How much does a Meijer Optical eye exam cost?

The costs of an eye exam at your local Meijer Optical will depend on a few factors, including the type of eye exam needed, your health insurance policy and the current promotion being held as the company does hold promotions quite often.  Based on these factors, we found the costs of an eye exam at Meijer could range anywhere from $45 to $65 for a basic eye exam to as much as $99+ for a contact lens fitting exam.  This will not include the costs of any eyeglasses/contact lenses as this needs to be considered as a separate cost.  These price estimates are deemed to be just that — an estimate based on third-party information.  For exact prices, contact your local Meijer Optical center for more information.

According to one reviewer on Yelp for the Evergreen Park, Illinois location, for example, she had said she paid $45 for son’s eye exam.

In the past, while it’s sold out now, on , Meijer offered a $39 eye exam and $200 credit toward prescription eyeglasses coupon, said to be a $255 value.

Medusa Piercing Cost

The Medusa piercing, also referred to as the philtrum piercing, is located on the top of your upper lip, slightly under the nasal septum.  Usually, most choose to use a barbell as a jewelry piece, however, some also opt for what’s known as a jestrum, where a curved-like barbell is used in a way that both of the balls are visible in the upper lip area.

Medusa Piercing Cost
New Look” (CC BY-SA 2.0) by prendio2

How much does a Medusa Piercing cost?

The costs of a Medusa piercing, as with any piercing, greatly depends on the professional you hire, they type of Medusa piercing (double vs. jestrum),  your geographical region and the type of jewelry you buy.  Based on these factors, most costs, from what we researched, could range anywhere from $45 to $90 for both the procedure and a simple barbell piece.

PiercingModels.com, for example, states the average piercing will greatly depend on your piercer’s expertise, with most prices ranging anywhere from $40 to $85.

Halo Precision Piercing & Jewelry, a body piercing shop located in Phoenix, Arizona, for example, listed the prices on their website, stating a Medusa piercing would cost $25 for just the piercing.  With jewelry not included, the costs would depend on what you choose as well as what your anatomy would allow.

Types of Medusa piercings

Double – The philtrum area is pierced two times, with one puncture under another and the opening located above the upper lip.  Those who choose this option often use two identical studs.

Jestrum – Also referred to as a Jestrum piercing, this type of piercing is a single performation, which goes directly into the lip, allowing both sides of the jewelry to be visible — one inside the center of the lip and the other just above it.

Is it painful?

Since the Medusa piercing actually penetrates a part of your face, some find it quite painful as multiple layers of your skin tissue needs to perforated to complete the process, and while everyone has their own pain tolerance, most feel some sort of discomfort, but the “amount” of pain, again, depends on how well you tolerate needles in general.  After the piercing completes, the pain usually subsides almost immediately once the barbell has been inserted and locked into place.  After you leave, some discomfort may be felt for the next few days as the piercing heals itself but usually, after a few days, the pain should fade away.

Healing

On average, healing can range anywhere from as little as six to more than 10 weeks, but this healing time will greatly depend on how well you take care of the area after you leave.  As long as you follow the aftercare instructions, the healing process should be as little as six weeks, however, if you ignore these instructions and an infection was to form, then the healing time could be much greater.

Aftercare

Like all piercings, you will be asked to use a saline solution to clean the outer portion of your jewelry, about two to three days, and to clean the inner part of your piercing, you will need to rinse your mouth with an antiseptic mouthwash twice a day until your piercing has completely healed.

Always make sure you wash your hands before handling your piercing and never pick at the crust that forms around the piercing as this can cause an infection to occur.

Try to avoid smoking as much as possible, especially during your first week of healing and always try to eat and drink as carefully as possible to avoid any sort of irritation.

Medusa piercing jewelry

Generally, the most popular option is a 14-gauge stud, often made of gold, steel or titanium, all of which are materials that lessen the chances of an infection.  Other choices, however, may include a smaller stud or ring.  To see the most popular options on Amazon.com, for example, you can view the full list here.

Tips to know

If you plan on going through with the piercing, experts highly recommend you brush your teeth and gargle thoroughly with an antiseptic mouthwash before your appointment to ensure the area doesn’t infect the area during the procedure.  Treat it as if you were going to a dental cleaning.  While your piercer will clean the area with alcohol and use gloves while holding the inside of your mouth, this added layer of protection can greatly reduce your chances of any infections performing.

By chance, if your piercing became infected, then the area will start to swell, come red in color, be painful to the touch and/or you may see some pus discharging from the pierced area.  If you notice any of these signs, do not ignore them and seek medical attention immediately as these infections can increase the severity of the situation.

If you decide to remove the piercing, a scar will form, but the size of the Medusa piercing scar will depend greatly depend on your circumstances since your age, race and skin elasticity can all play a role.  Some may see a smaller-than-average scar, if nothing at all, while others, specifically for those with a larger gauged piericng, may notice a darker-like pigmentation over the months after the jewelry was removed.

How Much Does Firazyr Cost?

Firazyr, a protein used to help treat hereditary angioedema attacks, a rare, debilitation, and life-threatening genetic disease, is available via prescription only and is considered to be one of the most expensive drugs on the market today.  It works by blocking a chemical in the body known for causing inflammation, pain and swelling for patients with HAE.

How much does Firazyr cost?

The costs of Firazyr, like most prescription-based medication, will depend on the quantity and your health insurance coverage and based on these factors, one syringe can average close to $11,000 each without any health insurance coverage, according to GoodRx.com and Drugs.com.

A press release we found stated it could cost up to $300,000 annually without insurance, on average, to help address acute attacks or help prevent attacks.  This annual cost has more than tripled over the past two years.

Does insurance cover Firazyr?

According to GoodRX.com, Medicare plans do not cover this medication and the same can be said about private health insurance policies; however, this doesn’t mean your insurance company will not cover it and/or there are other ways to save or alternatives available on the market.  To know if your health insurance company will cover this medication, we advise you either talk with your health insurance company directly, see if they have a drug cost database online where you can input your insurance information to find the costs and/or talk with your local pharmacy to see if they can provide the costs.  In the end, however, plan on your health insurance company denying you any coverage for the medication.

How to save on Firazyr

The OnePath® co-pay assistance program

The official drug manufacturer of the drug, Shire Pharmaceuticals, does offer the OnePath® co-pay assistance program, allowing you to save up to 100% off of the drug as long as you meet eligibility requirements.  According to the website, you need to be at least 18 years or older and no financial requirements are necessary to participate in the program.  However, for those who have Medicaid, Medicare or a related government-assistance program, the program can be used and the same can be said about any coupons, rebates or free trials as well.  To find out more information to see if you qualify, follow the link mentioned above to apply and see if you can save.

How Much Does H.P. Acthar Gel Cost?

H.P. Acthar Gel (corticotropin), a member of the corticotropin drug class, is often prescribed to help treat infantile spasms and multiple sclerosis.  You can view the entire list of the treatments the drug can treat here.

How much does H.P. Acthar Gel cost?

According to GoodRX.com, the costs of two 80 units/ml vials, without any health insurance, will cost close to $80,000 or close to $40,000 per vial injection, making it one of the most on the most expensive drugs on the market today.  With a treatment regimen requiring at least three vials over the course of a few weeks, the total can surpass the low six figures.

In a 60-minute report, one vial, since 2014, now costs more than $40,000 a vial, a total increase of more than 100-thousand percent since the price of $40 per vial in 2001.  The price increase was partly due to its acquisition by Mallinckrodt, a pharmaceutical company that continues to make “modest” price adjustments.  CNBC also noted that Express Scripts, a company that also owns a company known as CuraScript, exclusively distributes Acthar to hospitals, keeping the price high, according to that 60-minute investigation.

A CNN investigation cited a doctor who noted the costs are now more than $23,000 a vial, up from the $1,500 a vial when the medicine was first introduced to the market.

Does insurance cover Acthar Gel?

According to GoodRx.com’s research, the results are mixed, with only 35 percent of Medicare Part D and Medicare Advantage plans covering the drug.  Medicare, in 2013 and 2014, spent more than $650 million on the drug.  The same can be said about private insurance coverage as well, meaning that only you can know the answer as there are hundreds upon hundreds of health insurance policies on the market.  If you want to know if the drug is covered, we highly recommend you either contact your local pharmacy, insurance company and/or doctor’s office for more information.

For instance, the CNN investigation cited earlier noted the family interviewed did have the treatment fully covered, only after “wrestling” with their insurance company, with the company balking a second time when treatment was needed yet again when the seizures had returned.  In the end, however, they noted insurance companies will cover the medication in almost every case for infantile spasms, with Mallinckrodt participating in the National Organization for Rare Disorders program, a program which can help offer the medication for free to uninsured patients.
