How Much Does Dog Teeth Cleaning Cost?

A dog’s oral hygiene and dental care are just as important as they are to humans.  Periodontal disease has been linked to many other health issues such as heart and kidney failure.  To prevent the build-up of plaque on the teeth and gums, regular brushing is necessary.  You could choose to use a daily dog toothpaste, such as Petco Natural, or a weekly cleaning product like Oravet.

If proper oral care is not used, your dog will need to have its teeth cleaned at a veterinary office, and unfortunately, this can be quite costly as the dog must be put under an anesthetic.  This can cost even more if the damage is so extensive that some teeth have to be pulled.

How much does dog teeth cleaning cost?

The cost of a cleaning for your dog’s teeth will vary greatly from one veterinarian to another.  Costs for this procedure have ranged anywhere from as low as $85 for a basic cleaning to $600 for a cleaning and one tooth extraction.  If a cleaning, surgery, and x-rays are necessary, the costs can be as high as $3,000.  The factors that affect the cost include the vet’s office, the dog’s size and geographical location.  Most basic cleanings will be within the $150 to $300 range.

Some practices will charge a flat rate while others will others will charge by the hour.

The cost of oral at-home treatment, such as regular dog toothpaste or a vet, will cost $30 to $60 per year.

According to PetMD.com, the cost of a dog teeth cleaning will depend on a slew of factors.  These factors will include the geographical location and what’s involved.  A simple cleaning can cost you a few hundred dollars, while having oral surgery, if necessary, can cost upwards of a $1,000+.  One of the biggest costs, the website notes, is anesthesia and the x-rays.

Jessica Rhae at youdidwhatwithyourweiner.com checked out a few prices in her local area.  One clinic gave her an estimate of $190 with post-dental medication, while another had quotes in the $79 to $109 range.

Dog teeth cleaning overview

Most veterinary offices will first examine the dog to determine if he or she needs the cleaning.  They will also determine if the dog is healthy enough for a general anesthesia.

Once the dog is put under the anesthetic, the vet will examine the teeth to see if any periodontal disease is present.

The dog’s teeth will be cleaned above and below the gum line using an ultrasonic sealer – a tool that vibrates at high speeds.  This tool is designed to remove any large pieces of tartar or plaque.

The dog’s teeth will be polished and rinsed with fluoride once the brushing process is done.

For more information on what teeth cleaning involves, read the twelve steps of professional teeth cleaning.

During the procedure, the dog will be sedated.  Once the dog has been sedated, the vet will do an initial exam to see what kind of work needs to be done.  There will be times when an additional work has to be done on top of the cleaning.  Using an ultrasonic scaling tool, the dog teeth cleaning process is very similar to a human cleaning.

The entire process will take about 45 minutes to an hour.  If the vet has to extract a tooth, it can take up to 30 minutes.

What are the extra costs?

If your dog has any damaged teeth that need to be removed, there will be an extra cost.  This cost is usually about $30-$60 per tooth.

If there is any periodontal disease present, your dog will need antibiotics to help kill it.  These antibiotics can cost anywhere between $30-$80.

Blood work may be recommended by the vet, and this can run about $100, depending on the pet’s age.

After the procedure is done, the dog will be sent home with some medication, which can cost around $10 to $30.

Surgery, as noted above, will be on a case by case basis.  Depending on the dog’s age and health, these costs could be as little as $400 to more than $2,000.

Tips to know:

Dogs will start out with 28 baby teeth, also known as deciduous teeth.  By six months, a dog should have all of their adult teeth, and a vet will recommend a dog comes in once all of its adult teeth have come in completely.

Most dogs won’t sit still during this type of process, and because of this, a vet may recommend a general anesthesia.

Try your best to brush your dog’s teeth at least twice a week.  This will help prevent plaque build-up.  Also, consider raw bones or toys that are designed to help prevent tartar build-up.

Bad breath is the first indicator that you should bring your dog in for a checkup.  Also be on the lookout for excessive drooling, misaligned teeth, discolored teeth or yellowish-brown tartar along the gum line.

After a cleaning, dogs can usually start eating 12 hours after it was done.  However, if the dog went through a surgery, it could take up to five days for the dog to fully recover.

Breeds, such as Yorkies and Chihuahuas, have the most dental-related problems.

If you’re worried about anesthesia and are looking for non-anesthesia dog teeth cleaning options, be forewarned that while you may be able to vet who will do it without any medication, it can be perceived as a risk, according to Wellpets.com.

How to brush your dog’s teeth

The first two things you will want to do is purchase a toothbrush made for a dog along with toothpaste.  Caesarsway.com notes you should look for a brush that brushes at a 45-degree angle and is able to brush below the gumline.

At first, your dog may not enjoy having a toothbrush jabbed in its mouth, and that’s okay because it’s pretty common.  To make it a pleasant experience, try to pick out a time when your dog doesn’t have a lot of energy such as after a walk or at night.

Start the process slowly and brush your dog’s teeth as you would your own.  If your dog feels agitated at first, don’t overdo it, but instead, try to introduce your dog to the process.  As the days go on, your dog should become more comfortable with the procedure.

Never use human toothpaste because it will contain fluoride, which is extremely poisonous to dogs.

How can I save money?

The best way to save money is to avoid a dental cleaning altogether by proper dental upkeep.  There are various resources online that can assist with cleaning your dog’s teeth.  The more you do it, the more comfortable your dog will be with the entire process.

Some veterinary offices will offer discounts to those who are able to pay cash.

How Much Does a Cell Phone Plan Cost?

In order to choose a cell phone plan that is right for you, you need to answer a few basic questions.  First, what company do you want to use?  Choose one that provides the best service in your area for the lowest price.  To check the signal strength of different companies, go to cellreception.com.  If you live in a well populated area, chances are there will be many companies that provide good coverage in your area.  The next thing you want to consider is how much you are willing to spend.  Cell phone plans can cost anywhere from $30 a month to $150 a month depending on the features included.  Finally, decide what features you need to be included and which ones would just be a bonus.  Some of these features include mobile-to-mobile, text messaging, and 3g service.  You also need to consider what type of phone you want, such as a touch screen, flip phone, or one with a qwerty keyboard.

How much does the average cellphone plan cost?

Most cell phone companies offer a plan that includes unlimited talk, text and data for one line.  This can range anywhere from as little as $45 to $100+ per month, depending on the service provider you choose.  Refer to the table below for price estimates from popular carriers that offer the lowest costs as of 2016.

CarrierMonthly Price
AT&T$55 per month for unlimited talk, text and 2GB of data
Boost Mobile$50
Cricket Wireless$65 with auto-pay
Sprint$100 for two lines
Straight Talk$45
T-mobile One$70
Virgin$40
Verizon$50 per month for unlimited talk, text and 4GB of data

What’s usually included in a cellphone plan?

Most cell phone carriers offer unlimited mobile-to-mobile (within their own company) on every plan they have.

Almost every plan comes with unlimited nights and weekends.  AT&T, however, sometimes has a minute limit on nights and weekends as well.

Free long distance and roaming is a basic feature on almost any cell phone plan.

Some companies, such as AT&T, have rollover minutes.  This means that any minutes you did not use one month will be added on to the total minutes you can use the following month.

Voicemail, call forwarding, and caller ID comes standard on most phones.

What are the extra costs?

Adding a line can range anywhere from as little as $20 to more than $40+ per month, depending on the carrier.

The advertised price of the cell phone plan you choose will not be the final price of your monthly bill.  There are taxes and other surcharges you will have to pay each month.  Check with your provider to get a final monthly bill before signing a contract.

Most cell phone plans require a signed two-year contract.  If you break this contract early, there is a substantial fee – usually between $150 and $200.

How can I save money?

Many cell phone companies give discounts to certain groups of people, such as veterans, teachers, etc.

Once your contract has expired, you can usually receive an even better plan as well as a free phone upgrade as an incentive to stay with that company.

Cell phone companies always have promotions.  Be sure to check out the promotion page before making a decision.

How Much Does College Cost?

Where you attend college and what you will study are two of the biggest decision you will ever make.  These decisions could greatly impact your life and your future.  While there are many things that will impact this decision, the cost of college is most often at the forefront.  The cost of college needs to be a balance; since it is an investment in your future, spending $20,000 or $30,000 on a four-year degree is not that unreasonable.  You need a good education from a respectable school in order to launch your career in the field of your choice.  However, if you choose a career that will earn you less than$50,000 annually, choosing a school that costs $30,000 per year is probably not a good idea.  Get a general idea of what you want to do in life, and choose a college that is as well-known and respected as you can for the price you are willing to pay.

How much does college cost?

According to CollegeBoard.com, “Nearly half (47 percent) of all full-time undergraduate college students attend a four-year college that has published charges of less than $9,000 per year for tuition and fees.”  Typical four-year in-state colleges will cost around $5,000 per semester for 12-16 credit hours.  This is a yearly cost of about $8,000-$10,000.  For example, the University of Toledo costs $3,650.49 per semester, a total of $7,300.98 per year.

If you are attending a state college and you’re not a resident of that state, expect to pay about $3,000-$7,000 more per year.

If you choose to attend a four-year private college, tuition will rise to between $20,000-$30,000 per year for a total four-year cost of $80,000-$120,000.  These colleges usually have much higher standards for acceptance into the college, but they also have such a high reputation that you will find it much easier to start your career.  Kiplinger has compiled a list of the best value in private colleges.

CNNMoney has a cost calculator to help you estimate the cost of four years of college.

What are the extra costs?

All colleges have some type of fees to apply.  These fees range from $30 to $50, so if you choose to apply to multiple colleges, this will really add up.  Some schools will include your application fee in your tuition if you get accepted and enroll.

If you are planning to live on campus, the yearly fees for college will greatly increase.  According to Examiner, “when room and board is included, the average cost of college at a state school is $16,140 per year and $36,993 at a private university.”  Aside from living on campus, don’t forget to factor in transportation, food, laundry and entertainment.

The cost of books is an unavoidable cost.  For a full-time student (12-16 credit hours per semester), a year of books will cost between $1,000 and $1,500.  This cost will depend on the class and how many books are required.

Be sure to factor in the inflation rate.  Each and every year, there’s going to be a rather good chance that the rates are going to go up.  The average inflation rate varies from 5 to 8 percent.

How can I save money?

Websites such as FastWeb and Scholarship.com can help you find and apply for scholarships for which you are eligible.

Filling out the FAFSA, which every college applicant is required to do, will determine if you are eligible for financial aid.

College students can save a lot of money on textbooks by buying them used.  Sites such as Amazon and can help; however, make sure you shop by the ISBN and not by the title as there are many editions of each textbook and professors are usually specific about the one they use.

Consider taking the route of a community college first.  Community college credits can easily transfer over to a state college.  By going this route, you’ll be able to save during your first two years of school.

How Much Does a Boutonniere Cost?

A boutonniere, usually worn by men, is a floral decoration usually consisting of one flower or a bud.  Boutonnieres are usually reserved for special occasions where formal wear is standard such as weddings, funerals or a homecoming dance.

“” (CC BY 2.0) by  R..D

How much does a boutonniere cost?

A boutonniere made with real flowers will average about $10 to $35.

A small boutonniere made with a fresh carnation or daisy will be about $5 to $10, one made with a medium-sized fresh rose will be around $10, and a boutonniere made from a fresh lily or Gerbera daisy will be about $15 to $20.

Silk boutonnieres are about the same cost.  The only difference is that a fresh boutonniere will not last forever, but a silk boutonniere can.  However, a silk boutonniere will not look as realistic.  Some people choose to have a fresh boutonniere made for the wedding day and then purchase a silk replica that they can keep.

According to multiple members on this WeddingBee.com forum thread, they had spent anywhere from as little as $4 for a DIY to $18+ at a local florist.

On FTD.com, a popular online florist, the best sellers

We compiled a list of the most common boutonnieres purchased for a special event and contacted a few florists to see what they would charge.  Here’s what we found:

Type of FlowerPrice Range
Calla Lily Boutonniere$10 to $27
Carnation Boutonniere$11 to $20
Daisy Boutonniere$13 to $30
Gardenia Boutonniere$12 to $30
Hydrangea Boutonniere$9 to $35
Orchid Boutonniere$13 to $24
Peony Boutonniere$11 to $35

Boutonniere overview

The actual boutonniere will be decorated with ribbon, ivy, and fillers, such as baby’s breath, according to the color of your wedding.  Other boutonnieres will not have any decorations such as ribbon.  Make sure you make your wishes clear when ordering from a florist.

Boutonnieres will come with a pin used to attach it to the men’s jackets.  However, depending on the weight of the boutonniere, you may need a second pin to keep it from falling off.  A boutonniere will be worn through the lapel buttonhole and will be kept in place with the loop on the back of the lapel.

The boutonnieres will be sent in a plastic container that can be used for temporary storage.

Most can be purchased online, via a local florist, through a wedding planner or bridal boutiques.

What are the extra costs?

If you order your boutonnieres online, you will be charged for shipping.  If you order fresh flowers online, they will need to be shipped overnight, which can be quite costly on larger orders.

If you order your boutonniere at the last minute, there may be an additional expedited charge.

Tips to know:

Try to purchase flowers that are in season.  Flowers that are out of season are going to cost more since the florist will have to order from places that are outside of the area.

Pick up flowers on the day of the wedding.  If flowers are picked up before the wedding, the heat can cause damage to the flowers causing them to wilt.

Before an order is placed, be sure to write down all the names that will receive a boutonniere.  There are times when a bride will place an order, only to find down the road that someone was left out of the purchase.

If purchasing the flowers for an event such as a prom, try to get a set that matches the dress or suit.

Keep the flower refrigerated until you’re able to put it on.  This will help keep the flower looking lively.

How can I save money?

When ordering multiple boutonnieres for a wedding, most florists offer the groom’s boutonniere for free with a purchase of a minimum number of total boutonnieres.  Ask your florist for more information.  Be sure to talk with the florist about bulk orders.  Many florists are more than happy to work with those that place bulk orders.

It is possible to make your own boutonnieres using a few simple instructions.

Try to purchase flowers in season since off-season flowers may be double or even triple the cost.

How to compare prices:

If using a local florist, it is best to use one that has been referred to you by someone you trust.  Leaving something this important up to a company without a good reputation may cause a bit of stress on the wedding day.

How Much Does a Remote Starter Installation Cost?

A remote starter is a feature that allows a car owner to start the car with the push of a button.  This can usually be done from up to 2,500 feet away and is helpful in the cold winters.  It also allows you to let your car warm up or cool down while leaving it locked, lessening the threat of theft.

Some new cars can be purchased with remote starters, but a remote starter can be installed separately on any car.  Most of the remote starters also come standard with keyless entry capabilities.  The cost of a remote starter can depend on the features, the age of the car as well as the brand.

How much does a remote starter install cost?

The cost of a remote starter installation will depend on the type, your car’s setup and the service you use.  The starter on its own will retail for $50 to $200, while the installation can be an additional $80 to $150.  With the part included, plan on budgeting $140 to $400.

The most basic remote starter, which only starts, locks, and unlocks your car, will cost between $50 to $75.  These are all prices for the start only and won’t include installation costs by a professional.

The next level of car starters, which has a car alarm in addition to the remote start and keyless entry, will cost about $70 to $120.

A remote starter, keyless entry, alarm, and security system pager will cost between $130 to $180.  This security pager will tell you if a door or trunk is open, if the car is running, if windows are opens, etc.  It will do all of this from up to 2500 feet away.

Advanced car starters that can notify you when the car engine has been turned on as well as can assist with turning on lights.  These same starters can also turn on the defroster, set customized times and more.  Higher end remote starters can cost as much as $400.

Other stores sell car starters as well, stores such as Car-Stuff.com also offers car starters for different types of starters for Hyundai, Ford, Buick, Volkswagen and Toyota are priced $48 to $125.

For example, the highly rated Bulldog RS1100 remote starter retails for $66 to $80.  Easy-to-install, this starter comes with a 4-button transmitter, dedicated start/stop buttons and has a range up to 400 feet.

Noted below are a few quotes we received for a professional remote starter installation.  These prices are for both the starter the installation job.

Chevrolet Silverado$200 to $375
Ford F-Series$200 to $400
Ford Focus$150 to $300
Ford Fusion$175 to $375
Honda Civic$200 to $350
Honda CR-V$200 to $400
Toyota Camry$250 to $450
Toyota Corolla$250 to $400

We called up a few local shops and asked them what they would charge us.  Here’s what we found:

CompanyBallpark Average for JUST Installation
Best BuyFREE (with promotion) to $200+
Midas$180 to $400
Pep Boys$200 to $400
Walmart$115 to $350
Ziebart$250 to $450

What is going to be included in the estimates?

Depending on the company you choose, the actual remote starter kit is the only thing included.  Other companies will include installation in the price, but this is rare.

Two key fobs are included in the purchase of most remote starters.

As for features, car starters will vary.  Some will just start the car, while others may include a trunk release, keyless entry, heated seats and window defrost.

Most remote starters come with some type of limited warranty.

During the installation process, the control module will be mounted and the wires will be connected to the starter, lights and door locks.  The keyless entry will then be installed so you’re able to unlock the doors.  An alarm, if included, will be installed as well.

What are the extra car starter costs?

If you buy the remote starter from a company, such as Commando, the installation will be an extra cost.  Installation instructions can be requested, but it is best to take it to a professional installer.  Car Tunes is an example of a company that will install remote starters.  Installation usually costs between $50-$100.  (You could also purchase the remote starter from them, usually resulting in free installation.)

If the key fob you are given is lost or stolen, there will be an extra cost to replace it or buy a new one.

If you need to get your remote starter uninstalled (if you are turning in a lease or selling the car and wish to keep the starter), there is usually a similar cost to getting the initial installation done.

Repairs down the road may be required if the remote starter fails and work needs to be done.  This work can be done through either via the technician that has done it in the past or through another third-party vendor.

Tips to know:

If purchasing a car remote starter, make sure that the starter is going to work with your car make and model.

Be sure to go to an authorized dealer if you’re going to have a third party install the device.

Most remote car starters won’t start with a manual transmission car.  This is due to the fact that the clutch has to be pressed in to start the vehicle.

If you’re going to have a remote starter system installed, you may also want to consider having an alarm installed with it.  This type of combination package is a great way to save on an alarm.

Top brands to consider:

Astra

Bulldog

Python

Viper

How can I save money?

Most stores that sell and install remote starters will have them on sale from time to time.  Watch the store ads to get the best price.

Get the remote starter with the least added features for your needs.  For example, if you don’t live in a high-crime area, the car alarm may not be necessary.

Consider the age of the car.  Older cars may not require a remote starter because of it’s age.  It’s unnecessary to install a starter into an older car as it may not last as long as expected.

Consider installing the remote starter on your own.  If you have any sort of car experience, the job isn’t that hard to do.  Consider various resources online that can assist with the installation process.  Trust your gut on this one.  If you feel that you don’t have the necessary experience, it’s best to leave it up to a professional.

Passport overview

A blue passport cover with the United States government seal is sent with your passport.

The passport book will be stored inside this cover.

A passport card (if purchased), about the size and shape of a credit card, will be sent as well.

Routine processing time will take about four to six weeks. The expediting fee can get you a passport within 14 days.

Getting your first passport

  1. To receive your first passport, you will want to search for the closest passport agency or post office near you.  Be sure to see when they accept applicants, when they accept applicants and if you need an appointment.
  2. Fill out the DS-11 application form.
  3. Bring evidence of U.S. citizenship and a valid identification.
  4. Your application fee.
  5. Passport photos, which can be taken at some post offices or a local drug store such as CVS.

What are the extra costs?

All passport applications must be accompanied by a 2″x2″ headshot photo.  This passport photo can be taken at the post office or secretary of state.  Check with your local office for requirements.  This passport photo usually costs about $15.

If you need your passport in a shorter amount of time than 8 weeks (the average time it takes to get a passport), you will be charged extra.  Expedited service will cost $60 and overnight shipping of your passport book will cost $15.

Adding pages to your passport book will cost an extra $82.

Passport applicants must have a copy of their birth certificate and a current government-issued piece of photo identification.  If you cannot provide this information, a $150 file search fee will be charged in order to confirm your citizenship.

If you need to change your name after the passport has been issued for more than one year, you will have to prove your new name and pay the new fee.

If your passport was stolen, you will need to apply for a new one and will have to pay the standard application fee.

Tips to know:

If you’re going to be traveling within the next two weeks, an expedited passport can be obtained.  While there is no guarantee that the passport will arrive, you’ll have to prove that you’re leaving the country within two weeks.  You will also have to prove why you need it within 2 weeks.  If it’s because of an emergency, there’s a good chance that you can get it.  If you want it because you’re going on vacation, it will more than likely be denied.

Going to a local, regional passport agency is going to make the process a lot smoother than mailing your passport information is.  To find a local passport office within your state, you can find more locations located at Travel.State.gov.

Third party expediting services may sound appealing, but what you’re going to find out is that it’s going to be a lot easier to do the job yourself.  Most services will do everything that you can do on your own such as mailing out the required material.

Changing your name and correcting errors won’t cost anything

The Department of State will accept credit cards and certified checks.  Don’t feel as if you have to bring cash to the local passport offices.

If you were to lose your passport while away from the United States, you will want to make sure you travel with a photocopy of both your passport and some sort of identification.  You will want to contact the nearest U.S. embassy for a new passport.

How can I save money?

Although the fees are set by the government and cannot be negotiated or put “on sale”, applying for your passport a few months in advance will get you the cheapest price possible.

The cost of a passport is already set by the government as mentioned above, but you can save when you need your pictures taken.  Consider calling up a few pharmacies and post offices to see who’s going to offer it at the best price.

How Much Does a Ferret Cost?

According to everythingferret.com, a ferret is a “member of the weasel family and a descendant of the European Polecat.  Some other members of the weasel family are minks, otters, and the endangered Black-Footed Ferret.”  While ferrets are working animals in some countries, in the United States they are most often just considered lovable pets.  Ferrets require a lot of exercise, free play and can be harder to take care of than a domestic cat.  Most claim, however, that they are much more fun and active.

How much does a ferret cost?

The cost to purchase a ferret can be anywhere from $100 to $500.  The costs will depend on where you purchase it, the type, age, quality and geographical location.

Private home breeders tend to be a pinch more, and they can cost upwards of $300 to $400.

PetCo, for example, , with prices ranging from as little as $100 to more than $175.

According to myferretpet.com, she spent $175 on the cage and another $500 for the items necessary to care for the ferret.  All in all, she already spent $675 in supplies before even purchasing the ferret.

What are the extra costs?

Because ferrets are very playful animals, they enjoy playing with toys.  Ferret-specific toys can be purchased at toy stores and will usually cost around $10.

If you are going to travel with your ferret, you will need a travel cage.  This will cost approximately $15 to $30.

Some ferret owners use a leash and harness to give their ferret the exercise it needs.  If this is the case, plan on spending about $10 to $15.

Both male and female ferrets do need to be spayed and neutered.  Some ferrets are also descended.  This is sometimes already done when purchasing your ferret.  If not, it will cost the owner between $75 and $250.

Ferrets also need routine veterinary checkups for things such as teeth cleaning, heart work medication, vaccinations, etc.  The average yearly cost for routine veterinary visits is $90.   The first checkup should be around $70 to $100.  Plan on budgeting at least $50 for annual shots.  Ferrets are susceptible to several types of cancer and serious diseases such as canine distemper.

Overall, plan on budgeting at least $600 to $1,000 for the first year.  After that first year, supplies, food and litter should cost around $15 to $30 per month.  Don’t forget to set aside a few hundred dollars to help with emergency vet bills if they pop up.

Ferret supplies to consider:

A cage ($100 to $200)

Bedding for the cage ($20 per bag)

Food ($10 to $30 per month)

Food Dish ($2 to $10)

Grooming supplies that include trimmers, brush, and shampoo ($10 to $20)

Litter ($5 to $15 per month)

Litter box ($10 to $25)

Toys ($5 to $25)

Treats ($1 to $6)

Water bottle that attaches to the cage ($10)

Leash and harness ($5 to $15)

Carrier ($25 to $50)

Tips to know:

On average, a ferret is going to live anywhere from 6 to 12 years.  Males are generally going to be larger than a female.  A male can grow up to 16 inches, while a female can only grow up to around 14 inches.

Just like a cat, a ferret can sleep up to 18 hours a day.  If the ferret is new to the household, it can eventually learn to adapt to its owner’s schedule.

While these ferrets have a poor sense of sight, they have phenomenal sense and smell.

Because of their skin glands, a ferret will emit a rather unique, musky odor.  Many think that bathing can get rid of this smell, but it won’t work.  One of the most common ways to get rid of this odor is simply by removing the ferret’s scent glands.

If the ferret has been home-raised, there’s no need to descend them.

Common diseases that ferrets can encounter include adrenal disease, insulinoma, Aleutian disease and the flu.

To learn more in-depth about the ferrets and how to take care of them, Ferrets for Dummies is a fantastic read.

Some states require you need a license in order to keep a ferret as a pet.  For example, California forbids owning a ferret with the exception of a neutered male and penalties may apply if you’re caught.  If you’re unsure, contact your local Humane Society for more information.

A healthy ferret will be active, sleep up to 18 hours per day and will have a shiny coat.

Monthly baths are recommended to get rid of the ferret’s musky odor it develops.  The nails should be cut every two to three weeks.

Types of ferrets

How can I save money?

One way to save money on a ferret is to get it from a previous owner or an animal shelter.  These ferrets will usually have current vaccinations and already be spayed or neutered.

Purchasing used ferret equipment, such as the cage and feeding bowls, can also cut down on the costs.  eBay is a great website to check for used equipment.

Since bedding will have to be replaced every few weeks, consider using older t-shirts instead of the bedding you purchase in the store.

Check with your local state and city.  Some cities have banned this type of animal and won’t allow it.  Ensure that this animal is allowed within your area before making a purchase.

How Much Does Carpet Cost?

Carpet installation is usually one of the first things people do when buying a new home.  It is also something that normally needs to be done every 10-15 years, depending on the quality of the existing carpet.  Because of the wide range of carpet options, the price can vary greatly.  Carpet comes in a variety of styles, such as loose texture, tightly looped, patterned, or Frieze.  Carpet also comes in a variety of fabrics including wool and nylon.  Some of these carpets are specifically designed to be more durable while others are designed to be cheaper.

How much does carpet cost?

Carpet costs can range in price from $2 per square foot to more than $10 per square foot, depending on the type, brand, where it’s purchased and quality of the carpet.

Some stores include padding in their advertised prices while others charge separately.  Padding that is not included can cost anywhere from $2 to $6 per square yard (9 square feet).  The thicker the padding, the longer the carpet will last and the softer the floor will be.  However, the thicker the padding the higher the price.

Most store prices include the installation of the carpet you purchase, but other stores may advertise lower prices and charge extra for installation.  If the installation is not included, it can cost anywhere from $2 to $5 per square yard.  This price is probably the one that will vary the most from company to company.

Some companies charge a fee to get rid of your existing carpet while others include this in the price.  This fee is usually between $1 to $2 per square yard.

According to the CarpetProfessor.com, you should plan on spending anywhere from $1.66 per square foot for carpet that will last five years to as much as $5 per square foot for a heavy traffic carpet that lasts more than 20 years.

Type of CarpetPrice per Square Foot
Low foot traffic$1.50 to $3.50
Medium traffic$2 to $4
Moderate traffic$3 to $5.50
Heavy foot traffic$3 to $5.50

What is going to be included?

Every company is different in what it includes.  What is included in the advertised price is one of the first questions you should ask when shopping for carpet.  Here is what is generally included:

The carpet and padding will normally be included in the advertised price.

The installation of this padding and carpet is usually included in your final price.

The removal of your old carpet and padding is usually included in the advertised price as well but can be an additional charge in some cases.

What are the extra costs to be aware of?

Some companies charge extra for the initial measurement of your room to see how much carpet is needed.  Other companies include this home-visit for free, while others do not do this at all.

Some carpets are treated in order to avoid staining.  This stain treatment is usually an extra cost.

Some carpets are made out of recycled materials and may cost more per square yard.

If a room is a unique shape and will use more carpet cuts than normal, it will probably be more expensive.

If there are stairs included in the area being carpeted, there will be an extra charge.

Many companies will charge extra if there is furniture that needs to be moved.

While some companies provide a cheaper pad, this tends to be on the thin side.  If you want to upgrade to a premium carpet pad, it can cost upwards of $1 to $2 per square foot.

If the subfloor is weak, a contractor may recommend replacing the subfloor before installing the carpet.  This can cost an additional $50 to $75 per hour.

While optional, molding may be added after the carpet is installed.

Tips to know:

Gather three to five samples from your local carpet store to compare to the colors in your home.  This is a great way to see if the carpet will match up to the overall theme of your home.

Consider a higher grade carpet for households that are going to have a lot of foot traffic, or for those that have animals such as cats and dogs.

Spend a little more money on stain-resistant carpets.  These carpets are easier to clean when the stains are present.  These are ideal for those that have children.

When browsing carpet samples, look at the back and see what kind of fiber the company use and what kind of warranty they include.  If the fiber count is listed, you will look for a higher number because these strands reflect the carpet’s durability.  These specifications will help you determine how good the carpet will be.

Types of carpet:

Berber

A durable type of carpet that doesn’t leave behind footprints of vacuum marks.  Built with a thicker yarn, Berber is designed for higher trafficked areas.  The smaller loops inside of the carpet can often hold more dirt.

Cut Pile

Known as the best selling carpet, a cut pile type bundles standing straight out.  Creating a high-class appearance, this type of carpet doesn’t “crush” as much as other carpets.

Frieze

Tightly twisted carpet, this type is great for high-trafficked areas.  Created with tight fibers, these fibers tend to curl.

Saxony

Tightly twisted carpet, this type of carpet will consist of at least two different fibers.  With a softer feel, this type of carpet will show all vacuum mark and footprints.

Texture

Commonly found in children’s rooms and living areas, this type of carpet is tightly twisted and has great durability.  With its look, it can easily hide footprints and marks.

Velvet

Softer than most carpets on the market, velvet carpets are ideal for bedrooms and living rooms.  Showing every footprint, this tends to be a luxurious carpet for homes.

Common carpet material

Acrylic

This has a spongy feel and is resistant to most stains and mildew.  It’s easy to clean and is also fade resistant.

Cotton

Very soft and has a similar feel to garments made from cotton.  This type of carpet can stain easily and is not ideal for homes with children and pets.

Nylon

This is used in more than 65 percent of the carpets sold in the United States.  This is notably the strongest type of carpet material since it’s considered durable and resistant to mold.

Polyester

Also resistant to mold and mildew, and it is known for its color patterns.

Polypropylene

Known as another common material uses, polypropylene is incredible stain-resistant and resists fading.

Wool

This is a premium material that’s known for its deep and luxurious feel.

How can I save money?

Doing some of the work yourself can save some money.  Ripping out your old carpet and padding and disposing of it can save you money with some companies.  Moving your own furniture can also lower the cost.

Hiring a private installer may be cheaper than having the company from which you bought the carpet also install it.

Try to clean your carpets at least once a year.  Whether you do it yourself or professionally, this can help prolong your carpets.  By avoiding a cleaning, carpets will tend to wear away faster than others.

How to compare prices:

When comparing prices, be sure to ask what all is included in the “per square foot” or “per square yard” price that is advertised.

Big box retailers like and will offer a free estimate and even measurement during some sales.

How Much Does Acupuncture Cost?

According to the Mayo Clinic, acupuncture is defined as “the insertion of extremely thin needles in your skin at strategic points on your body.”  The purpose of this is to “stimulate nerves, muscles and connective tissue.  This stimulation appears to boost the activity of your body’s natural painkillers and increase blood flow.”  While some people participate in acupuncture as a strictly mental process, “balancing the flow of energy or life force”, other people believe that acupuncture can actually help you physically and can have medical advantages.

How much does acupuncture cost?

A normal visit for acupuncture will cost between $60-$120, according to acufinder.com.  This cost will be on the higher side for the initial visit since a complete medical history and physical exam must be completed.

The average acupuncture cost for a routine acupuncture session is about $75.  Some insurance companies cover the cost of acupuncture while others do not.  Some companies will only cover it if you have a note from a physician recommending it or if the acupuncture takes place at a physician’s office.  The cost will depend on the type of therapy needed, the number of sessions and professional you use.

For example, an acupuncturist located in Los Angeles charges $125 for the first session, and the cost of acupuncture for subsequent sessions is $80.

UCSanDiego says acupuncture may be covered by health insurance, but if you’re not, its clinic charges $124 per session.

Acupuncture overview

The initial visit will include a medical history and physical exam.  The initial visit will usually last the longest compared to the visits that come afterward.

The acupuncturist will meet with you to discuss what exactly you hope to accomplish or heal by receiving acupuncture treatment.

The actual acupuncture session will take about 30 to 40 minutes.

Before the procedure begins, the acupuncturist will ask some health-related questions.  This will give he or she a better understanding of your past.  They will want to inquire about things regarding your diet, emotions, sleep cycle and more.  After this exam has been finished, they will start the process.

During the procedure, the acupuncturist will use anywhere from 6 to 15 needles.  These needles will be inserted in a precise placement.  While no pain is generally felt, you’ll find that you can feel a slight pain or prick type sensation.  The needles are inserted about 1/16 to a few inches deep, depending on the location.  These procedures can last up to one hour.

The number of sessions you need will depend on the person.  Some people will see great results during the first, while others, who have chronic conditions, may need multiple sessions in a month to see desirable results.

Commonly treated ailments

Upper respiratory tract

Respiratory system

Eye disorders

Gastrointestinal disorders

Neurological disorders

Ear, nose, and throat disorders

Immune disorders

Addictions

Emotional disorders

Musculoskeletal disorders

What are the extra costs?

A small percentage of people have reported some pain and discomfort after acupuncture; some of these have required therapy to repair any damage caused.  This is usually only the case when the acupuncture is administered incorrectly.

Depending on who is visited, some practitioners will recommend Chinese herbs.  These herbs, such as ginseng can help by treating ailments on top of the acupuncture procedure.

While optional, some patients will provide a tip to their acupuncturist.  While most do accept them, it’s best to give 10 to 20 percent of the initial fee.

Types of Acupuncture:

Cupping

The acupuncturist will apply glass cups to create a suction on the skin.  Once the suction has been applied, this will help relieve stagnation.

Electrostimulation

Providing an electrical stimulation, an acupuncturist will use two to four needles to treat the area.

Herbal Medicine

Herbs in the form of teas and pills can help supplement the treatment after it has been done.

Moxibustion

The acupuncture needles will be heated with dried herb sticks.  Warming the point, these needles are also known as, “moxa.”

Japanese

A “Japanese-style” acupuncture will use the same points as traditional Chinese acupuncture, but it typically uses thinner needles.

Korean Hand

This technique will focus more on using the hands.

Auricular

This type is commonly used for those who are fighting some sort of addiction such as drugs and alcohol.

Tips to know:

Common conditions that are treated with acupuncture include things such as the common cold, arthritis, cramps, lower back pain, asthma, weight loss, sinus problems, headaches and more.

Acupuncture is a great way to help kick the smoking habit to the curb.  For those who currently struggle with smoking may want to give something such as acupuncture a shot.

Acupuncture is going to release pain-relieving endorphins.  Upon inserting these needles, acupuncture is going to stimulate circulation, as well as influence electrical currents throughout the body.

99 percent of the time, health insurance providers won’t cover a procedure such as this.  While it doesn’t hurt to ask, most insurance companies don’t deem it medically necessary.

If you take any sort of prescription medicine, always be sure to let them know.

Questions to ask:

Are you NCCAOM certified?  Make sure that the acupuncturist is certified by the national board.  This will ensure that he/she has passed the state exam.

How many years have you had your practice?  How many people have you worked with?

Are you licensed through the health state department?

How many hours am I going to be here?  Do you accept insurance coverage?

How can I save money?

Because acupuncture treatment usually takes multiple sessions, scheduling all appointments up front can usually save you money.

If you do plan on going to have acupuncture done more than once, you may want to consider purchasing the services in a package.  These packages can include help for smokers or even those looking to lose weight.

Going to a chiropractor or physician that offers acupuncture is usually cheaper than going to someone who specializes in acupuncture only.

These books may also help you with how the process works, as well as what you can expect with the process.

Check around your area to see if there are community centers that provide discounts to those who meet certain income requirements.  If certain income is met, the center may be able to provide a 30-minute session for less than $30.

How Much Does Car Insurance Cost?

Because it is illegal to drive a motor vehicle without insurance, the cost of insurance is something that will eventually affect everyone.  This cost varies according to many different factors.  One of these factors is your age.  Generally, the longer you have been driving, the more experience you will have; therefore the insurance is cheaper as you get older.  Another factor that will affect the cost is the type of car you drive.  How old it is as well as how it is made will cause the price of insurance to rise and fall.  Normally the older the car, the cheaper the insurance will be.  The area where you live can also affect the cost of your auto insurance.  The cost of your deductible, which is the amount you pay in case of an accident, can greatly affect the yearly cost of insurance.  The higher the deductible, the cheaper your price will be.  Finally, your driving record, such as number of accidents and tickets, can affect the cost of you car insurance.  Safer drivers usually receive cheaper rates.

How much is car insurance?

Before we can discuss the cost, we must understand the different types of coverage available to you.  If you drive an older vehicle, your best option is simple liability insurance.  This will legally cover you in case of an accident, but will usually not cover the cost to fix or replace the car.  If you have a newer car, it is best to have comprehensive coverage, which legally covers you as a driver as well as covering the cost to repair or replace the car in case of an accident.

Simple liability coverage for an older vehicle can cost anywhere from $400 to $900 per year, depending on the combination of factors listed above.  Some companies  bill you monthly, others bi-monthly, and some every six months.

Comprehensive coverage for a newer car can cost between $1,000-$4,000 per year, and this price is determined by the factors listed above.

Since there are so many factors involved, it’s extremely hard to give an accurate quote.  To play it safe, it’s best to budget anywhere from $50 to $350 per month for a policy.  $50 would be for a cheaper, basic policy with little to no coverage, while a premium policy that covers everywhere could be near $350.  To get an accurate quote for your circumstances, consider using this tool.

According to thezebra.com, the national auto insurance premium in 2016 was $1,323.

KiaVan$1,100 to $1,300
ToyotaVan$1,100 to $1,300
VolkswagenVan$1,100 to $1,400

Factors that affect car insurance quotes:

Coverage

As mentioned above, the type of coverage that you’re seeking is going to play a major factor on the overall quote.  The higher your limits are, the higher your price will be.  The same can be said about your deductible; the lower this is, the higher your premium will be.

Type of Car

This is another major factor that is going to influence the price.  For example, a two-door sports car is going to cost a lot more to insure than a simple mini-van.  History has shown that the type of car can often reflect the driving habits of the driver.

Habits

The insurance company will want to know how often you’re going to drive the car.  Where will it be parked?  How many miles do you plan on driving?  Cars parked in a crime-ridden area could cost more to insure.

Age

Another big factor is the driver’s age.  Drivers under the age of 22 generally are going to pay more than someone over the age of 26.  Again, age isn’t the only factor because the driving history will play a big role as well.  Once a driver hits 65, the rates can creep up again.

Gender

Believe it or not but women tend to pay lower premiums than men.  Why?  Studies have shown that women are safer drivers.

Driving Record

Another big thing that car insurance companies look at is a driving record.  The more accidents and violations you have, the higher your premiums can be.  Those who have a safe and clean history tend to have the lower rates.

Credit Score

Insurance companies will check your credit score, and if your score is low, they deem you will be a greater risk of filing a claim.

Location

If you live in an area that is known for theft, count on your premium going up.  Aside from crime, weather may also play a role if your location is known for natural disasters.

Usage

How is the car going to be used?  Is it for personal purposes, or is it going to be used for work?  A combination of both?  The more you plan on driving it, the higher risk you become.

What are the extra costs?

There are many “fine print” things that are not covered by insurance.  For instance, some insurance will cover the cost of you hitting a deer while others may not.  Be sure to read all information to avoid having to pay more than you planned.

Tips to know:

Some insurance companies will provide a car for you to drive while your car is being repaired if you add it as an optional to your policy.

Research the appropriate coverage that you’re going to need with your car.  Be sure to know the differences between comprehensive and collision coverage.

Always call up at least three different car insurance companies because all of them are going to greatly vary in terms of quotes.  Most car insurance companies are more than happy to give a no obligation quote.

If you’re a student, have an anti-theft device installed, or if you already have coverage with the company, most will be more than happy to give a discount.

How can I save money?

There are many discounts given by insurance companies, but most of them are not advertised.  You must inquire about them specifically.  These can include discounts according to your occupation (teacher, police officer, etc.) or veteran discounts.

Multiple car discounts are usually available if you insure two or more cars through the same insurance provider.  This discount can be even greater if you hold your homeowners insurance through the same company as well.

How to compare prices:

Services such as insureME and esurance can help you get an idea of what price range you will fall into.

Although they may not be able to give you an exact amount, most insurance companies can give you a free quote over the phone.
