To get an estimate for materials, AllanBlock.com does offer an estimating tool for retaining walls, patio walls and fences.

Allan Block overview

The company offers the AB®, AB Fieldstone®, Europa Collection® and AB Aztech® Collection. Each collection, with its own sizes and colors, can be used to create retaining walls, patios, courtyard walls or concrete fences.  The AB Collection offers a smooth fluid finish that is designed for an outdoor living space.  The Europa Collection has a hand-laid stone effect, offering a unique texture that brings out the distinction in any project, according to the company.  The Fieldstone Collection comes as close as you can get to a natural stone look, offering a variety of different textures, colors and styles.  Lastly, the Aztech collection, new to the market in 2017, offers a smooth, molded face look, inspired by the old Incan walls to offer a simulated century old feeling.

What are the extra costs?

Factor in the cost of labor costs to install these concrete units as the estimates mentioned prior will only include the material costs.  Some form of reinforcement will be needed even though this is less when compared to vertical walls.  The average wall can cost upwards of $25 to $45 per square foot if you were to hire a professional contractor.  If you want an exact estimate for your project, consider getting multiple quotes from licensed contractors in your area for free at HomeAdvisor.com.

Additional materials will be needed, including masonry adhesive, 2×4 (used for leveling), base rock, crushed rock, and decorative rock (optional for the finish).  These materials will vary depending on the project you are thinking about.

Tips to know:

Allan Blocks are concrete units manufactured in an eco-friendly manner, using sand and natural stone with integral color added during the production process.  Allan Block is made to be load barring and can be built to heights greater than the two-feet limit of stack stone.  Allan Block launched its first SRW (Segmental Retaining Wall block) in 1986.  The “Original” blocks featured a pioneering concrete block design which allowed retaining walls to be built easily and quickly without mortar joints, pins, or footings.

Allan Block walls have been designed to sit on a compacted granular base, which is designed to help save you time and money while offering a solid base for the blocks. These light-weight units are quicker and easy to install compared to natural stone.  They lock securely together to construct small landscape walls up to the large commercial retaining walls.  Allan Block’s center is usually filled using crushed gravel so as to add extra weight to the well.  Geo-grid or other fabric is commonly used with Allan Block to greatly increase the load barring capacity.

How Much Does Abalone Cost?

Abalone, an edible mollusk, similar to a snail, is a single shell gastropod found in coastal waters across the globe.  Of all species, it’s the red abalone that is considered to be the most prized.

Like clams and scallops, the section that is consumed is its large muscular foot that forms the majority of the body.

How much does abalone cost?

The cost of abalone will greatly depend on where you purchase it and how it’s processed.  Abalone steaks can cost $90 to $155 per pound, whereas frozen abalone can cost as little as $55 per pound.

Live abalone can cost $25 to $35 for about seven to 10 ounces, while dried abalone can cost about $150 per pound.

The best selling abalone steaks on Amazon.com, for instance, retails for close to $150 for one pound of steaks.

At Giovanni’s Fish Market, an online seafood retailer, they sell 12 to 16 “California Red” abalone steaks for $125 per pound.

In a New York Times article, the black market for poached red abalone retailed for close to $100 each.

On Alibaba.com, , with prices ranging from $50 to $75 per pound for a frozen bag.  Canned versions were much less, retailing for as little as $0.50 to $15 per can.  Most merchants did ask for a 50-pound minimum order, however.

Tips to know:

Worldwide, 15 abalone species are commercially cultivated, but the most popular in the North American market includes the red abalone, available from California and Mexico, and the black abalone, which surrounds the San Miguel Island off the coast of Southern California, according to SeafoodSource.com.

The average sized wild-caught abalone is about 12 inches, with the meat weight averaging close to one pound.  Farmed abalone, on the other hand, can grow to about four inches in length.

Due to concerns about over-harvesting, most countries have limits on how many can be harvested.  Because of this, some have opened abalone farms to harvest and sell abalone legally.

Before you eat an abalone, you will need to clean it thoroughly as with any raw seafood.  First, you need to remove the meat from the shell by sliding a spatula or other flat tool between the abalone and its shell.  Most people keep the shell to display the abalone once cooked and ready to eat.  The guts, viscera and skin then needs to be removed.  The most common way to cook abalone is to pan-fry in vegetable oil or with a fresh batter spread over it.  Steaming is another popular cooking method as well.

In China, where abalones are most common, they are considered a status symbol.  The breaded and fried abalone is delicious when served either hot or cold with a wedge of lemon.  It can also be consumed raw like sushi.

Abalone is a type of shellfish, known as a gastropod mollusk.  In the animal kingdom, an abalone belongs to the phylum Mollusca.

An abalone is a univalve, which means that it possesses one shell instead of two symmetrical shells, just like an oyster and clam.  The shell is a somewhat flatted whorl, which resembles an ear, with a slightly elevated apex at the middle of the spiral.  There are small holes that support respiration along one edge of the shell.  The creature lurks within the shell, clinging onto rocks with its foot while searching for algae and other sources of food.  Abalone reproduces by releasing eggs and sperm into the open water.

The steaks are known to have a mild flavor with a hint of sweetness, and many chefs compare the flavor to that of a scallop or lobster, with a texture of veal.

Steaks can last up to four days in the refrigerator, and the longer you wait to consume, the richer the flavor may be.

Due to the plummeting red abalone population in the early 1970s, California placed heavy restrictions on harvesting, only limiting those to sport dive north of the Golden Gate Bridge only.

How Much Does a Quantiferon TB Gold Test Cost?

A Quantiferon TB Gold test, known as a QFT-G, is one of the IGRAs (Interferon Gamma Release Assays) and is approved by the FDA.

Known as a diagnostic tool for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI), this TB blood test measures how the immune system responds to the bacteria that causes TB.

How much does a Quantiferon TB Gold test cost?

The cost of a Quantiferon TB Gold blood test in a laboratory setting will cost about $90 to $160 without a health insurance plan.  The costs will depend on the lab you choose and if health insurance is involved.

Accesalabs.com, for example, charges $149 for its test.

, another lab online, will charge $148.  The laboratory does note that a special collection kit will be required and may not be available at all LabCorp locations.  This special collection will contain three gel-barrier tubes.

Quantiferon TB Gold test overview

The QuantiFERON TB Gold In-Tube test is an indirect test for the M. tuberculosis infection which is based upon the measurement of the cell-mediated immune reaction to antigens simulating the mycobacterial proteins CFP-10, ESAT-6, and TB7.7.  This combination of three mycobacterial proteins stimulates the patient’s T-cells in-vitro to release interferon-gamma, which then is measured using ELISA technology.  This test detects infections produced by the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (including M. Bovis, M. tuberculosis and M. africanum infections).  The BCG strains and many other non-tuberculosis mycobacteria do not harbor ESAT-6, TB 7.7 and CFP-10 proteins; therefore, persons either vaccinated with BCG or even infected with most environmental mycobacteria ought to test negative.

The QuantiFERON TB Gold In-Tube test is done by simply taking a small blood sample from the patient.  To do this, a nurse will sterilize the arm, insert a needle to extract a vial of blood, then bandage the arm to ensure that there is no bleeding.  The actual process of taking blood should only take about five minutes.

The test results can take seven to 10 days.

What are the extra costs?

If you were to go to your local doctor’s office and not a local lab via an online option, then you will need to factor in a doctor’s office visit fee.  This fee, which typically ranges from $50 to $100+ will greatly depend on your doctor’s office and whether or not you’re a new or existing patient.

Tips to know:

No fasting is required prior to the test.

A Quantiferon TB Gold test can be done on a limited basis via local medical laboratories and some walk-in clinics.  Even if you choose an online laboratory such as the ones mentioned earlier, you will still need to have your blood drawn at a local laboratory like Quest Diagnostics or LabCorp.

TB disease can be diagnosed by physical examination, medical history, chest x-ray, and/or other laboratory tests.  LTBI (Latent tuberculosis infection) is a non-communicable, asymptomatic condition which persists for several years in people and may progress to tuberculosis disease.  The key aim of diagnosing LTBI is to consider the medical treatment for preventing the active form of tuberculosis disease.

The QuantiFERON TB Gold In-Tube test is not the only type of test that can give you the results for which you are looking.  For example, there was a study done comparing this test with another common one, the TST (tuberculin skin test).  The results showed that in control groups, the QuantiFERON TB Gold In-Tube test detected more, but in non-control groups, TST detected more.  Also, when compared to the two tests, the QuantiFERON TB Gold In-Tube test is much more expensive than the TST.  The conclusion of the findings was that “The QFT-G assay cost more but had a higher detection rate among most target groups and required less turnaround time than the TST. However, its sensitivity was lower among immunocompromised subjects. Therefore, the QFT-G assay should be used with caution for LBTI screening/diagnosis in resource-poor, high-HIV prevalence settings such as Trinidad & Tobago.”

How can I save money?

Currently, QFT-G may be covered under your medical insurance plan.  Talk with your insurance cover provider to find out whether this is the case.  If you are looking for a new health insurance policy, consider browsing through hundreds for free at eHealthInsurance.com.

Medical rebates are available only if the person is immune-suppressed.

The five stars in the shield refer to phases of development of the student; mind or intellect, body, spiritual attainment, emotional poise, and integrity of character. The eagle is symbolic of agility and power, and ability to reach great heights as ambitions.  One side of the ring symbolizes the seal of the State of Texas authorized by the constitution of 1845.  The five-pointed star is encircled with a wreath of olive or laurel leaves symbolizing achievement and a desire for peace and live-oak leaves symbolizing the strength to fight.  They are joined at the bottom by a circled ribbon to show the necessity of joining these two traits to accomplish one’s ambition to serve.  The other side with its ancient cannon, saber, and rifle symbolizes that the men of Texas fought for their land and are determined to defend their homeland.  The saber stands for valor and confidence.  The rifle and cannon are symbols of preparedness and defense.  The crossed flags of the United States and Texas recognize the dual allegiance to nation and state.”

The eligibility criteria in order to purchase a ring will require a student not be on suspension, dismissal, academic probation, or in any violation of the honor code of Aggie Land or the principles of the university.  Also, there is a good academic standing prerequisite for an undergraduate with a minimum GPA of 2.0 and minimum credit requirement for the master’s programs.

The Aggie rings are distributed to eligible candidates during Aggie ring day, an event that is organized three times a year in April, September, and November.  During this event, students get an Aggie ring ticket as proof of their eligibility and other identification documents to collect the Aggie ring.

What are the extra costs?

Shipping will cost $20 in the 48 contiguous United States and $30 for Alaska and Hawaii.

Tips to know:

Obtaining an Aggie ring is not just ordering it from a store, but one has to meet certain minimum requirements in order to buy the ring as mentioned above.  These requirements were defined by the Official Senior Ring Committee in 1933, a committee responsible for protecting the ring’s integrity and ensures that it is delivered only to the deserving Aggies.  The committee issues nearly 9,000 Aggie rings every year after verifying the eligibility.

You can make a donation to the Aggies through the Aggie Ring organization.  These donations go toward student scholarship programs, organizations, and upholding school traditions.

How can I save money?

The Aggie Land Association facilitates scholarships and loans for ring purchases by current students.

As you can see in the table above, you don’t necessarily need to purchase a yellow gold ring.  The Polara finish, which is 75 percent sterling silver and 25 percent palladium, is about $700 cheaper for men and about $300 cheaper for women.
