How Much Does a Helicopter License Cost?

Those who want to fly the great blue skies have the option of getting a helicopter license.  While this license is going to be different than a pilot license, it is going to have the same type of training needs such as a certain amount of hours that must be logged and tests that need to be passed.

How much does a helicopter license cost?

The costs depend on which certificate you need and the school you choose.  This is a hard question to answer since it will vary from school to school and how many hours you need to become endorsed to take your final test.  On average, to successfully become a private pilot using a R22, the costs should be between $12,000 to $17,000.  This is for the private license only and won’t include any training after.  When pricing it per lesson, plan on spending about $250 to $375 per lesson.  Each lesson will add about an hour or two to your log.

What's neededHow much time?Cost
R22 time40 hours~$200/hr x 40 = $8,000
Flight Instructor Time25 hours~$50/hr x 25 = $1,250
SuppliesKit to study$350
Ground School10 hours$50 x 10 = $500
Total(These are estimates and you may need more hours. Plan on adding about 10 more hours to this to be safe)$10,100 (lower end)

The next step after the private helicopter license is the commercial pilot rating.  In order to get here, however, you will need a total of 150 hours.  If you were to meet the minimum requirements during your private license schooling at 40 hours, you would still need an additional 110 hours.  At $200 per hour, this would be an additional $22,000 to add to the costs noted below.  This rating will allow you to be paid and will allow you to fly passengers in a single-engine helicopter.  To complete this training, it will cost about $6,000 to $9,000.  Again, this will depend on how man hours you need.  Refer to the chart below.

What's neededHow much time?Cost
R22 flying time20 hours$200/hr x 20 hours = $4,000
Flight instructor time10 hours$50/hr x 10 hours = $500
Classroom material$300
Ground School10 hours$50/hr x 10 hours = $500
Total(This is the price at a minimum, and again, it's best to add at least 10 hours at $200/hr to this price)$4,300 (low end)

If you want to receive solo hours, without having to pay for them, the best way to do this is by instructing.  You will need to receive your certified flight instructor rating and this will usually cost about $11,000 to $14,000 to acquire.  The costs are broken down below:

What's neededHow much time?Cost
Dual time in R2225 hours25 hours x $200 = $5,000
Ground school40 hours40 hours x $50 = $2,000
Pre & post flights with instructor10 hours10 hours x $50 = $500
Total(this will be on the lower end)$7,500

NOTE:  All of the prices noted above won’t include the written exams or any additional hours you may need to successfully pass.

Instrument ratings can cost $12,000 for commercial and about $2,000 for a certified flight instructor.

The Hillsboro Aero Academy, for instance, charges about $14,130 for the private pilot certificate and $34,011 for the commercial pilot certificate without an instrument rating.

Helicopter license overview

Most helicopter pilots will follow this path:  student, private, commercial and certified flight instructor.  Many pilots will often receive their instrument rating in between their private and commercial rating.

The first step in getting your helicopter license is by passing the private helicopter license portion.  This will allow you to fly a fixed-wing helicopter on your own with family and friends.  You will, however, be prohibited from transporting cargo or paying passengers.  You may be able to ride for a charitable event.

A private license will require 40 hours of aeronautical experience.  This will include 20 hours of training with an instructor, 10 hours of solo flight time and three hours cross country.  It will also require three takeoffs and landings at an airport with a control tower and three hours of night training on a trip over 50 miles.  These are the minimum requirements, and most pilots need more than this in order to qualify since an instructor has to endorse you based on your skill.  The average helicopter pilot needs about 50 hours before they take their test.

A commercial license will require pilots have 150 hours at a minimum with 100 as pilot in command.

The average lesson will last about one to two hours and will include ground instruction and instruction while flying in the skies.

What are the extra costs?

Registration fees

Registration fees may apply and can be around $100 to $200.

Supplies

Supplies, as well as books, are going to be necessary for the classroom training.  Supplies and books will cost anywhere from $300 to $700.  Jeppesen learning materials, a kit commonly found at training centers, will cost about $300 for all the materials.

Ground school

Ground schools can cost about $40 to $60 hours and you will need about 10 hours of training, bringing the total to $400 to $600.

FAA exams

A final exam and knowledge test will be required by the FAA.  These exams, as well as the flight test, are going to cost around $450 to $700 total.  The FAA knowledge test will cost about $150, while the check ride will cost around $500.

Simulators

To log more hours, many schools offer a flight simulator where a student can fly as if he or she was flying in a helicopter.  This can cost about $100 per hour.  A helicopter will have to be rented if you don’t use a simulator.  To rent a helicopter, it will cost anywhere from $150 to $600 per hour.  This will all depend on the type of helicopter you want.  A R22, for example, can cost $250 per hour, while an R44 can cost $500 per hour.   On top of renting a helicopter, if the student is still in the training period, an instructor will be required to fly and he or she will charge an hourly rate.

Medical certificate

A medical certificate will cost about $100 to $200.

Housing

Housing, if you need it, will need to be planned for.  Some school do offer housing options nearby or you can rent an apartment if need be.

Headset

Renting a headset, if you don’t have one, can cost $5 to $15.

Tips to know

In order to receive your private helicopter license, you must be a U.S. citizen, be at least 17 years old, endorsed by an instructor, pass a written knowledge test, meet flying time requirements, pass a practical test and hold a medical clearance.  There is no age requirement to start training, though.

To fly solo, you will need to receive a medical certificate.

Most professional helicopter jobs will ask you have a minimum of at least 1,000 hours and the most common way to receive these hours are by becoming a certified flight instructor (CFI).  Instructing allows you to teach other students while receiving your hours while training them.  To become a CFI, you will need a minimum of 200 hours.

How can I save money?

Shop around since flight schools are going to vary greatly in pricing.  It’s always best to check with at least three schools before making your decisions.  Don’t just pick out the closest school or cheapest one.  You will want to do a number of things such as talking with the instructor, checking the safety rating, looking at the graduation rates, and if job placement opportunities are available — the placement rate.  Copters.com does a good job showing you what you should look for in a school.

When coming down to purchasing learning materials, consider purchasing used books via websites, such as Amazon and eBay.

Many schools offer financing options for those who can’t pay the costs up front.

Those who have been in the military may be able to use their GI bill.  Talk to the the school to explore your options.

How Much Does a Haircut Cost?

A haircut is a necessity in life, and whether you get it done by a professional salon or franchise-based haircut service, the cut won’t come free.

How much does a haircut cost?

For a lower grade haircut salon, such as st Fantastic Sam’s or Great Clips, the cost is going to range anywhere from $8 for a cut to $40 or more for a shampoo, plus a cut.

Walmart, The Hair Cuttery, Sports Clips, Supercuts and other franchise-based chains will have very similar pricing.  Haircuts here should be in the $8 to $20 range.

Higher-end salons and barber shops that aren’t affiliated with a franchise are going to charge anywhere from $45 to as much as $250 for a cut and shampoo alone.  The more credibility a salon has, the higher the price tag will be.

The price really depends on what type hair cut you are getting, the salon and if additional services are required.   On average, a haircut will range anywhere from $7 to more than $90.  Be sure to look at our table below to see what major salons across the United States charge.

According to the Professional Beauty Association, the average woman spent $42, while a man spent $28.

SalonPrice for haircut only
Cost Cutter Haircut$17
Fantastic Sams Haircut$15
Great Clips Haircut$8 (with coupon) to $15
Regis Haircut$27
Smartstyle Haircut$11
Sports Clips Haircut$22
Ulta Haircut$36+
Walmart Haircut$14

What is going to be included in the estimate?

The haircut will usually include a pre-haircut shampoo service or post-haircut styling.  Results may vary in your location.  Some stylists may cut your hair in less than 10 minutes, while another may cut, blow dry, style and clean your hair.  Some higher-end salons may also offer complimentary coffee, drinks and snacks.

Upon arriving at the salon, the stylist will simply ask what you would like to have done, and the average job can last anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes.

What are the extra costs?

How much to tip a hair stylist? A tip isn’t going to be included, but most stylists are going to expect one.  Tips usually range anywhere from five to 15 percent of the total price.

Adding color, highlights or extensions, will be an extra cost.  Highlights can start at $65, while permanent straightening can cost $100 per session.

Most salons will have products that a customer can purchase after the haircut, such as shampoos and conditioners.

Trimming a beard or mustache can be an additional charge as most don’t include this with their haircut package.

How can I save money?

Most franchised-based salons always have coupons in the local paper or even online.  Search for these coupons before going in.  Many hair salons may accept competitor coupons.  Be sure to call ahead of time to see if your salon is willing to accept these.

Many local cosmetology schools will offer hair cuts at a discounted rate.  About.com tells you when it’s a good idea to get your hair cut at a beauty college.

With haircuts, you get what you what you pay for.  Local franchised haircut places may employ recent graduates with little experience, while a highly popular salon in the middle of New York City may employ stylists who have been doing it for years.  However, just because the haircut is $150, it doesn’t mean the cut will be great.

Children haircuts will often be $5 to $7 cheaper than adult cuts at most salons.

How Much Does Acupuncture for a Dog Cost?

While not commonly known, there is acupuncture which can be helpful for dogs.  Acupuncture that is done for dogs usually helps with pain or joint problems, such as arthritis.  This procedure is usually performed by a professional veterinarian, and the cost of a session will vary depending on the clinic and the length of the session.

How much does acupuncture for a dog cost?

Each acupuncture session will generally last 15 minutes to more than an hour.  On average, this session is going to cost anywhere from $50 to as much as $225.  Some veterinarians will recommend that more than one session.

Mom.me claims the average session can be $25 to $120 for a 15 to a 120-minute session.  The average dog will need about eight sessions.

Acupuncture for a dog overview

Consultation, as well as the session, is going to be included in the price range mentioned above.

Vets are going to recommend acupuncture for dogs older than eight since it is a great procedure for dogs that have conditions such as arthritis and hip problems.

During the procedure, the vet will insert special needles in specific points on the body that cause a healing effect.  These needles will help redirect the body’s energy, which is known as chi, and it will also release endorphins, which control the pain.  This technique has been used in countries such as China for more than 3,000 years.

Vets may use four techniques:  dry insertion, using a needle with electricity, aqua-puncture or moxabustion.   Dry insertion is the most common procedure, and the vet will simply insert the needles directly into the skin.  If needles with electricity will be used, small electrodes will be hooked up to the needles to help stimulate the nerves.  Aqua-puncture will contain herbs and will be injected directly into the body.  Lastly, moxabustion will combine the needles and a warm Chinese herb to provide heat.

The number of needles needed will depend on the dog’s condition, size and problem.  Some areas may require a few needles, while other areas could require more than 30.  Each dog will vary.

Acupuncture sessions can help with arthritis, spasms, disk problems, digestive problems, kidney diseases, hip dysplasia, paralysis, respiratory problems, kidney problems and a weakened immune system.

What are the extra costs?

Sedation-based medicines may be administered if the dog tends to move around a lot.

More than one session may be required for your dog to feel better.  Keep in mind that acupuncture generally doesn’t cure problems such as arthritis.  Instead, it will provide temporary relief.

If the problem is greater than expected, the vet may recommend additional medicine or even surgery.

Tips to know:

The needles will be shorter than a half inch and will be thinner than a cat’s whisker.

Before taking your dog to any vet, be sure to see if they are certified with acupuncture.  To find a vet in your area, who is certified, visit the official American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association website. If your vet can’t do it, they may be able to make a referral as well.

For dog owners who have a dog that is older that eight years old, it may be best to take your dog in twice a year, especially if they are suffering from conditions such as arthritis and joint problems.

Most of the time, dogs will find that these needles are going to be rather painless; however, if the needles are used in an area with a knot or spasm, it may be slightly uncomfortable.  If you feel your dog is going to react funny, it’s best to consult with a vet to see what he or she recommends.

There are 173 acupuncture points in animals and are located where there is a high density of nerve endings.

Dogs that tend to stress or are aggressive may not be a great candidate.

How can I save money?

Acupuncture isn’t always necessary.  Since acupuncture isn’t generally practiced on dogs, consider other options.  While improvements may be seen after a few weeks, the problem may come back after time.  Dog owners often resort to this procedure when surgery isn’t an option due to their age.

Optional herbal remedies are available if you feel your dog may not adapt well to the needles.  Many dog owners find that the sessions simply aren’t worth it.

The first session is going to cost the most money.  If you plan on taking your dog to more than one session, talk with the vet to see if they can offer any type of discount.

How Much Do Hair Drug Tests Cost?

A hair follicle drug test is considered to be a zero-tolerance test and is one of the most reliable methods of drug detection today.  It is used by parents, law enforcement, officials, and employers  With this procedure, even the smallest amount of a drug can be revealed.

How much do hair drug tests cost?

To use a professional, the costs will depend on the testing center and geographical location.  On average, plan on spending about $100 to $350 for the testing.   This will depend on the number of drugs the test has to detect and lab providing the test.  A 5-panel test can cost as little as $100, while a 14-panel test can be closer to $350.

At home tests can cost anywhere from as little as $35 to $90.  This will depend on the brand and where it’s purchased from.  For example, the Hair Confirm drug test is going to cost between $50 to $85.  The First Check 12 drug test can cost anywhere from $38 to $49.

Hair drug tests overview

A hair drug test analysis can supply a drug record over the past 90 days and has consistently been shown to be more dependable than a urinalysis since it can only go back seven days.  Drugs can be detected about seven to 10 days after the drug has been used.  This is the time it usually takes to allow the affected hair to emerge from the scalp.

Using a small hair sample cut at the scalp, this test evaluates the amount of the substance deep-rooted inside the hair.

A hair drug test can detect the following drugs:  Amphetamines, Barbiturates, Benzodiazepines, Cocaine, Marijuana (THC), Methadone, Methamphetamines, Opiates (Codeine & Morphine), Phencyclidine and Propoxyphene.

The most common types of tests on the market include a 14-panel, 12-panel, 10-panel and 5-panel.  The number is simple:  It will tell you how many drugs the test will be able to detect.

The results of your test will be analyzed by a specialist, and these results will be sent to the company/person requesting it.  You can call and get the results as well.  During the testing, the hair will be cleansed using a special shampoo to make sure all contamination is gone.  The laboratory will then use enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay methodology to detect any presence of illicit drugs.

The results of hair follicle drug testing should be provided by a CAP accredited Laboratory.

Depending on the test, up to 100 strands of hair may be needed to get an accurate result.  If sending to a lab via the mail, most will ask that the hair is as thick as a shoelace tip.  Once the strands have been cut, it can be screened for more than five different drug classes.

What are the extra costs?

A 1.5-inch sample will provide a 90-day history of use.  An extra fee will be charged to go back farther.   The cost can go up to $2,000 depending on how far they go back.  It is possible, however, that a drug cannot be detected up to three years after use.

If you order a kit online, shipping charges may apply.  Keep in mind that most employers won’t allow you take the test at home.  Some kits may also charge an additional fee to have their lab analyze the results.  Pay close attention to the fine print before purchasing.

Tips to know:

Even if a patient hasn’t taken any sorts of drugs within the last three to six months, positive results can still show up on a test since some hair can show traces of a drug for up to a year.

If sending into a lab, be sure to see if they are accredited.

If your hair is too short, laboratories can also use body hair as an alternative.  Body hair, such as facial, underarm, or even pubic hair, is a suitable alternative.  If no hair is available, the lab may have to resort to an oral or fluid test.

Compared to other drug tests, a hair test is considered to show a longer detection period, and it also has the ability to show you when the drug was being used.

While there may be tricks to beat this test, the only way to do it is simply by shaving your entire body.  Don’t fall for the shampoo gimmicks or giving up drugs for 90 days prior to the test as some can detect it even further than 90 days.

Can you fail a drug test from second-hand smoke?  No.  Second-hand smoke won’t affect your test results.

How can I save money?

If a company requires this type of test, they will more than likely pay for it.

Those who want to take the test at home should compare at least three to five labs before choosing one.

How Much Does Baklava Cost?

Baklava is a type of dessert made with Phyllo dough, butter, nuts, and sugar.  Each layer of baklava is sweetened with a syrup that is absorbed through its layers, and it appears to be golden brown after baking.   Historically, this dessert is only prepared by wealthy families during special occasions; however, anybody who wants to eat it will be able to bake some at an affordable price.

How much does baklava cost?

On average, if you were to purchase it online, the price per package will be anywhere from $20 to $50 depending on how many pieces are in the package and the company/baker creating it.   For instance, this 28 to 30 piece baklava retails for $18 to $20, plus $7 to ship.  Plan on budgeting about $1 per piece.

At a local bakery, some sell baklava for $1 to $2.50 per piece.  This can depend on the bakery’s reputation and geographical location.

Baklava overview

Baklava can be found in many Greek and Middle Eastern restaurants and bakeries.

The basic ingredients will include phyllo bread, which is a flat bread, nuts, syrup and/or honey.  Pay close attention to the nuts and syrup ingredients being used as this can tell you the origination of the recipe.  Syrup with cardamom is said to come from Arab countries, while syrup with cloves and/or cinnamon are said to come from the Balkan peninsula.

The average shelf life is 14 days; however, it can be refrigerated up to 45 days.  If frozen, it can retain its freshness for up to 120 days.

For a generic baklava, one two-by-one piece will have 330 calories, 23 grams of fat, 36 mg of cholesterol, 290 mg of sodium, 29 grams of carbs, 10 grams of sugar, five grams of protein and 2 grams of dietary fiber.

What is baklava?

Baklava is made from a Phyllo dough, nuts, butter and sugar.  Once baked, a sweet syrup is poured on top, allowing it to soak into its layers.  It’s a Mediterranean dessert known to go as far back as the 8th century B.C. because, during this time, Assyrians were known to bake thin layers of dough with nuts and poured honey over it.  It was only made on occasion since, at the time, only the rich could afford this dish.

What are the extra costs?

Purchasing online can often incur additional shipping costs.

Tips to know:

Phyllo dough, a dough that is used to make Baklava, can be found at many local grocery stores.  Generally, you will want to check the refrigerated section of your grocery store to find it.  Keep in mind that it can dry out rather fast if you don’t refrigerate it fast enough.

Try adding nuts, such as almonds, walnuts, and pistachios, to add more flavor.

Common spices found in this dish includes cinnamon, cloves and even cardamom.

thebaklavaguy.com notes the Americanized version is often sweeter than in other parts of the world.

If purchasing online, it’s best to see what other purchasers said.  While some sellers may have a lot of good reviews, pay attention to the bad as well to see what they are saying.

How Much Does Baking Powder Cost?

Baking powder is one of the necessary ingredients to stock in a kitchen.  This is a raising agent that is commonly used in baking cakes and bread, and types of baking powder can include double-acting baking powders and single acting baking powders.

Baking powder” (CC BY 2.0) by  Mel B.

How much does baking powder cost?

A simple baking powder container found at a local grocery store can cost $1.50 to $4 per 10-ounce container.  The price will depend on the quantity, brand and where it’s purchased.

For example, the best seller on Amazon.com — Calumet Baking Powder — retails for about $2.

Bulk baking powder, often sold in five-pound bags, can cost about $7 to $15.  At webstaurantstore.com, for instance, a five-pound container of double acting baking powder retails for $12.50.

Baking powder overview

What does baking powder do?  Baking powder will consist of a combination of baking soda, cream of tartar and some sort of moisture absorber, such as cornstarch, so it doesn’t react until liquid is added to it.  Most baking soda on the market today will be labeled as double-acting, which means it will react to both the liquid and heat; this will happen in two stages, hence the name.  The first reaction takes place when the liquid is added while mixing it in.  When the liquid reacts, it will create carbon dioxide gas, which helps the gas cells rise in the batter when being baked in the oven.

What are the extra costs?

If you order the baking powder online, you may have to spend extra for shipping if you don’t meet the retailer’s minimum.

Tips to know:

Baking powder should always be mixed with dry ingredients before adding any liquid.  Once the liquid added, a chemical reaction will take place, creating carbon dioxide to increase the consistency and size.

It may be best to avoid baking powder that comes in cardboard containers because oftentimes, the baking soda can be dead before it’s even able to be used.  As most bakers know, baking soda that is dead won’t work.

Be sure to test baking powder before using it.  A simple trick is to mix a teaspoon of the powder, followed by a half cup of water.  If it starts to bubble up, it’s going to be good.

Too much baking powder can often taste bitter, so it’s important to follow the directions closely.  It can also cause the batter to rise too fast, causing it to collapse.   On the other hand, if there’s too little baking powder, the batter will be too tough and will crumble when you pick it up.

Is baking powder the same as baking soda?  Baking powder does contain baking soda as it’s a mixture of the baking soda, cream of tartar and sometimes cornstarch.  While it isn’t the same, it can be used in recipes that call for an acidic ingredient since the baking soda can still act as a leavening agent.

Baking powder to baking soda

If you want to use baking powder instead of baking soda, here’s what you will need to do:  As a rule of thumb, use two to three times more baking powder than what’s called for baking soda.  If the recipe is calling for 2 teaspoons, you will want to use at least six.  This will not have an effect on the taste.

How can I save money?

Buying in bulk can cost less than buying individual packs at local grocery stores.  With our example above, a five-pound bag can cost $2 to $3 more, but you will get four times the amount.

Be sure to check for coupons or promotions to see what kind of deals are out there.  Many major brands will put coupons on their website or even Facebook page.

Store brands will have the same ingredients as the name brand, but it can cost up to 40 percent less.

How Much Does Baking Soda Cost?

Baking soda has a variety of uses such as acting as a leavening agent in baking and as a prime ingredient in cleansing agents.  It can also be used to scour and lift the dirt that sits on fabric, and it can also neutralize substances that may cause stains and smells.

How much does baking soda cost?

On average, a basic 16-ounce box found at your local grocery store can cost anywhere from $0.65 to $3 per box.

Some brands such as Bob’s Red Mill will be more expensive than another popular brand, such as Arm and Hammer, because it will be mined directly from the ground in its natural state with no chemicals added to it.  If the baking soda isn’t mined in its natural state, the company will use a chemical reaction to process where trona ore is mined and heated to create a soda ash.  This soda ash will be treated with carbon dioxide to create the baking soda.

A four-pound pack of baking soda will cost about $5.

A 60-ounce pack may cost anywhere from $30 to $40.

Baking powder overview

What does baking powder do?  Baking soda is just sodium bicarbonate, and that’s it.  With baking, in order to do its job, it will need an acidic component, such as yogurt, vinegar or lemon juice.  When these acidic properties are mixed with baking soda, it will create bubbles, forming carbon dioxide.  In turn, it will raise your baked good, making it tender.

Baking soda is widely used for all sorts of reasons.  Considered nature’s best cleaner, baking soda can be used to bake a cake, clean your teeth, clean a car’s battery and even neutralize pet and smoke odors.

Common ingredients include Sodium Bicarbonate and it may contain traces of milk, eggs, walnuts, peanuts, soy, and wheat.  This will depend on the brand.

Baking soda has an indefinite shelf life, but to test it, you can do the following:  Pour three tablespoons of white distilled vinegar and a teaspoon of baking soda into a bowl.  While stirring, it should bubble rapidly to show it’s fresh.

What are the extra costs?

Buying the baking soda online may not include shipping costs.

Tips to know:

Baking soda in the fridge is not only going to help with odors, but it’s also going to remove any excess moisture that is in the home.

If there is a room with a lot of moisture, place baking soda in the bowl.  It can almost work like a humidifier.

Baking soda can work great with stains such as markers and even grease that is on the bottom of a pan.  To clean this grease, fill the pot half full of water, along with two tablespoons of baking soda, and bring to a boil.

Baking soda is a great item to deodorizer to use to keep things clean such as a refrigerator or even a closet.  It is also used in many baking recipes, such as cookies and brownies.

To use as a cleaner, combine four tablespoons with one quart of water to create a mixture.  Apply it to a no-scratch sponge and wipe down any dirty surface.

Experts recommend replacing a baking soda box in your refrigerator every two months.  Also be sure to stir it every 14 days to expose fresh soda.

Use to deodorize your cat’s litter.  Simply sprinkle a pinch over the litter, and repeat when necessary.

A common misconception often found online is that baking soda contains aluminum.  This isn’t true.  Regardless of what it says on the packaging, people often confuse baking soda with baking powder, which can have aluminum.   Baking soda contains sodium bicarbonate, which comes from soda ash, and as mentioned above, this can either come naturally or via a chemical process.

Baking soda vs. baking powder

Baking soda is a base mineral, and when it’s added with some acidic, it will produce carbon dioxide.  This ingredient is called for in recipes that need the dough to rise or to add more of a crisp.  It can last forever, and it can be used for other uses, such as cleaning carpets, getting rid of odors and even unclogging drains.

Baking powder is a combination of baking soda and another acid, which is usually cornstarch.  With this powder, when water is added, the soda and acid will create the carbon dioxide, giving it the lift in recipes.  There are two types of baking powder on the market:  single-acting and double-acting.  A single-acting powder will react when you combine with another liquid, while double reacting will work when liquid is added and when it’s heated.

How can I save money?

Buying in bulk can often bring the cost down.

Companies who manufacture baking soda often have coupons readily available.  These can be found online and via their social media channels.

Store brands will often be cheaper than the name brand.  For example, Walmart’s Great Value brand retails for $0.62, while Arm and Hammer can cost three times more.

The price of the dairy cow can vary depending on the breed, the age and the geographical location you plan on buying the cow from.  The economy and local markets can greatly affect the price as well.  Dairy cows tend to be the most expensive breed available today.  With that being said, a dairy cow will usually cost anywhere between $700 to $3,000.  Older milking cows are priced lower than the younger ones.  Dairy cows around five years old, for example, may cost $1,800 to $3,000.

According to theprairiehomestead.com, she noted a dairy cow was about $900 to $3,000 in her part of the country.

Dairy cows overview

There are different cow breeds that are able to produce milk.  These common breeds include the Holsteins and Brown Swiss.  Holsteins are known to be used in the commercial industry and can supply a large quantity of milk.  A Brown Swiss, on the other hand, is one of the oldest breeds and are known more for a homesteader since its quality is quite low.  Its milk is also known to be much richer when compared to other breeds.  Other breeds include the Ayrshire, Busa, Canadienne, Dairy Shorthorn, Dexter, Guernsey, Illawarra, Irish Moiled, Jersey, American Milking Devon, Milking Shorthorn, Norwegian Red and Red Poll.

Regardless of the breed, you should be able to get at least three gallons of milk per day.

Between feeding and replenishing the water trough, plan on spending at least 15 to 35 minutes per day to take care of one cow.

How long do dairy cows live?  The average cow can live 18 to 23 years if taken care of properly.

When purchasing, transferring the cow from their location to your location may be included, but this will depend on the seller.

What are the extra costs?

If the seller won’t handle the transportation cost, then you will be responsible.  The transportation fees will depend on the distance traveled.

How much does it cost to feed a dairy cow?  This will all depend on how large your pasture is and the type of hay you plan on feeding your cow.  For every cow, plan on feeding it at least 30 pounds of hay, which again, depending on your geographical area, this could cost about $175 per ton (2,000 pounds).  Using the 30 pounds per day, $175 could last you about two months.  It could be much more if they don’t have a field to graze in.

While cows can roam and live on their own, they tend to do better with other cattle.  Again, while optional, you may want to consider budgeting for two.

Tips to know

Ideally, you should have about two to four acres per cow for pasture space.

Remember, in order for a cow to produce milk, it needs to have a baby first.  Most farmers will breed their cows at least once per year to keep the lactation cycle fresh; however, this isn’t necessary as having one baby can get the cycle going.  How long are cows pregnant?  For most breeds, it will be about 287 days.

If you’re thinking about selling your milk, check your local laws to make sure you’re able to do so.  Many states prohibit those who sell raw milk.

How can I save money?

Buying from a seller nearby can help save you in transportation costs.

It is also cost efficient to buy a dairy cow breed known to produce larger quantities and higher quality milk.

There may bee ranch owners who are willing to sell their dairy cow at a package price; this means the more cows you buy, the more discounts you will receive.

Consider going to a local auction.  Many farmers swear by this as this is the best place to get a dairy cow at the lowest price.  Auctions tend to draw in fewer people, leading to lower bid rates.   If considering this route, it never hurts to check for some that are more than 90 miles away as you may find that the gas prices alone can offset the bid price.

How Much Does Valet Parking Cost?

How much does valet parking cost?

Valet services, in general, are going to charge the party based on how many people will be attending as well as the size of the party.  Other factors that will be included in the pricing will be the insurance the company must provide, the time of the day, and the time of the week.  Peak seasons can generally cost more as well.   On average, the valet service is going to charge anywhere from $15 to $40 per hour, per attendant.

Valet parking companies will generally require one valet attendant per 30 to 50 guests.  If you’re going to have a party of 300, for example, five to six attendants will be needed, making the total around $200 to $450 per hour.  You would want to multiply the length of your party and this should offer an idea what you should be able to budget.

When traveling to a hotel, airport or a restaurant, the cost will be up to $30.  Some places, however, offer the service free of charge.  Most hotels and airport are going to charge, while your restaurants are going to just require a tip.    For example, the Orlando International Airport charges $25 for valet parking.

Sporting events generally command higher prices.  At a baseball game, basketball game, or any other professional sporting event, valet parking can be as much as $75.

Valet parking overview

A professional company will supply all the attendants as well as the protocol to ensure that your event runs smoothly.  Most companies will run the proper background check to ensure that the workers meet company policy.

A good company should offer general liability insurance and workers compensation.  This will vary between companies, so it’s important to know what kind of coverage you will get.  Most companies won’t cover theft, vandalism and weather-related damage.

A valet is going to allow you to leave your car at the entrance where it will be taken and parked for you.  He or she will then bring your car back to the door when you are ready to leave.

Valet services will often cater to weddings, private dinners, special events, charity outings and corporate events.

What are the extra costs?

How much to tip valet parking? While optional, most valet attendants are going to expect a tip.  On average, a tip should be $2 to $6, depending on the situation.  If the weather is bad, and the valet has to go far, then a higher tip may be necessary.  If the attendant doesn’t have to travel far, then a smaller tip may be acceptable.

Tips to know

Most car manufacturers create a valet key.   Be sure to give the valet this special key since it can only start the car and won’t be able to open the glove box.

When choosing a valet service, know the company.  Be sure to check references and ask about the company’s background.  Also, create a list ahead of time and make sure this company will be able to meet the demands.

How can I save money?

If valet services are optional, then skip it.  Most of the time, the parking in the area is going to be a lot cheaper than having someone take the car for you.

Most professional services will offer discounts to those that book multiple events.

Compare at least 3 companies if you’re going to hire a service to host your wedding.  The more quotes you get, the more you’re going to be able to save.  When comparing, make sure that these valet workers are going to have a background check performed on them.  The last thing that you want is to have items stolen from inside the vehicle.
