certification active, each member must take 120 credits within three years of passing the exam and clock at least 20 credits per year.

How can I save money?

If you choosing a training course, be sure to review and compare at least three to online schools.  With one simple search, you will quickly find there’s a plethora of schooling options available, all at varying costs.  Be sure to ask yourself:  Do you want to learn on your own, or do you need an instructor?  Don’t base the training on the costs, however.  Be sure to weigh all angles:  the instructors, the reputation of the school and if it’s approved by the CEH.

Tom’s IT Pro, the website we mentioned earlier, claimed you can skip the CEH training, which can save you thousands, and if done right, you can have all your training, along with the exam costs, done for as little as $800.  This method is only advisable to those who are able to work with a self-paced study program.  The website even notes there’s no shortage of free training options if you want to bypass the paid options altogether.

How Much Does Decomposed Granite Cost?

Decomposed granite is a type of granite rock that has aged and is then fractured into smaller pieces or small chunks of weak rock.  Decomposed granite, in its crushed form, is often used for pavement and building material, but unlike granite, don’t confuse the two, because the two won’t be the same material since decomposed granite tends to have sharper edges and shapes.  This material is often used for driveways, gardens, trails and urban parks.

The price of decomposed granite depends on the quality of the rock, the amount of rock that will be purchased and the company selling it.

How much does decomposed granite cost?

On average, decomposed granite, one inch in depth, can cost anywhere from $1 to $3.50 per square foot or about $3 to $6 per cubic yard.   These prices, most of the time, should include the delivery and distribution, but it won’t include the installation price.  Usually, the most common and affordable type of decomposed granite comes in a gray color; however, it can come in close to 30 other color shades.

If you were to hire professionals, the costs of the job would greatly depend on what needs to be done.  Most of the time, professional landscapers will charge anywhere from $55 to $80 per hour to lay decomposed granite for you, so to budget properly, plan on either paying by the hour or spending at least $4 to $7 per square foot for something such as a walkway or driveway if the contractor chooses to quote by the square footage.

According to HomeAdvisor.com, the average 400 square foot driveway would cost about $100 to $300 for the materials alone; however, the website notes this material isn’t recommended for those who live in an area prone to a lot of rain since it can be washed away.




Types of decomposed granite

Natural

Natural decomposed granite will often be used for mulch around plants and trees as it provides essential nutrients to the soil and lasts much longer than mulch.

Stabilized

Stabilized decomposed granite will often be added on top of another type of gravel and then be added again a loose layer.

Resin

A resin will resemble asphalt but will have a look that’s more natural.

Laying down landscaping fabric underneath the decomposed granite, if being used for a pathway, is recommended so weeds and grass don’t come up.

This type of granite will pack well, allowing less water to drain through its system.  This granite is ideal for walkways, as mulch, or even a paver walk.

Common uses for decomposed granite includes a walkway, driveway, ground cover, mulching material, a makeshift patio, as a weed controller or as an underlayment for a fire pit.

Installing this granite too close to the home may cause it to stick to shoes, which in turn, can scratch floors.

The advantages

When compared to other material for walkways, it can often be one of the more inexpensive options.

Regardless of what you’re using it for, it will require very little maintenance, with the exception of filling bare spots that may have washed away.

Weeds will be kept to a minimum when compared to other areas such as grass and mulch.

Due to the sharp edges on the stone, it won’t be possible to walk barefoot on the path.

How Much Does Deleading a House Cost?

De-leading a house is a procedure performed to remove lead-based paint in a house.  Although you may not be aware of any lead in your home, older houses, if built before 1978, most likely have lead-based paint underneath fresher coats of paint.

The cost of de-leading a home will depend on the size of the house, the method being used, the company performing the procedure and the complexity of the project.

How much does deleading a house cost?

Before lead is even removed inside a home, it will first have to be confirmed.  On average, a simple DIY testing kit can cost anywhere from $20 to $65 per kit.  These kits will simply need a paint chip and it will be sent off a laboratory for analysis.

On average, plan on spending anywhere from $8 to $17 per square foot to delead a home.

A cheaper option — encapsulation — can be much cheaper at about $0.50 to $0.75 per square foot but won’t be as effective as removing the lead down to the surface since a liquid coat will be used to trap the lead.

According to the EPA, licensed lead-based paint removal can cost about $8 to $15 per square foot or close to $10,000 to $30,000 for a 1,000 to 2,000 square foot home.

According to the website MABuyerBroker.com, the price for de-leading a house can cost anywhere from $15,000 to $25,000 depending on how big the property is.  For example, a homeowner in Vermont had a three-story home that cost $13,000 to de-lead the entire home.

LeadInspection.com states that de-leading a home can cost anywhere between $2,500 and $15,000, depending on the size of the property.

According to Redfin.com, a site that specializes in real estate, a visitor had asked what it would cost in order to de-lead a home that was more than 2,000 square feet.  Based on the answers given there, the cost of de-leading the home would be anywhere from $25,000 to as much as $35,000.

Lead paint will often be removed by what’s known as encapsulation.  During this process, a specially-made paint coating will be painted on the lead surface.  This paint will then create a watertight bond that’s able to seal the lead paint, but as House Logic states, this coating can wear off over time, especially near doors and windows.  Another method, known as enclosing, will involve covering the older surface with a new drywall or windowsills.  As long as these items aren’t removed, the lead won’t be exposed.  Lastly, the most expensive method will be removing everything.  This labor-intensive process, most of the time, will involve using an electrical sander equipped with an HEPA-filtered vacuum.  With this sander, the paint will be stripped.  Another method contractors use is with a heat gun, which involves a heat gun and hand scraper to remove the paint.

Since lead can’t be detected by the naked eye, an official inspector may be required to confirm the lead inside the home.  If this were the case, most inspectors can charge anywhere from $300 to $550, depending on where you live.

Additional cost will involve repainting the house after the de-leading has been completed.  Repairs may be required as well if any damage has been done.

Lead paint can commonly soak into outside siding as well as trim and floorboards.  If tests show that lead is present in these parts of the home, all will have to be replaced.

Fixr.com says close to 75 percent of homes in the United States have some sort of lead paint remaining within the exterior.

Even if your home has lead paint, as long as no one under six years old lives or visits there and there’s no sign of damage and/or chipping,  you may safely leave the lead paint intact. However, when it comes time to sell the home, you will have to disclose that lead paint is inside the home.

Government agencies provide loans and/or tax credits for people who would like to delead their house.  This will allow you to pay installments for the procedure rather than having to pay for the whole thing up front.  As mentioned above, check with these programs as many are more than willing to offer assistance.  For example, in Massachusetts, homeowners who receive a “Letter of Full Compliance” will be eligible for a state tax credit equal to the deleading expense.

While it’s not considered a permanent fix, encapsulation tends to be the cheapest method, often costing less than $0.75 per square foot.  The only downside, however, is that it can damage or wear away over time, bringing the problem back again.

The cost of a headstone will depend on the type you want, where you purchase, the material it’s made from and the design.  Most headstones, on average, can be as little as $150 for a simple, flat headstone to as much as $8,000 for something more advanced such as a larger headstone shaped like a heart.

A German Shepherd, also known as an Alsatian, is a larger sized dog breed that originated from Germany, weighing up to 100 pounds.  The German Shepherd is known for herding sheep as well as guarding them.  Close to 5% of these breeds are actively registered with the American Kennel Club.

How much does a German Sheperd cost?

On average, a puppy can cost anywhere from as little as $350 to as much as $4,500 for an AKC bred puppy.  The costs will all come down to the quality, age, the breeder, where you live and the parent’s history.

Rescue dogs, for example, will be the cheapest, usually costing $75 to $500.  While puppies can be found here, most of the time, the dogs will be older and will be rehabilitated to go to a new home. For example, the BrightStar German Shepard rescue group charges $325 for all dogs, including the puppies.

With no paperwork, a German Shepard should cost about $300 to $900 from a breeder, who, at a minimum, includes the vaccinations, deworming and other fees.

If the dog is considered a working line and has a fantastic bloodline, these puppies can be anywhere from $1,000 to more than a few thousand.  If already fully trained, the costs can easily surpass the $10,000 price tag.

Lastly, dogs for show will tend to be the most expensive as they will be AKC certified and will adhere to the breed standard.  These dogs can cost anywhere from $2,500 to more than $5,000, depending on the pedigree, its history, the parents and bloodline.  Adults that have been trained and have hip certifications can easily cost $10,000 or more.

A white German shepherd, which is referred to as an Alsatian, is a mutation of the regular German shepherd, so why it isn’t technically this breed, people still search for the white color.  These dogs are known for their cream-color coat and resemble that of a shepherd.  The costs, according to Cuteness.com, is about $750 to $1,000.  A white-colored German shepherd can’t be registered with the AKC.

Another type often searched for — the panda German shepherd — can cost close to $1,000, but like the white/albino, this is yet another dog that isn’t considered a true German shepherd.  It is 35 percent white and came into existence due to a gene mutation.

American / Canadian Lines

This line today dominates the national kennel clubs and will conform strictly to each governing kennel club.  Popular in North America and Canada.

Czech Working Lines

Originated from Czechoslovakia, this line was commonly used for border patrol work.  This bloodline revolved around the Czechoslovakia Army and tend to have a high working drive and tend to be very agile.

DDR / East German Working Lines

Developed after World War II from the remaining war dogs, this breed was originally maintained by the East German government.  This dog has a distinct look:  a larger head and bone structure, as well as a correct working structure.  These bloodlines are also known for being very sound.

West German Show Lines

This is the most popular type of GSD in Germany and is bred to conform to the SV standard, which requires the dog to gain health clearance for the hips, elbows and a working title.  The look will be very specific and will typically be uniform, most commonly in the black and red saddle back.

West German Working Lines

These dogs will have working blood and are said to be the closest of all German shepherd breeds to be produced under Max von Stephanitz.  These dogs excel in many sports, real working jobs and positions of service.

The TDaP vaccine is a combination of vaccines which are used to prevent three types of illnesses:  tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis.  This vaccine was recently approved for use and has now been included in the normal vaccine schedule for adolescents.

How much does the TDaP vaccine cost?

On average, the price of a TDaP vaccine can cost anywhere from $30 to $90 per dose.  A physician’s office is going to cost more on average compared to a walk-in clinic since you will have to pay an office visit fee.  We called a few retailers in our area to see what they would charge for this vaccination, and our results are listed below.  Keep in mind this cost can vary from one location to another.

If you have health insurance, many have claimed their insurance covered the entire vaccination, but again, it will be solely dependent upon your policy’s restrictions.  Check with your health insurance provider to see what may or may not be covered.  Even if not covered 100 percent, the average person with insurance paid about $25 to $45.

For example, the MinuteClinic.com shows that the price for the TDaP vaccine can be about $65. The price mentioned is per dose and it can be administered to adolescents ages 11 and up.

Another popular pharmacy such as Walgreen’s Take Care Clinics charges around $65 for the vaccination.

According to the official site of the Center for Disease Control, the price for the administration of TDaP vaccine normally ranges anywhere from $30 to $39.

Before we get into the pricing, you first have to understand there will be three parts to the process:  inspecting the property, preparing the property and treating the property.

If you plan on hiring a professional, the first they will want to do is come to your home and assess the damage.  During this session, they won’t treat the bed bugs, but instead, they will verify you do have bed bugs and will determine a plan of action.  Most companies will charge about $50 to $280 for this inspection visit; however, some may apply this fee to a future treatment session if you decide to use their services.

This price will be higher if you decide to use a dog that’s capable of sniffing bed bugs out.  These dogs have up to a 96 percent accuracy rate, and if the company uses one, they may charge anywhere from $300 to more than $700 for the confirmation only.  This price can be much higher if the dog is needed in a larger building such as a hotel or nursing home.  Most services won’t offer this option, but it doesn’t hurt to ask.

Once bed bugs are confirmed in your home, the extermination company will want to start some sort of treatment plan.  Most companies will want to charge by the room, but some may charge by the job, especially if the entire home has to be treated.  On average, plan on spending close to $300 to $1,000 per room, depending on the size, the method they use, the company you use and the degree of the infestation.  Most infestations will require follow-up visits and some companies may charge an additional fee, whereas others will include this in their total quote.  When everything is said and done, don’t be surprised if the total treatment costs you $1,000 to $6,500 or more.  Refer to our table below to see what most companies will charge on average.

What is going to be included?

If you choose to hire a professional, a professional exterminator will come to your home and assess the damage.  He or she will be able to pinpoint the exact problem as well as recommend what solutions can be provided.   During this session, they are going to check the furniture, rugs and surrounding areas for any sign of infestation.  This could include looking for molted shells, fecal material, eggs or living/dead bugs.  If a dog is brought to the inspection, the dog can simply sniff the area for confirmation, similar to that of a drug-sniffing dog.

Treatment options

Pest control companies use a variety of ways to get rid of bed bugs, which includes fumigation, heat treatments, pesticide application or via a steam treatment.

Heat treatment

Spray pesticide

If the company doesn’t use this type of method, then there’s a good chance they will use some sort of spray pesticide and will apply it like they would any other pests inside the home.   This chemical may also be intertwined with these other methods as well, depending on the company you’re using.  With this method, powders will be left in open spaces, while a liquid-form wil be left inside the cracks.  Upon contact, the bug is killed.

Structural fumigation

Another method — structural fumigation — is used, but it isn’t as common as the two mentioned prior.  With this method, a company will tarp your home, releasing gas known as vikane gas to permeate every inch of the home.  If you choose the fumigation or the heat treatment method, you will have to leave the home for a few days until everything is back to normal.  This method, out of all the methods mentioned, has a 99 percent success rate and can kill more than just bed bugs; it can also destroy ants, termites and other pets.

Steam

Lastly, a steam treatment will be similar to the heat treatment.  During this process, a technician will use a steam cleaner to eradicate the infestation.  These cleaners will have a high heat setting and with every swipe, it will be able to clean mattresses, couches and other types of fabrics.

What are the extra costs?

In some extreme cases, you may have to destroy some furniture to play it safe such as headboards, couches or even bed sheets.  For example, since bed bugs are known to hide inside fabric material, a professional will highly advise you throw away any fabric or rinse in hot water to play it safe.  Furniture, depending on the material it’s made from, will either have to be disposed of or steamed cleaned to make sure all of the bed bugs are gone.

Tips to know:

Most people will know they have a bed bug bite when they see a bite mark on their skin, usually dark brown or reddish in color.  However, keep in mind close to 30 percent of people out there don’t react to bed bugs.

START EARLY!  If you ever spot a bed bug, call right away.  If you let this infestation grow, it can cause a lot of problems and make the bill even higher.

Bed bugs prefer dark and warmer places such as the crannies of your mattress or the edging of the wall.

You can freeze bed bugs; however, the temperature will have to be less than zero degrees for more than four consecutive days.  Because of this length and temperature, pest control companies won’t use this method.

To prepare your home for extermination, you will have to remove anything you want to have dry cleaned such as a mattress, linens and furniture.  Once washed, it’s important to seal in an airtight bag.  You will also be asked to move objects away from the perimeter and remove anything from a wooden object since bed bugs often seek refuge in wood cracks and corners.

Bed frame overview
