How Much Does a Home Gym Cost?

Because many people cannot afford or find the time to join a gym, an at-home gym may be a better option.  This allows you to work out in the comfort of your own home and at any time of the day or night.

How much does a home gym cost?

Home gyms come in many different styles with many different features.  In a nutshell, your choices are endless and will all depend on the setup you really want.  Refer to our table below to see what most home gyms will have.  These are just ballpark estimates, so pick and choose what you would want in your gym and add the numbers up to get your total.  For functioning gym,  plan on spending at least $1,000 to $2,000+

The most basic type of home gym is a simple weight bench with free weights.  A weight bench alone can cost between $50 and $200.  Some of these benches are just flat padded benches, while others have multiple reclining positions to allow for different types of workouts.  Buying the weights separate from the bench will cost between $15 to $350 depending on the style and the number of different weights.  Something simple, such as the Hausmann vinyl coated dumbbells, can be purchased individually for around $5 per weight or in sets ranging anywhere from $20  to $50 per set.  More expensive dumbbell sets include the Stamine Versa-Bell II, a set of adjustable dumbbells sold for about $160, or the Hex dumbbell rack which can be purchased for about $360.

The next level of home gym is a weight bench, which uses fixed weights and cables to build muscles using a variety of different workout options, can be found for $250 to $1000 on average.  For example, the Best Fitness BFMG20 can be found for about $400, while the Powerline BSG10x will cost about $850.

Another type of home gym uses tension wires instead of fixed weights and cables.  These gyms include the Bowflex PR1000 and PR 3000 which sell for $500 and $800.  These tend to be all-in-one systems and won’t require anything else.

A new type of home gym that is becoming more and more popular is an over-the-door system.  These systems are great because they take up very little space in your home while still allowing for a very versatile workout.  These systems can cost $30 to $200 and include something as simple as a pull-up bar or as complex as the Body by Jake Tower 200 which is sold for about $150.

According to this top answer on this Reddit thread, he had paid $1,000 for his treadmill, and his bench, rack, weights and preacher bar cost about $1,100.

EquipmentPrice Range (new)

Squat Rack$500
Stationary Bike$500
Treadmill$1,000~
Weight Tree$50

What are the extra costs?

If purchased online, be prepared to pay shipping fees for weights that weigh more than 50 pounds.  With heavier sets, shipping fees can easily get into the $100+ range.

Flooring is ideal for those who want to put it on a concrete floor or a harder floor.  This special home gym based flooring is going to protect the floor underneath it from scratching.  Flooring can start at $25 and go up from there.  Experts recommend either installing plywood or rubber mats.

Different brands of gyms can come with additional DVDs and instructional guides that can help with workouts.  Some brands may come with an initial copy, but additional copies can be extra.

Training shoes are highly recommended when working out.  A good pair can cost upwards of $80 to $125.

A dip belt, which can help overload your dips, can cost about $30.

Those who work out in a garage often decide to caulk or insulate their garage door.  This type of project could cost $100 to $250.

Tips to know:

Stick with the basic workout material.   There’s no reason to have 30 different things when you’re only going to use a few things

Before you purchase the equipment, make sure that you know what kind of training that you want.  You’re going to want to know what kind of equipment is right for you.

Commit to working out.  It’s wise to purchase some sort of time clock that can help manage your workouts for you.  Create a schedule throughout the week and make sure that you stick to it.  Try to work out at least every other day.

Some of the benefits?  You no longer have to wait for equipment, don’t have to pay for a gym membership and you have the freedom to do what you want.

The downfalls?  It may require more discipline as you don’t have anybody to motivate you.  Plus, there won’t be a spotter unless you have someone over to help.  Lastly, most homes will require more space.

Speaking of space, most people will convert their garage or basement into a gym.  Generally, you will need about 125 square feet at a minimum to create a functional gym.

At a minimum, experts recommend you have at least an Olympic weight set, squat rack, weight bench, dumbbells and a heavy-duty floor mat.

Cardio machines can get expensive, and if you don’t have the room, consider either a rowing machine or something as simple as skipping rope.

Top brands to consider:

Body Solid

Bowflex

Powertec

Total Gym

Weider

How can I save money?

Used home gyms can be found for much cheaper through websites such as Amazon, eBay, or Craig’s List.

Purchasing in person can save you in shipping fees.  Since some weights can cost more than few hundred dollars to ship, local stores won’t charge this shipping fee.

How Much Does Doggie Daycare Cost?

Some people who work long hours each day choose to use a dog daycare to allow their dog to receive some fresh air and play time instead of being home by themselves or in a kennel.  Doggie daycares are popular in cities where apartment life is prominent.  Dog daycares can also be used for pets of people who are taking a vacation and have no one to care for their pet.

How much does a doggie daycare cost?

Most dog daycares offer half day care, which usually lasts four to five hours, or a full daycare option, which usually lasts eight to 10 hours.  Part-time daycare will cost between $10 to $25 per day, about $50 to $125 per week or $200 to $525 per month.  Full-time daycare can cost between $15 to $40 per day, which is about $75 to $200 per week or $300 to $800 per month.  Most daycares, however, give discounts for full-time dogs.  For example, All Under One Woof offers full-time daycare for $25 a day, but only charges $100 for five full days if reservations are made in advance.

Many facilities, such as Pet Smart Petshotel, offer overnight care for pets of people who are out of town.  This service can cost between $25-$50 per night depending on the location and time of year.

This Weddingbee.com poll showed that 25% of the voters paid $21 to $30 for a full day, while 20% paid $11 to $20.

Doggie daycare overview

Dog daycare should include interaction with the staff as well as other dogs.  The dogs should also be given the option of playing outside, inside or relaxing on a pillow while sleeping or watching TV.

All facilities will have feeding time for the dogs.  Some provide the food while others ask that you bring your own.

A pet hotel should include a private room where your dog can sleep alone.  If you have two dogs staying, a double room can be reserved.

Dog daycares should allow for separate play times for small and large dogs to avoid accidents.

What are the extra costs?

Many dog daycares and pet hotels charge some type of application fee or processing fee.  This one-time fee can be anywhere from $5 to $30.

If you are late picking up your pet, most facilities charge extra for each additional 15 minutes.  This charge could be as little as $1 if during normal hours or as much as $10 if employees have to stay after hours.

Some dog daycares offer pick-up and drop-off services for about $10 each way.

Most pet hotels have higher prices during high-travel times such as Christmas or Thanksgiving.

Most daycare facilities charge a cancellation fee or simply make you pay for the full day if your dog does not come as scheduled without a 24-hour cancellation notice.

Each dog must be up to date on all shots and vaccinations at all times.  All dogs over 7 months will need to be spayed or neutered.

Tips to know:

Always visit a daycare before taking your dog there.  This is your chance to get to know the staff as well as get a feel for what the whole atmosphere is like.  Is it clean?  Is it quiet?  Watch how the staff interacts.

Ask the staff about their credentials.  How do they punish the dogs if they are bad?  Are they canine CPR certified?

Be sure to note the climate of the daycare.  Is it comfortable for you?  Keep in mind that dog coats are going to vary depending on the breed.  It’s okay if it’s a tad colder than your liking.

Ask the staff how your dog is going to be introduced to other dogs, if it’s going to happen.  Make sure that the staff is going to watch over dogs when they are introduced to each other.

It doesn’t hurt to do a review check online to see what other people are saying about the daycare.  Trust your gut with the reviews.

How can I save money?

Most daycare facilities offer prices that become cheaper per day as you sign up for more days.  Reserving your dog’s spot in advance can save you money per session.

A lot of daycares give discounts on a second dog as well as discounts for referring other dogs.

Smaller privately owned daycares, usually run out of someone’s home, can sometimes be a lot cheaper.  However, they may not be as safe.

If you don’t feel like dropping your dog off, consider using services such as Care.com to find a local individual that will come to your home while you’re gone.  Most dog watchers here can charge as little as $8 per hour.

Oven overveiw

There are two popular oven options:  a range, which will have a combination of the cooktop and oven, making it an all-in-one appliance, and the wall oven, an oven built directly into the wall. Ranges are then broken down into these categories:  freestanding, slide-in, drop-in and cooktops.

As for the standalone ranges, there are four heating types:  dual fuel, electric, gas and induction.  A dual fuel range will combine both electric and gas.  An induction range will focus the heat on the cookware for faster boiling and cooking.

Control knobs, which are used to control the oven, will either be made from metal or plastic.  These knobs can either be heavy or light.  Higher-end ovens often don’t have control panels and rely on smart controls.

Wall ovens come in standard widths of 24, 27 and 30 inches; however, some brands may vary by an inch or so.

The oven capacity will vary from 3 cubic feet to as much as 5.8 cubic feet.

Most wall ovens will be electric.

All of the hoses and cords needed to install the oven properly will be included.

A user manual with instructions for use and installation will be included.

Most freestanding ranges will include the oven, a stovetop and a drawer for storage

Common colors will include stainless steel, black, white and bisque.

Other premium options could include a self-cleaning option, sabbath mode, a glass top stove, a timer, glass doors, a larger capacity and/or dual ovens.

Most name brands are going to come with a limited warranty that can last up to a lifetime.  Each and every warranty will be different, so be sure to know what yours is going to cover.  For example, Wisconsin Oven offers a lifetime warranty.

What are the extra costs?

If you want your new oven professionally installed, this could cost an additional $100 to $250.  With this installation, you will have to purchase a power cord and a gas line connector separately.  Before choosing a power cord, see if it is either a three or four prong plug.

If you need to have your new oven delivered to your home, there is usually a delivery charge of about $25 to $75. Some stores may include this for free if you purchase through their store.

To have your electric oven converted to a gas line, additional fees can apply.

Adding a self-cleaning option can often be $300 more.

A convection oven, which uses an internal fan to circulate hot air in the oven, can be a feature that costs an additional $200 or so.

Adding a warming drawer to the oven can be an additional $1,000 to $2,000, depending on the brand.

Installing or replacing a range hood will be a separate purchase.  If purchasing a stand alone range, you will want to replace this as well to make sure the appliances match one another.  A range hood will cost about $50 to as much as $800.

Tips to know:

Be sure to measure the exact oven size before purchasing a new one.  Each oven is going to have its own dimensions.  You will want to make sure that this particular oven is going to fit the space in your kitchen.

Be sure to know your hook-ups.  Is it electric of gas?  While one can be converted, it’s going to cost more money if you don’t have the proper hookup.

Top brands to consider:

How can I save money?

Shopping around and watching for sales is the best way to save money.  According to HouseLogic.com, the best times to buy an appliance is in September, October and January when they are rolling out new models.

Consider talking with appliance stores to see if they offer free installation if the oven is purchased through their store.  If so, this is a great way to save upwards of $250+

How Much Does Liposuction Cost?

Liposuction is one of the most common procedures done in the United States, and even though the fat can come back, many opt for this procedure for a quick fix.

The cost of liposuction varies according to a few different factors: the size of the patient, the part of the body being worked on, post- and pre-op needs, recovery time, geographical location and the doctor performing the surgery.

How much does liposuction cost?

On average, the cost for liposuction will widely vary depending on the factors mentioned above.  On average, plan on budgeting anywhere from $2,500 to as much as $9,000 to have a complete procedure done.  This when we factor int he anesthesiologist charge, doctor’s charge and all typical fees usually charged to the bill.

Because liposuction is deemed as a cosmetic procedure, most insurance companies won’t offer any coverage.

Cosmeticsurgery.com reports that “according to cost data supplied by the ASAPS, the national average surgeon fee for liposuction is $5,232. Surgeon fees within various regions of the United States vary widely depending on whether the practice is in an urban, suburban, or rural area.”  For example, a plastic surgeon in the Los Angeles area is going to cost much more than a plastic surgeon in Cincinnati.

Liposuction.com offers a table of the average liposuction cost is based on the different parts of the body, and these averages are based on total fees, including the surgeon fee and all other costs associated with liposuction.

For example, Dr. Melton located in Chicago, Illinois, states that the first treatment for women can start in the $2,000 range, while men can start in the $3,000 range.

Types of LiposuctionPrice
Abdomen$3,000 to $6,000
Arms$2,000 to $4,500
Back$2,000 to $4,000
Breasts$3,500 to $6,000
Buttocks$2,500 to $4,500
Cheeks$2,500 to $4,000
Chin$2,500 to $4,000
Flanks$2,500 to $3,500
Neck$2,500 to $4,000
Thighs$3,500 to $5,500
Waist$3,000 to $6,000

NOTE: The fees above won’t include the additional fees such as the facility and anesthesia fees.

Factors that affect the price:

The number of procedures being done

The more areas that need to be worked on, the more it’s going to cost. Many patients opt to have more than one area did all in one setting.

Gender

Male patients are going to pay more than a female patient due to the fact that fat is a lot harder to remove.

The size

The larger the patient is, the more work a surgeon may have to do.  Because of this, the surgical procedure could take longer.

Part of the body

Each part of the body is going to affect the price tag.  Certain parts of the body that contain more are going to be easier for a surgeon to remove.  Parts, such as the chin and ankles, can be more of a challenge, resulting in a higher fee.

Surgeon

Credible surgeons that are in demand are going to play a rather big part in the surgeon’s fee.  The experience and qualifications of the said surgeon can also inflate the prices.

Geographical location

As always, the geographical location can play a larger role in the price.  The higher cost of living states, such as New York City, will cost greatly more than the Midwest.  It’s also important to note that foreign countries, such as India, can offer the surgery at a fraction of the cost.

Liposuction overview

An initial consultation with the plastic surgeon should begin the liposuction process.

All pre-op fees should be included in your total price, including anesthesia if it is needed.  (This depends on the health of the patient and the part of the body being worked on.)

The actual surgery will be the main charge.

Any post-op care, such as recovery time, should be included.

Most patients are able to go home shortly after the liposuction process is complete unless there are unforeseen complications.

What are the extra costs?

Many cosmetic surgery centers advertise lower prices but then add on the extra fees as you go through the process.  Don’t fall for advertising ploys and read between the lines.

If there are any post-op appointments necessary, there will usually be an extra charge for this.

Additional fees, such as anesthesia and surgeon fees, may be separate from the initial quote.  This will all depend on the facility’s billing practices.  Anesthesia can cost $100 per hour for a general anesthesia to as much as $450 per hour for anesthesia administered by an anesthesiologist.

Post-op visits, if not included in the initial payment, can be up to $100 per session.

Post-op medication will be a separate fee to consider.

Compression garments will be required to help the healing process.  These garments can cost $50 to $100.

If the surgery was done in a hospital setting or outside of the doctor’s office, initial hospital fees may apply.

Laser treatments, if considered, can cost more than the traditional liposuction procedure.

Tips to know:

Always make sure that your doctor is board certified.  Be sure to ask for references as well as referrals.  Remember that this doctor is working for you.

Ask to check out before and after pictures.  This will give you a good indicator on what kind of work that he/she has done in the past.

Always ask for a step-by-step price guide so that you know exactly what’s going to be charged.

It’s important to get your estimate in writing to weed out any dishonest surgeons.

It will be next to impossible to get an estimate over the phone, so plan on visiting the surgeon in person to get an accurate number.

Pros and cons of liposuction

Some bruises and scars can be left on parts where the liposuction was done.  Depending on the patient’s elasticity, however, the areas will fade.

Accidents can occur, such as injuring another body organ; it can also cause a blood clot.

Excessive bleeding is possible after the procedure.

This procedure is a safe way to remove fat from the body.

If done properly, the cellulite appearance will be improved.

Your health will improve due to a loss of body fat.

It can boost your self-esteem.

How can I save money?

Sometimes the lowest price is not the best value; there have been reports of patients paying more to get their surgery redone and fixed than they did for the initial liposuction.  Make sure your surgeon of choice is certified by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Since health insurance won’t cover liposuction, many patients will seek financial help from the local doctor’s offices.  Many offices will have financial plans that enable you to pay on a month to month basis.  Also, if you pay full up front, many offices can offer significant discounts.  Special loans may be available as well.

How Much Does It Cost to Wire Money?

When a friend or family member is in need of some financial help, one way to get them the funds quickly is to wire it to them.

How much does it cost to wire money?

The cost of wiring money depends on the amount of money being wired, how fast the money will get there, how the money will be received, how you will be paying, the financial institution you deal with, and if it’s being sent either domestically or internationally.  The cost of wiring an amount, such as $200 within the United States, will be between $8 to $65 — about 4% and 15% of the money being sent.  We did research with most major banks, and you can see our results noted below.

Online services, such as MoneyGram, will charge about $12, while Western Union charges about $8 for next day service or $12 for same day service.

Increasing the amount of money being wired will increase the fees at a somewhat constant rate.  For example, MoneyGram charges $12 for $200, $23 for $400, and $62 for $800.  These prices are for the cheapest wire transfers – the more services you add, the higher your percentage would be.

Walmart offers a service where it can send money from one Walmart to another.  With this service, it will cost $4.50 to transfer up to $50 and $9.50 to send up to $900.

BankOutgoing Domestic WireOutgoing Domestic Wire
Ally Bank$25$50
Bank of America$30$35
BB&T$25$65
BBVAUp to $25$45
Capital OneUp to $40N/A
Chase Bank$25$40
Citibank$17.50 to $25 (fee may be waived for some members)$25 to $35 (fee may be waived for some members)
Discover Bank$30$30
Nationwide Bank$25$35
PNC Bank$30$45
SunTrust$25$50
TD Bank$25$40
U.S. Bank$30$50
Wells Fargo$30$45

What you need

In order to perform a wire transfer in person, online or via the phone, you will need the following pieces of information:

The bank name and address

The account number and routing number

SWIFT Code

Once this information is processed, it can take a few minutes to process; however, it can take up to 24 hours if it’s done internationally.

What are the extra costs?

Some services charge more fees than just the wire transfer fees.  These fees can include the processing fee or service fee.  Be sure to read the fine print when signing up for a wire transfer.

Some services charge the fee to the recipient while others charge the sender.  For instance, a wire transfer of $200 with a $12 fee charged to the recipient would result in $200 being sent and $188 being received.  This still costs the sender exactly $200.  A wire transfer of $200 with a $12 fee charged to the sender would result in $212 being sent and $200 being received.  Check with the service you choose to see what their policy is.

If you send the money in a foreign currency, a higher foreign exchange rate may apply.  Each bank will have its own policy, so it’s best to know the terms.  For example, Bank of America and Wells Fargo will charge $5 to $10 if you use a different currency.

Tips to know:

Remember that wiring money is the same thing as sending cash.  Once you send that money out, you’re not going to be able to get it back.

Never wire out money to someone that you have never met or haven’t done business with.

Avoid sellers that demand a wire transfer or an employer that says it’s part of a new “job.”  Common scams that one should be aware of include lottery, sweepstakes, overpayment, relationship and mystery shopper scams.

To learn more about these scams, the FTC has set up a page that is designated to those that want to prevent them.

Wire transfer scams

Scammers often use the “prize” technique, and in order to claim your prize, you will have to wire money over, which they refer to as the “processing fee.”

Another common scam involves those who sell goods online.  A prospective buyer will often offer a check that’s much larger than the amount the seller is asking for.  Once you deposit it, they will ask for you to send the difference minus any wire transfer fees.

Remember, once you wire money, even to a scammer, it can be very hard to retrieve, especially if it’s done internationally.

How can I save money?

Wiring money through your bank can be cheaper since it negates the need for a third party to be involved.  Most banks, such as Bank of America, charge a flat fee for domestic and a slightly higher flat fee for international wires.

Be careful of paying for goods or services through wire transfers, especially when the goods and services have not yet been received.  Craigslist and eBay have both been known to have wire transfer scams.

Consider sending money through services such as Paypal.  Paypal has reasonable fees and accounts can be set up within minutes if one doesn’t have one.

At most banks, sending a wire online can often be the cheapest option.

If you plan on to send wires on a regular basis, banks may be able to cut you a repetitive wire transfer deal.  This can often knock $5 to $10 off the price.

How Much Do School Uniforms Cost?

There are some private schools that choose to have students dress in uniforms rather than having a dress code.  This is sometimes easier than trying to make sure each student is in dress code each day.  Some people have false conceptions about uniforms; however, wearing a uniform does not mean that you wear the same outfit every day.  Usually, uniforms have a few choices of bottoms, such as dress pants, skirts, shorts, capris, and a few choices of tops such as dress shirts, polos and sweater.  These tops and bottoms can be worn in any combination at most uniform schools.

Check with your local school to see if they have any ties to a particular clothing retailer.  Local shops both online and offline can help in terms of getting discounts, and bulk packages.

Many schools have their own official uniform store.  Keep in mind that some schools will require that all clothing is purchased through this store, so you may have no choice if you’re looking to save money elsewhere.

Don’t purchase something that fits snug as your child is in their growing stages.  Try to purchase clothing that isn’t too big, but rather clothing that is loose enough so that they can grow into it.

Try to purchase your uniforms early in the season.  Retailers will mark their clothes up when it’s in demand.  Avoid this by purchasing mid-summer, rather than two days before school starts.

Ask your child what they are going to wear.  If they won’t wear the sweaters, it may be silly to invest into these articles of clothing.  It’s wise to know what your child will get the most use out of.

How can I save money?

If shopping online, try to purchase most if not all of your needs in one order.  This way you will only have to pay shipping one time.  Most school uniform items can be found through Amazon for a discounted price.

Most stores offer discounts and coupons for frequent customers, and some local stores will even make a deal with your school if they suggest them as a retailer.

Find out if the school has an exchange program.  This exchange program is going to allow your child to swap with friends and fellow classmates.

How much do wedding cakes cost?

A basic cake will usually cost between $2 to $10 per slice.  According to this range, a wedding cake meant to feed 100 people would be between $500 and $700.  According to the Huffington Post, the number one rule to keep in mind is that it’s the labor driving up the costs.

If you prefer cake with a fruit or cream filling in each layer, add about $0.50 per slice.

Different type of frosting, such as fondant or marzipan, will add about $1 per slice.

More elaborate decorations will add $25 to $150 total depending on the decorations desired as well as the time of year since this affects the type of fresh flowers available.

A cake that contains fruit or cream filling, fondant icing, and specially designed decorations and will feed 125 people will cost about $1,200.

The cost of a wedding cake will vary depending on the number of tiers on the cake as well as the diameter of each tier. Different flavors may be a factor for the price but the cake dimension usually dictates the price. A 2 tier cake that measures 5 & 8” usually costs $165 to $270.

A 3 tier cake measuring 6, 10 and 16 inches will be between $900 and $1,000. This cake can be fed to 150 guests.

A 4 tier cake measuring 5, 8, 12 and 16 inches can serve up to 200 guests and is priced at about $1,300 to $1,400.

If you are expecting at least 300 guests, a 5 tier cake measuring 5, 9, 12, 14 and 18 inches will cost you around $1,450 to $1,600.

According to the Bridal Association of America, the average wedding cake cost can be between $500 to $600 on average.

What are the extra costs?

Most cake shops charge an additional fee for delivery of the cake as well as setting up and tearing down the equipment used to display the cake.  Plan on spending $100 to $175 for this.

Some bakeries charge a fee to cut the cake, but this will also provide someone to be at the wedding to help when it is time for the cake.  This can either be a per-slice charge or a one-time fee.

Added ingredients and ornaments such as sugared flowers, figurines and nuts can cost from $1 to $15.  Frostitcakery.com, for example, charges $15 per flower.

Complicated designs would often cost you at least $15 – $20 depending on the complexity of the decoration.

Upgrading the frosting can increase the slice cost by $1.

A bow topper can be an additional $50 to $150.

Factors that affect the price:

Decorations

The number of decorations on the cake can greatly affect the price.  On average, the more decorations a cake has, the more it’s going to cost.  The type of decoration can be a factor, too.  For instance, fresh silk flowers will cost more than the ribbon.

Icing

There are many types of icing that can be applied to a cake.  This can include chocolate, fondant, royal icing and more.  Fondant icing, for example, can be harder to perfect, and because of this, the price can be higher.

Shape

A complex shape outside of a round cake is generally going to cost more.

Topper

The most important part of the wedding cake is the topper.  See:  “How much do cake toppers cost?”

Tips to know:

Don’t purchase a cake based on the decoration or the price alone.  Remember, your guests are going to be eating this cake.  A cake that tastes bad will leave a bad impression.  Most decorators will be more than happy to provide you with a free sample.

Before choosing a baker, make sure that you look at their feedback online.  It also doesn’t hurt to look at their portfolio.  Who have they worked with?  How long have they been in business?

If you come across a deal, it’s important to get everything in writing.  Get every little detail.  These details can include the pricing, the final cost and when the cake will be delivered.

The cake will include the basic design and a couple of figurines resembling the couple.  This design can either be a standard design found in a book at the bakery, or it can be customized to your specifications. Bakeries often recommend checking out Pinterest to look at millions of wedding cake pictures.

How can I save money?

Sometimes, using a smaller bakery can save you a lot of money.  These small mom-and-pop type shops will usually be about 40% cheaper; however, the quality may not be as great.

It is possible to make your own wedding cake.  Pastry Wiz provides step-by-step instructions for the many different cake decorating styles.

If you insist on having the professionals make it, you may want to have them supply you with a blank cake.  That way, all you will have to do is the decorating.

Always know the headcount of the people invited. You can indicate that the celebration is RSVP and they can only bring 1 person to accompany them. Cutting down on guests will save you money from buying bigger cakes.

Wedding cupcakes can be a feasible replacement for a wedding cake.  The same can be said about doughnuts.

Check out your local culinary school.  Many soon-to-be couples found that great looking cakes could be purchased for as little as $2 per slice.

Instead of using sugar paste decorations, consider decorating your cake with real flowers or chocolate fruit.

Try to choose premium flavors for the small tiers, while sticking to the standard flavors on the larger tiers.

There’s no need to go to a specialty bakery since many traditional bakeries can create a cake as well.

Watch your frosting and cake flavor as this is a large influence on the final estimate.

How Much Does Luggage Cost?

Anytime you travel, even if it is only for one night, some type of luggage is going to be necessary.  There are many different types of bags that you can carry.  Article Alley describes these different bags: totes, “any large handheld bag that can be used to carry a variety of things”; a wheeled upright, which can have two or four wheels and can be hard shelled or soft; and duffel bags, “cylindrical shaped bags with a closure or zipper at the top running through its length.”

How much does luggage cost?

A tote bag, somewhat like a larger version of a purse or briefcase, can be found for $15-$75.  This price depends on the size and brand, but also on the material and durability.  A canvas tote bag from Land’s End will cost about $40 while a leather tote bag from London Office will cost about $60.

A wheeled upright suitcase will cost between $40 and $200.  For example, the Skyway Sigma 2 can be purchased for about $40 while the Samsonite Silhouette 11 will run about $190.

A duffel bag, which sometimes also comes with two wheels for easy transporting, will range in price from $20 to $70.  This depends mostly on size but also on brand and material like the tote bag.  The Ogio Crunch Wasabe will cost only $20 while a duffel bag from Under Armor will cost about $60.

Matching luggage sets can be purchased as well.  These sets usually include 2-4 different sized wheeled uprights as well as a small duffel or tote to match.  Luggage sets are usually three-piece or five-piece and can be found for $75-$250.  A three-piece set from Traveler’s Club will cost about $75 while a six-piece set from Eddie Bauer will cost $150.  A three piece set of wheeled uprights only from American Tourister will cost $200.

A carry-on luggage set ideal for those that want to bring it on board an airplane can cost anywhere from $80 to as much as $500 depending on the brand and quality of the material.  For example, the Travelpro Crew retails for $186 to $300.

LuggageGuru.com, the ultimate store for those looking for luggage has a large selection of luggage.  Here, tote bags retail for $40 to $300;  Carry-on luggage with no wheels retails for $17 to $350; Carry-on luggage with wheels cost $75 to $200 and hard side luggage ranges anywhere from $110 to $210.

What are the extra costs?

Most airlines now charge for checked baggage.  Each person is allowed one carry-on bag for free; however, these carry-ons have size and weight restrictions.  See specific airline for more information.

Consider purchasing a luggage tag so that you can spot the luggage from the others in the airport, etc.

Tips to know:

Most airlines are going to charge a checked in baggage fee now.  Consider bringing a carry-on bag on board.   If this can’t happen, consider sharing your luggage among family members to save on the fee.

Checking your bags have many pros as well as cons.  Be sure to weigh them both to find out which one is going to be the best for you.  For example, checking in your luggage can avoid less hassle at the airport, while carrying it on can allow you to watch where it’s at.

Be sure to research the size.  If you’re the type that travels with a lot of items, be sure to consider luggage that has enough adequate space.

Always remember that if you’re bringing your carry-on bag, the TSA will limit fluids.

Top brands to consider:

American Tourister

Claiborne

Samsonite

Travelpro

Turni

How can I save money?

Stores, such as Kohls and , often offer 30% off one item coupons.  These types of deal can really save you money when purchasing a luggage set.

Gently used luggage can be purchased on eBay and Amazon.

If you need a set for the whole family, consider purchasing a set rather than one-by-one.  Luggage purchased in bulk is going to be a lot cheaper than those purchased separately.

How Much Do Tires Cost?

One of the regular maintenance necessities, when you own a car, is replacing the tires.  If you have one tire that is flat or damaged, you may just need one tire.  However, it is suggested by most tire shops that you replace two tires, either the front two or back two, to help the car stay aligned properly.  In an all-wheel drive vehicle, replacing all four tires may be your best option.

Car Tires” (CC BY-SA 2.0) by  everycar_listed_photos

How much do tires cost?

The cost of tires depends on the size, the car, brand and the quality.  All season tires made for sedans and smaller SUVs will cost between $50 to $125 per tire.  Examples would be the Barum Bravaris 2 sold for $62 or the Michelin Destiny sold for $116.  Both of these tires can be found at Discount Tire.

All-season tires made for SUVs and vans are larger, and therefore, more expensive.  These tires will usually run $100 to $200 per tire.  On the lower end of that range, you will find tires made by Geostar for $112 per tire, and on the higher end, you will find Goodyear brand for about $199 per tire.  These tires and prices are confirmed by Belle Tire.

Higher quality and performance tires will be more expensive, usually between $100 and $350 per tire depending on the size and brand.  For example, a tire that is made for the base model of a Jaguar by Bridgestone will cost about $200 per tire.  This price was provided by the Costco Tire Center.

According to Angie’s List members, they reported paying an average of $637 to replace all four tires.

To get an exact tire cost, TireRack.com will show you how much a tire would cost for your make and model.

Tires overview

New tires can be purchased at a local car dealership, auto repair centers and major tire centers such as Discount Tire.

The average tire size will be between 16 to 18 inches, but a truck may have tires up to 20 inches.

The first thing the tire shop will do is take the old tire(s) off your car and dispose of it properly.

Once the new tires are on, most shops will do an alignment.

Some shops will also include a tire rotation if you are not replacing all four tires.

What are the extra costs?

If you are purchasing a new tire as a result of getting a flat, it is possible that there may also be damage done to the wheel.  A new wheel will cost anywhere from $10 to $150 depending on how many you purchase, what size, and what model.  Some tire shops even have free wheelsets with the purchase of new tires.

Additional services may be required such as an alignment.

Some shops may charge an environmental tire disposal fee, which can be about $10 to $15 per tire.

Tips to know:

Don’t be cheap with your tires.  Before you purchase your tires, be sure to read the safety rating.  Also, make sure to research into how well they handle, braking and resistance.

All tires come with a traction rating:  AA, A, B or C.  AA will be the best rating possible, followed by A and so forth.

Find out the warranty information in terms of the brand.  Know what kind of damage is covered as well as how many miles they will cover.  A good tire will come with a 50,000-mile warranty.

Be sure to choose the right tire for your vehicle.  You’ll want to know the type of tire your car requires.  Don’t buy more tire than what you’re going to need.

Many tire shops work on a commission basis.  Once your car is up on the rack, they may offer alignment and balancing packages.  Try to stay away from these packages if you don’t need them.  Most of the times, they are doing this to pad their pockets.  The same can be said with them offering you an oil change, too.  You should know if you need one of these or not.

Don’t assume the OEM tires are the best choice.  Factories will often install tires that will be suitable for all driving conditions and can oftentimes be the most expensive option.

How can I save money?

Most tire shops offer discounted rates when purchasing more than one tire.

Used tires are available for discounted rates at services .  While purchasing used can be a good idea, it’s wise to consider a new set of tires first.  The thing with used tires is that most won’t know the history of the tires.

Always shop around.  Even though one shop may say they have the best price, it’s wise to talk with at least three shops.  You can always get a quote via the phone or even the website of the specific tire shop.  Check independents, online retailers as well as the big name brands.  Even check wholesale clubs such as Costco.  If you live in a metro area, take advantage of this as you should be able to negotiate for better deals.

All the tires may not need replacing.  Consider replacing only one or two tires.

Consider a mail order company that specializes in shipping out tires to your doorstep.  While you will have to find a mechanic to install these tires for you, it can still save you up to 20%.  Installing a tire shouldn’t cost more than $25.

How Much Does a Treadmill Cost?

If you wish to stay in shape by running or walking, you may find it hard to find time or you may not have an available walking area, especially during the winter season.  Joining a gym can be costly and inconvenient, but purchasing a treadmill for your home can be a great way to stay in shape on your own terms.  Treadmills allow you to exercise while watching television, in a comfortable temperature, and at any time of the day.

How much does a treadmill cost?

While most treadmills are automatic, manual treadmills can still be purchased for about $100 to $200.  For example, the manual treadmill by Cory Everson will cost about $150.

Automatic treadmills, those with a moving track for your feet, will cost between $300 and $2000.  This large price range is due to all of the different brands available and the different features each brand may offer

For example, some treadmills fold up so that they do not take up so much space in your home.  The LifeSpan Fitness LS-FT is a folding treadmill that will cost about $500.  Some treadmills are only made for walking and have a top speed of 5 or 6 mph.  This can be seen in treadmills such as the Paradigm Walking Treadmill and will cost about $320.

Many treadmills have an incline option, making it seem as though you are walking or running up a small hill.  The Horizon Fitness T101 has this option as well as many other features and costs $600.  There are many treadmills which offer the fold-up option, higher speeds (up to 12 mph) for faster running, multiple pre-set fitness programs, options to form your own fitness program, ability to store past workout information, etc.  These more complex machines will cost between $1000-$2000.  For example, the Bowflex Series 7 treadmill will cost $1300.

A manual treadmill that doesn’t require any power can range anywhere from $90 to $200.  These treadmills can have many of the other features that automatic treadmills include such as mileage and calorie count.  These type of treadmills also have an incline option as well.

According to VeryWell.com, if two walkers will be using the treadmill, plan on spending $1,000; however, if two joggers will be using it, you should be prepared to spend up to $1,500.

Treadmill overview

There are three common types of treadmills:  the budget folding treadmill, folding treadmill and non-folding treadmill.  The budget folding will have a strong running belt, often designed for walkers.  These treadmills will include a speed, distance, time and calories burned display, as well as a bottle holder and shelf.  The folding treadmills will be sturdier and can be good for occasional running.  Lastly, a non-folding treadmill will have a sturdier deck, frame and a longer belt.  These tend to be the best choice for frequent runners and higher speeds, heart-rate controls and are rated for heavier people.

All treadmills will come with an owner’s manual with instructions.

Most treadmills come with some type of limited warranty.  Some also have options for extended warranties for an extra cost.  If a warranty is included, make sure that you read the fine print closely.  All warranties are going to vary.

Most treadmills have a safety feature which turns the treadmill off in the case of a fall.  Most will also have some sort of heart monitor.

Most treadmills will have a similar footprint, measuring 77 inches long by 35 inches wide.

High-tech models will include docks for your phone, built-in heart rate monitors, USB ports, mobile app connectivity, built-in exercise programs and even WiFi Internet connectivity.

Most will have top speeds of up to 10 to 12 mph.

What are the extra costs?

While there is not much cost for upkeep, it is suggested that you keep the belt oiled.  LifeSpan Fitness offers a cleaner for $15.

Considered as a premium option, treadmills today can come equipped with TVs and interactive maps.  These maps make it as if you were actually running the course you chose.

Tips to know:

Take a look at what the treadmill is going to be used for.  What kind of features do you want?  There are many types of features out there that can include simulated map runs and more.  Usually, the more you pay, the more you’re going to get in terms of features.  Check the weight restrictions and take a look at your height.  Longer people tend to need longer treadmills.

Be sure to measure the space that you have to work with.  Treadmills are larger and can take up a good amount of space.

While most treadmills will come with incline settings, be sure to look at what kind of inclines that these treadmills can offer.  Cheaper treadmills may only offer 2 types of inclines.

Check with the warranties with the treadmill.  Make sure that there’s a warranty because problems can occur the minute you bring it home.  A one year minimum in terms of parts and motor should be more than enough.  The warranty will often reflect the quality, so if the warranty is short and the company doesn’t back its product, you may want to question it.

Be sure to know how much body weight a treadmill can handle.  On average, the impact from a treadmill can withstand around two to three times your weight.  For those who are over the 250 pound mark, it’s wise to find a treadmill that can handle up to 300 pounds.

Best-selling treadmills online

How can I save money?

Most companies have sales on treadmills at the end of the year, a time when new models come out as well as when new years’ resolutions are made.  Watch the weekly sales ads for special deals.

Used or refurbished treadmills can be purchased through services such as Amazon, eBay, and Craigslist.

Don’t be cheap with your treadmill.  You have to understand that if you’re going to use it on a daily basis, you don’t want it to fail after years worth of use.  While it’s very tempting to purchase a $200 at the local sporting goods store, be careful what you pay for.
