How much do acrylic nails cost?

Those who want to purchase fake nails in bulk can pay as little as $13 to $19 for a pack of 500 nails.  A pack of 200 that has designs on it, such as butterflies and stars, will cost anywhere from $14 to $30 per 200.   A french nail set, for example, that comes in a pack of two will vary anywhere from $10 to $15.  This will be for the nails only and won’t include a professional.  To do the job yourself, it probably won’t cost more than $5 to $10.

For those who want to get the job done professionally at a salon will pay about $25 to as much as $55 to have a full set applied.  The cost will depend on their expertise, the type of design/art, type of job, the quality of the nails and how much of the nail that has to be done.

French tip acrylic nails, for example, can cost about $40 per set at a decent salon.

Bestacrylicnails.com says a simple and natural job will see an average charge, but if you want a blend of colors with additional materials, the costs can be between $50 to $80.  They also note that french tips, stiletto nails, solar nails and special designs can cost more.

Acrylic nails overview

These nails will be applied to your existing nails using a primer or glue-like substance.  Compared to the gel nail process, the curing time may be slower.  As long as these nails are applied properly, there shouldn’t be any damage done to the nails.

A salon is going to replace your old nails with the newer ones you pick out.  Some salons may allow you to bring in your own nails, while others may require you purchase them in their salon.  During the job, they will also file your nails down, apply them and provide any other necessary maintenance if required.

A full set can be applied in less than 45 to 60 minutes.

Fake nails that are purchased as a kit will come equipped with a set of nails.  Depending on the brand, some kits may come with additional nails just in case one breaks.

How long do acrylic nails last?  About two weeks.  Once your nails start to grow out, your acrylics will grow out as well, increasing the odds of damaging them.

How they do acrylic nails

What are the extra costs?

Some salons may charge to remove the old nails or even nail polish.

Some salons may also require that you get a full manicure package.  All salons will have its own policy.

Choosing a better-branded nail at the salon can be $10 to $15 more than the basic brand they use.

Extra nail lengths may see a $10 to $15 surcharge.

A gel polish can cost an additional $10 to $15.

According to eHow.com., for those doing the job themselves, nail polish remover, nail glue, a file and a hair dryer will be necessary to complete the job at home.

Don’t forget the tip.  While not necessary, most tip upwards of 30 percent.

xovain.com recommends getting your fills at least once a month.  Failing to do so can often lead to some nasty infections, especially if you don’t take care of them.  Refills will cost about $10 to $20 per sitting.

If you want to remove acrylic nails in the future at a salon, it can cost about $7 to $15.  During this process, they will soak your fingernails in an acetone-based solution for about 10 minutes.  Once soft enough, they will use a file to remove it.  For those who don’t want to use acetone to remove their nails, other methods can be used such as using a laminated business card, dental floss or filing them down.

Tips to know:

Nail glue can be rather sticky.  Be sure to be careful with it as it can stick to things and destroy items such as carpet and furniture.

Fake nails can ruin the real nails below if kept on for a long time.

Once your nails are applied, keep your nails as clean as possible to prevent infections.  Make it a habit of washing your hands all the time.

Skin contact should be avoided to potentially prevent an allergic reaction.

Can you paint over acrylic nails?  You’re able to paint the nail; however, in some cases, it may not show up evenly like it would on your natural nails.  Because of this, your white tips may still be visible once you’re done painting.

How to take care of acrylic nails

Always keep your nails as dry as possible.  Wear gloves while doing the dishes and after washing your hands, be sure to dry as best as you can.

Use an antibacterial soap.  Since your nails can lure in unwanted bacteria, it’s best to use an antibacterial soap.

If you see a chip or any problem, get it looked at as fast as you can.  Doing so can often get it fixed and the salon will do it for a minimal charge if you come back fast enough.

As mentioned above, go back to the salon to have your nails refilled.  This will help reduce the risk of infection and keep your nails shining.

Pay close attention to the cuticles.  If you notice any severe dryness or redness, your skin may be reacting to the nails.

To prevent dryness, try to use lotion daily.

How can I save money?

Applying nails yourself isn’t a hard task at all.  Gather up a friend and apply the nails together.  By doing this, it can save you $15 to $35.

Head to a salon in a group, or keep your eyes peeled on deal websites, such as Groupon, where you can find discounted deals that can save you up to 50%.

If you don’t care about the appearance of the nails, consider heading to a local dollar store.

If applying the nails yourself, consider purchasing a complete kit that will come with the glue, nails and everything else required in order to get the job done.

How Much Does Adobe Acrobat Cost?

Adobe Acrobat is a software application that allows you to manipulate PDF files and share them with others. It is a user-friendly application that comes with Adobe Acrobat Reader and can be purchased in professional or full versions.  Most individuals and businesses will often upgrade to a premium version when they want to fill out the forms and covert their PDFs.

How much does Adobe Acrobat cost?

Adobe offers two ways to purchase the software:  either via monthly subscription or by purchasing the stand-alone software versions.  Most businesses today, however, will choose the monthly option.

For the monthly versions, you can either pay $24.99 per month for the Pro DC version or $22.99 per month for the Standard DC version.  However, if you purchase it annually, the prices will drop to $14.99 and $12.99 per month respectively.

Adobe Acrobat X Pro can retail for about $400 and won’t have recurring fees.  However, keep in mind this software may not be able to work with today’s technology.

Acrobat XI Pro, an older version, can be found for about $90 to $120.

Acrobat X Standard, another older version, can retail for about $185 and won’t have recurring fees.

Adobe Acrobat overview

Both the Pro and Standard DC versions will offer the following features:  able to turn scanned documents into PDFs; can export PDFs into Office files and/or images; can fill in and sign forms on a mobile device; and the ability to send and track documents online.  The Pro version will also include the ability to edit from your iPad, and it will meet ISO and accessibility standards.  Essentially, this software allows you to interact, create, edit, sign, collect and access PDFs.

If purchasing a monthly subscription, you will be able to use it on two computers.  You will need to create an Adobe account in order to access your software.

Tips to know

If you bypass the monthly option and outright purchase the software, you won’t be able to upgrade to a newer version in the future.  While it may not sound like a problem today, Adobe is known to not upgrade older versions, leaving it useless.  Monthly subscriptions, on the other hand, will assure you your software will always be up to date and will always work with your day-to-day work.

How can I save money?

Teachers and students are offered discounts when buying Adobe Acrobat Professional, provided they meet the eligibility criteria; however, a student or teacher is entitled to one product only.

Adobe Acrobat isn’t the only option on the market.   PC World lists five alternatives that are cheaper and can offer similar features.  These packages include PDFescape, CutePDF Professional 3.7, PDF-Xchange Editor 3.0, Qoppa PDF Studio 8 Pro and Nitro Pro 9.

The Adobe Reader can be downloaded for free.  This will be required to read the PDF files, and this software can be downloaded on all operating systems, including iPhone and Android.

By prepaying up front for the year, you can save at least $10 per month.

Acrobat XI is often bundled with new software.  Brucebnews.com, for example, says XI Standard can be purchased for $50 if you purchase a new Optiplex desktop computer.

Most businesses will be just fine with the standard versions.  However, just to make sure you don’t need the professional versions, you should use this comparison tool to be certain.

How Much Do Acrylic Bathtub Liners Cost?

If your tub or shower is in need of repair, one of the easiest fixes is an acrylic liner.  This is a quick solution that refinishes your bathtub and shower without necessarily reconstructing or replacing the entire tub.  A custom fit mold made of thick acrylic will cover the old existing tub and will make the tub area appear new again.

How much do acrylic bathtub liners cost?

On average, the overall cost of acrylic bathtub liners can be anywhere from $1,000 to $4,000 depending on the liner, brand, style and what you want to be included.   To purchase the liner without using a professional, the costs will be about $1,000 to $1,500, depending on the brand you choose.

Miraclemethod.com tells us an acrylic liner can cost about $1,300; however, if you were to add a wall system and soap dish, the costs can get closer to $4,000.

Acrylic bathtub liners overview

An acrylic bathtub liner will be molded to fit your bathtub size.  To put it in simple terms:  it’s a cover that covers the original tub to create a look of plastic.  Most liners will be made from  ABS acrylic, the same material used to create football helmets.

Most liners will be about a 1/4-th inch thick and will rarely affect the tub’s size.

A contractor will usually come to the home and create a mold for the bathtub.  He or she will do this by measuring the tub and sending this information to the manufacturer you’re working with.   Depending on the company, it can take anywhere from two to four weeks to receive your mold.

Once this mold has been created, the old liner or part of the tub will be removed.  To install the new liner, a strong industrial glue will be used to glue the new liner over the existing tub and/or wall.  This process can be done in a day.

Since these liners can come in a variety of options, you will have the freedom to select the colors and designs.

Popular brands include Bath Fitters and Rebath.

Those who want to do it on their own can find liners at popular home improvement stores such as Lowe’s and Home Depot.

What are the extra costs?

Every accessory you would like to be added during the installation will be an additional expense if it isn’t included with the mold.  For example, adding accessories, such as a soap dish or wall system, can increase the price by more than 50 percent.

Removing an older bathtub liner can be an additional cost.  Some contractors will include this in their quote while others won’t.

Tips to know:

If hiring to have someone install a new acrylic bathtub liner, you’re going to want to make sure that you hire a professional plumber.  It’s best to note that they are insured and certified to perform the job correctly.  An improper install can lead to leaks or even water accumulation in between the tub, which can lead to cracks and mold.

Most liners are going to have a limited color selection.  If possible, bring some samples home to match them up to your current tub.  This will give you a good idea of what’s going to look good.

A liner won’t solve water problems you had before.  If you have any water problems, this liner will trap the water between the layers, making thing worse.

Once the liner is installed, there will be virtually no maintenance required.   It’s also a substance that will last a very long time when compared to other materials.  Disadvantages, however, can include moisture being trapped between the layers, causing bacteria to build up, and in some cases, it may cause a narrower bathtub since this new liner will be placed on top of the older one.

If taken care of properly, a good liner can last up to 20 years.

Acrylic liners are known to hold heat better than porcelain.

How can I save money?

Consider getting multiple quotes from contractors services such as HomeAdvisor.com.  Here, you can explain your situation and contractors will e-mail their quotes for free.

There are special kits on the market that allow to “paint” over your tub, such as Rustoleum recolor, making it appear new.  However, most experts recommend against this strategy since it can give you tub a painted look rather than a refinished look.

Using a liner instead of replacing a bathtub is already consider a cost efficient method. Since removing a bathtub and installing a new one could cost thousands, a liner could be done for less than $2,000 if you choose a simple setup.

How much does hair coloring cost at the salon?

Each salon has different styles and methods of dyeing hair, so the costs will vary.  It will also depend on your geographical location, the number of colors you want, the length of your hair and the salon/stylist you choose.  For just the hair coloring, you should be prepared to pay $45 to $115.  These costs could be much higher if you were to choose a reputable salon in a major city.  Timeout.com, for example, showcased many New York City salons and the charges.  Also, be prepared to spend this at least every three to five weeks.  We called up a few salons in our area and came up with the quotes below.

On this Reddit AskWomen thread, one paid $150 for highlights, a color, haircut and tip, while another paid $200 to $250 at a higher-end salon.

Ulta Beauty Supply, which has its own salon, charges anywhere from $45 and beyond.  This will depend on the method you choose.

Cost Cutters, a franchise-based salon, states it charges $55 or more for a color.

Hair coloring at the salon overview

Before you get your hair colored, the stylist will meet with you to discuss your needs.  During this time, you will show them what you want in terms of your color.  This can be done either via a photo or simply explaining the technique.  With this information, a stylist will be able to recommend his or her opinion and show you which colors could work best for your skin tone, face shape and hair color.

Most jobs should take as little as 60 minutes to complete.

What are the extra costs?

Longer and thicker hair may mean extra charges.

Adding highlights or lowlights could add 20 to 30 percent to the price.  Adding more than one color, such as the pinwheel hair color technique, can increase the price as well.

Most hair stylists expect to be tipped for any services they provide.  This tip should be five to 20 percent of the total bill.

To keep up to date with most colors, stylists recommend coming in every three to four weeks for a touch-up.

Expert stylists will highly recommend you change your shampoo and conditioner to maintain your color, especially if it’s your first time.  Plan on spending at least $20 to $40 for a combination of these products.

Tips to know:

Consider going with highlights rather than a full hair color.

For those who have gray hair, most experts are going to state that blonde is going to be the best color to choose since it is easier to apply.

If this is the first time you’re working with a stylist, consider booking a consultation appointment ahead of time.  During this time, you can discuss the color, shade and what you want in general.  It will also give you a good idea on how long the procedure will probably take.

Don’t know what kind of color you want?  Consider browsing popular hair style Instagram accounts or hairstyle apps for inspiration.  When you do find something you like, be sure to bookmark and show it to your stylist.  It’s a lot easier to show a picture instead of trying to explain what you want.

Cosmopolitan recommends applying a hair mask to your hair the day before your color to prep it for the coloring process.

To protect your hair from fading, try not to expose it to the sun as often.  It’s also best to protect it from salt and pool water.

Is dying your hair bad?  While coloring your hair isn’t considered dangerous, there are some ingredients you should look out for.  Formaldehyde and coal tar, for example, are two potentially harmful components that you should avoid.  Also, ammonia and para-phenylenediamine are ingredients some experts will tell you to avoid as they may cause itching or blistering.

Should I wash my hair before I dye it?  Most experts recommend you don’t wash your hair and leave it dirty instead.  Cleaning your hair ahead of time may cause the shampoo to react with your color, potentially causing a burning effect.

How to know what color to dye your hair?  Take the hair color quiz to find out.

How can I save money?

Check with a local cosmetology school.  Those who are learning to work with hair dye may be able to do your hair color much cheaper.  Don’t worry as they will be supervised by a professional stylist.  If you want to learn how to color hair, this video can show you step by step instructions.

If you feel comfortable doing the job on your own, a box of hair dye can cost about $5 to $30.

Those who are new to the salon should check their official website to see if any promotions or coupons are available.  Many salons often offer lucrative deals to those who haven’t been there before.  This is a great way to save 10 percent or more.

How Much Does Gamma Knife Surgery Cost?

Gamma Knife® surgery has been globally established as the preferred treatment for brain tumors, malformations, and dysfunctions.  It is referred to as a stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS).  It offers a non-invasive substitute for numerous patients who cannot consider traditional brain surgery.

How much does Gamma Knife® surgery cost?

The cost of the Gamma Knife® procedure is 25% to 30% less than traditional neurosurgery.  The lack of an incision in this procedure eliminates the risk of severe blood loss and infection, and unlike other methods, patients will only experience slight discomfort and can resume previous activities within 24 hours.  On average,  the ballpark price range will be anywhere from $20,000 to $60,000, which is less when compared to open surgery, which can start at $35,000 or more.  These are all prices for those who don’t have a health insurance plan.

Those who have health insurance may want to consult with their insurance company as you will find the procedure could be covered under your plan.

According to an NCBI study,  the average 12-month costs of treating brain metastases, acoustic neuromas, and AVM with GKRS were USD$23,069, $37,840, and $46,293.

Gamma Knife® surgery overview

Gamma Knife surgery is a precise and effective procedure that uses radiation to help treat the brain.  By using this method, doctors are able to focus on the radiation directly, targeting the brain without having to worry about affecting the surrounding healthy tissue.  The unique thing about this procedure is that there is no incision or blood, making it less risky compared to the traditional surgeries.

This surgery can help with malignant tumors, malignant gliomas, benign tumors, vascular malformations, ocular disorders and functional disorders.

During the procedure, a radiation oncologist will use 3D computer images to target multiple beams of radiation directly into the tumor.  The surgery delivers 192 precisely focused beans to small targets inside the brain.  The procedure, depending on the severity, will last anywhere from one to four hours.  Depending on the final outcome, more than one procedure will be needed.  Recovery should take about 24 to 48 hours.

Before the procedure begins, a local anesthesia will be administered and a stereotactic frame will be attached to the patient’s head.  Once attached, the patient’s head will be imaged using either an MRI or CT scanner.  With these results, the professionals will be able to create a treatment plan developed by specialized software.  This plan will determine the gamma-ray dosage and the location of the brain where the treatment will be administered.  The patient will lie on the Gamma Knife unit treatment bed and the process will begin.  Depending on the treatment, if more than one sessions is needed, the patient will be able to rest in between sessions to allow the doctors to make minor adjustments.  After the surgery is done, the patient will be able to go home and will come in for a follow-up appointment in the near future.

A patient won’t see or even feel any radiation and the only discomfort a patient may feel is when a local anesthetic is applied prior to the procedure.  Patientsconsciousonsicious for this procedure.

This procedure will be done on an outpatient basis and no hospital stay will be required.

The effects of this procedure won’t be instant; instead, it could take years for it to complete.  Understand this procedure won’t remove the growth, but it will change the cell DNA so it can’t produce anymore.

Common side effects include scalp swelling, skin irritation, headaches, nausea, brain swelling, necrosis and hair loss.

What are the extra costs?

A post-treatment follow-up is essential to observe the progress.  This is beyond the price quotation noted above for the treatment.  Hence, an additional fee may be charged unless the physician chooses to do it pro-bono and include it in the original quote.

Specialist fees are most likely separate from what you pay for the procedure since they usually base the professional fee on the severity of the treatment as well as the duration.  The more sessions you need to finish the surgery, the higher the amount may be.  This could include hospital or anesthesiologist fees.  All hospitals will have its own billing policies.

Tips to know

This procedure has many benefits.  It’s bloodless, it’s painless and it won’t result in hair loss.  It also has well-documented clinical studies for many brain diseases and disorders.  This surgery, when compared to other forms of radiation, directly targets an area instead of the adjacent brain tissue.  For most patients, they will only need a one-day treatment, not a treatment session that lasts weeks.  It’s also a good option for those who have tried other methods and have failed.

To determine if you’re a suitable candidate for this procedure, a doctor will look at your medical history and previous imaging studies.  While most doctors will refer their patients for this type of surgery, some patients may self-refer themselves.

The surgery is often done in conjunction with other surgeries, radiation therapy and chemotherapy.

More than 60,000 patients get this surgery annually.

Unlike other treatments, your head won’t be shaved for the surgery.

How can I save money?

This surgery is extremely cost-effective and usually reimbursed fully by most, if not all, insurance plans and Medicare.  Check with your insurance company to see if it’s covered.

Studies have shown this surgery is less expensive than conventional neurosurgery because it eliminates hospital stays, medication and rehabilitation sessions.

How Much Does a Hall Rental Cost?

When you want to hold a large birthday party, retirement party, or even a wedding, you may need to rent a hall in order to entertain all of your guests.  Renting of a hall will also allow you to enjoy the party more instead of constantly working at the party or messing up your home.  Whether you want to rent a hall at the local VFW or maybe even a local building, the cost of renting a hall will vary.

How much are hall rental prices?

On average, most halls are going to charge for simple setups.  This is going to include tables, chairs, electricity and access to a kitchen or bar.  This can cost anywhere from $50 to $600 per hour.  The cost will depend on the geographical location, the type of hall being rented, time of year, time of week, the amenities and your demands.  We looked up popular hall rentals in the United States and were able to get a ballpark estimate in our table below.

For example, a VFW hall will cost anywhere from $50 to as much as $300 per hour, depending on the location.  Most halls are going to demand a higher price tag on the weekends since they are in greater demand.  Also, keep in mind that most are going to want a two to four hour minimum in order to book the hall.

Some halls will charge per person rather than per hour.  For example, hotels with conference centers can cost as much as $20 to $60 per person.  For a 100 person, four to six-hour party, the hotel conference room can cost as much as $6,000.  Some hotels will include catering, open bars and more.  Results are going to highly vary.

Churches are often another venue people use to rent their hall.  Depending on the church and its size, the costs can vary anywhere from as little as a donation of your choice to more than $800 for the night.  Forum members on catholic.com noted their church often asked for a donation.

VenuePrice
Brazos Hall Rentalstarting at $1,500 to $3,000 (depends on day)
Carnegie HallIsaac Stern Auditorium: base rate of $14,000
Zankel Hall: base rate of $4,500
Weill Recital Hall: base rate of $1,750
Cedar Lake$400
Copley Symphony Hall$500
Crown Point Indiana Hall$2,000 to $5,000
Fort Langley Community Hall Rental$700~
James P. Davis Hall Rental$425 to residents
San Marco Preservation Hall$100 per hour
St Lawrence Hall Rental$2,500~ depending on season

What is going to be included in the estimates?

Some halls will create packages that include the food, a wait staff and bartender.  These packages will be designed for themed events such as a wedding or graduation party.

Kitchen use, tables and chairs will more than likely be included.  Some halls will require that you have to set them up yourself.  Some may include a projector, screen, use of audio equipment and lighting equipment.

Most of your smaller VFW halls can accommodate around 100 to 200 people; this will depend on the location.

What are the extra costs?

Food, alcohol and drinks are going to have to be supplied by the party attending, or if the hall includes it, this will be a separate charge.  If the hall doesn’t include the food, they will more than likely have connections to local caterers.  Keep in mind some counties/cities may not allow you to have alcohol in the hall at all.

Music and entertainment will need to be factored in.

Some halls have DJs, security guards, and bartenders available for hire.  Most of these add-ons are going to start at $25 per hour.  Waitresses and waiters can also be hired for the night.

Halls are going to charge fees on top of the hourly rate.

All halls will require a security deposit.  This deposit is going to protect the hall from any damage that is done.   If damage is done, this security deposit may be kept.  The deposit is anywhere from 50-100% of the total cost.

Tips to know

If the hall includes a bar, they may ask for a minimum purchase in order to provide it.

Know the time restrictions as most halls will want you to leave before a certain time.

Read the contract carefully as there may be hidden fees.

How can I save money?

Shop around your town.  Check with local VFW halls, hotels and local churches.  Talk with at least three venues before signing a contract.

Try to haggle with some venues as many will bring the price down if the time of the year is slow.

Pick a time of the year when a lot of other people aren’t booking.  Also, consider having the party on a weekday.  This can save up to 50%.

Check with local churches in the area.  Many churches have rooms which can be used for these purposes and may be quite cheaper than halls.  However, most churches will require that you or someone you know is a member of the church.

How Much Does Halibut Cost?

Halibut is a flatfish that is part of the flounder family and is generally found in the northern Pacific and northern Atlantic ocean.  Although these fish average 20 to 30 pounds, the largest one ever recorded was 734 pounds, making it the largest of all saltwater flatfish.  The halibut can also grow up to eight feet long.

Because of its taste, halibut is highly regarded in countries such as the United States and Russia.

How much does halibut cost?

At a local fish market where the fish is caught daily, the price is going to range anywhere from $12 to as much as $21 per pound, depending on the season, the cut, the demand and geographical location.  Online seafood retailers could be double the cost.

Omaha Steaks, for example, sells a package of 12 six-ounce filets for $99 to $170.  These halibut steaks are pressurized and packaged for shipping.

Other seafood retailers may sell cheeks for about $20 to $26 per pound and smoked fillets for $30 to $40 per pound.  The whole halibut, without any work done to it, can be within that $12 to $21+ per pound range.  For instance, FreshSeafood.com sells its 25-pound whole halibut for about $18 per pound.

Forum members on Chow.com say they routinely pay around $20 per pound and anything over $30 per pound seems to be excessive.

Halibut overview

Most fresh fish markets may filet the fish and bag and wrap it to make sure it stays fresh.  Some markets may sell the fish as a whole, allowing you to do the filleting.   Most online seafood markets will fillet, debone and vacuum seal to preserve the freshness.

On the market, you will often find halibut cheeks, fillets, steaks or the fish as a whole.  Cheeks tend to be the most flavorful part of the fish and will be very tender.  Fillets will have a milder taste and flaky texture.  This tends to be the most popular option among most who cook it.  Steaks will also have a mild taste and flaky texture, but it will have a smokier flavor if cooked properly.

Halibut is low in sodium, it has no sugar and low in saturated fat.  It’s high in magnesium, niacin, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, vitamin B6 and B12.  A half of fillet will have about 380 calories.

The halibut taste is mild and sweet.  It tends to be lean, flaky and is best if purchased fresh from May to September.

Where to buy halibut?  Depending on where you live, it can be purchased via online seafood retailers, local seafood markets, wholesale clubs or grocery store chains.

What are the extra costs?

Shipping fees may apply with some online retailers since it has to be at your door within 24 hours.

Some sellers will prep the fish for easy cooking.  If you want a fillet that is already seasoned and ready to throw in the oven, it may cost 10 to 30 percent more.

Tips to know:

Common ways to cook halibut include baking, broiling, deep frying, grilling and pan frying.

For those who want to catch halibut, common baits that are used include herring, guts, octopus, and crabs.

Halibut prefer deep waters up to 300 feet deep and tend to hang around ledges and rocks.

Halibut stores for up to three days in a refrigerator.  If you plan on keeping it longer than three days, it’s best to store in a freezer.  Halibut in a freezer can last up to six months.  If you choose to freeze your halibut, wrap the vacuum sealed fish in aluminum foil and place it in a freezer bag for extra protection.

As a rule of thumb, if purchasing whole, one pound of fish should be able to feed one person.

Is halibut kosher?  Once the skin is removed, it’s next to impossible to identify, and therefore, it can’t be considered to be kosher.

How to prepare halibut

Baking

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.  Arrange the fillets in a well-oiled baking dish and wait for a slightly brown texture.

Broiling

Preheat the broiler and cut the halibut into pieces.  Baste with butter, top with bread crumbs and place in the broiling pan.  Allow it to broil for 15 minutes until the flakes come apart easily with a fork.

Pan frying

Dip pieces into milk or egg, then roll into flower.  Heat the frying pan until hot and carefully place pieces into skillet until a golden brown.

Poaching

Place fish in 190-degree water and cover.  Do not boil the fish and wait until the desired doneness.

How Much Does an Acre of Land Cost?

If you want to invest in real estate, specifically a parcel of land, there are prior considerations you should take concerning your budget and the knowledge of the cost per acre.

How much is an acre?

The geographical location is key with real estate.  An acre of land can cost as little as a few dollars to as much as a few million dollars.  The pricing is very hard to pinpoint unless you know exactly where you want to search.  Msn.com said New Jersey has the highest average at about $196,400 per acre.

Farmland, for example, can be between $5,000 to $8,000 per acre. There can be cheaper land in some locations with an average cost of around $1,000-$5,000 per acre, and these are areas that have no timber or structures.  In 2015, the average acre in the United States sold for $3,020.  The highest farm values were in the Corn Belt region, where land sold for $6,350 per acre.

Land with timber may vary according to the age of the timber.  This will cost about $3,000 per acre.

As for residential, land in largely undeveloped areas will be significantly less than land in highly developed areas were roads, housing and other structures are readily available.

Land appropriate for commercial building construction may sell at $10,000 an acre or even more, again, depending on the location.

According to this HouseRepairTalk.com forum thread, forum members stated that an acre of land in Nebraska can cost $8,000 per acre while an acre in Texas can cost upwards of $6,000.

The website LandWatch.com is a classified website that allows you to browse state and international properties.  On this website, you can search by city, the number of acres you want, the prices you’re willing to pay, and you can get a general idea of what it may cost.

The prices below are acreage prices by state.  Remember, this is an average.  This is based on farmland only via a USDA land value report.  Take this information with a grain of salt because you will find that all land spread across the United States within these states will vary a lot.

The USDA created a report showing us the average farm related value per acre.  This information is from 2011-2016.

Factors that affect the price:

Location

We all know that the geographical location is key in terms of real estate.  Land located in a high crime area will cost a lot less than land in an area high in demand such as Hawaii.

Size

Generally, the more acres you purchase, the more you can save.  This isn’t always the case, though.  Again, this is going to widely depend on where the land is located.

Type

There are a few different types of land available.  Popular types can include hunting, timberland, waterfront, farms, home sites and international.

What is going to be included in the estimates?

When you buy land, the timber, structures, and other developments are included unless stated differently in the purchasing contract.

Included in the price will be the recording deeds, mapping, regulatory permits, and other various paperwork related to the state you purchased the land in. However, this depends on the seller and the buyer-seller agreements.

How big is an acre of land?  Approximately 43,560 square feet.

What are the extra costs?

Property tax is one of the extra costs to consider.

Surveying may be included in the price or sometimes the buyer will have to add this as an extra cost.   A surveyor may also be needed before you purchase the land to test the soil.

Make sure you consider the cost of developing the land if this is your intention.

Building a home will obviously be an additional cost, but remember that all cities will more than likely require permits and approval before you build the home.

The cost of clearing land per acre can be anywhere from as little as $100 per acre with little vegetation to as much as $6,000 per acre with a lot filled with hundreds of mature trees.

Tips to know

While it’s common to purchase land with cash, a lender appraisal will be necessary if you want to secure a land loan.

Check the utilities before buying the land, especially if you plan on building on the lot.  Sometimes water rights won’t run with the land, and this means you won’t be able to dig a well.  Check the water table and determine the difficulty of digging.  Aside from water, what utilities are nearby?  Can you get cable services?  What about electricity?   If there’s no sewer available, what would a septic system cost?

If you can only access your land by going through an adjoining parcel, it’s important to have an easement recorded.  You will want to find out who maintains the road and what your neighbors have to do to access their land.  It’s always wise to obtain title insurance.

Pay close attention to the elevation, especially if building on a side of a cliff or near water.  If you were to build, are you in a flood zone?  Could there be a potential landslide?

Always check the zoning requirements to determine what kind of home you can build before committing to the land.

How can I save money?

The best way to save money on land purchases is by talking with a few local real estate agents.  Since these agents will know the area best, they may know of some land that meets your qualifications.

Don’t forget that you can negotiate on the price.  Almost all real estate transactions never sell for full price.

Try to look for types of land where you can save money, even if you will still incur extra costs down the road for the land developments and facilities.  Usually, developed areas are priced too high, and when you compare the amount you will spend in improving the land, you will find that you can get more savings by simply buying the already developed land.

Make lists of the possible expenses you may have and make comparisons; ask someone to help you figure out the best buy.

Check local tax assessor records or Zillow.com to see what land has sold for in the area.  By doing this, it will give you an idea of what the land may be worth.

LandCentury allows you to search vacant land for less than $1,000 per acre.

Acoustic guitars can be made from a solid wood, such as cedar, cocobolo, ebony, granadillo, koa, mahogany, maple, ovangkol, rosewood, sapele, spruce and walnut.   It can also be made from laminate, which will be composed of several layers.  Laminate tops won’t vibrate as well as solid wood, so the sound may not be as rich.

Guitar picks can cost about $2 to $5 for a pack of 12.

A tuner will be necessary to make sure that your guitar is tuned before it’s played.

Repairs may be necessary for the future.  For example, an acoustic guitar bridge repair can cost $100 to $200, while acoustic guitar crack repair can cost about $30 per inch.  Other repairs may include replacing worn frets, a bowed neck, replacing tuners or leveling frets.  Some of the pricier repairs, such as a neck reset, can start at $300.

Due to its size, some private sellers or retailers may charge for shipping.  If the guitar is shipped in a case, it can cost $50 to $100.

Tips to know:

When shopping, always make sure you try the model before you buy.  Even if you don’t play a lot, see how it feels and if you’re comfortable with it.  If you have been playing for a long time, you should be able to find a guitar that suits your needs just by picking it up.

How can I save money?

Watch out for the sales or promotions at your local music studio or retailer.

Look for package deals by purchasing acoustic guitars that include important accessories.

Look on eBay or Craigslist for second-hand acoustic guitars.  Oftentimes, players will upgrade and will provide you with all of their equipment at a low price.  If you do purchase used, however, be sure to pay close attention to the gaps, blemishes or scratches.

If you’re just starting out, consider renting one.  Most music shops charge about $20 to $30 per month.

How Much Does a Helium Tank Cost?

Helium tanks are often purchased for those who need enough helium to fill up a handful of balloons since it’s cheaper than renting and/or buying the balloons.  The cost of a tank will depend on the size of the helium tank, the brand and where you purchase it.

How much does a helium tank cost?

Most helium tanks purchased online are disposable and can fill about 50 to 100 balloons.  On average, a disposable tank is going to cost anywhere from $30 to $65.

For example, this disposable helium tank created by Worthington Cylinders costs around $35 to $60.  This disposable helium tank created by Giant Party Store costs about$40 to $52.

There are alternatives available which act like a helium tank, but the balloons generally don’t have as long.  For example, the Pumponator will cost $15 to $21.

Party City sells a 14.9 cubic foot tank for $55 and an 8.9 cubic foot tank for $45.

If you have to pump more than 100 balloons, it may be necessary to rent a helium tank from a local store.  Tank rentals are all going to vary depending on the cylinder size and who you’re renting it from.  The average rental will cost $55 to $200 for 24 to 48 hours.  A 20 cubic foot tank, which can fill about 50 balloons, will cost about $40 to rent, while a 125 cubic foot tank, which can inflate about 350 balloons, will cost around $95 to rent.

Helium tank overview

Tanks purchased at a local party store will often be 8.9 or 14.9 cubic feet.  A smaller 8.9 cubic foot tank will fill about 16 17-inch foil balloons, while a 14.9 cubic foot tank will fill 27 17-inch latex balloons.

Some kits may include the latex balloons and the ribbon, while others require you purchase it separately.  Be sure to read the label to see what’s included.

All tanks should be filled when you receive them and won’t have to be filled at a location.

These tanks can be purchased from stores, such as Target, Costco, Michael’s, Party City and JoAnn Fabrics.

What are the extra costs?

If you want to rent the helium tank, keep in mind that many companies will require a security deposit.  This deposit can be anywhere from $100 to $250.  This deposit will be returned once you bring the tank back.

If you want to have the tank delivered, charges may apply.  Delivery charges can range anywhere from $25 to $75.

If there is any damage done to the tank, most companies will require that the damages are covered by the renter.  More than likely, you won’t get your deposit back.

Latex balloons will have to be purchased separately.  Depending on the shape and size, each one can cost $1 to $3.

Tips to know:

Before even using the tank, always be sure to read the warning labels to ensure that you know how to use it properly.

Before transporting, make sure that the cap is on tight to make sure it doesn’t leak while traveling.

Always move a helium tank with a strapped dolly.  Most rental companies will provide you with one.

With a helium tank, the average balloon should be able to float for five to eight hours.

Most tanks won’t be refillable and can be recycled.  Balloon Time shows you how to recycle its tank.

How can I save money?

Know in advance how many balloons you will need to fill.  It may make sense to rent a machine rather than purchase one.  Most even recommend just outright purchasing the balloons as long as you’re purchasing less than 30.

Purchasing the latex balloons separately may be the best option.  For example, many Dollar Tree stores sell latex balloons for $1.  If you were to purchase a 14.9 cubic foot tank for $55, you would still need to purchase the balloons separately.  For that $55, you would be able to purchase 55 balloons and not have to worry about inflating them at home.

One member on WindsorPeak.com said she was able to find a local florist to help fill her balloons for $0.25 to $0.50 each.  The same thread said look out for a 40% off Michael’s coupon to save on the helium tank they sell.  Using this coupon, you can get a tank for as little as $15.
