How Much Does Pack Rat Storage Cost?

Pack Rat is a portable storage option where you can either keep the storage unit at any location or have it taken to one of Pack Rat’s storage facilities.  This flexibility allows you to do whatever is more convenient for you.

Some people choose to use Pack Rat when moving from one location to another, a benefit allowing you can pack your belongings at your own pace rather than having to do it all in one day.  Other people may use Pack Rat storage to store items while part or all of their home is being renovated.

How much does Pack Rat Storage cost?

The cost of a Pack Rat will greatly depend on how far the storage unit is going to have to travel as well as the size and number of storage units you need.  The company is going to charge a pickup and moving fee, along with storage if you choose this option.

Like a moving company, the further you have to travel, the more you are going to pay.  For example, a 25-mile move for a 3-bedroom house could cost $350, while a long-distance move could get well into the thousands.  To budget, plan on spending close to $10 to $15 per mile for a short-distance move and around $7 to $10 per mile for a long-distance move.

To get an exact quote, the official website advises you call 1-800-PACK-RAT to receive a final price.  The cost, according to their guide, will depend on the distance you’re moving, the flexibility of your dates and the container availability.

Francesca Di Meglio on HireaHelper.com contacted the company in regards to a move she made up.  When contacting the company, she was originally given a quote of $4,967 for two 16-foot containers from Fort Lee, N.J. (New York City area) to Kissimmee, Fla. (Orlando area).  This price, however, as she haggled, was dropped to $4,350.  This fee included the two containers, delivery and transport fees, two locks, 20 blankets per container and up to $25,000 in damage coverage.

Pack Rat storage overview

Each Pack Rat unit is going to be 8, 12 or 16 feet long.  A 12-foot container can hold up to two rooms while a 16-foot container can hold up to three.  All containers are made of 100 percent steel and are lockable and weatherproof.

Pack Rat will bring the storage unit to your location, usually dropping it off in either the driveway or parking lot.  Once it has been dropped off, you will have as much time as you need to fill the box; however, if you go over the allotted amount of time that you chose, monthly storage fees will be applied.  When the box is filled, the company will come to your location, load up the truck, and take it to your new destination, where it will be dropped off again to unload.

To see how the process works in detail, camelsandchocolate.com broke down her move across the United States while using one.

Pack Rat is able to move your belongings anywhere within the continental United States.

20 blankets per container come with all long distance moves.

What are the extra costs?

If you need to store your items by the month, plan on spending $150 to $190 per month to keep them in a Pack Rat storage unit.  This rate will depend on the current promotion and which rate the representative offers.

Administration fees and taxes will be added, and these costs will depend on the move.

Adding protection to your valuables can increase the price.  For example, $75,000 in insurance could cost upwards of $150 for the move.

Boxes and other moving supplies can be purchased for an additional fee.

You will have 48 hours to cancel your reservation without penalty; however, if you cancel, the cancellation fees can depend on the distance the container has to travel to your location.  In some cases, this fee can be in the $250 to $500 range.

Tips to know

Those who live in apartments or areas with tight spaces may want to contact the company ahead of time to see if permits will have to be pulled.  Some areas may not be able to accommodate these containers.

The container will have a weight limit, so be advised that if you go over it, you will have to take out some belongings.

How can I save money?

Pack Rat is just one of the many competitors that offer this sort of setup.  Do not forget to get quotes from other leading companies like PODS and UBF.

Keep your eyes peeled for special discounts or coupons.  You can often find these deals either on their official website or by searching online for a Pack Rat promo code.

Storage units alone can be an expensive way to move.  Do not forget to compare moving trucks and other options.

Being flexible, as the company states, can save you money.

If you are a partner with Lowe’s, previous customers claim you can save 10 percent on your quote.

Don’t settle for the first quote you receive over the phone as people have been able to haggle over the phone.  For instance, you may be able to haggle on the monthly storage costs and/or lower your damage insurance to save.

Refer to our table below for the estimates we had received:

Keep in mind these prices aren’t set in stone as they can raise the prices just like other service providers.  For instance, in some cities, customers are paying $10 more per month than original customers were.

For example, in Provo, Utah, the plans range anywhere from $0 for the free Internet to $120 for television and Internet services.

According to Money Magazine, the basic free Internet plan is $25 per month for 12 months or for a $300 one-time fee.

Google Fiber overview

Tips to know

The television service cannot be purchased on its own.  You will also have to pay the monthly internet fee.

Google Fiber is extremely limited to a handful of cities.  While they continue to expand, be sure to sign up for its alerts if you are interested in signing up for the services.  You can input your email address to stay current on the expansions.  You can also stay up to date by visiting Google’s official map.

Free Internet is guaranteed for up to seven years at an address.

There are no data caps on the services.

Google Fiber claims that they are working with many cities to discover what needs to happen in order to become fiber ready.  “After we complete these steps, we hope to announce the next round of cities who’ll be getting Google Fiber by the end of 2014. While we’d love to bring Fiber to every one of these cities, it might not work out for everyone. Cities who have worked with us through this process, however, will have taken a big step forward in making their community ready for construction by any provider.”

How can I save money?

If you are not an avid Internet user, the free Internet package should be more than enough.  For instance, in Kansas City, if you cannot pay the full $300 up front, Google will let you pay $25 per month for first 12 months of service instead.

If you are thinking about switching your television provider, be sure to compare a few other services in your area to see how prices compare.  While it may seem like the best deal, in some cases, a competitor could offer better prices.

Signing up for a monthly plan will waive the construct fee.

A hospital protection plan, a plan designed to cover hospitalization costs, can range from $7 to $14 per person, per month, depending on the age.

The personal cancer indemnity plan, the #1 selling product for the company, protects you in case of a heart attack, stroke or cancer.  Depending on the age of the applicant, the monthly premium can range from $5 to $8 per person, but if a rider is added, this can increase the costs to as much as $6 to $19 per month.

Lastly, personal sickness indemnity plan, which is designed to cover sicknesses, can cost $4 to $8 per month, per person, again, depending on the applicant’s age.

Another forum member on this WhattoExpect.com forum thread claimed that she paid $45 per month for her policy.

Aflac insurance overview

Aflac specializes in short-term disability and supplemental plans.  Basically, if you were to get ill or injured for a short period of time, Aflac would pay the bills for a certain period of time, which will all depend on the policy.  This will give you time to get back on your feet so that you can let your body heal completely.  Aflac can also act as a supplementary insurance, where it will pick up any bills that your primary health insurance does not pick up.

Aflac also offers cancer indemnity, accident indemnity, disability, hospital protection, and long-term care.  An indemnity policy will pay a daily, weekly or monthly cash benefit if you had to stay in the hospital.  An accident policy would reimburse you for any costs if you were to get into an accident.  A disease-specific policy will pay a premium if you have to have any treatments that are related to your disease.

On average, be prepared to make five percent of your salary per month while you are temporarily disabled.  So for instance, if you were to make $50,000 a year, you would probably make $2,500 per month.  Also, depending on the plan, it may include “per day” diems that pay you so much money if you were in the hospital, etc.  For example, one policy may pay you $500 a day for every night you spend in the hospital.

Two common plans include 7/7 day elimination and 14/14 day elimination.  This number refers to the number of days you have to be off work until the benefits kick in.  Before you reach this number of days, your workplace should provide you with sick or vacation days.

Aflac insurance can be obtained by either contacting an insurance agent or broker who represents Aflac.

If you own a business, you can open a business account with Aflac and provide your employees with insurance through them.

What are the extra costs?

Adding dental or certain health policies may increase your monthly premium.  You can also add other people to your plans such as a spouse or children.

The lower your deductible, the higher your monthly premiums will be.  Your deductible is the amount of money that you must pay before the insurance kicks in.

If you have a long list of health problems when you sign up for Aflac, you will most likely have a higher rate.

Is Aflac worth it?  This is a popular question often asked.  According to a former Aflac representative on this Reddit thread, he said will greatly depend on your lifestyle.

Tips to know

Hospital insurance, life insurance for adults, short-term disability insurance and vision insurance will be sold via the workplace only, whereas individuals can buy accident insurance, cancer insurance, critical illness insurance, dental insurance or life insurance for children.

Premiums will not increase as you age unless you change your premium in the future.

Preexisting conditions may apply for the first 12 months of the policy.  Be sure to refer to your paperwork to see what is going to be considered a preexisting condition.

If the medical amounts succeed $3,000, a medical underwriting process will be required.

Even if you quit your job, your benefits are transferable.

Aflac policies are actually funded by employees, not the employers.  Employees will choose the plan the works best for them and the policy will be deducted from their payroll checks.

Always read the fine print to know the exclusions and conditions.  In case of a claim, you will want to know how you can be covered.

How can I save money?

If your employer offers Aflac, see what if they pay any portion of your policy.  If they do, be sure to ask how much you should plan on paying after the employer’s portion kicks in.

Talk with an agent to let them show you what you may be paying.  Usually, the lower your elimination number is, the more you are going to pay.

According to a member on this Yelp.com review, the initiation fee is about $550 while the monthly fee is about $160 at the DC Ranch location.

On another Yelp.com review for the Chandler, Arizona, location, a member complained about the higher prices.  Going into detail, she said she was offered a one-time fee of $450 after a $50 coupon, but by the time she added her family and childcare, it would be $402 a month to join the gym.

This AZCentral.com article states that a one-time fee of $990 may apply, along with a $133 monthly fee.
